Anyway, I have now just finally decided to try to beat Streets of Rage 2 on Hard with Max. I've tried just the first two stages on that difficulty for practice...they're easier on that level than I thought...

I might actually play the whole game on Hard tonight...and that's if I even feel like it. And if I don't, then maybe tomorrow.

I watched DBZ: Return of Cooler today, sequel to Cooler's Revenge. It wasn't that good, though, even compared to the first movie.

I got Star Ocean 3 today, too, and I may play some of it later.

What in the blue hell is all that crap in the first post in this thread about?
Anyway, I was recently playing my franchise in Madden 2005, and the @#%$ing power went out in the middle of the game. When I turned it back on, the first thing it said was something about my memory card being damaged. After a few seconds of panic, I decided to turn the Cube off for a few minutes and try again. When I did that, the card seemed to be working fine again since it loaded and saved my Madden franchise save file. However, I still think my memory card was corrupted or something. I decided to finally try to finish my Pokemon Colosseum game since I've been right at the end of it for months, and I was able to get the official Nintendo strategy guide for a penny. Unfortunately, when I tried to load my save file (from the same memory card as the Madden save file), I got a message saying that there is no Pokemon Colosseum save file on the card. But when I go to the memory card manager, the Pokemon Colosseum file is clearly listed. I guess I'll have to replay the whole damn game now.

If there was a way to reset everyone's post counts back to zero, I'd beg FO to use it.

Anyway, I played a couple hours of Star Ocean 3, and it's alright so far. Very heavy on the sci-fi elements, almost to the extent of Xenosaga. But SO2 started out that way, and after a few hours, switched over to much more of a Fantasy setting. Right now, I'm at the point where the rescue ship warps away from the resort planet. I'm taking my time at the moment.

There was a nice tutorial for the battle system. It seems like there's been a lot of changes since SO2, but some things are similar. The voice acting during story scenes isn't so good, but I think I'll leave it on for now.

Graphics are pretty nice, but some of the characters don't seem to have enough detail or something.

It's nice that even though it's a 2 disc game, it only counts as one rental from Gamefly.

I finished watching Urusei Yatsura 2.

Hmmm...I'm rethinking how I want to do my review of Urusei Yatsura 2. That Captain N review really went on MUCH longer than it needed to, but I was having too much fun picking that episode apart. I don't want to and can't really do that to this movie. For one thing, if I explain all the jokes in the movie, they won't seem funny (it's the type of thing where you just have to see it for yourself), and I don't want to spoil the entire movie either. So, I'm probably going to write it like I would a game review, but I've never done a movie review before, so this might be tough...

And I have WAY many more screencaps than necessary, but what I could do is post a gallery at the end of the review, on a separate page. That way, those who have seen the movie and want pictures of their favorite scenes and characters could find some of them there, and those who haven't and don't want spoilers simply don't have to go to the gallery page.

The Dreamcast disc didn't work, so I tried another method. Here's hoping I can figure this out.

By the way, my Taro keychain broke. He didn't come off from my pulling on him like Kazuo, he just fell off. I went to gather my books after class, and noticed he was lying on the floor. I picked him up, slipped him into my backpack, and he's sitting on my dresser next to Kazuo. As with Kaz, he's all in one piece, just the extra bead I put on his head to feet the ring through disconnected.

Fuse beads DO NOT make good keychains.

Beat 4-B tonight. I wasted 20 minutes trying not to use magic on the boss, then I said 'The hell with it." It takes 3 fully charged hits with Hotsuma.

Then I went back and got the coin with Joe. One thing that I did find out is that, contrary to popular belief, Joe is not weaker than Hotsuma. His fully charged shots took off 33% of the boss's health as well.

Codie: It's been a long time since I've had to deal with burning an Dreamcast emulator disc (I think it's been three years since I even had a DC), so I can't offer any specific advice on that matter.

Which site are you using for your information? DCemulation.com was always able to answer my questions, but again, I haven't been there in ages and I'm not really sure how it's changed over the years (At the very least, it appears to still be there).

Crawl might be able to help you out if that site can't. I don't know how much he knows about NES emulation on Dreamcast, but I'm pretty sure he's had more experience with it than I have.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I've been toying around with an awesome code I got from Jay that generates a random image on the web page every time you reload. I'm going to be putting it on my Comic "menu" where that picture at the top is. I've made about six pictures so far, one of which I made using a sheet of paper, a pencil, a big pink eraser, a super fine sharpie, some colored pencils (this one, I don't know why I bothered with), a regular sharpie, a scanner, and some Paint Shop Pro tools. I think it's neat, and it showed me that I actually can draw (although nothing like Lighthouse draws), and proves how awesome Paint Shop Pro is (Photoshop can probably do anything PSP can, but PSP costs about 1/10 what Photoshop does).

I beat 7-B tonight. It only took me about 5 more tries. I don't know what my problem was last night.

Now I can't even get halfway though 8-A. I die in combat, not from falling. (Well, unless I get knocked off the stage.) Maybe I can chalk it up to playing as Hotsuma, since he's a sitting duck for the first few hits of the combo. It takes about 6 hits to kill the first enemy.

I'm wondering what 8-B will be like.

On a side note, all 3 characters have the same magic power. Some said Joe's was strongest, and Moritsune's weakest. Unless you can power up your magic with your combo, that's not the case.

I barely ended up playing Shinobi at all today. I wonder if I might be getting burnt out on it and should put it on the back burner for a while. Bear in mind I put about 77 hours into it. (I still don't know if time is accumulated while paused, or otherwise not playing, but I now at least believe that either way that that would only account for a small fraction of the total time) When I'm done with "everything", this game will probably be beyond a Xenogears level of commitment.

And maybe coin hunting in 8-B doesn't sound that appealing to me right now.

I was thinking of playing Eternal Darkness after Shinobi, but if I just put Shinobi aside to resume in a short amount of time, I might want a more "pick up and play" type of game. I'm kind of curious about Puzznic for the Playstation. I know it's a no budget, no production values type of game, but that shouldn't make much difference for a puzzle game. And I really enjoyed what I played of the NES version (oddly, I never owned my own copy of it).

I beat 8-A, but missed the coin. Went back through stage select and found it as Joe. It was less well hidden than the Hard coin, IMO. Gave 8-B one shot, but died at the 3rd ogre.

Anyway, Magic doesn't power up with your combo. In fact, it kills it.

I wondered whether they were officially called coins or medals, so I had a look at the manual.

They're not called either one there; they're just called "secrets".

I also noticed that Moritsune is given his other name there (Auzio-whatever). The only time that word/name is mentioned in the game itself is when Hiruko says that Moritsune has been resurrected... even if he's being controlled by the demon lord [whatever the alternate name was].

Just as a random note, one sort of cool thing I noticed recently is that in a couple stages you can see the Golden Palace, and its distance varies accoring to the stage. During the 1-B boss fight, you can see it in the far distance. (For some reason, I thought it looked like a christmas tree at first glimpse.) You can also see it in 7-A, and it's much closer.

I haven't noticed it in any other stages, but I haven't really looked.

Yeah, it's extremely easy to see it in 7-A; it's very apparent in the stage's opening camera pan. However, I hadn't seen it in 1-B.

More trivia: In the 1-B boss fight, there's a sign that says "SKILL UP". But the first and last letters blink out so it says "KILL U". Then more letters blink out.

However, in the stage ending cinema, it's back to saying "KILL U"

But as for the hauler, I guess they weren't thinking... it was probably something like this:

"Hey, I have a great idea for Star Ocean! Lets make a mini game where you have to use a weird animal thing called a hauler to get through a maze. There will be 5 different kinds of haulers, each more difficult for the player to control than the last. If you fail to get through the maze, the player gets sent right back to the beginning! At that point, he or she has to call the hauler back, and wait through two needless scenes before they can try again. Oh, and you can't make the proper turns unless you drive the creature at an agonizingly slow pace, that's an important part!

Wee, I finished all four runthroughs of Mappyland. It really could be done in under an hour.

Those amazon stages blow. In both the third and the fourth playthroughs, you HAVE to have that torch from the tribal stage preceding it. If you don't the flooring won't show up in those caves that you start in in Lv.3, and have to go through to make the bridge appear in Lv.4. And if you get a Game Over (which is pretty easy to do), you lose the torch. Blargh.

Otherwise, it was a very pleasant walk down memory lane.

Not everytime you mark somebody. Last night I got home late and only had time for a few tried at 8-B super. I got the the last Ogre 5 times, and he killed me 5 times.

Tonight, after a few deaths at the hands of the last and second to last ogres, I finally got the last Tate, got the 50th coin, and headed to Hiruko with 3 magics, full life, 23 shurikens, and enough yin to last until I can get the first "hit" on him.

Boy oh boy, this is going to be hard. After a few tries with my usual Hiruko stretegy, I was getting nowhere, and I could sense I needed to change something. So I'm going to try to "ration" the talismans to keep my yin full, then start my combo when the 8 come out at once. Then, magc or not, I'll go for a charge attack in the back. Full hits do so little damage that I gotta try for some major hurt.

I don't know if I can play much longer though. I 've got work to do.

Well, I'm done with Shinob for tonight. I'll have to find a day where I can devote several hours to Hiruko.

I didn't take off more than 25% of his health on any attempt. (But I never got a good shot at his back, either.) He was in the air whenver I finished a combo.

However, I thought of a new strategy to try. Since he always seems to be launching an attack whenever I fill my combo, I decided to wait a few seconds after the 8 talismans appear before starting to kill them.

I did fool aroud with stage 2-A trying to break 80,000 points. I almost did it, but apparently Moritsune took a hit while in a dash attack (and you need the no damage bonus to get to 80,000). I ended up with about 70,600.

That rotating image thing is actually server-side, more specifically PHP. You need your own server to set it up (but some places have rotating images for others to use, which is what DC has in his signature)

Once its set up on the server, it probably doesn't make any difference on ezboard whether you use html or ezcodes to link to it.

I don't know how anybody could handle Star Ocean 3 with the camera set to active instead of fixed. I tried it and had almost no idea what was going on, except right in front of the character I was controlling.

I'm on one of the higher floors of the Kirlsa Training Facility now. This place is really huge with a lot of enemies. Also seems to be a good place to level up if I need to, since you get free unlimited healing.

In other news, I watched Broly: Legendary Super Saiyan yesterday. It wasn't perfect, and ended way too fast, but I liked it a lot better than Return of Cooler.

Oh, I had to use a FAQ in SO3 one more time. I'm renting these games and some stuff I don't feel like wasting the time to deal with. I got a key on floor 3, and I swear the person said something about going up to the roof. I looked around for about an hour for the next set of stairs or a door without any luck. I then checked a FAQ, and the place I had to go was back to the ground floor, to take an elevator up to the 4th floor. That defies logic.

So I fought Shelby, the boss, and it was really easy despite Nel being about 5 levels behind. I even got the battle trophy for beating him in under a minute.

Re: Game Progress Topic 20...The Horror! The Horror!

I've already tried about twice as many times to beat that final boss as I did the final boss of Arc 4, and I've definitely put more hours into it. Crawl probably won't like that I'm going to review the game without beating it, but I just don't see the point. Out of maybe 100 tries, I've only gotten as far as the boss's third form (out of four), and I've only gotten that far exactly once. Too much luck is involved in that battle. And it's not worth going through the boss rehash every single time I want to attempt the final boss nor leaving the X-BoX turned on all the time so I don't have to redo the boss rehash.

I like tough final boss fights, but this reminds me of the complaint I had with Airforce Delta (GBC) in that you had to wait around and hope that fuel canisters appeared. This is almost the same thing - you have to wait around during the first part of the final boss fight for the right crystal combinations to appear so that you can beat his third form. And even if you're lucky enough to get one of each kind of crystal, you have to hope you still have enough time left and that you can get past the second form, which is almost impossible due to Blinx's poor aim and its cheap tactics. (Explain more later...have to get dinner out of the oven...)

I don't like to throw the word "cheap" around too much, but if any boss truly deserves to be called "cheap", this one comes to mind. The problem with the second form is that it splits into two. The boss can use the same time controls that you can, and they have a habit of using the Pause function combined with a ground-pound move. Even if you time your jump to be in the air when they pause you, they'll wait until the pause is just about to wear off, then pound the ground so that you get hit as you land. There is no avoiding this. The second major problem is that when they're vulnerable to being hit, you have to shoot one, then VERY QUICKLY turn and shoot the other. Problem is that one of them is almost always offscreen, so you'll be making a blind shot, and Blinx aims worse than Greedo in Star Wars Special Edition. I really believe the one time I made it to the boss's third form, it was by pure luck and this is the reason why.

When you get to the third form, you have to use one each of the time controls on him to destroy him. Problem here is, if you don't have the time controls collected from the first part of the boss fight, it's nearly impossible to get them now because the boss has a charging move that you can't dodge nor outrun. He stays right on top of you for the whole battle, and you're pretty much dead meat if you don't already have the time controls.

But you have only 10 minutes total for this fight, and if the correct crystal combinations don't appear in the first part of the battle with enough time left over for you to beat the first, second, and third forms, then you're pretty much screwed.

Well, maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way, but the way I'd handle that is... Let's say you got extremely lucky or figured out some new tactic to beat the boss, therefore seeing some ending that probably sucks. Would that be likely to change your opinion on the overall game in even the slightest way? Extremely doubtful, and so I don't think there's anything wrong with doing a review. And it's not like you just tried it two or three times and just gave up. Seems like just poor game design, and makes the complaints I had about the Arc 4 boss seem trivial.

This reminds me of Wario Blast's final boss. I think I fought that thing at least 50 times before I finally beat it (Although I know I didn't spend as much total time fighting it than FO's spent on Blinx's final boss, since on top of fewer attempts I normally got killed within a minute of starting the fight), and 45 of those times I died against the first form (it's really only the first form that's a pain. The next forms weren't bad from what I remember). I don't even know how I beat it that time.

And yes, the ending was garbage. I don't know what it is with Bomberman, but with Wario, it's just a picture of him on the motorcycle, on a cliff, looking at something (exactly what, got me) go boom. Credits roll.

Now, it's a nice picture of Wario's back and some mystery object going boom, but...

Oh yeah, he's a bitch. You can only hit him when he has his hatch open for a shorter period of time than it takes for your bombs to go off, and at the same time he fires a homing missile. Then he starts moving around, and won't open the hatch again until you nuke the homing missile, in which case he fires off another homing missile. At the very beginning of the fight, if you lay down a string of bombs and haul it out of there you can usually land a hit. But after that, it's dumb luck.

What made the next forms easier is that you can nail him at any time.

Re: Game Progress Topic 20...The Horror! The Horror!

One thing I've noticed on a bunch of reviews for Blinx is how they talk about the "potential" the time controls have.

Potential? Blinx's designers had an entire game with 8 worlds (4 stages and a boss fight each) and a 9th world that consists of a multipart final boss fight to prove that they could something do worthwhile with the time controls. As it is, they're nothing more than a gimmick. They occasionally get you past a door, or help you cheese through a boss fight, but that's about it. And to prove how bankrupt the idea of the time controls are...what is the deal with just having to use one of each on the final boss's third form? That's just incredibly stupid. What if, instead, you had to use a particular time control on a particular form of the boss to hit it or make it vulnerable? For example, what if you had to use the Record to make the boss chase your phantom double while you hit it from behind? Or what if the boss caused a problem you'd have to use a Rewind to fix? But just making you use one of each for no real reason is the best they could come up with.

I found a safe spot while fighting that water boss.

I tried beating Blinx one last time, because I thought of a strategy that might work. I figured I'd need to not only get one of each kind of time crystal on the first round, but also a couple of extra pauses. That way, I could pause the boss's second form while he's vulnerable, which would make hitting him easier. I made it to the final boss after completing the boss rehash stage, but unfortunately, came nowhere close to getting the time crystals in the first part of the boss fight before the timer got too close to 10 minutes.

Blinx rhymes with "stinks", and his game sucks more than his vaccuum cleaner.

SO2 was a really excellent game. Everything within it, from battles, overall story, graphics, and character interaction seem much better than in SO3.

That said, I still enjoy SO3 from time to time. It does things in extremes, though. 2 hours in dungeons, followed by a couple hours of story scenes and other non-combat stuff.

I decided not to let Roger join the party because his voice was annoying. I then beat some kind of mud boss in that forest, where I'm supposed to be finding that girl. I forget what her name was. Anyway, for such an urgent task, the characters sure talked for an awfully long time after finding Roger.

I played Resident Evil.

Yup, that door opening thing is from Sweet Home.

There's a room at the very beginning that seems eerily like a Sweet Home reference. There's a statue of a woman holding a vase that kind of resembles the one from the Fountain of Blood, and there's some paintings in there. But it's way too far-fetched for me to submit to the database. Plus, I've just scratched the game, so I don't know if it all comes into play at some time or not.

I'd really like to know who's the genius who came up with these controls. It uses that "Turn your character with left and right, then hit Up to move them forward. Hitting down makes them moonwalk" control scheme that Jade Cocoon uses. But that was an RPG, so at least I could deal with it. Here, I've got zombies chasing me and all. That zombie at the friggin' beginning kept tearing me to pieces because I couldn't figure out how to attack. And when I did figure it out, the guy kept missing. I'm looking up an FAQ for controls.

Which ResEvil does Kennedy debut in? I wanna know a little more about the guy whose curtains I made Kazuo set fire to.

It's actually pretty straightforward to get the best ending even if you upgrade your whip. There's really no need to rush.

As for beating the game without upgrading the whip, well, I've never done that per se. However, at the end of the game I have gone back to the original town and bought the Thorn whip, which gets rid of the flame whip (it's not possible, however, to go back to the leather whip). I've beaten both the Grim Reaper and Dracula with it. The Grim Reaper was actually a bigger pain, in my opinion. I discovered a pretty useful trick to use against Dracula when using a weak whip.

Yeah, I kind of figured I could've upgraded to the chain whip when I beat the game at 4 days and 12 hours (The cut off for the good ending is six days, correct?). My logic was that if I skipped the chain whip, I wouldn't need the holy water until I went back through Jova, which saved me a trip back as well as the time it would've taken to build up hearts, since I was able to just do that at my own leisure in the mansions.

But yeah, I probably could've headed back to town, grabbed the holy water, bought the chain whip and still have come in at around 5 days.

I actually did purchase the Thorn Whip, but it didn't seem any stronger than the Leather one. Am I wrong on that?

Since Grim was the only battle I fought with the thorn whip, I don't know how he compares to Dracula, but it did make him a bit trickier. I died at my first attempt against him, but after that it was just a battle of endurance. I was lucky enough for him to give me enough space to walk under him when he had cornered me to the left edge of the room, and after that I think I took him down before he cornered me to the right, so I was able to defeat him without taking much damage.

I can't imagine Camilla being difficult even with a weak whip, as she has such a specific (And easy) pattern.

When I played CV2, I skipped the second whip, whatever it was (Thorn Whip?). I went straight from Leather Whip to whatever the third one is (Chain Whip?). The reason for that was because this was actually my second attempt at it, because I couldn't seem to get anywhere in my first game. I bought the second whip, soon found the third whip, but couldn't buy it because I didn't have enough hearts. And I kept dying trying to get more hearts, because the second whip wasn't doing a damn thing.

Yeah, normally it is just a good idea to skip the thorn whip altogether. The first mansion is pretty easy without it, you get the chain whip in the town just after that, and building up the hearts to buy it while it'd still be useful takes up a lot of time.

By this time, whenever I play Castlevania 2, I almost always play it the exact same way, getting items and visiting locations in the same order. I'm not saying it's ideal (for, say, time trial purposes), but it is the way I prefer to do it.

And I always do get the thorn whip to start with. I don't know if I can say anything in favor of the practice, but it's the way I've always done it and I'm stuck in my ways. I generally start the game by heading to the woods right of town and level build during the night, then return in the day and buy the thorn whip, the white crystal, and the holy water.

Believe it or not, I didn't know where to find the chain whip until I had beaten the game several times. For some reason (maybe I threw it on floors in the rooms where the walls are fake, and vice versa), I didn't know you could use holy water in the empty rooms in the town. Absolutely nothing essential is hidden in any of them, though (aside from the chain whip, there's also garlic -- which I also never could find at first), so I never suffered any penalty for not knowing this.

I did, of course, know about using holy water in other places, though.

Re: Game Progress Topic 20...The Horror! The Horror!

I decided to give Shinobi a bit of a rest, and started Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando.

One thing that I liked about the first R&C game was that it had a pretty good opening (a cinema that wasn't boring, and then gameplay that was immediately accessible), and it seems like Going Commando has that going for it, too.

It might even have a better beginning. Considering it was just the second thing to do in the game, I had a heck of time getting past the first space mission. (Though it may have just been a problem of me not using the tight turns)

The little planet was kind of clever, too.

I liked Ratchet's original voice actor more, but at least this one doesn't seem to be a disaster, unlike a lot of voice recastings.

It seems there's less voice work in this game, period, so far. (Fewer help messages, no voice for the gadgetron vendor, etc.)

Congratulations! Did you get the programmer's room? Lute's quest is the only one I never finished.

I didn't even know you guys had that game, but sometimes it seems like everybody at this board does. Yeah, it's pretty easy, but I love the music, and some parts are funny, despite the corny Working Designs overhaul. I also like Gryzz and Amon. Amon is probably my favorite character from that game. In fact, if I ever did a list of my favorite game characters, he'd definitely be on it.

FINALLY finished Disc 1 one Garfield & Friends Volume 1. 2 more discs on that one to go, and then I'll have Volume 2 to go through (plus Gargoyles, which I bought awhile ago, but haven't opened yet.)

I'm now fighting the urge to ask, "Mr. Owl, how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?"

Anyway, I decided to relocate my team in franchise mode of Madden NFL 2005. So after this season the Arizona Cardinals will become the Los Angeles Lightning in my game.
