Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

A game where you make progress topics.

I'm falling behind on archiving these, but the other one's big enough.

I purchased Prey for Xbox 360 today and started playing it. Some may remember that I made some negative comments after playing the demo, but I don't think I was in the right frame of mind to play it then. I also was making a simple mistake in terms of figuring out how to get started.

For those who haven't read about the game, Prey's big gimmick is it's portals. The game takes place on an alien spaceship or space station of some kind. You'll find portals you can travel through that take you to other locations instantly. You can look through the portal, spy on what's on the other side, then jump through it. Sometimes they seem to work both ways, and some seem like a one way trip. From reviews I've read, the game also plays around with gravity, letting you fight from the wall or the ceiling. How disorienting this is supposed to be varies from review to review.

You can also apparently leave your (still vulnerable) body and spirit walk to explore otherwise unreachable areas.

Here's an example of a portal:
http://xbox360media.ign.com/xbox360/image/article/723/723268/prey-20060803045926833.jpg

So anyway, I've made a little progress, but I haven't really gotten past the introduction, I don't think. I'm still armed with a wrench instead of a gun.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I finished mapping D3. I didn't find anything else interesting there (last year, I had found a dungeon in that area).

It seemed like it could have been irritating to map -- a mix of open spaces and a lot of trees -- so I relaxed my usual mapping method to expediate the process. I didn't test the walls (in this case, a wall of trees) from all sides. Instead, I just marched through columns of the map, north to south and south to north, and would mark any trees in the east-west directions if I saw them, without bothering to test them. So, that sped the process up considerably.

There's still a question of what to do next. I went to E3, because from both D3 and E2 (and maybe other overworld locations) I could see an odd white mountain on the map. I went to that mountain, and it's a diamond door, but I can't do anything there now.

I could go to B3 and map more of that. That's where the clue relating to the ruby whistle told me to go.

I'm not sure if I want to go back to Dragadune yet. Maybe soon.

I believe I said in the previous game progress topic that I'm keeping a list of ruby riddle guesses in my map notebook. I'm checking off the ones I've tried, and writing down others to try later. I was thinking of accumulating a few before going back, but now I almost feel tempted to try my most recent guess. I may be fooling myself, but I think it's a good one...

Anyway, also in the last topic I made a few comments about the length of the game. FO sort of suggested to me, irl, that perhaps the game, while clearly long, didn't necessarily seem super-long to her. I think she said she wouldn't have guessed she went much over 100 hours on it, at least. It's hard to make an accurate estimate, though; the game, of course, has no timer.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

Prey...

I just got the ability to spirit walk and found the gravity changers. In order to change gravity, you have to go into your spirit form, and shoot the spirit bow at one of these gizmos. When hit, wherever the gizmo is sitting becomes "Down".

I also found out what happens when you die (though I already knew from reviews). You have to fight the dishonered dead in the spirit world, and depending on how well you do, you start with more or less health at the spot where you died. So yes, there's really no way to get a serious game over and lose progress, and some have complained about that. But I agree with those who say that this system is better than take a few steps, shoot stuff, save, take a few steps, shoot, save, etc, which is typical with this genre.

The game areas are often dark, but you have a lighter you can use, sort of like the flashlight in Doom 3. You can't keep it on all the time though. I don't know if it just shuts off or explodes or what, but there is a meter that rises as you keep it lit.

And this game does run on the Doom 3 engine, BTW. I don't think the graphics are anything that make me think, "OMG, this is great, never could've been done on the previous generation" but they are nicely detailed.

The reason the portals are so cool is that they're real time. It's not like you just see what's on the other side, jump in, and it loads that area. It's all instantaneous, and you can step back and forth from one environment to another seamlessly. It's like a hole opened up in your house and it led to Alaska, and you could step in and out and be in either place (or have half your body in one and half in the other without dying).

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I sort of wanted to play more Killer7 today, but somehow I came down with a really bad cold. I must've gotten it from someone at the zoo the other day. It's the only explanation. I spent almost the whole day sleeping and the only thing of note I got done was that drawing of Nucleo and Cory.

I don't really know what to think of Killer7 so far. I beat some weird boss that lays eggs, although it wasn't much of a boss. It reminded me vaguely of the first boss of Rayman 2 in that you had to do something weird to beat it.

It doesn't seem to me like the game makes any sense. It's as though Capcom knew there was no way to logically explain why there's a guy who has 7 personalities inside a TV set that he can change into at any time, so they don't even bother trying to explain it.

I did end up going to the location in B3 that was hinted at. That took me to the Enchanted [Forest?] dungeon. It has at least two floors, but after mapping the first one I went back to Sorpigal to save.

For the heck of it, here are some maps I've made (click for much larger versions).

This is a map of a desert area (so there's not a lot of walls):

And this is the area I just now finished mapping.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I almost thought the board lost some time or posts, until I remembered that I didn't actually post my very last game progress of the night.

(Spoilers)

I started the second basement of the Enchanted Forest. In the basement, I was told I completed a major quest. (It was sort of a surprise, because the last step of the quest wasn't a puzzle or a boss or anything) But I got an experience reward, and the gold key.

The gold key surprised me, because I could have sworn I already had it. Maybe I got it from the Ice Princess..? But I looked back through my notes, and found that from her you get the DIAMOND key. But the weird thing about that was that I had just found a white mountain in E3 that needed the diamond key, but I didn't have it.

So, I must have either never saved after getting the diamond key, or I lost it somehow. Long story short, that white mountain leads to the Astral plane. I don't think it'd be a good idea to explore that area just now. You can't use your automap, and in fact apparently can't even use the locate spell. So, that'll be tricky.

I finished off my game of Magic of Scheherazade and actually beat it at Level 23. I don't think you get any more spells after that so it's not even necessary to level up anymore.

After an eternity I finally got past those conveyor belts in Kingsley's Adventure. Since I got the gloves I surmised they'd let me wheel in that anchor in the beach area, and indeed they did. I beat the alligator boss in the ship, and the proceeded to the abbey where I'm stuck once again on the boss.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I was exploring the "Lost World" (or the land that time forgot) in E-1, and somehow made it to the hourglass in the middle of the area. I was asked to rotate it, and declined. I was then attacked by some easy enemies (the - only? - result of the decision), and then got a game over from some brutally powerful ones.

I wanted to try it again, but rotate it, but after several tries, all of which ended in game overs before I could even reach the hourglass, I gave up.

I have 3/4 of Dusk mapped. The area I just finished got me the Amulet of the Undead. That area didn't allow magic nor camping. However, if you defeat some Vampires nearby, you can camp where they were.

Most of the other stuff I started mapping but left unfinished looks like it'll be a pain to map. So, I wanted to try something new. I remembered about how Ranalou is supposed to warp you to 6 castles. Well, I had only found 3 on my own (Blackridge North and South, and Dragadune). The previous (and, till then, only) time I visited Ranalou, I had declined to use the warps, which got me kicked out.

This time, ...

Well, before I used any warps, I fought another "Experiment, Keep Out" battle. This time, it was against invisible eyes. At my current level, they were easy. The only problem was, they stole Sonya's backpack! I couldn't recall what was in it, so I reset. I at least would have lost the bronze key, and I believe the ruby idol as well.

Anyway, I took the first warp, which took me to Castle WW (I don't know what the abbreviation stands for yet). I've finished a spiral in one corner of the castle, which I guess we're supposed to interpret as a tower. At the top was a "vicious demon" prisoner, which I freed.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I pretty much finished mapping Castle WW [White Wolf?]. I won't add it to the map thread, though, because I still have quests for Lord Iron Fist.

The first one was to find Raven's Stronghold, which I was surprised I didn't get an instant victory for. However, it could be that I never left that dungeon without getting a game over first! Anyway, that was the last major thing I did tonight. The next quest was to find Lord Kilburn, which WAS instantly completed. And the one after that was to find the secret of Portsmith. Well, I'm pretty sure I know what that is -- the Succubus Queen -- but I haven't survived that even long enough to run. Maybe next time, I'll try with a party of all females.

After finishing Castle WW, I had enough experience to level up all but two of my characters. And by the end of the night, even those two leveled up. Most of my characters are at level 18. Lilac is the most behind; she's only at 15. I hope that the next time she gains an experience level, she'll also gain a spell level.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

Damn. This is all making me really want to play that game again. Especially since I lost my maps in the apartment flood and would like to make them again. I don't know if I should start it right now though. I should at least finish my Rockin' Kats review first. And I had planned to make a site for Drakkhen first...

I took a look at my old file. I could have SWORN that when I made it my goal to beat the Succubus Queen, I took the three females out of my party and replaced them with three characters at the inn in Portsmith. I then took my party to the basement so that my original males could have their gender reversed. I could have sworn I renamed those characters with three other IA names. I thought one of them for sure was Tomi. But I just checked the roster and all the unused characters still have their original names. So, maybe I didn't rename them after all...I guess it makes sense since I would have had to take them all the way back to Sorpigal first. Probably decided it wasn't worth the trouble.

However, somehow Azalea's name got corrupted. The "AL" in the middle of her name has turned into Japanese letters.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

Well, I changed my party to all females. I just left my three original female characters behind, and went to the gender-switching pool with only my three original male characters. There weren't any tough enemies on the way, so it wasn't a problem.

I encountered the Succubus Queen again. She (or her party) still killed three or so of my characters, but Rigel got a turn and I was able to use his (her) Run magic.

So, that finished that "quest". The next one is to find the Pirate's Cove. Blithes' Peak told me it was west of B3. So, I flew to A3, but took a step East, though a one-way passage back to B3. It was a part of B3 I hadn't mapped yet, though, so I decided to just go with it. I found Castle WW's exterior, and indeed it is Castle White Wolf. I suppose it isn't too far from White Wolf cave, though they are on different grids.

I noticed that FO's game file has characters over level 100 (my maximum - 18!). Her characters also hit about 25 times, while mine are hitting 5. However, damage maxes out at 255, so after a while, those extra hits won't do anything.

I got my new AC adapter for the PS2 today. It seems to work fine, not that there was really any reason why it shouldn't. With all this controversy over EBGames/Gamestop, maybe I should continue buying from estarland when I can. Unless anyone has any horror stories about them, too.

I'm gonna try to get at least one GPT uploaded, then maybe play something.

EDIT: I did upload the second to most recent topic. I still want to do more Chrono Trigger captions, but still can't find the time.

I explored various areas of A3, A4, and B4 (and also B3), and didn't find the pirate's cove. I did, however, come across a Monty Python and the Holy Grail reference. You reach a bridge that stretches across the mist, and a hooded man (though the sprite is just that of Ranalou) appears. He says he'll have to ask each of you a question before you can pass. The question, of course, is, What is your favorite color? (Okay, it's really what is your aura's color. Same thing)

I explored so much that most of my characters are within 2 Lich fights of leveling up, if I would choose to do that.

Anyway, everyone has now leveled up.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I'm giving serious thought to ditching Sage, my robber, and starting over with another character.

The problem is, what class? One problem with a knight, or even a paladin, is that to be effective, they'd need to be in the front row. And a level 1 character couldn't survive in the front row in my current campaigns.

Also, no matter how powerful a knight is, they can only attack one enemy per round.

I really don't use my cleric all that much. She's not completely useless like the robber, but one seems to be enough. You only need one to cure poison, paralysis, and other status conditions. You'd only need one to bring a character back to life, unless your cleric is also dead. And in that case, it seems like the thing to do would be to retreat to Sorpigal. And how often would I need to use Cure3 twice in one round? In that situation, I'd probably be hammered so hard I'd lose pretty soon anyway.

So, that leaves a wizard or an archer.

Between the two, I think another archer would be best. Either one would become useful as soon as they learn level 3 spells (That's the first time you learn spells that can attack multiple enemies - Bolt and Fire). But even the wizard would have a ways to go before he'd learn level 6 or 7 spells. Also, the archer just seems more versatile. Like I said, my current archer is already doing 60-some points of damage per physical attack. That puts her where the knights were a few levels ago.

One problem would be boosting the new acher's levels. That shouldn't be too bad. I'd just keep her in the back row, and safe, and fight a few powerful enemies (maybe the Lich / Mummy favorite to start with). That should at least get her out of level 1 quickly.

The only serious problem I'm having with this plan of thought is that this would mean I'd probably have to put Lilac in the front row. Sage can take a 50 hp shot to the gut standing up (and several even minor enemies are dishing that out), but for Lilac, that would put her at death's door.

I'm thinking maybe I should go through with this anyway, if only on an experimental basis, and see how it plays out.

If you want to experiment with another character in place of a Robber, you might as well. If you don't like it, you can always go back and put the robber back in your party. It's not like it's a permanent choice.

My Robber in my old file (Sesa) is so useless that everyone else can safely untrap locks and chests, but when I have him try it, we always get caught in the trap! And it's not even worth having him untrap Treasure Chests since he doesn't use the Gems.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I found a minor (though amusing) graphic glitch in Might and Magic just a little while ago when messing around with my old save file. I probably knew about it years ago, but just forgot until now.

When you defeat enemies, there are several different death animations depending on the type of enemy and how you killed it. Normal (non-boss) enemies usually crumble when beaten with a weapon, or explode when beaten with a spell. The glitch occurs if you try to cast an attack spell on an enemy during battle, but get the message "Magic cannot be used here". If that character then defeats an enemy with a weapon, it will explode as though it was defeated with the spell instead of crumble like it should.

Speaking of Might and Magic glitches, I mentioned on my Glitches page some vague information about equipping a sling on the wrong character. I can't remember how to do it, but at least I now know for sure I didn't imagine that glitch because apparently once you get it to work, there's no way to ever "undo" it. My wizard (Nucleo) still has a "phantom" sling equipped. When you look at his equipment, there are no shooting weapons equipped on him, but he still has the option to shoot in battles, and yes, the game acts as though he shot a Sling if you choose that.

I might even be able to get screen captures of that...

I double-checked Nucleo's Equipment. He doesn't appear to have a shooting weapon, but I noticed that the option to shoot only shows up when he's not in the front row of battle. So now I'm not really sure if it's the glitch still causing that option to appear or if the Sorcerer Staff is allowing him to shoot one bolt from the back row. I can't remember if that weapon has that property or not. I suppose I could test that theory by unequipping it and trying another weapon, then re-equipping it, but I didn't think to do that until just now. I'll check it in a little while...

But here's the screenshot of Azalea's corrupted name:

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

Well, I gave the archer thing a try. Right now, the new archer (Azalea) is about at level 7.

When I recruited her, she only had 4 hp maximum!! However, even at level 1, she was doing more damage than Sage was at level 18! Now, she's doing 2 hits, for about 27 points of damage, and if Hero2 is cast on her, she'll do 3 hits. She also has learned level 1 spells. (Again, an archer as a wizard is sort of useless until they learn level 3 spells, though I guess at least I could have her use Locate occasionally)

She's already at the point where it's no longer possible to level her up in a couple of fights, though.

Level 100? Sheesh, I think I'm at level 8 or something. I probably put 40 hours into Might and Magic so far and I've just barely scratched the surface. This game is probably longer than Ultima Exodus. (Which took me a long, long time.)

I think M&M is a good example of an open-ended game. There seems to be many more places open to early-level (i.e., 5 or 6) characters than your typical RPG of that era.

Seems to me the way that game goes is to just find clues/items/locales that, if they make no sense at the time, they will at some point. None of the "find the merchant to sell you the ruby to give to the king who will give you the scepter that will cast the spell to open the door" always-in-the-same-order-for-everyone type game.

I don't know if there is any significance to it. It looks like the data corruption just caused two random letters from the game's charset to appear in place of the "AL". At least I now know for sure that they are Japanese letters.

Quote: She's already at the point where it's no longer possible to level her up in a couple of fights, though.

Au contrair. I can level up in a couple of fights by fighting the enemies in the Land That Time Forgot. The Dinobeetles and Rocs in particular give a lot of experience IF you can kill a good number of them before they run off. I just leveled everyone up at least two levels today and some characters, like Robin (Knight) and Cory (Cleric) went up three.

Edit - Meant to say Robin is a KNIGHT. Deuce is my Archer.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I don't think fighting Rocs would make it possible to gain multiple levels in one fight.

Actually, I did managed to have everyone survive a Roc fight, and we got 30,000 exp. Don't get me wrong, that's a lot of experience, more than any other reliable source of experience I'm aware of. But my characters now need about 70,000+ experience points to level up.

It does seem like it's possible for experience levels to sort of explode, though. I think part of that may be that the required experience to gain a level saturates at some point. I've needed ~70,000 experience to level up for some time now.

Not only have I gotten my new archer to level 8 (and doing 3 hits per round, and somehow only 13 hp lower than Lilac), I also have gotten my knights to level 21. The last time I mentioned my levels was yesterday, when they were at 18. So, that's a 1/6 boost, in much less than 1/6 of the total real time I've spent on the game.

I almost think I'm ready to go back to normal questing. I think I was having trouble with Dinobeetles on the third basement of Dragadune, but that was many levels ago. Now, they're no trouble for me at all.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I beat Rockin' Kats again tonight including the bonus stage. I didn't have anywhere near as much trouble with the bonus stage as I did before. But there are still several things of note:

1. The grab-and-throw move has absolutely no practical use in the game at all. I've beaten it every time without using it once. There is hardly every anything on-screen that you can actually grab anyway.

2. The boxing glove is still awkward. There are portions of some levels where you have to punch down at the ground to propel yourself up to the next platform. Many times, the glove goes right through the floor, and I have no idea why.

3. Likewise, sometimes the glove misses when you catapult from one object and try to latch onto the next. One of the rooms in the bonus stage requires you to do this over a pit of water. Since Willy flies so quickly and the glove fires so quickly, it's very difficult to time. Sometimes, I'd miss because the glove wouldn't catch, but I'd hit an enemy and get bumped up before hitting the water, granting me a second chance.

Rockin' Kats is still better than the Rescue Rangers games or Bonk (and I think I can trust Crawl's account of that game, especially since I've seen a lot of it in action), but it's "Kabuki Quantum Fighter"-mediocre. Both games have an unusual, but awkward method of attack. Both games are really short and easy, but the awkwardness of the play control in some areas inflates the difficulty.

I found the Pirate's ship "Anarchist" and beat the pirates (easily; Meteor wiped most of them out on its own), but that didn't fulfill Ironfist's quest of finding the Pirate's hidden cove. (I know the ship is not a cove, but I thought there was a connection between them).

I started exploring C4, but I got attacked by sea serpents who killed me pretty much out of the blue (and the other enemies in that area were easy for me).

I would really urge anyone playing this game to dump their robber as soon as possible and replace him with a better class. "As soon as possible" might mean "when your cleric can cast level 4 spells", because if a trap goes off, you'll want to be able to cure poison. But after that, it's probably okay for any class to untrap objects, and even if a trap goes off, who cares? Cure the status ailments and camp, and the effect is rendered moot.

As for what to replace him with, that's your discretion. If you'd want a knight or paladin, you'd probably have to do the change really early for the new character to not be too far behind. I still think it's probably unnecessary to have multiple clerics. But any combination of multiple archers or wizards could be good (and I'm happy so far with my 2 archers / wizard party).

Already, having another party member that is actually useful in battles has helped (and it didn't take long for Azalea to contribute in some way, and once she learns level 3 spells, I expect her to become even more useful) make random battles go easier and faster.

Now, it seems whenever I have Vyrana cast Moon, the message area says "Azalea cast a spell". Weird.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I finally figured out that boss in the catacombs of Kingsley's Adventure. It was something really simple that I had to do that I just overlooked. I was trying to get on top of the platforms and from there, leap into the air to strike him, but I surmised that was almost impossible with this game's play control and camera system. So I knew it had to be something else. I also beat the Eagle boss and the bull. The eagle was pretty easy so long as I followed his pattern and kept my distance from his eggs. The bull was a little tougher, but not too bad once I got the timing down. You really do have to time it just right or it's almost impossible to win that fight. I went to the next area but haven't started the dungeon yet. I just talked to Cornflake or whatever that wizard's name was and visited his house.

Oh, dammit, now I'm starting to catch the Might & Magic bug and I'm thinking of getting back into it. I never got past the Maze of the Minotaur in that game, though I did get the key from the dog in there because I remember it telling me to "Remember BJ". I'm sure that actually has a meaning somewhere in the context of the game, but I still found it amusing. Beyond that I got to the boss and was wiped out.

Well, the good thing about Might & Magic's nonlinear nature is that you don't HAVE to worry about "getting past" the Maze of the Minotaur (aka Enchanted Woods Dungeon) if you're not ready. Go explore elsewhere and you'll find plenty to do that you ARE ready for.

I also somehow ended up in that dungeon early on and found it was too hard. I got the key and ended up doing that quest where that guy makes you climb a bunch of trees instead.

I did some stuff in Ratchet and Clank. I made it to the forest planet, but couldn't locate that robot Leutenant (sp) after going through it three times, and I get the feeling he's behind the door I need a Tresspasser for. Then I backtracked through some planets and found some plumber that sold me an Infobot with data on a desert planet. I didn't go exploring, but maybe there's something there.

Ha, I gained about 5 levels and still can't touch Lavos. I just shut the game off after even his early form was giving me trouble because of status effects. He removes your defenses and then uses confuse, etc. on you, and I'm not sure what to do about that. Marle also takes extreme damage from physical attacks and I'm not quite sure why. I'm really kind of bored with this now and will probably put the game away for a while. I've beaten Lavos many times in the past, I think I just had parties better suited to it.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

Crawl and I watched Toy Story 2 last night. It was the first time I'd ever seen it. I can see why IGN called it the #1 gretaest animated movie...not because I agree, but because it has a lot of videogame-related humor. It's rare to see that kind of humor in anything without it having an anti-videogame message, so it's something that enthusiasts can appreciate.

I liked the movie, but not only can I not say it's the best animated movie I've ever seen, but I don't even think it comes close to topping the first Toy Story. I've said before that Toy Story had so many advantages in being Pixar's first film, and I don't think any of their movies since have topped it. But Toy Story 2 felt like one of those "let's get the old gang together for one more romp" type of sequels, and that's exactly what goes on for most of it - characters romping around.

It does have its moments though. The fight between the second Buzz and Zurg on the elevator and what happens with them afterwards was the funniest part.

I actually might like Toy Story 2 a little more than the first one because it has a lot more of the other characters being in it. Hamm and Rex are my favorites.

Well, okay, I started that underground dungeon in Kingsley's Adventure but I can only get as far as the room with the swinging sawblades before I crap out of lives. I am terrible at making jumps in this game and that damn camera doesn't help any.

That dungeon is really long and really hard, so you're just going to have to take it one step at a time and try to get really good at each room so you can go farther on your limited number of lives.

I thought that was the best part of the game, but the momentum went out of it after the boss fight. I was expecting another dungeon in the final area, but all that was left was the final boss and he's pretty easy.

On the other hand, those who would have a tendency to think Reggie's Castle Ruins is too long and difficult might be relieved in knowing that it's the last dungeon. And it's not like it won't give you your money's worth.

I went to the desert planet in Ratchet and Clank (which is called Aridia, hahaha), found the Tresspasser and hoverboard dude, then found that robot guy on Eudora (...is it just me and my perverted mind, or does it look like he shit the Infobot?), went through the space station (and found the Hydrodisplacer), and I just launched myself to the planet with the hoverboard races.

Seems good so far.

I was almost delirious with tiredness last night, but I decided to try out the PS2 and make sure it's still working okay. I put in Gran Turismo 4 long enough to make sure that I still suck at it. Then, I put in Shadow of the Collosus. Being as tired as I was, I really just wanted to see what the game looked like, not watch any cinemas or story scenes. So I hit start and actually reached real gameplay within seconds... that's a switch. The game told me what button to use to get on the horse, and how to hold up your sword to make a ray of light (I guess to find a colossus) and then I rode around like a moron for 10 minutes. The world is very empty, but I actually liked the style. It might wear out it's welcome over the course of the game, but I enjoyed exploring this sad, strange world. Maybe later, I'll actually watch the beginning part and try to find some poor colossus to kill.

In Ratchet and Clank, I had one of those "did something out of order, so the following dialogue made no sense." I went and found Captain Quark before winning the hoverboard race, and Ratchet says something like "Hey, it's us! Ratchet and Clank! From the hoverboard race?" THEN I went and won the Hoverboard race.

Why do I get the feeling the R.Y.N.O. is some sick joke weapon that I'll pay 150,000 bolts for and it's intentionally crap?

It's not crap. In fact, it kills even the final boss nearly effortlessly. But trying to save up for it on your first play-through is a terrible idea.

Firstly, because, like I said, it'll take the challenge away.

Secondly, because it'd take forever. If you choose to play a New Game + of the game eventually, you'd be able to get it then.

I just reached Chapter 7 in Prey. There's 20 something altogether. I don't know if part of the problem is my TV, because I had the same issue with part of Kingdom Hearts, but this game is really dark, making parts of it not that much fun to play.

The end of the last chapter featured what appeared to be ghost children laughing, taunting, and trying to kill me. It seemed like you could disperse them temporarily but not destroy them altogether. Eventually, a blue portal opened up and took me to the next chapter.

Oh man, I started Shadow of the Colossus again, but watched the intro this time. The pre-title screen stuff almost put me to sleep. It's just the hero riding his horse through various terrain endlessly. The post title screen scenes just continue from where that part left off, but eventually the hero reaches his destination.

And listen to the epic story that unfolds.

His girlfriend died as a sacrifice. Some strange beings that we hear but don't see can maybe bring her back to life. Probably. But not unless the hero destroys a bunch of idols in that same room. Problem is, you can't just go hit them with your sword. They must be crazy glued or taped together real good. Instead, you have to go fight their living incarnations instead... the Colossi. And maybe after slaughtering these things that probably never did anyone any harm, your girlfriend will come back to life. So yeah, it's all quite ridiculous.

And just to have it down somewhere, my bet is that the Colossi are good, these beings promising resurrection are evil, and that the hero is being tricked.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I beat the first colossus. It was pretty massive. If it stomps it's foot in your general vicinity, you're thrown to the ground. It also tries to hit you with it's club if you're far away or step on you if you're close.

You beat it by climbing up on it's leg (the leg with the exposed hair/fur, so you can get a grip on it.) Then, you stab it a couple times in that leg and it falls over, allowing you to climb up higher. Eventually, you're able to reach it's head, and stab it again and again. The whole thing is really kind of gruesome. Each time you stab it, it's equivalent of blood just gushes out. And then, when it's dead, you feel pretty bad about the whole thing because it seemed more like an innocent creature than a monster.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I tried out Dragon Fighter. First I did a test run (because I had to polish the connectors with Q-Tips for an hour to get it clean enough to work), turned it off after I died, then on my first "serious" play I got to the final stage and ran out of lives.

Uh, this game kind of sucks. The level design is flat, stuff becomes really easy when you turn into a dragon (which you get energy for every time you kill an enemy), and enemies respawn too much. The fifth level has so much crap flying around that it's mostly about stocking up on Dragon Power on those respawning skeletons, then blazing through for a short while as the with the Blue Dragon (whose shots home in on enemies), then stopping and killing the skeletons again until you have a full meter, then morph and fire away again (the fact I got to the final stage on my first serious try should say something about how easy this game is).

It's a platformer, but when you turn into a dragon it becomes more of a shmup; the screen starts autoscrolling, and depending on what color you are you have a different kind of shot. The final stage is nothing but flying and shooting stuff with the dragon, and the background is flying by so fast it's supposed to give a feeling of "I'm really flying now!" but instead just causes a headache.

Plus, in total laziness, there isn't even a death animation. When you lose all your health the screen just fades out and you get a Game Over message.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

And, I beat Dragon Fighter, dying twice. Once on the water stage, once against the final boss.

The first time I got to the final boss, I got to its third form and took it cautiously, and got killed. The second time I got to its third form, I just ramboed it, and still had about a third of my meter left.

I guess the music and graphics are okay, but the game's as easy as Rescue Rangers and has practically no level design.

I watched Wrath of Khan again tonight. In my childhood, this was a favorite of mine, one of those I'd watch again and again until I was sick of it.

It's been a while since I've last viewd it... this was only the second time I've seen it on DVD. I found it extremely enjoyable, somewhat to my surprise. I thought that some movies could only be seen so many times before you never wanted to go back to them again.

There's really very little in Star Trek, TV or film, that can be said to reach the level of this movie, IMO.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I rewatched the Master of the Universe movie in preparation for something for my site.

There actually were some things I didn't remember correctly, which is why I wanted to rewatch it before I did what I was planning. For example, when Lundgren (A) pulls the Sword of Greyskull out of that pedestal Skeletor rammed it into and (B) appears in that jewel Kevin holds up at the very end, I thought he was wildly swinging the sword around; he just holds it in the air. And he doesn't say "I have the power" as horribly as I thought he did; it's like how I was about to send that "MEH-DEE-KAY-SHUN" line from Universal Soldier to YTMND, but when I heard it a second time realized it wasn't as ridiculous as I thought it was (although it was still pretty bad, just not enough to get me to bothering ripping it, getting an image, and sending it to YTMND).

Since I already knew what was happeneing, I did a lot of mental MST3King.

Anyway, we had a pretty good day there, I suppose. We missed several of the big rides (Top Thrill Dragster, Millenium Force, the Gemini, the Magnum, the Corkscrew, Max Air, Disaster Transport. Also, they took out White Water Landing!!) -- I'm not sure how the timing worked out on that, because I'm pretty sure there was at least one time when we did every major ride in one trip, and others where we missed only one or two.

But we still got a few in (Iron Dragon, Wild Cat, the Mean Streak, the swings, the mine ride, the power tower [going down], The Mantis, Skyhawk [this year's new ride], Antique Cars [FO didn't want to do this -- it's sort of a baby ride -- but it was after we ate, so she also didn't want to do a coaster right away; I had her drive the car], the Ferris wheel, the scrambler, the matterhorn, the calypso, and finished up with The Raptor [our favorite], the blue streak [we rode in first place], and [as is sort of becoming our tradition for last ride] Cedar Downs.)

The last real thing we did there was have FO play a game of Donkey Kong in the arcade.

Anyway, this morning, I got a little bit of Might and Magic in. I didn't do too much of note -- just more exploring of C4 -- but I did find the Jolly Raven.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I got some worthwhile stuff done in Might and Magic!

(Some spoilers)

In C4, while exploring the weeping woods, I found a warp to the 4th level of Perilous Peak. I've mapped about a quarter of that floor so far.

That's a weird area -- before you enter in the bulk of the dungeon, there's a sign that says, "DANGER! Dungeon under construction!"

That's a gimmick they tried to run with -- lots of areas are open, there are free standing walls that don't make halls or rooms, or even free standing doors, and some walls or doors only work or appear from one side.

Also, the area doesn't let you use an automap, but fortunately you can still use Locate magic to help with your own map.

One thing I found in that area is a hallway that has dragons at every step. As I recall, there's a party of Blue, Gray, Red and Silver Dragons. Each party has three dragons each.

Anyway, that is now the premier part of the game for me to level up. I've been able to wipe out the entire dragon parties before they get a move. The Silver Dragons gives 10,000 exp, I believe, and the Red, 7,500. It's rather lucrative.

In fact, not only do they give a lot of experience, I also recently for the first time in a long time changed my characters' equipment. I got some Plate Mail +3 from them. I gave Crawl's that, and his old Plate Mail +2 to Sonya (who had PM + 1).

At the end of the hallway was another black and white checkered room. And, YES, I got the W Queen Idol there!

After I told FO that, she said which room gets the idols must be determined randomly, because she said she didn't get an idol in P. Peak.

I was hoping to find the Pirate's cove, but this area might be the best for me to explore now, since the enemies' strengths are matched to mine.

Aside from the dragons, I've also fought some other enemy parties there that gave me about 5,000 exp each.

Also, there's a square with what might be considered a miniboss fight, in the form of Chaotic and Black Knights (and a Titan). I did some damage to that party, but it gave me a game over.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I played more Killer 7 today. I think I maxed out Dan Smith's levels and I've gotten as far as the Colloseum.

The game's puzzles are very much like Resident Evil's.

I wouldn't say this game is "high art", but one thing it does remind me of are those "art movies" that they made fun of Saturday Night Live in that "Dieter's Dream" sketch (which unfortunately does not have a transcript available at that site.) Really bizarre, inexplicable things happen, like opening up a dryer to find a woman's head inside. The head proceeds to talk to you while making internet message board smilies at the end of her sentences, which makes no sense since she's talking out loud to you. Stuff like this isn't explained and is taken for granted, so it's like when when Dieter rolls down the limo window and a deer is driving the car, but no one questions it.

This is the first game in which I've actually heard the word "fuck" used. It was in Conker's Bad Fur Day, but they bleeped it out (it was still extremely obvious that's what they were saying, though.) But of course, in true Capcom style, they can't just have a character say, "You're fucked!" They have to have him say it in a really overdone, drawn-out fashion, "Yooouu're.............FUUUUUCCCCKKKKKED!"

I don't know if that's so much Capcom style as it is just, "We're saying "fuck" in a videogame, and it's a BIG DEAL!"

Anyway, I'm about halfway through mapping P. Peek 4 [sic]. I found one room with 8 and 12 headed hydras, which were fairly tough, and then SIXTEEN headed hydras, plus a gold dragon! (Who has a completely different sprite than the other dragons, who are palette swapped). I managed to beat that party, though (getting about over 20,000 experience).

That could be true, too, but what made me think it's just typical of the voice acting in Capcom games is because that's what some characters in Resident Evil Zero are like, too. Example: Billy's "Ahhhhh...you're with....STAAAAARRRRSSS" line.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I'm up to the second level of Killer7. This area is extremely huge. I'm getting a lot better at hitting the enemies in their weak spot to kill them in one hit. I've leveled up Coyote Smith a little.

I also recognized Jennifer Hale as the voice of one of the characters (the girl that's slapping around Harman Smith in the cutscene between the first two chapters.) I also thought the narrator sounded familiar and after looking it up on IMDB I see that it's Jack Angel, whom I also know from a lot of different cartoons.

Another thing - When I got to the end of the first level and heard the dialogue between Harman (the guy you play as) and the villain Kun Lan, I got the suspicious feeling that the writers got the idea for these characters from Xavier and Magneto of the X-Men, mainly because Harman is in a wheelchair and just something about their interaction.

Now, I just read something on a website that said these two used to be friends and play chess together. Okay, that pretty much confirms it.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

It's late. But I got some stuff accomplished in Might and Magic.

I pretty much finished mapping P. Peak 4. The only thing I didn't do was beat that one party.

After I mapped that area, I had gained a bunch of items, so I thought I'd see what would be good to add to my equipment.

Rather than just having generic items with bonuses (eg., Flail +2), I'm now getting named items (eg., Flail of Fear).

I first tried to give Crawl the Axe Destroyer, but he's the wrong alignment for that. Sonya is evil, so I gave it to her instead. Crawl got the Sword of Speed. That lowered his Might by 2, but it raised his speed by 6 (versus having some two handed axe equipped -- possibly the Great Axe +2). I think that could be a worthwhile trade off. Enemies that have been killing me have been doing so mainly not because I can't damage them much, but because they get so many turns to my 1 (or they just kill me off before I even get a turn). And in the long run, once the damage starts to saturate, speed will definitely be more important than more, redundant strength. But that's a ways off. Even so, Crawl still does more than 100 points of damage a turn.

Since he now has a one-handed weapon equipped, I also gave him the Fire Shield. That boosted his AC from perhaps 11 to 16.

I don't think I changed anyone else's equipment much. I had something like a Jade Amulet, but was told that every character I have is the wrong class for it.

After all this stuff (the mapping, the level gaining, and the equipment shuffling), I thought it might be a good idea to give Raven another try.

Before the fight, I camped to restore my hit points, I cast all manner of spells on my party (Armor, Fire Protect, Elect. Protect, Magic Defense, and so on. Most of those were probably irrelevant, since Raven, as far as I know, doesn't use, for instance, fire attacks. But they shouldn't hurt). I also had Rigel use a speed and magic potion, and Sonya a might potion.

That did get Crawl and Rigel to go first. I didn't want to risk Prism with Rigel (sometimes it doesn't work), so I used Sword. I don't even remember how worthwhile that was, but I suppose if a fighter didn't quite wipe out a Master Archer in one turn, that the magic could be the coup de grace.

The enemy party did end up wiping out all but perhaps two of my party (Crawl for sure, and Sonya might have been the other survivor). Raven had the ?? for hit points, but I don't believe he had much more than 100. At one point, a hit took him down to about 50 hp. When Crawl's turn came up, there were two archers, and Raven himself. I wasn't sure who would be most deadly left alive, but I thought if ANY of them attacked me, it'd be a game over. I attacked Raven, wondering if maybe that would incite the other enemies to run. The attack did do him him, and the other enemies DID run.

So, I won.

The downside is that I apparently got NOTHING for beating him -- well, except 20,000 exp, and some gold and gems. But no items.

A clue in that area says there are 5 tests. I don't know what that clue means. There are 4 battles that are foreshadowed with lines like "THE SECOND TEST". Perhaps Raven himself is the 5th test. But maybe not. I eventually filled in just about every square on that map (using Warp), and didn't find anything else.

:/ I have a feeling I'm missing something.

At least for all my adventuring there I was able to gain a few more levels. Azalea is now at level 10, and can cast level 3 magic! I said before that that should make her even more useful. That might be a pointless observation (shouldn't any new skills make a character more useful?), but to be more specific: She has the last move in my party's line up, and sometimes the rest of my party has left 2 or 3 weakened enemies behind. In a situation like that, she could cast Bolt, and end the battle after only one round.

That chess thing is mentioned right in that first conversation. I thought that game kinda sucked but I didn't finish it.

I've started Final Fantasy 9 again in an attempt to finish it. I just beat King Leo and did the sword-fighting thing to impress the queen.

I just looked up the quote on imdb, and indeed it is. I do remember him saying something about playing games and then Harman telling Kun Lan he's a bad player, but I somehow missed the specific word "chess".

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

It seems that with most of my PS2 games, I see faint horizontal bars moving from the bottom of the screen to the top, slowly. I never noticed this in the past, and I think I would have, as I'm pretty sensitive to stuff like that. The only thing that's changed since then is the new AC adapter, and the PS2 is the only system that has this problem. I guess I can ignore it. Maybe I'll try the system on a different TV later and see what happens.

Anyway, I actually played a little Gran Turismo 4 tonight. Upgraded my starting car so I can handle the $1,500 prize races.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea) I think I'm right before the boss of the third level of Killer7.

Is there any reason to not play through the game as Kevin Smith (not to be confused with the director of the same name) and only switch to someone else when you absolutely have to? It seems like I have much better aim with him and because he uses throwing knives, he never has to reload. And he's also the only character who doesn't repeat an annoying catchphrase every time he kills an enemy in one hit.

The boss fight of Chapter 2 was strange. You and a female assassin have a shootout. You can't be killed and neither can she, no matter how you shoot the crap outta each other. But a timer is counting down during the fight. When it's over, you're shown the number of times you hit her and the number of times she hit you. Whoever has the most hits wins. The weird thing is...the game makes you transform into Mask de Smith right before this. This fight seems impossible to win as him because he has to reload after EVERY shot. So I lost, and the next time I used Coyote Smith, and with him, it was impossible to lose. I more than doubled her score.

So...WTF?

I also think I somehow missed something in Stage 2. There was this area in the garden where I could see something with my scope, and I heard the guitar riff that indicates a secret is hidden there, but I could not figure out what to do with that. I ended up getting to the boss first.

I've been watching the Werid Al show.

Honestly, it's kind of irritating, but after I watch an episode I rewatch it with the commentary turned on, and I really can't blame Al or anyone who actually worked on it. The decision to cater the show to kids, as well as the network hammering education down everyone's throat really screwed it over. I've seen four episodes and it's gotten tolerable, but that first episode was really, really awful.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I've noticed a potentially fatal flaw in Killer7: There are far too many clues available for the mandatory puzzles. Sometimes there's some kind of visual clue, like a painting or poster, which is fine enough. But there's also always this guy standing there who basically spoils the puzzle if you talk to him. If that wasn't enough, you can shoot the mask he's holding (which costs some blood) to have it completely spelled out in no uncertain terms.

It's funny to me when I think about that "cutesy games are easy; mature games are hard" thing from the other forum because this is a game with an M rating and yet it seems like the developers didn't want to take any chances that it might stump or frustrate players.

I tried the PS2 on a different television, and I had the same problems with lines on the screen. I'm not sure what to do, besides ignoring it.

I've started watching Search for Spock tonight. I like how on the 360, when you start the system up with a DVD, it automatically goes to the part of the movie you left off on before, so you don't have to sit through the warnings and menus each time.

Was thinking about downloading Time Pilot for Live Arcade, but I'm not sure.

I aquired a couple games for Live Arcade today. The first was Time Pilot, as I mentioned I was considering. I had never even heard of it before, much less played it, but it seemed like it had potential to be a fun arcade game. The Live version has optional updated visuals and sound effects, the mandated achievement points, and online leaderboards. I've earned several achievements already, as most of them are simply about surviving from one level to the next.

I also decided to purchase Crystal Quest while I was at it. Just an impulse buy.

With my current number of achievement points, 2100, I'm ranked 224,787th in the world. LOL.

Time Pilot is on the Konami Arcade collection for Playstation.

Supposedly, the game's theme is time travel, but it doesn't seem to make much of an impact to me. The little planes you fight in each level look slightly different; that's the extent of it.

I'm not really wild about the game, although it's popular among some people that like old arcade games. Dire51 has it on his list.

FO would probably have recommended Gyruss over Time Pilot.

Re: ....

I was kind of wondering what the point of the game is. Why go back in time and assist in World War I and II if we already won them? Or is the point that without the Time Pilot's help, we would have lost those wars? It doesn't seem like he helped very much in Vietnam, though.

BTW, in case I haven't mentioned it, the Live Arcade library is still pretty small. Maybe 20 to 30 games, a mix of original content and old arcade games. So MAME would be a better choice if you're looking for some top tier games to play. But for something that you can play on your TV, with enhancements and points, Arcade can be worth a few bucks per game. The release rate has been about one title per week lately.

Well, if it's that few, then I'd greatly doubt if they had any arcade games we don't already have on some collection or another.

What arcade games don't we have that I might be interested?

I can't think of many. There are a few things that have never been released for home systems, or are pretty rare: Xexex, R-Type Leo, Dragon Saber, maybe. The original arcade Shinobi might be another.

Re: ....

I've done a little bit of them, and mostly thought they were lame. Like the one that led to the best weapons for the people you originally couldn't beat the game as, which was this long, boring slug through a brown cave with a ridiculous enemy encounter rate.

I got into an arguement with some guy who insisted that the the GBA version vastly superior to the SNES version despite the awful slowdown and battle glitches and inferior soundtrack because of these bonus dungeons and them fleshing out the characters more. First off, there wasn't even much fleshing out that I could tell, but he used Kain as an example and I never got to his section of the Lunar Ruins, because I got so sick of it all after Rosa's. Plus, he admitted nobody really needed to be fleshed out. Like the Phoenix Wright Episode 5 thing. "Nevermind it's pointless and may even ass up the plot! It's more stuff, and that's awesome!". He also said something about a superior translation, but I couldn't even tell that much difference. In fact, they took out those couple of lines between Cecil and Rydia about her mother after she rejoins them in the Underworld. Or did he mean "closer to the original Japanese, and because it was closer to the original Japanese, that automatically makes it better"? Speaking of Rydia, her section of the dungeon has an unforgivable plot hole; (spoiler) it says the reason Rydia grew up was because she gained control over those four monsters (Ramuh, Shiva, Ifrit, Titan). This guy's answer to that was "Well, that's what it was like in the original Japanese, duh!". So why didn't they take out that part about her aging because of how time flows in the Land of Monsters? And why doesn't she continue to age when you get more summons? And the Cecil section of that dungeon is so halfassed it's more of a self parody than any kind of character development.

Granted, this is the same guy who said Dawn of Sorrow was going to kick Symphony's ass and that thing about Shadow of the Colossus being a big open beautiful world for you to spend hours looking at, and that it was ugly on purpose.

I've never said this anywhere, but the only game on the Wii's Virtual Console (the Japanese name for that download service, but it'll probably carry over to America) that could possibly interest me is Y's Books I and II, since TurboDuos and the game and are so expensive.

Anyways, I did the Moon Base in Ratchet and Clank. I only died against Qwark once because of an asteroid that blended with the background, and I didn't see it until after I had crashed into it.

Minor Spoiler: You can so totally see Qwark's escape pod as he goes spiraling.

Then I went around to old planets and gathered Bolts both on the ground and with the Metal Detector until I could buy the Hyper Nanotech (which I would've been able to buy right after I finished the moon base, except I had to buy that gun where you guide the missiles, I forget its name).

Re: ....

Ys Book 1 and 2 shouldn't be expensive at all. I got a new copy 3 (or so?) years ago for $30.

Okay, it's more expensive than 97% of used NES games, but it's not too bad compared to most new games.

The Turbo Duo, on the other hand, is expensive. But you don't need a Duo to play it. I'm not sure if you'd save any money at all (I haven't looked into it), but it could be played on a Turbo Grafx with the CD attachment. That might not let you play other Turbo games (like Gate of Thunder or Dracula X) that require the Super CD 2 card, though.

Another option (which I also can't vouch for) is Magic Engine. It's a paid-for emulator. It does require a game's CD, I think (I'm not sure how it's supposed to work with HuCards, if at all).

I beat the third boss in Killer7. It's two "old men" demons with half their heads blown away from an earlier cutscene. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to beat them, since there's something very specific you have to do to make them vulnerable. I have no idea how you could possibly beat them without using Kaede Smith because she's the only one who has a sniper scope and I found it difficult to aim at the right spot even with that advantage.

I don't know why they bother putting sex scenes in games, other than just to have one. And just like the one in Omikron, the characters in this one are fully-clothed, so it doesn't even make sense. Then again, I'm not sure why any cinema scene in this game exists as it's still a bunch of random nonsense. And the dialogue is so silly. An old farmer on a tractor in Texas: "We don't get many...BLACKS around these parts!" And this game actually had the line "Tricks are for kids!"

I think I know why some gamers considered this game to be "art". It's for the same reason I think a lot of anime gets misinterpreted as "high art": The more nonsensical you make it, the more people are fooled into thinking they're seeing something "deep". And, of course, if you throw blood, sex, and swearing into the mix, it's "mature".

Re: ....

Quote: And this game actually had the line "Tricks are for kids!"

They actually use this line a lot, but change the word "tricks" into other things. I guess Suda51 must've been a fan of those commercials...but it also contains other cartoon cliche dialogue, like the ever-so-famous, "Say your prayers!" Has anyone IRL ever actually said that before killing someone?

Anyway, I beat the fifth boss. She's this anime chick that runs around a parking lot and is extremely difficult to hit. I got her on my second try, and then I beat her in the rematch on the next stage. I'm almost up to the sixth stage boss, but I'm stuck on a room with a Laser Smile demon. You have to kill him almost as soon as you enter the room, or he kills you with one shot.

I can give this game credit for one thing - it does seem to cleverly parody some anime conventions. The "anime chick" boss, for example, has a battle intro that clearly parodies the stock animation used in shows like Sailor Moon. Her face is drawn in that generic big-eyed style, but it's so exaggerated, it's downright frightening. It's made even moreso by the fact that none of her facial features move at all (although it's later revealed that the reason for this is that it's a mask, but it still seems an obvious parody of the fact that those stock animation sequences often don't have much "animation" at all.)

Another part of the game parodied that "L/R" discrepancy. I've actually gotten into debates about this. I've seen people say that when SNK says "Victoly" instead of "Victory", it's not a misspelling because L and R are the same in Japan. I'm sorry. In America, it's a misspelling. And in the case of names, you have to eventually pick one and go with it. A Flying Omelette and Frying Omelette are two different things. (And if L and R are the same in Japan, how do they distinguish the shoulder buttons on game controllers that have them? :\ )

Ironically, though, even though the game parodies some anime conventions, it adheres to others. I've already mentioned how the story is as weird and convoluted as possible to appear "deep". Another is that it has it's own anime cutscenes, but they try to keep it close to the style of the rest of the game. The result is that the animation is rigid and sometimes it looks like there are only about three colors at the most on the screen. The parts of the characters that move when they talk look as though they're connected to the rest of their bodies by balljoints because of the strange way they jerk around. And peoples' hands look weird. I don't draw hands very well, myself, but c'mon, these are professionals! Really, it's all rather ugly...

One reason I believe people sometimes like to make their stories "mysterious" is that they think it will keep the audience enrapt, waiting to see what the explanation is for everything. The reality is that if you keep dragging your audience around for too long, they eventually stop wondering or caring about what's going on. It leads to boredom, the exact opposite effect. Omikron actually handled this type of situation a lot better, which is really saying something considering how goofy that game was, too. There is a mystery at the beginning. It's not really clear what's going on, what really happened to Officer Kay'l, and what your purpose is there. But after solving a somewhat-lengthy sequence of puzzles, you arrive at a cutscene that explains everything. The pieces of the mystery now fall into place - what didn't make sense before suddenly does. The difference in Omikron is that this happens at the end of the first area, only about 1/4 of the way into the game. And although many developments are yet to come, at least you now know what you're up against and what you're fighting for.

There is one thing that I do think is kind of cool about the game and that is that Harman and the Killer7 are mostly adults (Con is the only exception, I think he's a teenager). Harman especially, since he's an old dude in a wheelchair, which may not seem a plausible situation for an assassin, but at least it's the first time I can recall playing as a guy in a wheelchair in a game. (And it doesn't seem contrived as it did on Extreme Ghostbusters.) But I can just imagine that if lesser minds had control of the project, they might have wanted some bullshit scenario where you control a team of Teenage Assassins who save the world, which is what a lot of modern RPGs are like.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I got a few minutes of Might and Magic in today. I mapped a bit more of D-1; in fact, I only have about a quarter of it left.

I left off on that tonight because I had run out of food. I think I've found the maximum amount of food you can carry.

You're "supposed" to only be able to carry 40 pieces of food: If you have any amount less than that, then buying some for a character will take his total up to 40. Conversely, if you have 40 or more pieces, you won't be able to buy more.

The trick is to camp and share your food, setting one character's ratio to 1, and the rest to 3. So, if everyone previously had 40 pieces of food, you'd have 240 altogether, and after sharing, the one character would have 15 pieces of food, and the others 45.

Then the character with 15 pieces of food could buy more, bringing him up to 40, and share again, and then continue the cycle.

Well, the cycle has to come to a stop sometime, and it ended ealier than I would have thought. When one character has 31, and the rest have 91, you can buy more food, so you'll be at 40 and 91. But then if you share, it goes back to 31 and 91; the extra food is just lost, not distributed. So, that indicates the maximum.

After all this boring stuff about food that no one has probably read, I can safely put a spoiler.

I did something possibly significant in D1 -- I found a scorpion boss and beat it. It was easy, really: I think two physical attacks (one each from my knights) got it. And the rest of the enemy party was defeated or fled by the end of the first round.

FO told me that a boss's maximum hp is 255, which is sort of interesting. That means that any one should be able to be beat in two hits by me, even now. I guess that explains why they have to be so fast; otherwise, they might not be a challenge.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

That list actually does include demo versions. I tried out Street Fighter 2 and Frogger, but haven't purchased them yet. Frogger has never appealed to me a whole lot, but I'll probably get it eventually. SF2 though... it has online play, but since I'm not a subscriber, I can't use that. And having never played the game before, there's no nostalgic appeal. It's also a tad more expensive than the other classic arcade titles.

Other games I've tried but don't own include Marble Blast Ultra (probably won't buy it), Astropop (some chance of buying it), Smash TV (don't want it), Robotron (will probably buy that), and Cloning Clyde (don't want it).

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I just played a little more of Prey. I paid a lot for that game and didn't want it to start collecting dust on a shelf. I finished Chapter 7. I spent some time in this weird area where you follow these walkways that go all over this large room. They're basically gravity generating pathways, so you can follow them up walls, onto the ceiling, etc. If you jump or walk off, you fall back down, affected by normal gravity. As you might imagine, all this wall and ceiling walking is insanely disorienting and trying to figure out where to go was difficult. I tried standing on normal ground to see if I could figure out anything from that perspective, but basically found the exit just by wandering around.

After that room, there were some enemies to fight, nothing too interesting. As I've mentioned, when you die in this game, you end up in basically a mini-game where you have to shoot red and blue thingies to earn health and spirit points. It's odd though. What it feels like is playing a normal FPS, dying, then having to play some duck hunt to earn your right to live again. It's nice not having to save all the time, which I also think I've mentioned before, but being immortal is no fun.

I think having you lose a few minutes of gameplay and restricting saves would be optimal.

I read a bit tonight.

I also just finished off mapping the town of Dusk, and D1. I didn't find anything notable in their remainders. However, since they're finished, I did decide to scan their maps and add them to the map thread, as well as a few other finished maps.

I'm not sure if I should have added P PEEK 4 yet. I still haven't beaten that one party. I don't know if they'll give anything important that I'll have to add to the map later... Well, there's nothing to do but wait and see.

I went back through my maps to find ones that were part way finished, and the one I decided to work on was Quivering Forest. It's much, much easier to map now that I have Warp magic. I have about 3/4 of it mapped; mostly all that's left is the southwest corner.

I beat the sixth boss of Killer7 and I'm now at Disk 2. It was another "gimmicky" fight where you have to shoot your opponent when a pigeon flies off his arm. But sometimes the pigeon starts to fly away but doesn't, and one time I jumped the gun at that and he got a hit in on me. Otherwise, it was pretty easy.

Two more chapters in Prey complete. One was just a couple minutes of dialogue, but if the game calls it a chapter, who am I to argue?

I fought the game's first boss, but I basically just fumbled through it. I couldn't tell what it's weak point, if any, was, so I aimed for the head. I must've died 10 times and had to play that stupid mini-game each time. Eventually, I got a new weapon and used that to finish off the boss. Then there was some pretty normal (for this game) FPS action. Those creepy ghost children were fighting me again at one point, though. Apparently even ghosts don't like getting grenades thrown at them.

Finished one more chapter of Prey, easily the best in the game so far. One reason... flying vehicular combat. The ships I found control just like the flying ships in Halo did, and it was a blast flying around in them, fighting other ships and enemies on the ground. I hope they make a return later on. Now I'm on chapter 11 of (I think) 21.

Might and Magic:

I still wasn't able to beat the chaotic/black knight party in perilous peak 4.

I decided to go back to Alamar, despite my recent game over there. I took a different path. The path I got a game over on last time was one where you'd be attacked every step. The castle has some symmetry, so I was on a similar path just a few minutes ago.

The very last enemy party on the path had an arch incubus. It hit Sonya and turned her to ash -- instant eradication. That wasn't too good. Not only could she not contribute to the battle, she also didn't get experience at the end (if a character just faints during a battle, I'm not sure if they get experience or not, but I'm inclined to guess that they might). However, I managed to beat the party (that arch incubus was without peer in that party, and even he went down in a hit or two), and was even able to revive Sonya with a Life 2 spell. When I checked the treasure chest left behind, it was trapped and went off, killing Rigel. I couldn't bring him back with life 1 or 2, but camping cured him.

After that, I rescued another prisoner!

That was enough for one night. I went back to Sorpigal to save my progress and experience.

Many of my characters are close to leveling up. I might get them that extra level, and then go after that other branch in Alamar the next time I play.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

Well, I made it to the next chapter of Killer7. You had to beat a series of bosses that are spoofs of the Power Rangers. Although I thought some of the earlier parodies of anime were kind of amusing, this one was just lame. Maybe it wouldn't be if parodying the Power Rangers wasn't such old hat by now, but c'mon, it was done as far back as Super Mario RPG, and it was also done in SaGa Frontier and Disgaea.

Anyway, each member of the Killer7 (though there's technically 8 if you count Harman, and he is used here), squares off against a ranger, mano-a-mano. Some fights were very easily won. Others I couldn't win no matter how fast I shot them. At first I thought that some were rigged so that you'd lose in order for there to be a tie-breaker fight at the end. However, the last one, between Garcian and the Pink Ranger, wasn't even a battle. It just went to a cutscene between them. So now I wonder if I had to do something in particular to win the fights I lost - I probably had to use the characters' special abilities...

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

Slow day on the forums, apparently. No new posts since I posted at 4. Oh well, people have things to do, places to be, while Prey is all I've got.

I finished another chapter, and there was indeed some more flying around, though it was a little more puzzle oriented this time. There was a lot of pretty unremarkable FPS gameplay. I was expecting for some of the levels to be a little more mind bending in terms of messing around with gravity and the portals. I seem to be very low or out of ammo for most of my weapons except for the standard low to average power gun I've used for most of the game.

After that chapter was finished, I fired up Pacman and cleared stage 15. I wasn't enjoying it, just trying to work towards the achievement you get for clearing stage 21. The game saves after each stage you complete.

Next, I started up Galaga and the same thing. I reached stage 20 and earned two achievements in the process (the reaching level 20 and encountering a particular type of enemy for the first time).

In Time Pilot, I now have all the achievements except for the one where you have to reach 2001 without losing a life.

Oh, I'm not having a lot of fun. I didn't play a game at all today. I went to work to get a few things done, though I didn't stay a full day (it was pretty empty, but I did see my boss).

I did decide to take the plunge and picked up a laptop computer today.

I spent a little bit of time trying to set up the wireless network. I couldn't get it to work, though. I sent an email to HP about it.

One fun thing we DID do today was have a cookout, followed by a nice walk.

For most of the night after that, I've been trying to get the new computer up to speed, and then worked on a presentation for tomorrow. I'm still not done with that.

I've wanted a laptop for a long time, and have considered buying one when upgrading to a new system. But I don't think I could ever go without a desktop altogether.

Today's my day off, and I finished Chapter 12 of Prey. It was moderately fun but again, there's not too much worth commenting on. There was some gravity changing but nothing that really made you think. I fought lots more regular enemies, and also some flying robots that look like they're from The Matrix. I did get a new weapon, some kind of acid gun that seems to work like a shotgun in a normal game. I haven't messed with it much because I don't know how common the ammo for it is.

Re: ....

Well, I guess I could put this in the "post here when you spend money on merchandise" thread, but since I already mentioned it...

I pretty much got the 2nd cheapest laptop available at circuit city. It seems okay. It has a DVD and CD writer, wireless networking, and several USB ports.

I also got a free laptop case, and scanner/printer (we actually previously did not have a printer). Since they were free, I just said "what the hell" and got them, too, without even really considering it or looking at them. Well, they're free with rebate. I'll have to remember to fill those out tonight, and send them off.

Last night I put together a powerpoint presentation on it, and today I used it to present it. Both went well. It might even be easier to use this laptop with the projector than some others, because as soon as I hooked the projector up, it started outputting to it. For some other laptops, you have to command it to output. It's not like that's tricky, but anyway, it is more convenient.

I'm having to get the settings the way I like them. It uses some huge resolution, like 1200 by 800 or something, and I'm used to 800 by 600. 1200 by 800 sure looks pretty, but everything is so small it started to give me a head- and eye-ache after awhile. I tried switching to 800x600, but everything was blocky and blurry, and it just looked like crap. So did everything but the highest resolution. Then I noticed it's possible to keep the resolution, but change the DPI setting to make things bigger, so I did that.

I also had to change the virtual mouse's wheel settings, because they were pissing me off.

I might put some of FO's music on here...

Ha! I got the wireless network to work! I'm posting now from the laptop.

It seems that I had to set up an ad hoc, computer-to-computer network. (Also, FO found our little wireless antenna for the HP)

Then I had to go through some stuff to share the internet connection.

I will need to set up network security next. One guide I found for setting up a network recommends doing that last, because of any problems that could exist with simply connecting to begin with.

Maybe eventually I will, but right now I just don't feel like it. All I can say is that it is pretty ridiculous and it's not really worth trying to make sense of any of it because of all the nonsense and contradictions in the plot.

I did try out the game on Killer8 mode. Killer8 mode adds a younger version of Harman Smith (that's not bound to a wheelchair) to your playable character roster and it makes the enemies' weakpoints invisible to your scanner.

Uh...well, I actually did get a Game Over for the first time, but this mode seems like it totally sucks. Not being able to see the enemies' weak points can be dealt with in one of two ways:

1. You can "test" all the areas of its body where a weak point would normally be. If you get lucky, you'll kill it instantly.

2. You can just shoot the monster anywhere and keep shooting it until it dies.

The problem with #1 is that you only have a small window before the enemy reaches you and explodes.

The problem with #2 is that killing them this way means you'll never get any blood collected from them (only instant kills give you blood), and without blood you can't level up your characters and can't use special attacks.

It just seems tedious to fight enemies over and over again in hopes of nailing the weak spot so that you can collect blood and level up...

Finished chapters 13 and 14 of Prey. Straightforward, moderately enjoyable FPS gameplay. I guess they came up with some cool concepts but either didn't have the time, the money, or motivation to do much with them... aside from some quirky areas here and there, mostly at the start of the game.

I was earlier afraid that the game would turn out to be comparable to Doom 3 in length... catastrophically so. But despite the large number of chapters, they go by pretty fast. Unless a puzzle or something trips me up, I can easily clear a chapter in a short playing session. Lately, I've frequently been doing two at a time.

Re: ....

Finished chapters 15 and 16 today. These were a little more complicated than a lot of what's come before. Lots of more challenging enemies, including these flying, rocket launching ones. And more challenges, like being inside of a cube, and having to rotate it around from the inside to solve the (simple once you get it) puzzle and escape. There's one where there's a forcefield, but it doesn't extend all the way to the ceiling. So you reverse gravity, push a block through the opening, then when gravity is restored, the block is past the forcefield and you can jump on it to get to the next area.

I noticed that when you die, it's harder to hit the things to restore your health, but not that hard. And the worst you can do is be revived at half health anyway, so it's all pretty irrelevant.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I've reached the second to last chapter of Prey. It's not a story heavy game and the plot is absolutely ridiculous (Cherokee kidnapped by aliens has special powers and has to find is girlfriend and save the world), but it's had me a little interested just the same. The last boss, at least I assume she is, speaks to you sometimes as you progress through the levels, making it sound like you've only survived this long because you amuse her and because she wants you to join their side.

Anyway, on a recent visit to the spirit world, the main character's grandfather's spirit says that I'll have to undergo seven trials, one for each tribe or something to that effect, in order to be powerful enough to defeat the enemy.

But as you head into the spirit cave to do them, you basically get interrupted by an attack on the spirit world and told nevermind the trials. Either they ran out of time to implement them, which I assume is the case. Or they thought it would be cool to tell you you're doing something and then surprise you with something else. That doesn't feel right because what you end up doing instead of the trials (fighting a bunch of enemies you've seen before for a total of 5 minutes) is quite underwhelming.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I finished Prey!

It's nice to actually play through an entire game again.

The rest of the game was basically constant fighting, almost no puzzles of any sort. The last boss was very easy. It has a shield that makes it invulnerable. So you have to launch these things into the air, and when she gets close, you blow those things up to take her shield down for about 8 seconds. During which time you attack with your strongest weapons. Repeat as needed.

After the credits, there was a playable ending that makes it quite clear that Prey 2 is on the way.

Eh, I wonder what "most" people means? I've heard a couple of people say the first one was harder, but one hadn't even beaten the game when that claim was made. I've heard plenty of people say the opposite.

I certainly don't think the first Castlevania is harder. In the first game, the first time I played, I made it to the Grim Reaper in about an hour, and the final boss in maybe two hours. It was mostly just the final boss that I thought was particularly challenging.

To go into a little more detail on that subject, there are some opinions that are widely held at certain communities, but by no means all, but if you only go to those communities, you can get a misleading picture of how accepted those views are.

For instance:

At Loogaroo's board, it might be widely accepted that Metroid has terrible play control. This is not a view I've seen anywhere else (nor do I personally understand it).

At the new Nsider, it seems quite common to hear that Duck Hunt is the best NES game. I think in communities with more mature NES fans, that opinion is rather laughable.

Among all the reviews that I've read about Castlevania III, most of them say that it is easier than the first game. I'm glad someone else agrees with me, though.

I haven't finished CVIII yet, so my opinion may not be as valid as someone who has. But still - I never had this much trouble playing through the first game.

I never had an issue with Metroid's control, either.

No problem.

Quote: As always, your site is still one of the best after all these years.

Thanks!

I've just be scrapbooking lately, but I might try Killer8 mode of Killer7 again soon. I wonder if it'll be like some RPGs in which it's only going to seem really hard at first, but once you gain a few levels, things get easier. One thing that worried me is that later in the game there are some enemies that you have to hit in the weak spot or else they never die (the Poison Smiles are one type, and the type in the armor might be another.) If I wasn't able to hit the weak spot in time, they'd inevitably reach me and explode...but leveling up and getting the Stamina Ring might decrease the amount of damage you take from them, so I might be able to afford a few sacrifice hits.

Incidentally, I've also been reading a FAQ that explains the game's plot. Unfortunately, the story is more interesting (interesting...though not necessarily good) in explanation than it is in the way it's executed in the game. I seemed to have missed a very important plot detail, though, and I think that's part of what led to the conclusion seeming like a bunch of random, made-up-as-it-went-along crap. I don't know how I could have possibly missed that detail, though, since I spent more time combing through the area of the game where it should be more than any other area (it was the only area that had a puzzle that stumped me for a little while.)

This is a spoiler, so highlight to read:

I don't think there's any way on earth possible to understand the story until you realize that there are actually two different Harman Smiths.

Regardless of explanations, there are still some problems with the story's execution. Crawl once said something about the movie Adaptation that they needed to structure it in such a way that it doesn't seem like a bunch of random crap. That's how I feel about Killer7. For example, there are all these revelations about Garcian Smith in the last few chapters of the game. Problem is...were we supposed to be wondering about a mystery behind this character up until this point? He shows up between chapters to take on assignments, and he cleans up and resurrects the bodies of your characters when you die. That's it. Cinema-wise, there's more involving Dan Smith than Garcian, and the game gives two different accounts of his death.

How old is Con supposed to be again? The manual says he's into war heroes. Any kid old enough to be into war heroes is beyond the point of getting excited about seeing the Power Rangers. And Con is a professional assassin who fights demons. How could a fictitious group like the Power Rangers impress him after all he's seen and done himself?

I also seem to have a different intepretation of Iwazaru's true identity than the FAQ writer, but I suppose mine might not make sense since the character he's supposed to be got killed earlier. But then again, mine makes as much sense considering that Dan Smith appears to have been killed two different ways and that the character that Iwazaru is resurrects himself at least one other time.

I made it back to Ratchet's planet (they needed to coordinates for this why?), but after dying against those mobs of flying hitmen ten+ times I called it a night. That's a case of "Getting shot at from off screen DOES exist in 3D games, whoever wrote that Abe's Oddysee review" if I've ever seen one.

A reason they might need the coordinates for his planet could be because the planet was moved to where the new artificial planet will be.

As for getting shot off screen (minor spoiler) don't forget that YOU can shoot THEM from offscreen, too...

Something cool happened. I got Enchanted Arms today, and I found out that it includes a 48 page graphic novel. Apparently, not all copies of the game come with it. Some people who said they preordered didn't get it, and I just bought mine normally and got it.

I finally finished Castlevania III. Dracula took me at least 30 tries to beat. The problem wasn't so much Dracula, but rather the final stage. I kept losing so much energy that by the time I finally got to Drac, I had only one hit to spare.

I started Enchanted Arms. Didn't really do much yet, just a battle tutorial and talking to a few people. The text size for some things is pretty small. That's apparently true of a lot of XB360 games played on a standard TV. There was an interview question about that in EGM, for a different game, where the EGM guy asked why the text couldn't be a little bigger. And the guy just laughed it off, saying that every XB360 owner should have an HD-TV. Jerk. It's interesting that the game does seem to be widescreen, though.

Hasn't received any press that I know of, but the game has an openly gay character who seems like he'll be one of the main party members.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I finally did get some time in Might and Magic tonight.

I went back to King Alamar's castle, and have mapped perhaps half of it.

I wasn't able to have an audience with the king. A guard in front of the door says I need the King's Pass. I wonder if it's possible to Warp around that, though. I haven't tried it yet, and I'm not sure if I will.

I had gotten in some fights with pretty powerful enemies, so I wanted to save before finishing mapping.

When I went back to Sorpigal, not only did EVERY one of my characters gain a level, Crawl and Vyrana each gained two! That might be a first for me.

I still haven't had a character do 255 damage, but once 254 was dealt.

Star Fox: Command - I've unlocked two of the endings.

This is an interesting game, but it takes a lot of getting used to. The arwing (or whatever it is you end up controlling) is controlled with the stylus and every other button is used to fire. It was a bit of an off-putting way to control things, but I eventually got used to it.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

It seems my characters' levels are growing very quickly. Crawl is now up to level 29. He gained at least three, maybe more, levels tonight alone.

Even though Azalea is about 9 levels behind Lylac, she's not that far behind in max hp. She has about 94 max hp, and Lylac has about 114.

Also, Azalea is now doing about 64 points of damage per attack.

To be honest, as a consequence of dropping my robber, I do frequently set off traps when checking treasure chests (maybe as much as half the time). But I really don't care. I only wish I would have dropped that guy sooner.

I finished mapping all of Alamar that I can for now. I did find one of the messages. I mentioned above that I didn't know if I'd try to warp past the guard in that castle. Well, it's not possible: On the squares adjoining the king's room, you're not allowed to use magic at all, let alone Warp.

I finished mapping Korin Bluffs. The last thing to find was the Warp to Doom Castle. I mapped a little bit of that, but was wiped out by an enemy party with Two Titans. They moved so quickly that I didn't even get it a turn, but it took them something like 4 or more turns to kill me.

I also retried that battle in P PEEK 4, which also has Titans, and got another Game Over there, too.

There's not much left in my old maps that now needs to be filled in. What I'll probably do next is either explore the overworld some more, or go back to Dragadune's third basement.

I think I'm done for the night now, at any rate.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I beat Ratchet and Clank.

I think it took me four or five tries to beat the final boss. Spoiler tactic:

In the first phase, I used that rapid-fire handheld gun. The second onward, I beat him by sucking up the spike balls (or attack robots for the third), then firing them at him when he lobbed those fire-wave bombs. Took a while, but better than running out of ammo since the ammo crates only seem to respawn every other attempt, and the Telsa Claw broke me so I didn't have money to buy more. In the final phase, sometimes he didn't send out spikes balls or robots in between fire-waves, in which case I plugged him with the Devestator. At the end when all hell broke lose, I went all out with the Telsa Claw on him.

Unfortunately, I think I may have lost my game progress posts for when I first beat Ratchet and Clank. I'm pretty sure I didn't use the vacuum weapon, though. I remember when I ran out of money I had to reload a save where I had more money, so I could buy more ammo.

I'm mapping the 3rd basement of Dragadune. It's a bit of a pain, with a lot of open spaces, a lot of barriers, and a lot of "Poof!" points that warp you to other locations on the floor. But I'm making progress. And so far it seems like I'm capable of dealing with the enemies there. I did have a bit of a scare when I fought a party with a Great Incubus, and Storm Giants. The Great Incubus instant-killed Sonya, and every enemy in the party had over 100 hit points. But I killed the Great Incubus with one hit with Crawl, and Rigel's Prism spell worked correctly, and was able to kill a bunch of the giants.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

Wow. I just finished up Dragadune (and hence will be adding it to the map thread). It was a major experience.

I mentioned how the level has open spaces, and warps, and barriers. The thing would really be a pain in the ass to have completed without the warp spell. But aside from all of that, you really have to exhaustively explore it. And you might be apprehensive about exploring exhaustively, because most squares that seem likely to hold something interesting are also squares that are likely to simply warp you. There's one important square (where you meet the cleric of the south) and it turns out to have been the second to last square I filled in! I think that might be the game's revenge for me having found the guy so quickly in the maze in Dusk.

(More detailed spoilers)

But finding a needle in a haystack isn't the only reason you'll have to explore so much in that dungeon! Once I finally reached the cleric of the south, he told me to hear all three tones and return.

Also on the third floor of the dungeon are rooms with gongs. If you hit the gong, you'll hear a tone and be teleported.

Now, last year, when I first played this game, I had entered this dungeon before, and found one gong. I found every other one on this trip. And yet I had only heard two gongs! One (the annoying one) was heard only once, the other (the resounding tone) every other time.

So, I went back to the one I had found last year, and ... nope! It was the resounding one, too!

So, apparently, the tones are random, and some are more rare than others. I decided to go after them again in the same order that I first found them. It turns out when I went back to "O" on my map, I did hear the other tone (the mellow one).

I was in that dungeon for so long that when I finally warped back to Sorpigal, EVERY character gained two levels! And after gaining those two levels, Vyrana was just about 3,800 from gaining a third!

I also went through my inventory, and found that I had somehow gotten the Ultimate Sword. I found a few other things which might be worth equiping.

As for the game, my strategies are getting a little more complicated in the way that they do for Final Fantasy.

The thing about this game as compared to Final Fantasy, though, is that the battle order is always the same -- at least until you do something like change equipment or party members, which might be a long time. So, there's a much greater degree of predictability than in FF.

However, there are still things I've been experimenting with. I mentioned that I had been using Sword pretty much mindlessly, because it's the highest level attack spell that always works (Meteor can't be used indoors, and Prism often doesn't damage or only paralyzes enemies)

However, Sword right only only does about 28 damage. Fire and Bolt, though lower level spells, can do about 60! (So, why is Sword higher level? Because Fire and Bolt can only attack one row -- and if it's the back row, they might not even hit every enemy in that row -- while Sword attacks every single enemy)

So, what I've been thinking about doing is, have Lylac (who's been getting the second turn) use Fire on the back row, and then also have Rigel use Fire on the back row. That occasionally has more success at wiping out back row enemies.

I'm not really getting at the complexities here. It'd take too long. There are still issues of

1) Should Lylac use physical attacks, or soften up a group with magic?
2) Sword or Fire?
3) Azalea also could use physical attacks or magic.
4) If I would use the "Fire" strategy to take out the back row, should I use my old strategy (I haven't used it lately) of having my knights defend, to keep the front row clogged with weak enemies?

And of course, even though MY battle line up is the same every time, these considerations can vary with enemy party, to create dizzying permutations.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I've given the Killer8 mode of Killer7 another shot. Right now, I'm just trying to build my character levels by fighting the enemies that the first egglayer drops out over and over again. As long as I don't kill the egglayer, I can do this infinitely. I think I'll just keep doing this until the blood doctor's machine shuts down (this game's version of a "level cap per chapter").

At first, I used Harman Smith for this since his Tommy Gun can fire rapidly and can fire quite a few rounds before he needs to reload. But it's very hard to get critical hits with him and those give you the most blood. You get 2 blood points for knocking off a monster's limb or head, and 6 for hitting it in the weak spot (critical). So once I killed enough monsters to wake up Kevin, I switched to him instead. Kevin never has to reload and it's much easier to aim with him. Plus, the Tommy Gun is so powerful, you can only take off one limb before the rest of your shots kill the monster completely. Kevin can take off up to three limbs because his throwing knives aren't as powerful as the Tommy Gun.

It doesn't seem like you can level up Harman. I wonder if that means he'll become completely useless later on?

I'm concentrating on leveling up only Dan right now. I have a feeling Dan will prove to be one of the most useful because of his Collateral Shot. I'll eventually need to level up Kaede because her sniper scope is useful, and Kevin because the fact that he never reloads and is easy to aim with is useful, too.

Con, Mask, and Coyote - I may not worry about leveling them up as much for right now. Whenever I need to use them, I tend to just use them for that particular task that requires them, and then switch back to either Kevin or Dan. Con is rather weak and useless. Mask has to reload after every shot and his shots completely blow up the monsters, and you can't get blood from them that way. And Coyote is basically another Dan, but he holds his gun at such a weird angle I sometimes find it hard to aim with him.

Garcian, like Harman, can't be leveled up.

I finished mapping E1. I almost added it to the map thread, but I don't think I should yet. I just gave it another look, and rediscovered that that's the grid that has the Scales of Judgement, for which I need to find prisoners. So, I should finish rescuing them, and find out whatever happens next, before scanning that.

I only need to rescue one more prisoner, anyway! The one from Doom castle. Since I've gained at least 5 levels since my last attempt, I might try that castle again tomorrow.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

FO mentioned to me IRL that she didn't know what the rows and columns in the magic square added up to, so she couldn't solve it herself. It's possible to figure that number out, though, and I'll explain how now.

(Spoiler!)

All the rows have to add up the same number, x. All the rows together add up to 4x. But all the rows added up are just all of the individual numbers in the magic square added together, that is, 1 + 2 + 3 + ... + 15 + 16.

You could just add those numbers up, but the faster way is to use Gauss's childhood observation:

The numbers taken in pairs (16 and 1, 15 and 2, 14 and 3...) add up to 17. And there's 16/2 = 8 pairs. So, the numbers 1 to 16 added up equals 17 * 8 = 136.

And the number the rows (and columns, and everything else) adds up to has to be 136 / 4 = 34.

Solving the magic square the rest of the way isn't too hard. The top and bottom row are both missing 5, and only two pairs of numbers (1 and 4, 2 and 3) make 5.

The 10 and 11 row needs 13. Two pairs could make that: 5 and 8, and 6 and 7.

This means the 9 (the only number that wasn't in either of those pairs) MUST be on the 12 row.

The 9 can't be in the in 10 and 15, nor the 11 and 14 columns. Because then those 3 numbers together would already be 34. So the 9 must be in the 12 row, 16 column.

Anyway, more reasoning, or just trial and error, will solve it from here.

Re: Game Progress Topic 64 (Sounds like a game idea)

I did give Crawl the Ultimate Sword. With it, I've finally dealt 255 damage. In fact, doing that much damage is becoming a regular thing.

I didn't give Sonya the speed sword, because it decreased her Might too much. She had some special named sword -- like the Thunder Hammer -- but I had gotten a Great Hammer +3, and it turns out that that boosted her stats.

I gave Lylac the Speed Sword. Even though I don't usually have her directly attack, since she's an archer, it nevertheless boosted her speed, so it's still a help.

I beat Kirby's Adventure this year. I wasn't really impressed with it.

Anyway, while exploring the overworld in Might and Magic, I found the volcano. I've only mapped a fraction of it, but I found the volcano giant, and answered his riddle.

Thank goodness I'm taking detailed notes on this game, because otherwise I wouldn't have been able to answer it. (Though I might have at least had an idea of what to do to go back and get the answer). Though Nintendo Power had in days of old recommended writing everything down when playing an RPG, I never bothered until now... mainly because I never knew I'd need to bother.

On the other hand, there was one earlier clue for a different puzzle in the volcano, and I didn't see the connection between the two. However, by using trial and error I was able to get the first symbol in a code. After that, and also going back through my notes, I saw the connection, and got the other symbol right away. But I probably could have used trial and error for both parts.

I beat Majora's Mask on an N64 Emulator, which was surprisingly competent. There were some rare, quick moments when the gameplay got choppy, and there was a minor graphical glitch in the menus, but otherwise it played nicely.

I've got a nearly complete game going, but I'm missing two masks (one of which I know is the fierce deity mask, because I remember that you have to have all the other masks to obtain it) and I'm still stuck with the first bomb bag. I'm guessing that obtaining the mask I'm missing and getting the next bomb bag are somehow correlated.

I just now remembered that I probably did not get the ability to hold 1,000 rupees in that game. So, the last mask was probably related to that. If the largest bomb bag required that many rupees, maybe I didn't get it after all.

EDIT - I went through some of my MM game progress posts, and remembered a little more.

According to the posts, I DID get the largest bomb bag.

However, the one mask I was missing was one that you simply buy from the curiosity shop, but it does cost more money than you can hold unless you get the other increase.

I think the reason I never got that rupee increase was because I never figured out how to get the last gold skulltula in one of the houses.

Okay, I hate to admit it, but I cracked and looked up an FAQ (actually it's maybe the third time I did so, the last two or three heart pieces I was missing were pretty obscure). Turns out I was missing was the Stone Mask, and that I unknowingly set in motion the course of events leading to the larger bomb bag, but glazed over actually obtaining it.

Fighting Majora's Mask in the fierce diety form is of course a total joke, so I'm glad I finished the game without it once. It wasn't a great battle anyway (I think the first Zelda final boss I've finished for the first time without any potions), but I did have a little fun with it.

I'm almost completely finished mapping the Volcano.

There's no reason to map it so thoroughly: I found what important thing was there very quickly. Most of the rest of the maze doesn't serve much purpose (I suppose the purpose could be "to be confusing", but it's not hard, even your first time through, to cut through most of it).

Aside from the main thing in the maze, there were two other clues. One was a redundant one for solving the volcano; the other's purpose I'm not yet aware of.

There're a lot of warp points on the map, but it's fairly easy to map because there are so few random (or even planned) encounters. And I'm using the warp spell liberally.

It's harder to estimate how much that might be off by. Maybe a lot.

As for how far I'm into the game, well, there are 20 overworld grids. I'm pretty much completely done with 9, and am perhaps half way done with, let's say, 6 more.

That would mean I'm about 60% done. That might be low, but I know I'm not into the end game yet.
