All I play anymore is cellphone Tetris 'cause I had to sell pretty much all of my console stuff (I still have a PS2 for DVD's, though).

The sucky thing about that version is that they don't let you choose to start on a harder level. I hate slow Tetris!

Re: Game Progress Topic 12! Now with less sodium, carbs, and

I made it to Balan's Fort in Albert Odyssey and the game locked up! I'm glad I saved in Gadel earlier.

Heh. I leveled up to help my party beat Valerian's Castle, but I also remembered that you could skip ahead to Gadel and buy the better equipment there, then come back to Valerian's Castle. It may even be possible to skip farther ahead, but I figured the overworld enemies would be too tough. Not too many RPGs that aren't non-linear let you do that. Little Ninja Bros. is one of the few others I can think of that does.

So, this means I don't need to record any more music until I get to Radoria's Castle. I can't believe I'm practically there. Once I beat Balan's Fort, there's just the mountain pass, and then the towns of Weran, Tomari, and Bugdoniel, and then we're there. The first "half" of this game goes by really quickly.

After that, I'll just need to get Kia's Theme and the Agnus Town music.

Re: Game Progress Topic 12! Now with less sodium, carbs, and

Don't feel like explaining each one, but here's the Jedi Academy missions I've done since last posting...

Merchant Rescue - Blenjeel
Cult Investigation - Corellia
Ice Planet Hoth
Echo Base on Hoth
Rescue Mission - Nar Kreeta
Meet Contact - Zonju V
Covert Operation - Kril'Dor
Capture Crime Lord - Coruscant
Cult Investigation - Dosuun

Now I'm at Darth Vader's old stronghold on another planet.

The levels are getting longer and more complex, but nothing as frustrating as in Outcast. Mostly fun stuff, though very easy with my force lightning maxed out.

There was one level where you ride a vehicle... incredibly poorly implemented and glitchy. Can't believe the game was even released with that level included.

I'm about halfway through the game, I'd say.

Finished these Jedi Academy levels...

Planet Vjun (Outside Vader's Castle)
Bast Castle (Darth Vader's Castle) Lower Floors
Bast Castle Interior
Cult Sighting - Chandrila

The game is much more challenging than before.

I now can weild two lightsabers. I've maxed out force lighning, force grip (usually referred to as force choke, but not in this game), and force heal. Put some points into a couple other abilities.

Re: Game Progress Topic 12! Now with less sodium, carbs, and

I beat Balan at his Fortress in Albert Odyssey. Went to Weran and Tomari and beat the Necromancer. Took the boat across the ocean to the Mountain Pass and beat Belnard. Then I made it to Bugdoniel in the desert. Saved & Quit.

I'm just about to enter Radoria's Castle. Then I can get the music from that castle. After that, the second half of the game starts, and I can get Kia's Theme and the Agnus Town music right at the start. Then I'll be done with Albert Odyssey for now. I don't really need to play it through to the end.

Something happened while fighting Belnard that I've never seen happen before: He actually managed to cast the Lightning spell multiple times without it EVER causing a Read Error! Every time I've played this game, whenever Valerian and Belnard cast the Lightning Spell, it always caused a Read Error. The game would continue as normal, except that the Lightning Spell would have no sound effect and it would sometimes take Valerian or Belnard a really long time to cast it. A couple of times, it made the battle lose the sound effects entirely, but not the music. I've never actually seen this error lock up the game. I think the problem has something to do with the sound effect connected to the spell.

Re: Game Progress Topic 12! Now with less sodium, carbs, and

Completed the following Jedi Academy levels:

Cult Investigation - Tanaab
Dismantle Device - Yalara
Force Theft Investigation - Byss
Weapon Destruction - Ord Mantell (Boba Fett was there!)

Working on Taspir III. It's the longest level of the game so far with tons of Sith to fight.

I'm approaching the end of the game now... the nonlinear mission based part of it is over with.

It's a perfect rental really. Fairly short... entertaining, but not wonderful. Glad I didn't buy it, but was happy to have something interesting to play for several days. A big improvement over Jedi Outcast and I hope to see another sequel someday.

Got the music from Radoria's Castle. Beat Radoria. Then after that I got Kia's Theme and the Agnus Town theme because they both come immediately after the "intermission".

I'm done with Albert Odyssey for now. I don't really feel like finishing it since I only played up to the second half to get all the music I was missing.

I finished Jedi Academy last night. The last level and final boss were really just more of the same. I got the lightside ending... in order to get darkside, I'd have to load an older file and play about 2 hours of the game again. Still got to the second loop of Astro Warrior, but couldn't beat it.

Sometimes, you can skip a part of the stage if you make it so far and then die. I skipped the last part of the final stage before the boss because I got hit by an enemy, but when I restarted, the game put me right at the boss. Belzebul is easy to beat even without powerups. The trick is to get him fast so that he doesn't ram you. I don't think the ramming attack can even be avoided, especially without any speed-ups.

I wasted Bongo Bongo in Ocarina of Time. Maybe it was just the Biggoron's Sword, but I spent way more time reading Impa's speech than I spent fighting Bongo Bongo. In fact, Bongo Bongo didn't take me more than one and a half minutes. I don't remember Bongo Bongo being that easy. Hell, I remember wanted to throw the controller on the ground and start jumping up and down on it when first I played this game a few years back.

I then went and got the Silver Gaunlets.

I also got the Ice Arrows. I looked up an FAQ, and Farore's Wind was indeed by Jabu-Jabu (bomb a gray rock on a small island, and instead you'll blow a giant hole in the wall while the gray rock is untouched)

I have one Heart Piece to sixteen hearts, then there's the one in the Spirit Temple.

Does anybody know where the Bombchu Bowling Alley is?

I need to be kicked. The Bombchu Bowling Alley is that large building with the staircase on the outside in the market.

I just beat the game. I think I had 17 full hearts, and one fourth. The only bosses that ever caused a fary to come out were Dark Link (that's the only time I have ever battled Dark Link without the Biggoron's Sword, and it was HARD. With the Biggoron's Sword, you just do a thrust move, and it'll cut his defenses and nail him) and Morpha (one of the many reasons I hate the Water Temple so much). Not even giant-pig Ganon killed me (although I admit he almost got me there)

Re: Jedi Academy = Not as good as Astro Warrior

It's been over a decade since I played the third loop of Astro Warrior, but from what I recall the second loop just repeats; I don't remember it getting any harder. I may be wrong, though. Let me know if the third loop is in fact different from the second.

I've always had a soft spot for Astro Warrior; it was the first console shooter I ever became obsessed with. My friend Brandon and I used to play it often (but we had to alternate with Hang On, because he liked Motorcycles). We referred to the option-type powerups as "little friends". ("Dude, you missed your little friend!")

Amyway, do you get all the speedups? I always felt like with max speed your ship was too fast to precisely control, but since the hit box is so big (basically your entire ship) it was usually too slow without full speed to get to open spaces where there were no bullets at all. I usually end up getting them all.

Hmm...I've only been getting 2 or 3 at the most. With more than that, the ship is too fast for me to control. I wonder if that's part of my problem on the second loop. Maybe I should try getting one more.

I've played some of Star Wars Battlefront, and I really couldn't recommend it to anyone as a single player game. Battles play out almost the same way in every area, and the game just seems really rushed. The movie clips from Episode II don't even look good. I'm still unable to beat the second loop of Astro Warrior. I tried 5 times, and three were complete failures, but I beat my high score on the first and fourth tries.

I don't know about this game being the easiest shooter ever. By the time I'd put this much time and effort into Raiden Trad and Insector-X, I had already beaten all of their difficulty levels.

Unfortunately, I can't say I'm too impressed with this game. I do appreciate the challenge of the second loop, but Zanac totally blows this game out of the water. It is, however, a lot better than Alex Kidd in High-Tech World or Hang On, but I'm still yet to be overwhelmed by anything on the Master System.

They shoot bullets on Loop 2, and it's almost impossible to dodge between both them and the bullets, even with speed-ups, because there just isn't anyplace to dodge to.

It's funny how I beat it. I died on the final level, and I thought that meant I'd be a goner, but after about 3 tries, I managed to get just far enough ahead so that when I died again, my ship respawned at the final boss. He had an extra set of bullets that he shoots when the middle part is open, but he wasn't really any harder than he was on the first loop. I have a harder time with Nebiros (who doesn't change on the second loop) and the second loop Zanoni.

Re: Nazi Ducks

For some reason, I found myself playing the Genesis Garfield: Caught in the Act. I wouldn't say it sucked, but with the horrible controls and lack of anything resembling level design, I would only reccommend it so some hard-core Garfield fan (i.e. somebody who likes the recent Garfields). If you just want it for collector's, knock yourself out.

I then tried to play Toe Jam and Earl. A warning to all, this game is nearly unplayable without two players. TJ and Earl are hideously slow, and the enemies actually move quite fast, plus ammunition is extremely limited. I got the the 17th floor, and got slaughtered by the super swift Boogiemen.

I never saw these before (I never got this far), but there's this one "enemy" that's actually a group of birds in those pointed German hats, carrying a bazooka that shoots tomatos. The manual says they're chickens, but in the game they look like ducks.

Re: ...

I played a bit more of Shinobi, and beat 2-A. I also made it to what I think is the end of the "stage" part of 2-B twice, but died both times.

When I gave this game a "test run" a loooong time ago, I said I couldn't figure out how to damage the first boss. I might have been having trouble with depth perspective. The way I got it was by getting under it, so I'd be assured that it'd be in range when I'd attack.

For some of the other big enemies, I've been using classic action game tricks. Example: Stage 2 has some huge enemies (which from a distance look kind of like ogres, but they have bird heads), and they are capable of blocking your attacks and viciously counterattacking. The way you can keep them from doing this is by hitting them rhythmically. Rather than hitting them really fast, you hit them, pause, hit, pause, and so on.

At least that works when you're fighting only one of them. The part of 2-B I died on has you fight three.

Anyway, as for the boss of 2-A, I had a couple of possible plans to use. You have to fight a girl and some midget with a yo-yo, and the girl seems easier to hit, despite that she has some twitchy dodging skills. So, my primary plan was to go after her first. It's harder to get the midget because his yoyo will paralyze you if it hits. But it seemed like if I jumped in, I could attack before he could.

I did sucessfully kill the girl a few times, and afterwards even got the midget down near to death a couple of times. But when I was finally successful, it was a sudden surprise, because I Tated them.

Well, I beat the first tournament in Cathena with all possible party combinations at this point (I'll have to come back to level up Tatjana after I get her.) Ganz went from Level 9 to Level 16. Not bad at all.

Heh. I never knew that if Ganz initiates a dual-attack with Maru, he sometimes says, "Let's go, Little Prince!" I love it when characters in this game have unique dialogue for certain other characters. Like, for example, when you heal Kharg, he usually says something like, "Back in action!" But if Paulette heals him, he might say, "You always come through, Paulette!"

For some reason, I thought the Kharg-Darc and Maru-Bebedora specific dialogue at the end of the game was kinda funny.

Anyway, I left Cathena for now because I don't think I'm leveled up enough to beat the other tournaments, and I moved onto Sulfas. I found the secret headquarters of the Resistance and now I have to go destroy the two Dilzweld Strongholds.

I finished Kharg's chapter in Arc the Lad 4. I used the airship to knock out the cannons at the mountain Stronghold, then I stormed the volcano and beat the Lakelta brothers bosses.

Something weird happened here! The last time I fought the Lakelta brothers, they killed Tatjana before I could do much. This time, she survived the battle. She had a dialogue scene during the battle with Kharg that I hadn't seen before. The weird things is, her profile picture changed to what it looks like after she joins your party. Then it went back to normal after that. Must've been a mistake. But then again, Spencer said that Dilzweld had three big cannons at the stronghold, when in reality, there are only two.

So, end of that chapter.

I started Darc's next chapter. I beat Droguza and found a dialogue scene between Darc and Volk that I missed before. Then I tried beating the tournament in Rueloon. Ugh, the monsters were way too strong for us. So I returned to Orcoth and leveled up everyone there instead. I beat the 15-round tourney and won Leila's mirror.

Darc's party isn't anywhere near as leveled-up as Kharg's, though Darc and Volk may be a bit over-leveled. It's so damn difficult to get Camellia's level to go up.

Saved & Quit.

Last night I didn't play much because I had to take my car into the shop again and then we watched Army of Darkness. So I just leveled up at the Orcoth Arena. I got Delma from level 17 to level 22 by winning the 15-round Mark of Carnage tourney (which also won me the Blood Earrings).

I then tried taking Bebedora through that tournament, but she only got to Round 2 before being knocked out. It's partly because she's the only main character in the game without a single healing spell. But I did get her up one level from 18 to 19.

I was playing Donkey Konga for a few days, but had to quit because it hurt my right wrist like nobody's business. I think it has something to do with how much writing I have to do in school.

But on Wario World, I got the Beanstalk and Mirror areas finished. This game sure has some great moments (the bull boss was quite interesting, as was the Mirror stage). Such a shame the game is so damn short.

Yes, it's MUCH better than Super Mario Sunshine.

Currently kicking ass with Bebedora in the Orcoth 15-Round Tournament. For the first few rounds, she was taking massive damage from the enemies, but then she went up two levels, and now she's practically the Terminator. Bebedora gets really powerful, really fast.

I just hope that over-leveling her now doesn't mean she'll wipe the floor with us later on...because she certainly did the first time I got that far. Took me four tries to beat that part. (But still not as many tries as the final boss.)

I beat the 15-Round Orcoth Tournament with each character! I found an easy way to do it with Camellia. I equipped her with the New Game + item that allows you to cast spells without using Spirit Stones. With unlimited magic, it wasn't difficult to get her through it.

Umm...why is it that Volk got all easy enemies in that tournament??

So, then I left and went to Drakyrnia. I beat the Dilzweld troops at Dragon Bone Valley (incidentally, that screenshot of Bebedora whacking the soldier is from that very battle), then after that I beat the Dragon Ordeal test with Darc alone. It was MUCH easier to do with an over-leveled Darc wearing two Diamond Coatings than it was with an under-leveled Darc and Sapphire Coatings the first time I played through. I also managed to get both of the special items from the Dragon bosses by stealing.

Returned to Drakyrnia, Saved & Quit.

Well, I've done everything I want to do with Star Wars Battlefront. It was actually a better game than I thought at first, but like I said, it's just not good for the long term if you can't use the multiplayer mode.

I played through the Prequel and Original trilogy eras. Then I went to Galaxy Conquest mode, which is better. You attack one planet at a time, and when you conquer one by beating both it's battlefields, you get a special bonus for when you attack the next planet.

The most fun aspects of the game are the number of different character types you can fight as, and the number of vehicles you can pilot.

Gamefly hasn't shipped my next game yet, but it shouldn't be much longer. I think I'll try Sonic Heroes and hope that it's better than SA2.

Re: ...

I beat Wario World.

That was one sad excuse for a final boss. Its pattern didn't even change all that much. Sure, after the first four hits, it shot out some shock waves twice, but then it went back to the laser attack.

Although the Pirate I fought just before it was painful, because after three hits he blocks all your moves. And then I found out about those barrels...

Unless I'm misuderstanding something in the credits, Treasure made this game. Yes, the Gunstar Heroes and Ikaruga Treasure. After the credits roll, you get the Nintendo logo, but on top of it it has the Treasure logo. However, there's nothing about Treasure in any of the packaging. Perhaps they designed the packaging, scrapped the game, then Treasure made it (Shining the Holy Ark memories coming back), because I remember seeing a screen of Wario standing on top of an Arabian house (think Disney's Aladdin), but there was no such level in the entire game. There was a pyramid, but there was no Arabian house in it.

Something weird... the Spritlings are very smooth in the actual game when they pop out of the box you smashed open to give you the hint. But in the ending, they were REALLY blocky.

I beat the 30-round Tournament in Orcoth with Darc and won the King Statuette! Now I can finally equip that on someone to help raise their level faster (just like Kharg's party, which started with one of those items in the New Game +).

I got Bebedora and Delma both a ways into that tournament, but they both lost to the same exact enemy party - the large group of grim reapers. However, I did get their levels to pump up quite a bit.

It's kind of funny to think that the game is beatable at our current levels. We probably aren't going to have too much trouble with anything for awhile.

I was under the impression that Treasure made Gradius V, but their logo isn't anywhere on the game's packaging. (Speaking of which, Konami's logo now-a-days is super-lame) The box does, however, say something like it's a "treasure of a game", which may be a sly reference. And (I haven't played the game yet) maybe the ending credits are more explicit.

It is kind of funny, though, when you consider how much Working Designs pumped up that Treasure made Silpheed, when in fact only two employees from that company made it.

Ummm...

Question about Arc the Lad 4...

What does it mean when your character is "on fire" during battle? And I'm not quite understanding the spell system here. Can you level up individual spells like in Secret of Mana? Or do the number of stars just represent how many stars needed to learn the spell.

Man, it's complicated...

The battle system is like a much better version of Aidyn Chronicles.

Re: ...

"What does it mean when your character is "on fire" during battle?"

I kind of explained that in a topic on the Modern Games forum. But I'll say it again. When a character is "on fire", the next time he/she attacks an enemy with a normal attack, if anyone else is within range of that enemy, they'll execute a dual-attack.

"And I'm not quite understanding the spell system here. Can you level up individual spells like in Secret of Mana? Or do the number of stars just represent how many stars needed to learn the spell."

No, you cannot level up individual spells. Spells get stronger as your level goes up, but the number of stars next to them is just the number of stars needed to learn the spell in the first place. You increase your star level by earning SP in battles.

Make sure that you go into your skills and magic menus often and learn new skills as they become available!! I played clear through Darc and Kharg's first chapters before I figured out how to learn new skills.

"The battle system is like a much better version of Aidyn Chronicles."

Thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only person on the planet who's noticed that.

It's been a while since I was at that point in the game, but generally speaking what you have to do is look for niches in the walls and shoot them with the magic ring. That'll change the levels of platforms so you can reach different areas in the temple.

The boss of that temple (which looks like a ripoff of the spiky tiger from Secret of Mana) is really easy, just make sure you're at full HP before you fight it and you shouldn't have any trouble.

I'm still futzing around with the arena battles in Arc the Lad 4. I'm currently using Kharg's party in Cathena and I'm hoping to earn Diekbeck before much longer.

I just have to wonder why Ganz and Maru have unique dual-attack dialogue. Ganz sometimes says, "Let's get'em, little prince!" and Maru sometimes says, "Ganz, you gotta say on your toes!" It doesn't seem like Ganz or Maru have unique dialogue for anyone else on Kharg's team, and the only other members of Kharg's team who do are Kharg and Paulette (understandable). Is it that big-guy/little-guy buddy syndrome?

Sonic Heroes- I finished the first couple stages with Sonic's group (Sonic, Knuckles, Tails). It's really not as bad as I thought at first. Better than the Sonic Adventure titles so far, anyway. It's a little awkward switching between different characters to get past different areas, since you can no longer speed through a stage as completely as you could with Sonic or Shadow in the other games.

I also fought Eggman in one of his ships. The strategy was to take out the engines, but running up to it and mashing buttons worked just as well.

Man, I found out something weird about Paulette's voice actor. I remember seeing this sketch comedy show years ago that had Wayne Knight (Newman) from Seinfeld in it. It was called "The Edge" and only lasted one or two seasons. Jill Talley, Paulette's VA, was one of the regulars on that show.

The one memory of that show that stands out to me above all others was this one sketch where a guy had a "crackling crotch".

But hey, free day!), and only got in half an hour of Guilty Gear X. Man, this game is kind of sluggish on the PS2, and I don't like the analog stick. I remember GGX2 being a lot more responsive when I played it with my brother. And on the GBA, it was very responsive. Here, I have to slowly roll the control pad to get the "quarter circle" thing to register.

Although Anji's still a helluva lot funner to play than Ky.

I think it has something to do with how the control pad on the PS2 is designed.

Heh. Yeah, I'm sure that's true, FO. This game got some decent reviews, but it's one of the most poorly designed I've ever played. If the rest of the game can be assumed to be the same quality as the stages I went through, I'd give it a 1 to 1.5 out of 5, just barely playable.

And in addition to that, the camera angles gave me a headache. Other 3D games bother me sometimes, but usually, like in Mario 64 and Sunshine, the viewpoint doesn't swing around wildly and get stuck in walls and things, so it's not so bad.

Yeah, that's the one allright. There was also an episode where they were making fun of a Wilson Phillips music video, but that, along with the three sketches we've already mentioned, is all I can remember of it now. I can't even remember who Jill Talley was. I wonder if she was the "mother" of the gun-toting family.

Re: ...

I kind of think I remember the Carnie Wilson sketch, too. Wasn't she rolling around on top of a car?

I'm a little confused about some things in Arc the Lad 4.

First of all...Why did everyone drop dead in the forest? Did Lloyd and the Deimos really kill each other or was it something else? That scene didn't make much sense to me.

Also, is this game set in the future after an apocalpyse or something? I know Nafia explained it in a flashback, but it wasn't a very detailed story and I can't quite remember what she said now. But why are the Orcons living in an old subway station?

Finally, when do I get Bebedora?

I actually think the funniest part of this game so far was when Samson showed up out of nowhere and insulted the shiznits outta Tatjana. The camera was first on Samson shouting insults. Then on Tatjana getting mad. Then Samson, Then Tatajana, then Samson...and then for no apparent reason, there's a shot of Maru and he makes a weird face.

Re: PARTY ALL THE TIME!!!!!!

Have you gotten past that boss yet, James? If you do, you'll be coming very close to where you get Bebedora. Once Camellia and Bebedora are in Darc's party, the hilarity begins.

I'm sorry that I kind of ruined the surprised of Bebedora for everyone. When I played this game, I had not read anything about it anywhere. I knew absolutely *nothing* about it all and I had absolutely no clue what Bebedora was. So when I was told that Bebedora was the most powerful monster in the world created by the Divine Ruler to destroy everything, I fully expected a huge dragon or demon or some other monstrous boss to come out of that casket.

As you might've guessed, my WTF?! Meter went way off the scale when...THAT...popped out. >_>

As for the forest scene, I don't understand it fully myself. I have a theory as to what really happened there, but I can't say it right now because it'd be a MAJOR spoiler. Is it possible that Lloyd killed the Deimos. (Personally, I think Lloyd was a prejudiced jerk and is mostly responsible for how Kharg, Paulette and everyone else in Yewbell felt about the Deimos, and is the reason Paulette has trouble expressing her feelings.) But then what killed Llyod? Maybe he just dropped dead of a heart attack? He was supposedly getting old.

And finally, yes, the game takes place 1000 years after Arc the Lad 3. The Apocalypse was caused by the war with the Divine Ruler and the land became split between humans and Deimos.

I tired out some PS2 games.

Maximo: Ghosts to Glory I don't like using the analog stick (I think it's place a little weirdly), but maybe I just need time for it to grow on me. I started giggling when I first saw Maximo running around in his boxers. Is it just me, or is this game a little Ghouls and Ghosts inspired?

Katamari Damacy If games using only the left analog stick annoy me, imagine how much one using BOTH annoys me. The game is actually kind of fun, but the controls take a helluva getting used to. And the game only seems half translated. The King rambles on pointlessly for about two minutes before you can start a stage (although thankfully they let you skip it with the Start button), and his syntax would confuse Yoda.

Mega Man X7 Controls kind of suck, especially in 3D mode. The voice acting is so bad it's actually hilarious. And about Axl and his voice... the manual says he's a "teenage reploid"... I didn't know robots went through puberty...

It's part of the Ghouls n Ghosts series. Well, a spin-off really, like Gargoyle's Quest.

Re: PARTY ALL THE TIME!!!!!!

I beat Castlevania on the GBA without any special items earlier (I did die twice in the final level, though).

In this version, they added a save feature and removed the parody credit names. I don't care about either of those, but since it's not an exact port of the NES game, they really don't have any excuse for not adding the pie factory back into to the GBA release of Donkey Kong (Not that leaving it out so it'd be a perfect port of the NES game is by any means a good excuse.).

As much as I like having Castlevania portable, I'm still questioning why I gave Nintendo $19.99 for an individual NES game. Yeah, I think NES re-releases are a great idea, but when fucking Capcom, a company notorious for milking franchises for every last cent, releases a collection of 10 full games for only ten bucks more, it doesn't exactly make the Classic NES Series seem reasonable.

Re: PARTY ALL THE TIME!!!!!!

I tried to get back into gaming at least a little tonight.

First, I finally tried out Gradius V. Eh... It still features some of my pet peeves with the series. First, it still has the stupid speed up system. Was I dreaming when I heard that this game would do away with that?? Anyway, while Gradius Gaiden also had the speed up system, it was more tolerable for me with that game for a few reasons. First, there were many more powerups, so you never had to move slowly. Or maybe it just seemed that way because when you died, you'd be sent to a check point, where more speed ups would be available. Secondly, that game let you rearraing your power bar, so you could get the power ups you wanted more effectively. Finally, in all cases, something just seems weird with the control of Gradius V.

Another annoyance I have with the series in general are itty bitty, nearly invisible bullets, and there are a bunch of those here.

Maybe I'll be able to get past those annoyances in time. Maybe I won't. But I don't plan to focus on that game for a while in any case.

I also went back to Shinobi (PS2) and finally beat stage 2. Man, that stage seemed tough to me. (On the other hand, the boss was quite easy, but I was okay with that as I wanted to save after getting through the stage)

In some ways, maybe the stage seemed harder than it was because it was really long. I may have made it to the end of the stage on my first try. But it was also harder in a weird way: Usually, you perform better with a game with practice. But there'd be some times I'd die really early in the stage, when I had never died so early before.

Well, the only enemies in this stage that ever killed me were those big bird ogre creatures with the wooden shoes. So, I guess my inconsistent performance with them might indicate that I'm still not entirely sure what to do with them, and luck may have played some part in my success. I wanted to keep the three bird ogres apart at the end. Which I did. But I'm not sure if it was a result of luck or strategy.

And every once in a while, those creatures would just block all my attacks. I think I finally figured out a way of dealing with that, though (if I'm only fightin gone of them). You just have to wait for them to attack, and time your counter so it beats them.

The problem with that is that you need a good camera angle for that to work. If the enemy is between your avatar and the screen, that's hard to do. In general, this game's camera seems better than average, but there are still some things that bug me about it. It's too zoomed in, and I can't get used to how the left/right control is reversed (and it doesn't seem that can be changed at the options screen)

Anyway, I was killed right away at the start of stage 3. You have to fight a bunch of dogs that can somehow block your attacks. (I guess because they have swords in their mouths) But I suppose if I can get past them, I'll have learned a little more about dealing with blocking enemies.

Re: PARTY ALL THE TIME!!!!!!

Well, I just played through the "Bebedora Goes to Town" episode of Arc the Lad 4. (Strange, because I thought it came AFTER the Cragh Island episode, not before it.)

This confirms it. That is the single damn funniest part of a videogame I've ever seen.

And it works on so many other levels, too...

I kept a save file there so that I can make an mp3 of Bebedora's theme. Even her music is hilarious and that's the only part of the game where you can hear it.

So, anyway, I just started the beginning of the Cragh Island episode with Kharg and Samson.

Re: PARTY ALL THE TIME!!!!!!

I just made it to the Snowfly Forest in Vagrant Story. That and the long timed dungeon with the locked door at the end are probably my least favorite parts of the game.

Anyway, it's been so long since I've played that I've forgotten some things that were nice to see again. I dig the cutscenes in this game. They're extremely short by PRG standards, and well animated. I also forgot how killer this game's graphics are.

I've gotten one game over thus far, from the first Dragon boss. His fire breath killed me in one attack. I had a hell of a time with the troll. It probably took me 15 minutes to beat him. I had a blunt weapon for beasts, which, although strong against his class, was weak against his strong blunt affinity.

I've had some fun in the workshops. Many people seem to hate those, but I could fool around for hours if I had a big glut of weapons (which I do on my original save).

Crawl: Stage 3A in Shinobi is where many people quit. They're like "cruise..cruise..cruise...FUCKING NINJA DOGS." ~throw controller~ They're probably the first major challenge in the game.

I sort of want to mention how to use some mechanics of Shinobi to your advantage, but for now I'll let you figure them out on your own.

Well, if nothing else, before I pick up the game again I may go over the manual another time.

It's sometimes hard to know what game mechanics are important before you play a game. Examples: In Final Fantasy Tactics, when I was told about the zodiac signs and genders (probably in the tutorial rather than the manual), I thought, "This sounds complicated. I think I'll just ignore it." And I did, and I don't think the game ever really penalized me much for it.

I'm sure a lot of people do similar things like that, with other RPGs. But if you try that in Vagrant Story, you'll hit a brick wall. You need to understand the mechanics of that game.

Huh. The only problem I have with the timed dungeon is that the music there is kind of annoying (the only music in the game I think is annoying). Both were interesting to me as a change of pace.

The Snowfly Forest, though, I actively really liked. When I first played through the game, I had to take notes there to figure it out. That was kind of cool. I also liked how the game managed to have a really good maze, despite that it has an automapping feature. You'd think that an automap would kill the chances for a good maze (there's nothing like that in, say, Super Metroid or KOTOR).

And it was pretty challenging all around. I remember the first time I finally managed to get through the maze (well, the first half of it, anyway) and got to the dragon... and it killed me right off, with one attack. That was merciless.

There is a fairly simple way of getting through the maze, though. So, after I did it the first time, I didn't need my notes anymore.

I wonder if I've forgotten that path, though. On the other hand, even if I did, I have all my replay files, and I could go back to one of them and see what path I took. For my original file, I'm sure all the "rooms" of the forest are filled in, but on some replays, I'm sure I only went through the essential ones.

Re: PARTY ALL THE TIME!!!!!!

I got Bebedora!!

And, damn, I thought Kharg's animation was funny, but Bebedora's takes the cake.

Unfortunately, immediately after I got her, I went up against an insect Queen boss and I got completely trashed. At first, I was holding my own as I fought the big worms and the smaller enemies they spit out, but once I reached the back of the room and got close to the Insect Queen, herself, she let out an attack that wiped out everyone in one hit except Darc. I had no way to revive everyone, and she got Darc in her next attack.

If it's not possible to leave the shrine and level up, I may have to work out some strategy for attacking her from a distance so I can avoid her magic...

Re: PARTY ALL THE TIME!!!!!!

You definitely must not level up as much as I do, and I don't even think I level up THAT much on my first time through most RPGs. I've never lost to Selkis (the Coleopt Queen), although I was taken a bit offguard by that magic attack the first time, too. It got Camellia, but everyone else was okay. It seemed like you got a lot more Game Overs in Panzer Dragoon Saga than I did, too.

This is sort of a spoiler and sort of not, but regarding the part I talked about above where Bebedora "goes to town" - When you get to that part, DON'T enter Kharg's house right away. The cutscene that occurs in there changes the dialogue of some of the villagers. Run around the town and talk to everyone else first so that you catch everything (trust me, you don't want to miss any of it, it's hilarious). When I just did that part again last night, I got a lot of extra dialogue that I missed the first time because I had entered Kharg's house too soon.

(The part with the old man and the river is one I know I missed before, and that was one of the funniest!)

Re: PARTY ALL THE TIME!!!!!!

Maybe I'm just not that good a strategist. I probably shouldn't have just rushed everyone in like that, and I didn't really think to attack from a distance. It's mainly because you get such a dangerously low amount of magic points in this game. I worry that if I use up all my magic points on attack spells, I won't be able to heal.

BTW, I know you said you played halfway through Paladin's Quest and stopped, but I think that someday you should pick it up again and give it a try. It definitely gets interesting towards the end.

Finished Cragh Island in Arc 4. Damn, that is the most depressing part of the whole game. Why do Darc and Kharg have to have Tic-Tacs-for-brains?

Well, snagged myself a HELL of a lot of stars and comets in Katamari Damacy... currently, my proudest accomplishment is snagging a real big and real fast bear in the Ursa Major stage.

Re: PARTY ALL THE TIME!!!!!!

I just went through a few of my memory cards looking for Vagrant Story saves. The one with the smallest map completion near the end of the game was 79%. I probably do have one with a smaller finished percentage, but I couldn't find all of my memory cards on short notice.

The snowfly forest on that save is fairly uncluttered (that must be the area where I'm missing the majority of what I'm missing). I thought about taking a screen shot of the map there... but I guess it's unnecessary. People who've beaten the game before probably know what it'd show anyway. And I was still having that terrible jittering screen problem with the tv card. I can't remember if using the PS2 with playstation games fixes that problem or not.

Re: PARTY ALL THE TIME!!!!!!

I beat Droguza for the final time in Darc's chapter...wow...I'm almost at the end of the game... I missed getting Choco again, but I don't really want her. I'm not joking. She's the most annoying RPG character ever.

Then I completed the Milmarna sequence and beat the monks at Lamda Temple. I'm ready to cross Mt. Lamda.

Man, I'm so close to the end again...

Re: PARTY ALL THE TIME!!!!!!

I made a really nice map of Snowfly forset awhile ago, and stored it in the case. I just used that to uncover most of the map spots and get through it quickly.

I just beat Rosencrantz. I wooped him pretty badly. A reflect damage, a chain and another reflect damage and he was done.

I'm trying something new this playthrough. I've just made 3 swords for two classes each. Affinities won't drop for one class if I attack the other. We'll see how this works.

Re: PARTY ALL THE TIME!!!!!!

I just remembered that I still have a chance to get Choco before the end of the game...I'd have to choose to play as Darc in the last chapter, but I was going to do that anyway since I chose Kharg last time.
