Game Progress Topic

Since I have mod status and I don't see any other moderators jumping at the oppurtunity, would anyone have any objections to me taking over the Game Progress topics?

I LOVE FO!

I played some Yoshi's Island last night to try to get reinspired to finish my Yoshi's Island feature (which is actually anagonizingly close to being finished). First, I re-fought all the bosses I still need to write descriptions for. Then I was thinking it'd be nice if I could get a screen shot of the message that said the designers put their hearts and soul into the game. Unfortunately, I forgot what stage it was. I thought it was at some landmark part of the game - maybe the end of world 1, or the start of world 2, or the end of it; or the start of 3, or its end, or the start of 4; or maybe the middle somewhere. I played through a whole bunch of stages but I couldn't find it.

This game actually looks better than I remember it looking. But I think the last time I played it, I had it hooked up to the computer monitor, which doesn't look as good.

Oh, and I played through Zanac a few more times. It's extremely easy to pick up and play, so I expect it to be a game I will replay often.

Re: I LOVE FO!

I certainly have no objections, although when I play some games, I tend to like talking about them in their own topics as well....

Anyway, I played Albert Odyssey last night. The night before I had reached Mycent after battle the sea creature on board the boat. So last night I went to the Graveyard of Ages and beat the Iron Guardian (or, actually, his hand...because that's all you fight of him.) I've always won that battle with only Gryzz standing in the end, because that boss can stun your characters, but it has no effect on Gryzz. However, I managed, this time, to keep everyone except Kia alive, so that even though they couldn't fight, they still got the experience points for the battle. I then went back to Gadel (well, the story forces you to), and the King gives you two goals: Agnus and Chestoria. You have to do both, but you can choose which one to go to first, so I went to Chestoria....and then I quit.

I was hoping to play at least until the part where you get the airship, but I got tired. And, unlike what Crawl may have thought, it's not because I got bored with the game (although I do think he'd find this game boring), but my eyes just started feeling heavy, and AO's soft palette colors that are used for its graphics made my eyes feel even more tired. I think AO's graphics are gorgeous, but sometimes, I wish some more dark colors had been used...Tonight, I'll try to get to the airship, if possible...

Re: Game Progress Topic

I never said that you HAVE to be a moderator to do the Game Progress Topics, but I guess it's better if a mod does do them so that he/she can lock the topic when it gets close to 100 posts. Also, so that we don't have more than one person creating more than one game progress topic at a time.

Well, Crawl rented The Matrix last night because I had never seen it, and we watched that. It's a long movie! Therefore, I didn't get to play much of Albert Odyssey and only beat the Circus area in Chestoria last night. I now have to go to Agnus, so I haven't gotten the airship yet.

Last night I found, for my first time, a warp in Zanac. It's no surprise that I hadn't found it before - I noticed the statue that released the warp a long time ago, but I couldn't hit it because I was preoccupied with the miniboss. This time, I had weapon 7 fully powered up and killed the miniboss early, and was able to hit the statue before it scrolled off the screen (the scrolling is VERY fast in that stage). I didn't know that statue would release a warp - I thought it might have been a statue to fully power you up - and it released one of those enemy erasers, actually. But I didn't grab it immediately, and after a few seconds, it turned black. Then when I grabbed it, I was warped ahead to area 6.

There's another statue earlier during that miniboss fight - I wonder if it too would release something interesting if I could hit it?

Re: Game Progress Topic

I started playing Ninja Gaiden 2 last night, and made it up to level 3-2. This game is tough! Maybe it's because I'm so used to the original, but some of the enemies in this game are very annoying... particularly those little red guys who roll into balls. They always knock me into pits, and I got really sick of it after about an hour so I turned the game off. I might go and give it another shot before I head back to class, here...

I think Ninja Gaiden 2 is the easiest of the trilogy. It probably just seems hard because it's new to you. Once you get going, you'll find it's really not that hard of a game. Anyway...

Super Mario Sunshine - Have 80 shines. I think I haven't found a world, because I completed every episode in all the worlds I've unlocked, and still can't get in the last area.

Animal Crossing - This game has taken over my life. I am close to paying off my house debt, have Clu Clu Land and Donkey Kong, a shovel, bug net, this neat bamboo wall-paper, and new people are moving into my town already.

Re: I LOVE FO!

I beat Balan's Tower in Albert Odyssey. This is the first of four towers you have to conquer in order to get into the game's final area. Balan is not difficult to beat, but the battle sure takes a loooonnnnnng time to finish! Even Crawl said that it had been going on for at least a half hour before Balan finally went down for the count. I remember the first time I ever played this game and got up to him, I had reached the 45-minute mark and thought something was wrong with the game!

I'm beginning to think AO has a better story than what it's often given credit for. Yes, it is a bit "generic", but it has a lot of character and I think the backstory involving the Eldeans is pretty good. I also like that the story isn't peppered with irrelevant events or plot threads that go nowhere.

played a bit of devil may cry today (while waiting for the good saturday morning cartoons to come on). no progress made. i attempted to beat nightmare a few times in the underworld stage. i came close twice before i got disorientated and distracted and lost. the fixed camera angles really suck and it's made worse when the boss blocks off your view of your character. even worse that the boss can attack you without you seeing/knowing it because he's in the way. after that, i spent the day trying to fix the computer. no luck.

I've just been replaying Zanac. I did another thing for the first time the other day: I got weapon 6 fully powered up.

Naturally, I used those power up statues. (Weapon 6's ammo is so limited, I think it would be very unlikely to keep it long enough to be fully powered up otherwise) It still didn't power me up all the way - at that point, weapon 6 was just a smart bomb (it instantly killed every enemy on the screen, rather than releasing a ball which kills every enemy on the screen when it touches something) But then I quickly got another weapon 6 powerup. Then, you get one more use of the weapon, which turns every onscreen enemy into a 1-up.

I beat Space Megaforce. I only played it a few times when I first got it, and did intend to beat it but just kind of forgot about it. Then, today, I thought I'd give it a go, and didn't run into very much trouble at all. I find it funny that Axelay is notorious for being the "easy SNES shooter" - Space Megaforce is way easier, and those two games are always being compared. Compile shooters just don't appeal to me.

I think that Space Megaforce's difficulty levels have a MUCH more dramatic effect than Axelay's, however. (When you beat SM, I assume you beat it on default - there are 4 more difficulty levels, including 2 with ricochet of bullets)

I really don't feel like defending Space Megaforce vs Axelay, though. Neither are games I feel especially strongly about. I also suppose there could be some merit in the idea of even default settings being enjoyable. As I've said here many times before, I found Gun*nac on default to be uninteresting, but much more enjoyable with ricochet of bullets. Personally, just my opinion, but I think Space Megaforce is a little more "fun," despite being easy, even on its default setting than other shooters, which may or may not become better on higher settings, on their default settings (including Gun*nac, but also other, non-Compile shooters).

But now, my favorite Compile shooter is Zanac, anyways.

Re: I LOVE FO!

I beat Space Megaforce again on default and then tried hyper, the only thing that seemed different was everything was moving faster except the ship itself, even my own impenetrable fortress made from level 4+ Circle, so it kept up with the faster speed of the enemies. I made it up to level 4 before losing a life, and then turned it off. I just didn't have any desire to try it.

Hot off the heels of SM, I decided to try MUSHA again, and this time I beat it (on default). I still don't fully understand all of the mechanics of the gameplay, there were times where I was clearly hit with no consequences at all. I kept a fully powered circle-thingy and didn't die at all until the final stage. After losing all my power, though, the last stage took an hour to beat.

I started a brand new game of Yoshi's Island. There was one thing in particular I wanted to get a screenshot of. At first, I thought I could try a few stages I thought it might be in, but after trying a few dozen stages, I realized I had no idea where it was. So, then I decided to just replay the whole game, trying to get everything.

So far, I got 100% in all the stages of world 1 (including Poochie Ain't Stupid)

I was addicted to Populous 1+2 the past couple weeks. In both games I got up to the one of the last stages when the enemy colony overpowers you in like 1 minute. >_< Recently I've been having playing the fan-translated version of Alcahest. That game rules!! Its like Magic Sword but with a storyline and an overhead view. I've also been playing quite a bit of Arcana. Sylph is so cute!! I really want to make a site dedicated to this game. I'm not much of a fan of maze rpgs but Arcana is just too good to resist.

It's funny, but the only other maze RPG I've ever liked is also my favorite RPG - Might & Magic. I was going to make a website for this game, and I even started converting my hand-drawn maps to bitmaps and taking screenshots...but as of right now, I've sort of lost my motivation to work on that project. But I can always pick it up again later.

Once I'm done here, I'm going to go play some more Kartia...

Well, I'm up to the fifth palace now in Zelda 2. I was up until 4 in the morning navigating through it (making sure to gain an experience level-- I died 2 or 3 times when I was just points away from a 7000 exp. point level gain, so I killed alot of easy enemies to make sure I'd finally gain that level), and when I got to the boss with full life, full magic, and one life, I died. My jump-and-hit-in-the-head-with-your-sword technique stinks. That, and his mace is really quick. I shall try again today...

Re: Game Progress Topic

I already beat Toxa's quest in Kartia. Amazingly, I beat the final boss in one try. I fully expected to lose a few times because he seemed much harder the first time I fought him. The difference here, though, is that I already knew what strategy (and magic spell) worked on him, whereas before, I kept having to try different things until something worked.

I'm now working on Lacryma's quest. I think I'm at about Chapter 7 or so...2 battles past the "three-leaf pond" battle.

A few days ago, I flitted between some SNES shooters, I ended up playing a bit of R-Type III. That game tends to get a little overlooked by me when I'm in the mood to play an R-Type game, because it's not as great as 1, 2 or Delta. But I guess I'd still say it's a good game. Boss battles can go by quicker if you know when to use the Hyper beam (when I first played the game, I ignored that weapon in favor of the normal charge beam. That still didn't prevent me from beating the game in one day, though...) The game has a second quest for a little more challenge, but I don't think it drastically improves the game.

I've been playing Krion Conquest. It's hard, but my skills are improving. I made it past the first boss and I am up to round 2-1 (or was it 2-2?) the ice stage. It's pretty good so far. While it is an MM ripoff, the boss battles are very interesting, and give you more freedom. In boss battle #1 You're stuck in a room with an electric pit of white energy fighting a thunder knight (his shooting style was a little similar to some of the MM bosses, but...) he fires at you (that's when you get the chance to hit him) then moves around the room like a snake and shoots himself at you (as a giant beam!) and it's getting better...

I LOVE FO!

After playing some more R-Type III, I was thinking of expressing some reasons why it's not as good as R-Type, or R-Type 2, or Delta.

As I've said, it's considerably less challenging than those other games, and generally that'd be enough to rank it lower than those masterpieces, but I can be more specific, dig into the game deeper.

Okay, I've said this before, but: I've heard it said many times that R-Type is a "memory shooter", and I've always disagreed. It has always seemed to be than any part of the R-Type games that involve memorization put using knowledge of enemy patterns into forming a strategy above rote memorization.

R-Type III does have some parts that are pure memorization, though. The most blatant example is in stage 4. There's a part that's set up kind of like a maze (vaguely like stage 6 from R-Type). Huge flows of molten metal flow through the paths there, certainly too quickly to avoid if you aren't expecting them. The only way through this part is to use trial and error to find the correct path, where the lava flow won't be at a particular time.

I'm also tempted to say that, at least in its first quest, R-Type III has no real skill challenges whatsoever. The other R-Type games have really exciting parts that require a lot of skill and coordination, like the dodging during the final boss fight of R-Type. But in R-Type 3, there aren't really any parts where the number of bullets on screen could ever be overwhelming, or when the action becomes really fast (if an attack ever IS fast, it's usually so fast you couldn't possibly dodge it - like those molten flows from stage 4).

This is rectified slightly in the second quest. The stage 4 miniboss have a part where two drones slide across the ceiling and floor, and shoot out a pattern of 3 missles each. In the 2nd quest, those missles can move fast enough to be kind of hectic. The stage 4 actual boss can require some concentration and coordination as well.

But there's another reason why I think I'm not as excited by R-Type 3 as some of the other R-types. Some of the challenges of R-Type 3 are based on doing everything exactly right. That might sound like a good thing. However, while strategies can be helpful in R-Type, sometimes the most exciting moments are when you screw up and then use skill to save your ass in a bad situation.

Tension is generated when you're always on edge - if you're safe in a game, there's no tension, and if you know you're gonna be blown away by something you can't avoid, there's no tension, either. If you like Tetris, you probably think that the most exciting moments are when you screw up, accidentally block an empty space, and then have to scramble to uncover it again. If accidentally blocking an empty space would end the game instantly, it wouldn't be exciting.

Consider R-Type 3's final stage. There's a lot I could describe about the stage - how it keeps warping between two dimensions, etc. - but what's relevant are these scarab enemies. They can take a lot of damage. A big part of the strategy of the final stage is figuring out when to charge your beam, and when to use it to blast those enemies. It takes a fully charged beam to kill them, and it takes a long time to fully charge. Therefore, if you miss, or just graze those enemies, or hit the wrong enemies, and are about to be overwhelmed by others, you have no way of fixing the situation. It'll take far too long to charge another shot to kill them before they kill you (I should point out that some pods' special weapons can kill those enemies in a reasonable amount of time, with rapid fire. But even then, it takes enough rapid fire shots that those enemies still can't be quickly disposed of to make a last instant save)

Another reason you can't always make quick saves is because of the speed of your craft. This game uses speed powerups, like R-Type and R-Type 2. Without a speed up, you seem faster than in R-Type 1 and 2, but even with a lot of speed ups, it doesn't seem possible to move as fast as you could in those older games. In some ways, this could be good - the control is never too "twitchy" - but it also never seems like the R-9 in this game can keep up with your reflexes. There are times when some slow moving enemies are homing in on you, but you just aren't fast enough to outmanuver them.

Anyway, probably the best part of the game, imo, is the beginning of stage 5 - especially the second quest. This part does have some features I mentioned above - fast enemies that can close in on you before you can dodge them, a strategy that must be rigidly adhered to. The reason why this part is better...

I'm tired. I don't think I'll write any more tonight.

I beat R-Type III tonight with the classic Pod. Since I've already beaten the game's second quest, and also beat the game with the other two pods, I've done about all there is to do (well, I could try to beat the second quest with all the other pods, too, but I don't think I care about that)

I'm not sure I remember where I was going with that. But perhaps I can clarify a little - it's not that I think parts of R-Type III are bad, I just think that the great R-Type games are better.

Anyway, while I personally was disappointed a bit by R-Type III, I'd still give it 3 stars. So, if you're planning on collecting 70+ SNES games anyway, and R-Type III sounds interesting to you, it may be worth getting.

Now I have to decide whether I like Gaiares more than R-Type III.

Re: I LOVE FO!

R Type III still eludes me.

I did pick up Metal Storm, though, and have been playing it here and there. I beat it today. Then I tried expert. The difficulty is not doubled, or even tripled - all slack has been pulled out of the game and every area requires an intense strategy. Usually you have to dart through the line of fire to the next safe spot. Actually I've only gotten to the level 1 boss, and that's after almost an hour of playing.

Re: I LOVE FO!

I beat Lacryma's quest in Kartia a few nights ago. I now have the complete archives saved on my memory card so I can watch the whole story (both quests) without playing the game.

I'm probably not going to play anything for a little while, because I don't want to beat any more games before I write reviews for Shadowgate 64, Albert Odyssey, and Kartia. I don't want to get a huge backlog...

Well, actually, I might play more of ActRaiser 2, but I'm finding it hard to go back to that game...I still haven't beaten the Hard mode, but I think I might cave in and just plug in a password to go right to the final level. The only thing I really care about is seeing whether or not it really does have a secret final boss that the Normal mode didn't have. I probably should play through the Normal mode one more time before reviewing it, though. That's definitely the mode that I want to base most of the review on when I write it.

Re: Game Progress Topic

I've played a lot of stuff in the last few weeks.

First of all, there's Animal Crossing. I got the best house and shop a while ago, and after that you don't really make progress. I'm having trouble making the house look how I like.

The game's alright, it's kinda like Harvest Moon crossed with the more mundane aspects of Shenmue. Considering those are two of my favorite games, I should probably like Animal Crossing more, but it just gets kinda boring. I understand you're not supposed to play it a lot everyday, but there should still be some more fun things to do, and I think you should be able to interact with the townspeople a little more. Why can't you hold parties or play games with them aside from special occasions?

The NES games are a nice touch, though, and the game saves your high scores. Plus I got to play Wario's Woods for the first time, and it's pretty fun. Still, I would've liked Animal Crossing to be a little better as it's own game.

I rented Kingdom Hearts about a week after I got Animal Crossing. I got to the Aladdin part, but the game just wasn't good. The combat is just the Attack button pressed over and over (A common complaint with the PSX FF's. Playing Kingdom Hearts makes me wonder if I'd like them if I replayed them now.), the level designs are just blah, and it has what is literally the worst camera I have ever seen in the game. I pretty much had my thumb on the camera stick the whole time I was playing, so I guess I was wrong about just pressing Attack, because I was constantly fumbling with the camera too. The presentation was good, nice graphics and suprisingly good voice acting, and they captured the Disney feel pretty well (Even though Final Fantasy characters are present, the focus is clearly on Disney.), but overall it wasn't even worth a rental.

It'll probably won't be worth the next rental, either. As much as I dislike the game, I NEED to see the Nightmare Before Christmas level.

I also bought Castlevania: HoD and Yoshi's Island for GBA over the weekend. I thought I wouldn't be able to afford games after I bought Animal Crossing, but that's not a problem anymore.

Yeah, Castlevania: HoD is a for the most part a SOTN rehash, but hey, SOTN is tied as my favorite game of all time, so I had some fun with it. But, there's one big, totally bogus problem: The normal mode is EASY. Normally I don't mind if a game is easy as long as it's fun, but I'm talking Yoshi Story level challenge, here. Luckily, there's a Hard mode after you've beaten the game, which isn't really that hard, but it's an improvement.

As for Yoshi's Island, it's the only game I've played recently that I don't have any complaints about. It was once my favorite Mario game and I can see why. The GBA port seems pretty seamless too. It's nice to not have played it for so long, because it's almost like a new game to me. All I really remembered was the snow levels, for some reason. It should last a while, too, because I only have 100% on like two levels right now.

I've really been in the mood to replay Vagrant Story lately... and, at another board, I was about to post an explaination about the game's ending, when I realized I forgot a few pertinent details.

So, late last night I started a new game of it. I only played far enough to reach the safe spot before the first boss.

I played Mega Man 3 tonight. I beat all of the Robot Masters and I beat the Doc Robot Needle Man stage. Isn't it cool how the Doc Robot Needle Man stage has those two giant Hard hat enemies, but you can see the tops of them encased in those big glass boxes the first time you go through Needle Man's stage? It's also daylight the first time, and nighttime during the Doc Robot stage, so it seems to imply that those giant Hard Hats only come out at night! :D

Finished Phelios (Genesis - Namco) the other day... it's a overhead shooter based on ancient Greek mythology that utilizes the weapon charging feature of R-Type, the options from Gradius, and the life bar from Namco's own Burning Force. In all the time I've had it, I was never quite able to finish it, as I never devoted too much time to it - but I have now.

I just beat Batman again in less than a hour last night. It gets easier everytime you beat it on your own. All you need is some practice to master the control and your weapons with different enemies.

I been playing lately Ultima III : Exodus also.I started expirementing with different parties to find out what is the most balanced party to start the game.

The most balanced party that I had so far is:

1. Fighter - Human : This character can fight strong monsters and it can equip the most expensive weapons and armors.

2. Thief - Elf : This character is a balanced fighter that can steal treasure chests in some towns.

3. Cleric - Bobit : This character has a variety of white magic like cure and undead. It has some defensive spells as well.

4. Wizard - Fuzzy : This character is a weak fighter, but it has a variety of useful attack spells for battles.

Re: 5

Today I played Super Ghouls n' Ghosts, and beat it the first time through, then turned it off. I did this many many years ago, but it's been so long since I seriously played that I had forgotten everything. I remember the first time I beat the game, years ago, I thought the bracelet would be "hidden" somewhere in the game (even the first quest), because, well, that's basically just what the princess says (stupid @#$% could at least tell me where she hid it!). As a result, I spent countless hours combing every level to no avail. One part that is just now coming back to memory, there was a ledge just out of reach in level 4, that I thought I could get to if I sacrificed a hit and let a spitting flower knock me back and onto it - I must have spent 3 hours trying different things in that one spot!

Well anyway, it's a great game. There's only a few things I don't like. If I jump around and attack really wildly, the graphics will glitch up, and at one point one of those damn firebrands flew around the bottom of the screen, to where I couldn't hit him, and no matter what I tried he wouldn't leave, until my time ran out. The endurance needed to beat it once through is pretty high, I'd have to set aside a whole day if I ever wanted to truly beat it.

I also started playing Gradius III. For some reason this game and I just never 'clicked'. I got up to the stage 3 boss but cannot yet beat him.

Actually, I haven't gotten past the Stage 3 boss in Gradius III either.

I've been playing SotN alot lately... I think the % is at 94.5 (I still haven't gotten like half of the Relics or spells either), and I'm trying to get it to 99 before I go and pull out my can of whoopass on Richter. Getting those last few percents, though, will be of utmost tedium, though...

Re: 5

After playing SGnG, I went to another Capcom platformer that I've beaten before but had completely de-memorized - Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse. This is really an EXCELLENT game, but you don't see it until later on, starting halfway through level 3. It seems like a basic platformer at first, but then you get different suits. The first suit, the magician, isn't all that special. But then you get the fireman suit, and it's just like Super Mario Sunshine in 2D. Use your stream of water to eradicate flaming platforms or push blocks into place, among other things. The next suit is my favorite, it looks like Robin Hood, and comes equipped with a grappling hookshot that can hook onto anything, you can swing (similar to Simon in SCIV) or climb straight up. There's some great bosses in there too. Unfortunately I think one of the most frustrating parts comes too early, in the middle of stage 2 (as a mid-boss). The guy just takes forever, although I did find a more effective strategy which finally beat him, but it didn't cut down on the frustration of the bout all that much.

Anyway, I beat it.

DS, you're going about the goddess braclet all wrong. It can be in any level. You just have to be fully powered up to get it. I remember the first time I beat that game's both quests... I got the goddess braclet fairly early on, and then accidentally picked up another weapon not much later. I really felt like kicking myself then, thinking I'd never be able to get myself fully powered up again.

Actually, though, as I remember, there are just EXACTLY enough treasure chests in the final stage to get you to the goddess braclet, assuming you find them all and never get hit.

Re: I LOVE FO!

I got to the final boss of MoS, but I was only at Level 23 (two levels below the game's level cap) and I got my ass handed to me on a platter. I did bring my level up to 24 after I restarted, but I'll have to work my way back up to where the boss is.

The mazes in this game's final chapter are pretty big and confusing. So much so, that when I first played it, I drew maps of them and always referred to them on replays. Well, this time, I haven't once pulled my maps out, so I'm pretty surprised I was able to get through the mazes as quickly as I did.

FO's been talking a lot about ActRaiser and ActRaiser 2 lately, so I think I might replay ActRaiser all the way through. You know, it's been so long since I've played that game, I wonder how much of it I'll even remember? I didn't like AR2 that much from what I played of it, but I might give it another chance. Hell, I got used to Cybernator, so how much harder could AR2 really be?
