New topic! Since that one's nearing 150 anyways.

Anyway, for those of you wondering why the topic is subtitled "He Touched My Breast!", it's a line from The Wizard, that 1989 movie where that kid went to that tournament and played Super Mario Bros. 3.

So far I've made it to Area 3-1 in Bomberman 2.

If it needs to be explained, it's probably not that funny. Anyway, I've been playing some of my Madden NFL 2005 franchise. Denny Green up and retired on me as my head coach after winning 3 straight Super Bowls with the Cardinals, and it automatically promoted my offensive coordinator (Tom Rathman) to head coach. Unfortunately, his offensive playbook is vastly different from Denny's and, frankly, sucks. I went from the number one offense (by scoring and yardage) to barely being able to get a first down. I have to figure out how to change the playbook, or dim days are ahead for my team.

Ok, I kick even more ass.
I replayed MANOWAR's stage and got 58 seconds, but a 28 hit combo, thus getting AAA rank.
I also have AAA on Flaming Cock's stage, and AA on gay old Optic Sunflower. Every other stage is A except for Gravity Antonio, which is B. But his stage is filled with waaay too many spikes, so screw him...

I also have all items except 2. Wheee.

Finished FF1 yesterday! They made Chaos a little harder, I think. The first attempt, I couldn't bring him down before he used Curaja (the fancy new name for Cure 4) on himself.

The next attempt went better, but it seemed to take forever to drain all his HP. I had fighter, black belt, and eventually even Red Mage boosted with Fast and Temper, all together doing about 1700 damage per round.

So eventually, I won, and that was the end of it. The ending text seemed longer than before. Total play time was about 9.5 hours.

Anyway, I went through that Earthgift Shrine again and found a boss I was able to beat easily... Cerberus. I got a sword that's totally useless to me now, with Excalibur and Masamune already in my inventory.

In Viewtiful Joe, I just beat Hulk Davidson.

Feel the Magic S

o, Feel the Magic arrived in the mail today, and I gave it a try with an open mind.

It's actually pretty good. Very weird, but good.

There's a larger variety of mini games than I expected, having you do all sorts of things. Painting on the side of a building while avoiding falling people, car chases where you use people as slingshots, hand holding and swatting bees, blowing candles out by blowing at the screen (actually into the microphone), and digging in the sand for buried items, all come to mind. There were more than just those, and probably many new ones to come. The games actually last a while, unlike what Wario Ware sounds like (I haven't played it yet). All of them involve using the touch screen, or some other aspect unique to the DS. It's a nice way of showing the different things the system can do.

Some are challenging, some are easy... I believe there are new difficulty settings after you beat the game, too.

Heh heh. Well, I still think it's pretty good fun. Maybe I'd like Wario Ware better, though. It's also nice to get some use out of the DS other than as an extra fancy GBA, or a way to play Mario 64.

And what about those people that bought Ping Pals? What IGN calls "A chat program for a system that already has a chat program." I know I have better decision making abilities than those people do! ;)

I was fighting some kind of plant boss when I left off, more than halfway through the game, I think. Unless I'm doing it wrong, it's the toughest thing so far.

I was in the mood to watch some Dragonball Z for whatever reason, and so I decided to watch Cooler's Revenge. As far as DBZ is concerned, I thought it was pretty good. A little short at 40 minutes, but there wasn't as much time wasting as is typical with the TV episodes.

Who but CB007 would have DBZ movies and Pi: Faith in Chaos in their rental queue at the same time?

Since I live in Seattle (near Redmond) and I fit the profile, I got to go to a playtest at Microsoft, I'm not supposed to say anything about it (although it was a game that's already out, so the fact that they were doing playtesting was a little odd) but I got Dungeon Siege for the PC, haven't gotten to try it out yet. I also broke down and decided to just pay for the Metroid Prime 2 I'm not getting back, so I'm getting Resident Evil 4 soon.

BTW, whenever I see this topic, I can't help but think of that picture of the anime chick biting the other anime chick's breast.

Um, this is anime you're talking about. You'd have to be way more specific since a lot of them get pretty explicit. At the rate I'm going, I'll probably complete this game in 2011.

I'm sorry to hear that, LT. Once Amitrius and Tweeter recommended Firefox, I gave it a try, and it solved all my problems with pop-ups and other types of ads. With enough configuration, and maybe a plugin download, it can be almost as good as viewing a Gold ezboard. Hate to sound like an advertisement, but it really is a great browser.

I played a little Feel the Magic, and beat that plant boss. I was actually doing something wrong. At one stage of the fight, you have to throw burning sticks or something at the plant. I thought this was under a time limit. This caused me to rush and mess up the timing, which made me take damage. Still somewhat challenging, though.

To be honest, I didn't like Firefox when I tried using it, either. The pictures loaded horrendously slow, and when I tried opening more than one window, the second window would freeze up for a long time before finally loading my homepage. I'm also just too used to where everything's at on the IE toolbars and I was going nuts clicking the mouse pointer at the wrong things.

The latest version of IE may not catch all the pop-ups, but closing one or two is much less of a hassle.

A few more things I hated about FireFox:

- It would give you an error message if you clicked on a .wma. You could save it, but it you couldn't click it and have it load up onto your computer.

- At VGF, there's a code some people have on the forums that display this "Start" and "Stop" music thing that you click on to start playing a midi. FireFox asked you to download a plugin to make it appear, but then didn't tell you how to install the damn thing.

- You know those funny comments some places have encoded to display if you hold your cursor over a picture? FireFox didn't support those.

I've never had any trouble. It does support alt tags, I just tested that a second ago, and rather than opening new browser windows like with IE, I open many tabs within one window, which is faster. The tabs feature is great, IMO.

With the plugin, I forget what it's called, Firefox makes it easy to block some flash ads without disabling flash all together which is nice.

Firefox does load images a bit slower, and takes longer to open for the first time. But like I said, using the tabs, I only open it once per internet session.

I was thinking, maybe some of the people that had problems had the pre-release version of Firefox. They put 1.0 out pretty recently, almost right after I started using the browser. There were probably a lot more problems in older versions including, possibly, alt tags not working right.

I figured that if anybody would have problems, it'd be me, running Windows ME on this old unreliable PC.

Viewtiful Joe goes back!

I got tired of Viewtiful Joe, so I sent it back. Tweeter is probably gonna make fun of this!

I've got a short attention span when it comes to games these days, and I just didn't feel like dealing with it anymore. The last thing I did was that part after Hulk Davidson that's like a shooter. The pace is just too slow, and the slowdown and speedup powers get old after a short while. Ah well, that's why I rented it rather than buying it.

I'm not positive about what to rent next. Probably either Mercenaries for Xbox, or that new GBA Zelda game. I should be finished with Feel the Magic in another day or two, also.

Meanwhile, I've been reading The Lord of the Rings, and enjoying it a whole lot more than I did the first time. It's an interesting experience to do this right after seeing the films. So many more differences between the two than I remembered. I've not made it very far yet, though, Frodo hasn't left the Shire yet.

I played through Zelda: The Minish Cap. Marginal would be a good way to describe it; It's fun and all, but the series needs some freshening up and I doubt it'll leave any lasting impressions because of that. It plays like the GB Zeldas with some LTTP and Zelda 64 thrown in for good measure, but the shrinking gimmick is pretty lame and isn't really put to any interesting use. It's more or less another way of getting from one place to another.

I will say that the final boss battles were probably the best the series has seen in a while, though.

Crawl and I saw The House of Flying Daggers tonight and I had to work late last night, so I haven't played anything lately. But I have been thinking about Alone 2.

Another thing about that game...I certainly hope it was not intended for that game to be scary, because not only is it NOT scary in any way, shape, or form, but it's actually quite unintentionally funny. I don't think there's any way possible for any story that involves dressing up as Santa Claus to be scary. And Carnby runs like he has a stick up his butt.

The game's prerendered backgrounds aren't that bad-looking, but the character models are the worst I think I've ever seen. Some of the enemies, I can sort of make out what they're supposed to be. Others look like jumbled piles of vibrating polygons.

Re: Game Progress Topic 19: He Touched My Breast!

A few more things about Minish Cap:

I really wish you could've mapped an item to the L and R buttons (As it is, the R button activates a pretty much useless roll technique, ala the N64 Zeldas. The L Button's sole purpose is to activate kinstone trading with NPCs, so it is especially wasted.), or at least had an abilities such as the dash or the jump permanently mapped to them once aquired. I liked all of the GB Zelda games, but I found how often you had to switch in and out of menus kind of annoying. Since the inventory system in Minish Cap is pretty much the same as those games, get ready to be in and out of menus quite often.

There were actually a few decent boss battles. They could've been a lot more difficult than they were, but a few of them where actually quite creative, particularly the manta ray boss in the sky fortress. Even the ones with clear roots and weaknesses from earlier Zelda games had tricks that kept them from feeling overtly derivative. And as I stated before, the final boss battle was probably a series highlight. I liked the way all of Link's new abilities came into play throughout that sequence of battles (The only time the shrinking ability ever really clicked with me was when it was used in a boss battle).

Heh, it just hit me that between Resident Evil 4 and Minish Cap, Capcom's had some good bosses recently. Too bad Mega Man Zero 3 was such rubbish, or they'd have a streak going.

But anyway, between the boss battles, the Minish Cap is just more Zelda. Which isn't terrible by any means, but getting excited about it doesn't come easy. I think it's time for them to start taking risks with the series (beyond adding gimmicks to proven gameplay engines.) or end it altogether. Neither of which are probably going to happen, but hey, a girl can dream.

Re: Game Progress Topic 19: He Touched My Breast!

HOLY SHIT is the final boss a son a bitch. I'm probably getting close to having spent at least as much time as I did beating him the first time. I got him down to 1/5 or 1/10 of his life a few times. From now on, I'm starting the fight (the real part) by stunning him with a kick (incidentally, I didn't have to read the manual again to figure that move out; I may have remembered it from before, but only stowed it in my subconscious), getting behind him, and hitting him with magic right away. That takes off maybe 1/10 of his life, so if I ever again do as well as I did those other times, I should kill him.

One reason this boss is so hard is that it takes forever to get a good chance to seriously damage him. It takes (all pure estimation; I haven't looked at a clock for any of this) maybe 2 minutes to get past the preamble. Then the first batch of enemies only slowly comes onto the screen. By the time enough for a full combo have appeared, it might be another 2 minutes.

Here's another common scene during the boss fight: A minor enemy is right in front of you, and you're locked onto it, and you slash and slash and slash, and miss every time, and then you're pelted by 8 different attacks coming from all sides. That would be enough to kill you instantly, by the way (in fact, for most of the boss's attacks, three hits are enough to kill you.)

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK

Then, almost every goddamn time I get a full combo, he goes into his goddamn spinning attack. Plus, with all the other crap going on, I have no reasonable way of hearing his warning that he will be doing that spinning attack.

At first, I wondered if I could get him with a couple of good combos this time through, but now I'm totally giving that up and just trying to win by any means necessary (obviously, I guess, since I said I open the fight with magic). I've gotten the boss low enough on life that winning seems possible, but holy crap, having everything work out right is like a rare conjunction in the heavens.

Sometimes I think it might be better to try to massively damage the boss with the second possible combo. The first batch of minor enemies appear two by two and slowly (as I suggested), but the second batch appear all at once.

I think I may take a shower now and try to clear my mind before I have another go at the boss.

That sounds like my experiences with Fire Emblem (among other games). I've been known to throw down my controller or GBA (onto a soft surface, of course) and yell something along the lines of "I hate this game!" from time to time too. It always seems like someone else in the house is around when that happens, and I inevitably have to answer the question of why I keep playing the game if I hate it when I turn right around and pick the controller up and play again. It gets old explaining repeatedly that it's just an expression of my frustration.

That freak alligator must have swallowed me 5 times, although one problem I have with this game is that although the targeting system allows me to keep getting headshots, I have a problem of not shooting unless I have a clear shot at their heads and their not moving too fast.

I had a flight connecting through Ohio on the way to IL today. I said "fuck it" and I'm now in California until Monday.

How many magics do you have on Hiruko? You should have three. And try using the lightning magic before you start building up your combo. It makes you faster and invincible. Fire is pretty useless against him.

Shurikens are good for stunning the talismans. They tend to run away from you on Hard.

Re: Game Progress Topic 19: He Touched My Breast!

I woke up a few minutes ago, and beat Hiruko on my second try this morning. I owe much of my success, I think, to FacilityPro's suggestion of using lightning magic.

(I think the reason I was apprehensive about using it before was that I thought that the lightning could kill some enemies (I think I tried something similar on the 6-B boss). I might have been misreading the situation, though. I said before that it seemed like Hiruko's fire of hell attack destroyed the talismans, but that didn't seem to happen this time. I did notice that the talismans could self-destruct, however.)

The first try, I did that, but Hiruko cast a spell when my combo was full. I restarted.

I only had one magic. (I had restarted on Hiruko before). I used it the first time a combo became available. I hit him in the sky and took off half his health.

I didn't have magic for the next combo, but as I suggested, it was easier anyway, because all the enemies appear at the same time. That hit took off the rest of the boss's life.

I got an overall B ranking. It's improvement!

Re: Game Progress Topic 19: He Touched My Breast!

I started Super Difficulty, and beat up to and including 2-B. Got every new medal.

I also went back to 8-A and finally got the last Normal medal there. It was in a place where I suspected it could have been, but overlooked it because it was a little farther than I previously looked, and the camera is hard to adjust on the wall.

I also once made it to the 2nd 8-A medal the "hard way". It seems that you don't need to kill (or stun) an enemy to recharge your dash, but just land a hit. I've been working that into fighting airborne enemies in all situations. (Funny that I can still be learning new technical things about this game)

I'm missing the Hard 8-A and -B medals, though. This gives me a total of 39. I imagine Joe Musashi must be unlocked at 40.

Beat 3-B, got the medal. When I first made it to the boss, I had missed the medal, and thought I'd get it later. But the boss's projectile attacks were much faster than before, so after a game over I restarted the stage.

The medal wasn't that hard to find after I tried looking for it.

And the boss wasn't too hard, either, except that I did use lightning magic to make the combo easier. I killed it in one hit, but didn't get any boss points (because of magic. I knew using fire as a superbomb negated boss points, but wasn't sure about lightning.)

I guess I have to say that the difficulty levels in this game aren't as a distinct experience from each other as they were in, say, Goldeneye. As I said before, except for the final boss, I found any stage of Hard to be about as challenging, or easier, than I found it the first time through. I'll probably elaborate on this later; it seems like I might have a bit to say about the subject of difficulty levels generally.

BEAT ALUNDRA 2!!!!!

Mephisto's final form was a real pain-in-the-ass. I had to go play The Shooter game at Gamar Island about 5,000 times to earn enough points for the better defense and offense bracelets. I pretty much down to just a few tonics and herbs for healing items by the end of the battle. What a real bastard that guy is!

I started Alundra 1, which is so different in almost every way, I have no idea why Alundra 2 is considered its sequel. When I first started the game, I got stuck in the ship right away. I tried moving that box to get through the hole in the wall, but it didn't work at first. I think I agree with BJ that this game's controls are a little weird. I did finish Tarn's Manor and went back to the town.

Re: Shinobi

Beat 4-A, got the medal. The medal was pretty easy to find.

The stage seemed easy enough that when I made it to the boss, I put in the extra effort to get an S rank (the first time I S-ranked that stage, I believe). There were several times when he teleported away before I could land the blow on him, but it didn't bother me much (since I was playing for an S, I knew I was making it harder on myself). It does seem easiest to 1-hit-kill him if he stays where he begins the fight.

I haven't unlocked a gallery picture in a long time. I'm still missing four. Also, my time is now over 62 hours. That really inflated quickly. I was at about 25 when I beat normal, and I think that was only a little over a week ago.

Anyway, going back to the subject of difficulty levels:

I think a lot of people seem to not like replaying videogames. I always hear comments like, This game was fun, but it got old. Or, it hasn't aged well. Or it even seems suggested when it's not directly mentioned. Most game magazines are filled with previews and have relatively little on games that are or have been available.

Personally, I love replaying old favorites [and even often dislike starting new games, as mentioned before]. Though there are different things I expect to experience when I play a game for the first time versus when I replay an old favorite. I imagine some of the pleasures of replaying familiar games is lost on some people.

I'm probably rambling, so I'll cut to the chase: I think the main point of Shinobi's difficulty levels is to let you replay the game, while still retaining some of the freshness (and other traits) of playing a game for the first time.

Eventually, the freshness must wear off (unless there are parts of Super that one can never become complacent with), but the extra difficulties postpone it until you've played through the game at least 3 times instead of just once.

I think that the increase in difficulty with each subsequent level is just enough to compensate for your extra skill with beating the game.

I mentioned that the game doesn't seem as different an experience as Goldeneye on different levels. This is probably cut and dried. Shinobi's enemies might become stronger, and maybe even smarter, but Goldeneye's enemies become stronger and faster, and there's more things for you to do, and more areas of the stages you need to explore.

I think even R-Type Delta might be more of a different experience on its different levels, though it's been a while since I played the game so examples aren't rushing to mind.

Anyway, I skimmed through IGN's review of Shinobi a while ago. While it wasn't overwhelmingly positive, it seemed like it tried to be reasonable and thoughtful in its lack of enthusiasm. It didn't say, "This game is too hard, so it sucks." It was more like it mused, "Can any game be too hard?"

One specific complaint it had, though, was that the game didn't do enough with its setup. It suggested there should have been more opportunies for things like wall combat, or whatever.

Really, though, I think that this game does have a decent amount of variety. I've said before that all boss fights are waiting for a bunch of little enemies to appear, attacking them all, then using the combo to kill the boss. But that's not literally all there is to the boss fights. Okay, there are some prototypical bosses that it is literally true for: 5-A, 5-B, 7-A, 7-B. But there are lots of other twists:

For 1-A and -B, Hotsuma can't even use combos at this point in the game, so you can't obviously can't 1-hit-kill the bosses the usual way.

2-A has two bosses.

3-A can be killed the typical way, but before you're good at that, he has other complicating skills, like the ability to teleport and heal himself.

The 6-A boss fight takes place almost entirely on walls. It actually probably is the best example of a fight that takes good advantage of the game's system in an intellectually admirable way. And that's the sort of thing I really like in a game, even more so than the game being exciting while you're actually playing it (which Shinobi definitely qualifies for).

(Speaking of which, I mentioned earlier that it can be hard to kill enemies while you're on a wall, if you're just slightly too high or too low. But I wasn't complaining. There are tricks to making it easier. I noticed from the beginning of the game that setting your height on a wall by trying to jump to the desired position is almost impossible: You have to fall further than you want, then jump back up. The better way of doing it is to use the dash when you're at the proper level)

As for the complaint that Shinobi doesn't have enough types of enemies, well, Goldeneye had almost only one type of enemy. It's all about context. Fighting enemies that are flying between walls (and above a bottomless pit) is a different experience from fighting enemies that are just flying above flat ground.

Inthe day I was home, I finished off Halo on Heroic. I had stages 9 and 10 to do. Even being rusty after not having played in almost a year, I still didn't have much trouble.

I also beat a few stages of Otogi 2, then I accidentally went to the main menu screen without saving (which is easy to do, considering how the options are). Now I have to make those up. (And they weren't really fun stages, either.)

Tonight I beat 7A,B, and 8A of Shinobi. I fell in the last room of 8-A twice. When I did make the jump, I accidentally hit the door before my combo was full. I didn't feel like playing through again, so I just took the A rank. I had some trouble on 7-B for some reason. All the times I went through the stage, I couldn't find the Hard coin. I found it on 8-B, but I died.

Oh, and I was wrong when I said it wasn't possible to S rank 6-B on Hard with Hotsuma. It's possible if you get the no damage bonus. Same with 7-B.

Re: Shinobi

DH and I rented the Transformers movie last night.

Umm....

Okay, hands up. Which one of you writers reached into your ass and pulled this out?

There are so many things wrong with this, where do I begin...

Ultra Magnus - Why does Prime call him "Old friend" and act like he's known him for a really long time? If that's the case, why have we never seen nor heard of him before?

Autobot Matrix of Leadership - Huh?? Where the hell did THIS come from?? I can't count how many times Prime got blown up and chopped apart in the series and never once did an Autobot Matrix of Leadership fall out of him.

Optimus Prime orders Ironhide to get Energon Cubes?? I thought only Decepticons did that.

Prowl and a bunch of other Autobots go out like a lightbulb after being shot once? Did whoever write this even watch the show? Did he/she/it realize that they were writing about giant alien robots, not fragile humans?

Autobot City??? This must've been pulled out of the same rectum that the Autobot Matrix of Leadership was farted out of. I mean, c'mon, this is WAY too much stuff just suddenly existing out of completely nowhere with no explanation!!

And if Autobot City is under attack, then where the hell are Omega Supreme and the Aerialbots? Shouldn't they be on hand to defend it? Omega Supreme was a city guardian on Cybertron, you'd THINK he'd serve the same purpose here!

Prime dies in the MIDDLE of the movie?!! All this time I kept hearing that Prime dies and I always pictured it would happen at the very end. But it happens not even at the midway point and then it's quickly forgotten. This is almost as bad as how I felt when I finally got to see the Aeris death scene after hearing how "sad" it was and, in fact, finding it unintentionally hilarious.

WTF is up with the whole entire second half of the movie?? It's like the big screen version of one of Star Fox 64's dogfighting sequences, with random, inexplicable insanity on random planets with random bizarre aliens in-between.

The ending - Apparently, this is where the person responsible for Out of This World's ending got the idea.

Unicron - he's supposed to be the size of a planet, but Grimlock is able to kick his entire butt. Shouldn't his butt be, like, at least as big as Australia?? At least??

And Orson Welles sounds like he's reading his lines with donuts stuffed in his mouth.

Re: Shinobi

Because the only purpose of the movie was to wipe out all the characters based on the canceled toyline and introduce and advertise all the characters based on the new toyline. That's how we got the mess we call "Season 3", where nothing makes any sense. This is where we can have one episode that clearly defines Dirge as being dead, but then he's alive and well in the next. And while you could argue that he was drawn into the scene by mistake, it's no mistake that Bud Davis was hired to speak his lines.

Season 3 was such a mess that Beast Wars pretty much ignored it. I can point to at least two rock-solid examples: 1. They used the Primus creation theory from the comics as oppposed to the Quintesson theory of Season 3. 2. Starscream was still a "ghost", he was never brought back to life after the movie. (Although a fanboyish explanation for that could be that his ghost traveled back in time before he got his body back.)

BTW, congratulations on beating Alundra 2. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it. I personally love the game, but since almost everyone in the entire modern gaming media hated it, I always worry about recommending it to others.

Facility said

Quote: [Super] wasn't that much more difficult than Hard, except for a few boss fights which were way harder.

Might be similar to my experience so far. When I last posted, I said Super (up to 4-A) wasn't much harder, but the boss of 4-B was really hard for me.

It probably would have been much easier if I had more than one magic, but I made it to the end of the stage in such bad shape that I restored to default on the boss.

I briefly had an internal struggle of trying to decide whether to try to redo the stage and make it to the boss in better health, or just keep fighting the boss. I chose the latter.

Anyway, when I hit the boss with a full combo, it took off about 60 percent of her life. So, there was no easy 1-hit-kill. Getting one combo on her was easy, because I could use lightning magic to make myself invincible for that combo. Getting two, however, was a royal pain in the ass.

The problem is that for most of the boss fight, you'll be standing on a small platform. And the boss launches attacks like exploding fireballs that will knock you off the platform if they hit. Even worse, sometimes she swoops the platform, and then a huge pillar of fire erupts from it; you must just off the platform if that happens. If you get knocked off the platform, you can kiss any combo goodbye.

My plan eventually became to try to get the first combo without magic, to get the hard part out of the way. I spent a lot of time doing this. I eventually took a break from the game, though, and when I came back it was much easier for me. I stayed locked on to the boss when the minor enemies came until she did her next attack. So, I could dodge that easily. (It's almost impossible to dodge while you're working on a combo, as the camera won't be pointing in the correct direction to see an incoming attack). THEN I started the combo. That little trick made beating her MUCH easier. I guess I still could have been screwed up by her using her swoop attack, but it didn't really play a part. I had thought that if I got the first combo, the second would be guaranteed. And while I had a hell of time trying for that first combo before I took a break, afterwards I got it three times in just a few minutes (I screwed up a couple of times on the second combo)

I think it would probably be ideal if I made it to the final stage on Friday night (though I might be ahead of schedule for that..) so I could spend the weekend working on the final boss, as I had before.

How interesting. The ending credit music, Lazy Mind, had lyrics in the Japanese version which were removed from the American release. It's basically just the background music. Which is a good thing, because the lyrics cause the song to suck major.

Even without the lyrics, it's not as good a song with I-D-E-A. It's not a bad song, though. Though the lyriced version made me grit my teeth.

I recently started doing that, too.

I beat Hard tonight. I recorded myself beating Hiruko, although it wasn't very impressive. I used 3 lightning magics. One combo had a talisman self destruct, so it my sword was only 7/8 full. I hit him in the back, however, which took off about half his life. I got an overall A ranking, with 6-B and 8-B being the only ranks below A.

Started Super with Hotsuma right after, and played through 1-B. I'd love to beat Super with Hotsuma. (I was at 4-B when I left after winter break.)

I had some trouble reaching the 1-A coin. (I had the same problem with the 4-B super coin the first time I tried to get it. I evenutally had to use Joe to work out a strategy to get it, then I started over with Moritsune to have an easier time against the boss.)

Oh, and I finally found the 8-A Hard coin. I saw it by accident. It's hidden pretty well.

Since you seem on planning to beat Super, I imagine you'll unlock the EX stage sooner or later. If you enjoy the platforming of Shinobi, you might like it.

Let's see...any thoughts on the soundtrack? Shinobi might be my favorite game soundtrack of all time. Some favorites:

Stage 1
1-B Boss
Oboro boss fight
Stage 4
Stage 7-A
Stage 7-B
Stage 8
Hiruko fight.

I think the stage 1 music is my favorite of the tracks listed.

Re: Shinobi

Early morning Shinobi: I beat 5-A of Super. I skipped the medal, because last night I died several times trying for it. Since I did that, the rest of the stage became much easier.

I had planned on using lightning to make the boss fight go easier (not that it was difficult, but I wanted to get it over with quickly), but I forgot, so I got an A rank. (Probably not an S because I left a lot of enemies behind in the last room)

I redid the stage with Joe Musashi in the stage select, and got the medal pretty easily. I did not kill a single enemy until the boss. Sort of amusing.

As for 4-B, my experience with the medal in that stage was sort of weird. At first, I couldn't imagine how to reach it, but I figured I'd just take a leap of faith. It worked quite easily. But I died a few times in that stage. And on one of my later tries, I couldn't figure out what I did before to get the medal!

(Speaking of which, I tried getting the 2nd 8-A medal the way I originally did it, and wasn't able to do it. I don't know what I did, exactly)

I finally tried systematically jumping from several places on that middle platform until I found the one that let me reach the medal.

The most nerve wracking part of fighting the 4-B boss for me was that I couldn't quite remember if I got that medal that time or not, and if I'd have to redo the stage (it turns out I did get it.) I figured if I made it to her with Joe Musashi, I might just try pelting her with shurikens to soften her up. Though I'm not sure if that would really work well. I actually did kill the 2-A bosses exclusively with shurikens last night, but it takes forever. And while using shurikens with Hotsuma or Moritsune may not count towards the number of times you hit a boss, it must with Musashi (I got zero boss points on that occasion).

Deathblow on Hiruko. This one's sort of jumbled. Hiruko's in the middle, and that white smear is my sword coming down on him. (Right on his neck. Cool.) I had just stealth dashed toward him, so, although I'm sort of invisible, you can see my ghost image in the foreground. I believe that red smear is my scarf.

You can see his remaining health beginning to turn from red to white. I believe he had exactly as much health left as I drained from him. My first hit on him was on his back, but one of the talismans had self destructed, so my sword was 7/8 full. That shot took off 1/2 his health. The next hit was with a full combo, but in the front. That took off half his remaining health, or 25% of his total. That screenshot above is draining his last 25%.

I bought a weird game for my Atari 2600 called "The Adventures of TRON". I wondered if it would be anything like the arcade game, but it isn't. I can't even really figure it out. It's a bunch of horizontal floors with a enemy on each floor and I guess you're supposed to get to the top of the screen, but I always get hit.

Continued playing Toxa's quest in Kartia and got through the Arena battle. I was a little annoyed because they said you had 10 rounds to fight, but it ended when it GOT to Round 10 instead of AFTER Round 10, so in reality, it was only 9 Rounds. Had I known, I might've done that last round a little differently, but oh well, I survived it, and hopefully, I didn't miss anything too crucial to completing the game...

Re: Game Progress Topic 19: He Touched My Breast!

I was busy with other stuff, so I only played a little tonight. I beat 5-B of Super (but it was a boss only stage; I did bother to S rank it, though). And in the stage select I got an S rank on 7-B.

Quote: No, it doesn't. You have to touch the boss with your sword at some point to earn the boss bonus.

Thanks for the tip; that's how I S ranked 7-B. It seems kind of cheesy, but oh, well. I tried using Moritsune first, but he only took off 90% of the boss's health. Even with the no damage bonus, a 2 hit kill was only enough for an A rank. If I could have back-attacked the boss, I probably could have killed it, but it doesn't seem to be stunned by shurikens (not even bursts), and I never had enough time in my combo to get a kick in and run to the back.

So, I tried Musashi. I pelted the boss a lot, but that really didn't do much. What really took his health down were combos ending with shuriken bursts. I was careful to hit him exactly once with the sword. It was an easy S rank.

As for thoughts on the soundtrack, I don't think I could go so far to say it's one of my all-time favorites (sorry). Something like 7-B's music doesn't do a lot for me. But there are some songs I really like. Hiruko's theme is probably my favorite in the game. It helps keep repeatedly fighting him enjoyable. My second favorite might be the stage 1 theme.

I also finally altered the control configuration. I switched the camera center and lock-on target switch buttons. I found it impossible to hit R2 while holding R1 (I'd have to completely change the way I hold the controller to do that). I'm still not totally used to using the target switch. But I needed it for S ranking 2-B (I targeted the helicopter, then when it launched missiles, changed target and threw shurikens).

I hooked up my new Dreamcast, but I only played a music disc on it. Um, is it supposed to be this loud? FO and anybody else with a Dreamcast, does yours make a high pitched humming noise to, almost to the point of inducing a minor headache?

Hey, I just realized something. The Dreamcast is the one where you can burn discs of NES ROMS and play them on the Dreamcast.

Know what this means?

SWEET HOME ON THE TELLY!!!

Speaking of Sweet Home, I broke my Kazuo keychain. I hooked them up to my backpack with Kazuo and Taro on the zippers to the backpack that you pull (each set of zippers actually has two of the key things. And there's two compartments on the backpack like this), which was my main mistake. Actually, Kaz himself is all in one piece. I just snapped off the extra bead that the key ring when through. I moved Taro to a "stationary" zipper, meaning the one I wouldn't be using to open and close the backpack. Emi was on some plastic ring on the side of the backpack.

It occured to me this morning that a charged hit might be the way to go, but I don't think it could be done with Moritsune because his sword is completely empty before the first minor enemies are even summoned. Maybe it could work with Hotsuma.

Some that come to mind are SHNOOBOND007 for when Sethra's board first opened, and SQUALLBOND008 as a joke when FF8 came out.

There used to be abbreviated CB007, but I know I deleted that one.

I had many Ghaleon variations, but I can't keep them straight in my mind anymore. There was a Master Ghaleon without the 99, and possibly something like Ghaleon Revival... then again, that may be one of the ones used by whoever impersonated me.

There was also Controller Buttons for a message board game ages ago.

Who knows what else.

No. On Hard, his sword is drained, too. And Joe can't use the charge attack.

Last night I beat stages 2, 3, and 4-A. I had trouble with the 2-A and 3-B bosses. (I still didn't use magic, though.) It's hard to kill all 4 enemies because the helicopter attacks so often on Super. I was trying to use missiles to damage it as much as possible to salvage my ranking.

On Super, Hotsuma's fully charged hits only take about 20% of the 3-B boss's health. The only exception is when he's climbing up the wall, they will take off more than half. Only thing is he's never crawling up the wall when you want him to.

I kicked ass on 4-A, thoguh. Got most of the Tates, and got a 1-hit tate on the boss. I didn't even have to charge attack him. A hit to the back when he was stunned still works.

4-B is going to suck. I'll have to hit her at least 3 times with a full sword. (Unless I can get her when she's taunting.)

I was just talking about Normal, though. (If I ever wanted to get an all S rank Normal game with Hotsuma) I already S ranked the stage with Joe for the stage select, so I'm not worried about that.

I played Mappyland. Oh, it brought back so many fond memories. But I forgot how short the game was overall. It's four playthroughs, but it can all be done in an hour. I only did two of them (Cheese collecting, Ring collecting), but I did die a lot :)

I also drew a couple of Mega Mans. The first one sucks big time. The second one I drew while looking at artwork in the Mega Man 8 manual, and it came out much, MUCH better (I'm the type who can only draw if I'm looking at something. I did a rather nice Axl while looking at my action figure of him.)

Re: Game Progress Topic 19: He Touched My Breast!

I get that, but the people do look familiar to me most of the time. The thing is, I usually won't remember their names, and it's not exactly polite to ask.

"Hey, how's it going, man?"

"Oh, pretty good. How are things with you? And by the way, uh, who are you again?"

Luckily, the conversations never got all that complicated, so it wasn't an issue.

I just realized something.

This is the second-longest topic in the history of the board.

How can you tell?

I'm sure it's the longest Game Progress Topic, anyway. Not that it's about anything even close to game progress anymore, though.

That's one better than me. I usually don't even recognize their faces. Especially if it's been a few years and people have gotten older.

You've only been here like 6 months though!

(After this, the topic loses focus, so I'm cutting it off here for the purpose of archiving)
