Game Progress Topic #65

It was getting a little long, and I'm already a bit behind on these.

I haven't really had the chance to do any gaming the last few days. If I had something that required a little less thought, maybe, but I'm too mentally drained to work on an RPG. I figure that tomorrow night or Wednesday I'll make my first real progress on Enchanted Arms. I might also download Scramble for Live Arcade, but I'm not certain yet.

I watched the premieres of The Simpsons and Family guy. Simpsons was watchable, but not great. I have been getting in to the show again watching recent seasons in reruns. Some time away from it has done wonders. Family Guy I thought was really good. I think South Park starts up again in about a month. These are going to be the only TV I watch, probably.

Ahem.

I'm buying Megaman ZX tommorrow. Or the next day. Whenever its out. I have to do something until next week, when SENGOKU MUSOU 2 comes out. And Megaman games don't last that long, so it seems like a prime candidate for my filler time.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

I leveled up Dan some more in Killer8, and just for the heck of it, I let a Heaven Smile blow up on him to see if he'd still die in one hit.

He did. I then realized after checking the stats that you can't actually increase your characters' defense. Only their attack power. So it's important right now for me to make him as strong as possible so that he'll take out the enemies in fewer hits before they can reach him. I also need to level him up enough to get the "critical lock-on" so that he'll automatically lock onto enemy weak points without me being able to see them.

But that defense power is a weird issue and I noticed that the first time I played through the game on Normal. It seems like when you first meet a new type of Heaven Smile, it can kill you instantly. But then when you come across them in later chapters, they only take off some of your life meter. A good example of that is the Laser Smiles. When you first meet one in that hallway in the Encounter chapter, it can kill you with one laser hit. But the ones you meet in the next chapter, Alter Ego, only do a little bit of damage.

I don't know why this is...you MUST get some sort of defense increase between chapters, even if the status for it is not visible.

I finished off B3 and added it to the map thread.

I was so liberal with using Warp (and other spells) that likely the first thing I'll need to do the next time I play is make another visit to trivia island to restock on gems.

I started a New Game+ on Ratchet and Clank, and I'm already back up to beating the first hoverboard race. I went back to Aridia to beat up Karma... er, talk to Skid's agent, but quit after making that selection because I have a throbbing headache.

I have about 50,000 bolts, 1/3 of what I need for the RYNO.

After all these years I've decided that I want to finally try to finish Earthbound, but I started over instead of picking up my file from many years ago because I've forgotten mostly everything about the game by now.

I've just made it to Threed and this is where I remember feeling like I ran into a brick wall. Both because I didn't know what to do and because the enemies here are really tough, like those ghost in the garbage cans that you can barely damage. And I keep getting possessed, too, and that stupid little possession ghost makes me freeze up in battle, missing turns.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

I watched House for the first time tonight and found it quite interesting. I'm going to try to catch it regularly from now on.

Earlier, I played some Enchanted Arms. The voice acting does wear on you after a while, but I'm not going to switch it to Japanese because I just never can adjust to that.

The battle system is grid based, but there's not a whole lot of area to move around in. Your party and the enemy are in separate adjacent grids and you can't cross over. Different attacks light up different grid patterns, like when casting a spell in Final Fantasy Tactics for example, so you have to be careful about how you position your characters, or you could end up not being able to do anything with a character for a turn or two. There's still a lot I have to learn about the game, but I think I'm still in what's bascially a tutorial section.

The party just snuck out of the university to go to a festival and that's where I saved.

I've been watching House and find it amusing, but, to be honest, the way I watch TV for the most part lately is to use part of my brain to watch, but another part to work on something else, like (such as tonight) math.

Since I've been talking about Arrested Development lately anyway, I will say that I think AD is a superior show to House. I don't know if I'd ever be too tempted to get House on DVD. The show frankly is sort of formulaic (and whenever things seem to change -- like the commericals for the season premiere suggested -- they just get put back to where they were after a couple of shows), so it's hard to say why I'd need to rewatch a given episode.

Speaking of which, I did just rewatch Pier Pressure from AD's 1st season.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

I finished "Angel" in Killer8, and I started Sunset Part 1. I figured out how to get past that thing in the garden that I skipped the first time through. The solution was actually something very simple (and had I looked at the map, it would've told me.) There's an egglayer beyond that point...I'm not sure if I want to use it to try to max out the level cap or if I'll just destroy it and continue. I do want to max out before I finish the chapter, but I used the egglayer for the first chapter and it was very tedious...plus, once I just started running around as Dan, I accumulated quite a bit of blood anyway, and I couldn't use any of it since I'd already maxed out for the chapter.

I've noticed that Killer8 mode removes all the clues from the map and it also removed some clues for other things - like the numbers on the candles. Kind of pointless since you had to have already solved all the puzzles to unlock Killer8 mode. I wished I had written down the order of the candles from the first time, though, because I had to go back into my Killer7 file and replay the Angel chapter up to that point in order to find out the correct sequence.

I didn't realize that Travis blatantly calls you "Emir" at the end of Chapter 1. I guess I did always think it was weird that you were receiving all these carrier pigeon letters addressed to someone named "Emir" and they all seemed to only contain information about your own team....

Curiosity got the better of me and I obliterated that egglayer. I wanted to know what it was guarding since I missed this part the first time...and it was just another Travis! I wondered if I'd regret killing that thing but a few minutes later I found a MUCH better place for level-building. There's a room with two respawing Spiral Smiles and they give you tons of blood. I got the maximum of 1000 within minutes. I'm going to max out here before moving on.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

I take that to mean you haven't played the game.

To level up in Killer7, you have to collect blood from enemies. You can only carry up to 1000 liters on your person, though. To level up, you have to take it back to a Harman Room and give it to the blood doctor inside the TV. He converts it to serum, and you can choose which character to give it to and which of their stats to increase with it.

So even though I got the maximum 1000 liters I could carry, that's not the most you can get for the entire chapter. But after you give so much to the Doctor, his machine shuts down and you can't use it again until the next chapter - hence a level cap.

BTW, I have heard a somewhat-plausible theory as to why it seems there are two explanations for Dan's death. He was originally killed by the assassin, but at that point, he was resurrected by Harman Smith to join Killer7. That probably explains why he was acting so lackadaisical towards Emir when Emir had him at gunpoint - he knew that even if he got killed, Harman would just resurrect him again.

But there are still a lot of other things that don't make a whole lot of sense...

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

I made some Enchanted Arms progress today. I found the four tickets to win a golem and entered the contest. I got an achievement for winning, but I think you have to win to advance the story, anyway. This is one of the games where you'll get all 1,000 points just for completing the main game.

Anyway, some stuff happened, and now I'm at a place where I can level up a little. There's a place to buy items and synthesize new golems with the stuff you win from battles. These Golems looks and the possibility to collect 'em all sure remind me of Pokemon, but I'm sure it was totally unintentional. Sure. Unintentional.

It's true that you recover all your health after battle, but you don't recover vitality points. And I think being low on vitality points has some pretty negative consequences. The game may be easy, but it's not as intuitive as a lot of other Japanese RPG's and I still don't have all the terminology down. The small text size is still giving me trouble, too.

The voice acting is so, so bad. I wish I could post clips.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

I played Enchanted Arms again and made it through the first real dungeon. Lots of random battles, but nothing too difficult. I had a party of the three current main characters and a fairly weak golem. During the course of exploring the dungeon, I was able to synthesize a new golem. He's a knight golem with some cool attack abilities and he's a big improvement over what I had before.

There was a lot of overexplanation, elaborate detail when explaining how to do the most mundane things, like press A to hit a switch or climb a ladder.

The boss of the dungeon was pretty easy. The game has a limit break system, called something else, naturally. I had been saving my limits for a boss fight and so I did some devastating damage in the first round. Defeating him earned another achievement.

I've definitely gotten better with the battle system. I can go through random battles really quickly without a lot of fumbling around in the menus or with where to move the characters.

I went on Xbox Live and downloaded Scramble, and got all the easy achievements for it. The rest I can get by just finishing the game, except for one that requires co-op play that I can't do without a Gold subscription. It's another one that I've never played before. The Live version has enhanced graphics and sounds (optional). I've reached Level 3 so far.

Got a lot done in Ratchet and Clank.

I got the RYNO.

I got the HydroPack upgrade, which I didn't get in my original game. This got me the Bolt Collector.

Lastly, there was this section of that ruinied city I never got to, because I couldn't figure out how to get there. Well, I finally found it... and what the hell? At least now the post-credit ending makes a lot more sense (even if Ratchet's reaction doesn't), and I got the Gadgetron PDA.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

I'm at Sunset Part 2 in Killer8. I'm almost through the Kaku building.

Geez, it's a good thing you can play as young Harman Smith in this mode because I don't know how you'd beat the Poison Smiles without his Tommy Gun. You'd have to rely on luck. Poisons only die if you hit them in the weak spot, but since weak points are invisible on this mode, the Tommy Gun is the only weapon capable of shooting rapidly all over their bodies at once. And if Harman dies, it's a real pain in the ass to resurrect him. What is up with this? This is the first game since the Speeder Bike level in Battletoads in which I've had to do something unorthodox with the controller.

I couldn't get Coyote to leap through the hole in the ceiling. Since I've beaten this game before I looked up a faq to find out if there was something I need to get there or if it's an optional thing (I couldn't remember). The Odd Engraving is up there, which I do need to get, but the faq also happened to mention something I didn't realize before - using a character's special move takes up one vial of thin blood. For some reason, I didn't realize that, and that's probably what I'm doing wrong. I use up my thin blood vials with Dan's Collateral Shot on the enemy that guards the room with the hole, so I guess I'll have to make sure I have a few extras before taking that enemy out.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

The posts about Wizards & Warriors in the last progress topic put me in the mood to try that series again. I don't want to replay W&W3 because it was a total pain in the butt and I don't want to subject myself to that again right now, but I did completely replay through the first one, which is by far the easiest of the three.

Now I'm determined to beat Ironsword once and for all so I started playing that one and just beat the giant cloud boss at the end of the first level. Maybe it's just me, but I find that egg to be the hardest of the four golden items you have to get. 9 times out of 10 when I jump for it, I hit the ledge and go sliding down.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

A long time ago I read about this glitch in Wizards & Warriors that lets you exploit the game's system for determining when to show the ending sequence.

Wizards & Warriors doesn't determine that you're at the end of the game by you having just beat the final boss, or having walked through the door after beating the boss, or by what level you're on. It determines it by counting princesses. That's right. Each time you complete a level in that game you rescue a princess and the game counts each one. But there's a glitch that lets you warp backwards from a later level to the first or second level (I don't remember which). Completing the levels again causes you to rescue those princesses again, and the game continues to add them to its count. When you've rescued the "last" princess, regardless of what level you actually just completed, the game will show the ending sequence. By using this glitch, you can beat the game without having set foot in any of the later levels, much less reaching the final boss.

Going back to Killer7...Killer8 mode doesn't seem as condescending as the normal mode did. Unfortunately, it means nothing for the puzzles since they've all been solved already (and most of them are still too blatantly obvious and easy.) But when dealing with the enemies, I do have to think a lot more now about how to get around them in certain situations. It's sort of like hard mode in Resident Evil 0 - I knew all the puzzle solutions by the time I played that mode, too, but thinking my way through the enemies (knowing when to shoot, when to run, and managing the limited amount of ammo) made up for it.

But in Resident Evil 0, Hard Mode was the difference between a 2-1/2 star game and a 3 star game. In Killer7, I think Killer8 mode will be the difference between a 2 star game and a 2-1/2 star game. Unless Killer8 pulls a real surprise out of its ass near the end, nothing will change the fact that this game has the lamest final boss (if you can even call it that) since the big brain in Gradius. (That's part of what made me come here and post "what a load of crap that was" minutes after beating it.)

Star Fox: Command - Oh, hey, I actually have time to play it now! :\ Fair warning, a few spoilers in the next paragraph (even though it's a kind of a given with this post, just thought I'd give that heads up).

Anyway, I'm to the last battle with Anglar. It's proving to be difficult, but I actually have really good fighters. Star Wolf has really nice ships (with the exception of Krystal, but she's not really Star Wolf anyway). I only have one spare ship, so I have to choose carefully who ends up using it. I have figured out how I divvy up the missles, though.

The stylus controls are starting to grow on me. I still hate accidentally doing things like u-turn, but I'm starting to develop a feel for things.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

Yeah, I know about that W&W glitch, but I beat the whole game all the way through. You know the thought had just occurred to me that I had the same problem with this game's final boss that I did with Legend of Zelda - he disappears and reappears around the room so quickly that I never got a good look at him. It wasn't until the second time I beat Zelda and paused the game when he was visible that I realized Ganon was a giant pig. So I paused the game on the W&W final boss and I still can't really tell what he's supposed to be. He might have looked like a hand puppet in W&W3, but at least it was a well-drawn hand puppet, and I could tell what it was (assuming it's the same villain...I think it is, but I'm not sure).

Anyway, in Ironsword, I beat the Waterfall boss and moved onto the fire realm. I need to get the golden crown for the dragon still.

It would've been so much more awesome if the wind boss had been a tornado instead of a cloud.

I played some Test Drive Unlimited. I am loving this. It takes place in perdy Hawaii and you can just drive around and explore and it just feels great. It's more realistic in terms of behavior of other drivers, and the rules of the road, general feel of driving, etc. than GTA but retains that feeling of openness. I love using the interior camera. The level of detail might not be quite up to PGR3, but it feels next gen and the amount of space you have available is impressive.

When you want to race, it seems pretty easy to find them. I won a rookie level race earlier and the sense of speed was nice. It feels a lot less strict than Gran Turismo, so you won't be spinning out of control constantly while you're trying to adjust to driving.

You can buy a ton of different kinds of cars, as well as property on the island, mainly for storing those cars.

I tried out Vectorman. It, uh, seems like it sucks.

It's one of those games where you can barely see what's around you because of the character-screen size ratio.

You also can't stand still and shoot diagonally; Vectorman starts walking when you do that.

Quote: (assuming it's the same villain...I think it is, but I'm not sure).

Yeah, they're both Malkil, although why he's a wizard in one game and a hand puppet of the Burger King in another is beyond me. I think the final boss of 2 is also Malkil (I've never beaten W&W 2 or 3, but since it's Malkil in 1 and 3, I think 2's a safe bet)

I remember the hardest thing about W&W being that Skeleton boss, because I didn't get the axe on my first play through.

belatedly hooked on Sid Meier's Civilization IV. i think i'm too old to be going to my occupation with only 3 hrs of sleep a day.

i think i'm spending too much time playing my 1st scenario, just learning the basics. i (playing with alexandra)should have slaughtered mao zedong 20 turns ago with my mounted bowmen. but i just had to recee his continent first by i trading my horses(clicked wrongly, i could have traded the less valuble rice or wheat) for open borders.

he should be down in several more turns.i'm almost done wearing him out. only so many cheap archers he can churn out, while i'm pillaging the surroundings of his cities.

that and i was reading some british retro gaming mag. it had some screen shots of "altered beast" for sega 16 bit, and i thought "f#ck! why don't they have that ROM on that ROM site i go to. damn". that and an article on the 1st ever RTS console game ever made "[something] zwei", where you control a base with a transforming robot/plane and you can build tanks and stuff to assist you to conquer more bases.

I don't think I've ever beaten the second boss [1B?] by jumping over him. C'est la vie.

It did take me some time to get into that game, mainly because I didn't fully understand the TATE system right away. Without it, beating some enemies at the end of the 2nd stage's levels (those bird / ogre / tengu creatures, when they're in groups) can be difficult.

But after I got it, it made replaying those levels a snap.

FacilityPro said that some people think the 3rd level is when it starts getting harder. It's still really a matter of knowing the use of your techniques.

His first form is a JOKE. He has a spread shot, Malachi's attack from Dawn of Sorrow, a Shoryuken, and a Falcon Kick. Yeah. His second form looks like Sigma's second form in X1, but is nothing like it, and it is kind of cheap. He can paralyze you with purple goop and drain your life to heal himself.

Well, what I actually did was lock onto him and jump straight up when he dashed at me so he'd go under me, and position myself about in the middle of his back-and-forth path so I was close enough to dash at him and smack him around just as he stopped dashing and before he put his guard back up.

I read about the Tate in various places, both in some reviews and you and FP talking about, so it kind of made sense, but I wasn't getting its purpose or the "sword kills you if you don't kill enemies, kill enemies to increase the sword's strength" parts, but didn't realize that stuff doesn't come into play until after the second boss.

I had a nasty experience in Killer8 last night that caused me to lose almost all of my progress. I cleared Sunset Part 2 (and I thankfully saved after that because that boss that consists of two Japanese businessmen with half their heads blown away is a pain in the butt), but I continued to Cloudman and played through half the level when I suddenly got blown up as Coyote. (Geez, even with the Stamina Ring, characters STILL die with one explosion from a Heaven Smile!)

Now, what happened next to get me a "Game Over" was due to my carelessness. You see, the Ulmeyda Smiles on this level don't really come after you unless you shoot at them. They just run around the streets wildly without paying any attention to you. However, if you do get in the direct path of one, it will still blow up and kill you. When I was taking Garcian to retrieve Coyote's bodybag, I didn't bother to scan to see if any enemies were in my path because I had forgotten that little detail and I ran headfirst into one. So now I have to do almost the entire level all over again because I only saved once near the beginning.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

I finally got through the Cloudman chapter, but not without quite a few setbacks. At one point, I had lost three people (Dan, Harman, and Coyote), and I had a really hard time getting back to the save point. It was almost impossible to get past the two enemies just outside the save point door as Garcian, but thankfully, I was able to run him over to the body bag before they blew up on him (at which point the cinema scene takes over, so you don't have to worry). Once I got one body bag, for some reason the location of the next one switched to the same spot. So I was able to get all three just by leaving the save point room.

The battle with Ulmeyda could've been better if it didn't only take one shot to kill him.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

I didn't think too highly of Adventure Island 2. The level design was flat, the play control was stiff, and I didn't like how Higgins would randomly scuffle about the overworld map.

I now have five different save points in Albert Odyssey.

1. One is right in the save point before the final boss, ready to beat the game.

2. Two is ready to beat the game, but is saved in Gigarl town outside of the final dungeon. This makes it easy to instantly travel anywhere in the overworld.

3. Three is in Valerian's Castle.

4. Four is right before going to Balan's Fortress.

5. Five is in Radoria's Castle.

This way if I ever need to record the music from Valerian's Castle, Balan's Fortress, or Radoria's Castle again for any reason, I don't have to play through the entire first half of the game anymore. I'm uploading the mp3s I made, and I'll get back to Killer8 soon.

Played Test Drive Unlimited yesterday but didn't really make any progress. I got involved in a police chase that IRL would have been pretty dangerous. But after I finally got caught, I was calmly handed a ticket... for twenty thousand dollars.

Tonight, watched Simpsons (a so-so repeat about Marge having amnesia, and the new one, also just kinda alright, about Bart getting into jazz, upsetting Lisa) and Family Guy. FG wasn't as good as last week, but good at times.

I played a little bit of Might and Magic, and explored a little more of Doom Castle. Some enemy parties give up to 20,000 experience, so I should continue to level up faster.

In nongaming news, we had a pretty good day today. We did all of our chores (laundry, groceries, etc) early. The weather was warm, so we had another cook out -- probably the last one of the year, I'd guess (we have fall weather all last week). We did a few things today that we hadn't done any other time throughout the year.

First, we visited a park that's out in the country aways, so we don't go there often (though we did spend the 4th of July there, either last year or the year before). We went to one in the city first, but it had absolutely no parking.

We had chicken leg quarters for only time this year. I had been avoiding those because they take longer to cook than most other things, and other reasons. But they turned out well.

We tossed the frisbee back and forth for a while. I don't even remember the last time I did that, but the previous time was with my brother, not FO. Unfortunately, we'll probably need to get another frisbee next year -- this one was in the car too long when it was hot, and, uh, kinda melted. It was okay for today, though.

We did a couple of trails -- one through a forest, and one through a meadow, because the first one wasn't long enough on its own.

This is the year I finally learned how to correctly toast marshmellows. Previously, I had been burning the outside too much. I didn't even know why FO liked to take marshmellows on our trips. But I once accidentally got the outside toasted and the inside melted just right, and after that I was able to duplicate it on purpose.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

The manual for Ironsword says that Malkil is the villain behind everything that's going on, but the final boss, as far as I know, is just the four elementals (which doesn't make a whole lot of sense because you already beat them all earlier and they're much smaller now). I guess that he's a non-entity in this one.

And yeah, I know he's a wizard in the first one (hence the title "Wizards & Warriors" - Kuros would be the warrior), but Ganon was described as being a wizard, too, and he still had a distinct shape as that of a giant pig. The final boss of W&W is indistinguishable to my eyes.

I've made it to the Earth Realm, but I haven't found the golden beer mug for the bear yet. It's funny how that bear looks like a typical "Rare Bear".

I haven't beaten the game myself (nor have I even put much time into it), but I was under the impression that you had to fight Malkil after the elementals.

This reminds me of something else. When I was a child, I would sometimes get Game Players magazine, which would have one large feature on one game (or sometimes one game for each major system -- at the time, that would have been NES, Genesis and PC). It'd sort of be a review / walkthrough, with all the text (after the intro) being screenshot captions.

Half of the time, the screenshots would go all the way until and including the game's ending. Sometimes, it'd stop just before that.

Although I don't know for a fact and can't prove it, my guess is that they showed the ending whenever possible, and didn't show it if they couldn't beat the game before the magazine had to go to print.

SMB3 showed the ending. So did Super C and Golden Axe.

Castlevania 3 didn't, though, and neither did Ironsword.

I'm about halfway through the amusement park in Killer8. I've taken quite a few hits on this stage, but so far none of them have killed me. I have no idea why you get killed instantly by some enemy attacks and others only take off some of your HP.

I wonder how I'm going to fare against that parking lot boss at the end of this level. I wonder if Harman will make that fight easier. I still don't know how you'd get through a lot of things in Killer8 mode without his Tommy Gun.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

Hey, all. Haven't posted here in a while.

I was trying to beat Front Mission and Front Mission 4, but got stuck on them for different reasons.

Front Mission, I beat a mission and then at the next town, my game turned to black for no reason. So, I am scared to go back and do it again since it took an hour.

Front Mission 4, I just can't beat a mission after being stuck a week on the mission before. This game = hard.

So, I decided to clear out the first of hopefully several games on my backlog: Star Ocean 3. I liked the game, it had a good battle system but the storyline didn't click. I'd give it a 7/10 if I ever reviewed it, which I might.

Next up, I have Tales of Legendia and Dragon Quest 8 to finish, and Xenosaga Episode 1 and Grandia 3 that I'm going to start soon.

Did some more in Shinobi. I just beat 3-B.

This game's voice acting really stinks. Hotsuma's lines when he pulls of a Tate were bad enough, and then when I entered the battle with the tiger-tarantula, he says "I will feast on your innards" like he's reading his lines.

... how the hell did I get a B and an A for the two 3 stages? Especially since I was getting my ass kicked in 3-A, and had the sword eating my soul at the end of 3-B (because it took me a while to figure out how to get to the barrier pillars, do it again because I didn't see the second one initially, and just get around because of all the web [and yes, I know you can dash through it]). :shock

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

Much of your rating is due to how many hits it takes to kill the boss. The first time I beat 3B, I somehow beat the boss in only one hit (even though I didn't really know what I was doing) and got an S ranking.

I'm pretty sure the boss bonus is more important than the no-damage, or combo bonus, or magic bonus. (Of course, if you're really playing for score, you'd want everything, but to just get an S rank, the boss alone might be enough).

I don't remember having any complaints with the voice acting. I think you're confused about the 3B boss; I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be the BOSS that says "I will feast on your innards" (how would that even make sense if Hotsuma said it?) I thought that line had some sort of computer processing applied to it that made it difficult to understand.

I guess what I liked about Hotsuma's acting was that it's so understated. It's like the opposite of Dante (in DMC3, say). Part of the reason for that might be that Hotsuma's abilities can speak for themselves. Another part could be that Hotsuma has a reason to not be very happy and extroverted (and which could have planted an eternal seed of doubt about whether his skills are the best, or if he got lucky, or was allowed to...)

Actually, since typing that, I did remember one part of voice acting that was sort of laughably bad. The moth boss in stage 4 says that maybe she will take ... HER LEGS AS A REWARD!!

Something about that just seemed hilarious. Part of it was the silly, abrupt and over the top way it was delivered. More was that it sounds like it's supposed to be horrifying, but it doesn't really make sense. Like, what would that moth lady do with legs? Granted, she doesn't have legs of her own, but I don't think you can just sew someone else's lifeless legs to your body and expect them to work. And even if they did, they'd still be human legs just stuck to a lower body of a moth that doesn't really match.

Maybe she could eat the legs, but why stop there?

In Test Drive Unlimited last night, I bought a couple new cars. I can't remember specifically which ones right now, though. Cars in this game are divided into classes A, B, C, D, etc, with restrictions on the various races. So you can't just save up for a monster car and clear all the races with ease.

Lufia 2 - Defeated the cave with the Lizard Man boss.

Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits - Got through the first chapter with Lord Kharg, I'm on Darc's 1st chapter now. Awesome stuff so far.

Sonic 2 - Might just level skip code to Metropolis Zone 3, since that's where I got before without getting game over. I don't know, though, I kind of want to beat the game from beginning to end. I might just need to get a lot of continues at the beginning.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

In Sonic 2, I eventually got to where I could reach the end pretty easily, but never mastered the final bosses. It's still the best Sonic game I've yet played.

I played some Test Drive Unlimited tonight. I had taken some Nyquil which has made me very sleepy, so it was hard to focus on the game. But I did get some things done.

There was one race where you have to reach 140 MPH on a curvy road to win. However, there didn't seem to be any strict guidelines in place as to where you were allowed to drive, as long as you reached 140 within a minute or so. I noticed on the GPS map that if I turned around from the starting line, I could quickly reach a straight road where getting to 140 would be easy. And what do you know, it actually worked. Normally I'd feel like a cheater, but I think I deserve the win for being creative.

I did another mission where you transport a vehicle. These always involve really cool, really fast cars that you'd like to mess around with a bit. But if you drive the entire 8 to 9 mile distance without damaging the car, you get 80,000 dollars. Each time you collide with something, it takes around 15,000 off of that. Totally perfect also gets you a 40,000 bonus on top of that. This, in a game where the races I'm able to access right now only pay around 10 to 15 thousand each.

So I've got about 200,000 right now and while saving for some property is tempting, I'm probably better off buying different cars to that I can access more events.

I'd like to get back to Enchanted Arms, but time is limited. And I also want to watch the House DVD's. Speaking of those, I got one today. It's disc 2 of season 1, but I don't think it'll be a problem to watch them out of sequence. The episodes seem to stand alone pretty well based on what I've seen so far.

I beat the rematch with Ayame Blackburn in Killer8, and wisely saved afterwards because I lost all my other progress after that due to the fact that Harman got killed and I tried to use Garcian to get him back, but Garcian's gun is worthless.

It wasn't entirely my fault that I lost Harman. I heard an enemy laugh, so I scanned and killed what I found, but when I let go of the trigger and Harman relaxed back into his standing animation, I saw the outline of another (still invisible) enemy that my scanner didn't pick up, but it was so close to me that by the time I hit the trigger to aim at it, it already blew up.

And before I quit last night, my characters gained another level.

Aside from some challenging enemy parties, I'm starting to see what the gimmick of Doom will be. It has hallways that block off a large square region in the middle of the map, and there are no doors to enter the interior. Not only that, but you also can't cast magic in the hallways, so you can warp into the interior, either.

So, figuring out how to get in there will probably be this dungeon's puzzle.

Speaking of which, I never met the king in Alamar, either. I needed some sort of King's Pass, which I don't have. Maybe I just haven't been exploring the overworld enough.

Gah! I'm about halfway through the Lost City in Killer8, but it was a real BITCH getting through the part that can best be described as a 3D version of a repeating screen maze.

The problem is that the Laser Smiles can still kill you in one hit. So when I ran through a tunnel and saw one, I immediately had to double-back into the tunnel and wait safely out-of-way until it self-destructed. The second problem is that the size, shape, and angle of the tunnels makes it hard to see enemies that are heading in your direction from outside, which means I often got blown up by enemies I didn't see until it was too late.

Harman Smith can absorb one enemy explosion with the Stamina Ring equipped, but you really need to use Con to get through this part.

There's one thing I really don't like about these Scooby-Doo/MGS plot reveals where it's "OMG...this person is really this person!" Most of the times, it's always one of the more likable characters in the story (in this case, Iwazaru), and so you think you get to know a character and come to like them, but then you find out that you don't really know them at all. How much of what they said and did was sincere and how much was an act?

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

I sort of made it through a big mystery in Might and Magic. It probably will sound meaningless to anyone who hasn't played the game, but to those who are playing it, it could be a big spoiler.

In Doom, I got the key to the "letter messages". All the letter messages are from the castles, and as I have now entered every castle, I had all of them, so I was able to decode it. What you get is a message telling you the location of all the permanent stat bonuses in the game.

I had already found most of them on my own - the one in E-1 (the statue of judgement), the one in E-2 (the strange alien device), the ones in Dusk (prism of precision and flame of agility), Dragadune (green clover) and Portsmith (glowing pool, +4 might).

The only ones I'm missing, in fact, are from areas I haven't mapped so much as a single square of yet.

Unfortunately, either I made a mistake at some point, or the game did. One of the messages was one character too long, so things didn't line up perfectly. I still managed to figure it out. The problem is, assuming I accidentally added a character to that line at one point, there is one possible ambiguity in the location of one of the two remaining stat bonuses. But worst come to worst, I'll just look in both locations.

I guess the next place I should head to should be D-2.

BTW, I'm still missing two of the "number" messages. I suppose I could try to put together what I have, and see if I could guess the missing words. I wouldn't get my hopes up for that, though.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

I obviously can't comment too much on Killer 7, but I have seen FO play it enough that I can comment on the graphics.

I'm not really wild about this "cell shading" thing. I said of Wind Waker that the game does NOT look like a cartoon, but rather looks like a 3D game that just has less detail.

For one thing, in almost all cartoons before the digital age, animation was from left to right (or vice versa). (There are RARE exceptions, like in the Disney Robin Hood movie, where the chicken plays football) In a 3D game, however, the animation is almost always in the depth direction, moving into (or out of) the screen. And that's how Wind Waker's movement is.

For Killer 7, it's also obvious that you're not looking at something handdrawn, but that underneath the cell shading is a 3D polygon engine, and they're just shading most of the polygons the same color.

When characters move, for example, so that the lighting on their face changes, and a region that was light changes to one that is dark, you can see the whole polygons abruptly change color. And the transition regions are always jagged.

Due to things like that, it's almost like this style draws MORE attention to the graphics' underlying mechanics being based on polygons. In a normal 3D game, proper shading and such can hide the polygon transitions.

I'm sorry, I'd like to like innovative art styles, but I just think cell shading usually does not look good. Oddly, I just saw a review of the game that complained it had any hand-animated cinemas! I thought those looked a lot better than the in-game cinemas, though even they had some typical anime problems (lazy animation)

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

There were a lot of things in that review that were fucked up. Like how he praised the game for having no music, which is not only a ridiculous thing to praise a game for, but Killer7 DOES have music. There are some places where there is no music, or it's very understated, but there are more places that do have music than don't (again, so many that the soundtrack manages to be two discs and still leaves off some songs.) He also complained about the game having puzzles, and in the same breath, complained about it in the Resident Evil games, too. Note that he didn't complain that Killer7's puzzles are too easy, just that it has them.

My problem with the cutscenes isn't "OMG! They're anime and don't match the in-game style!" It's that they do contain some problems that are evident in some other forms of anime. Most notably is the lack of animation. The scenes are drawn well, but hardly anything in them is animated, and when it does move, it's stiff and doesn't flow very fluidly. (Watch when Garcian cuts his steak with the knife, it's like he hesitates once per millisecond.) Some hand-drawn scenes (mostly in the Cloudman chapter) use some CGI for enhanced effects, but it makes the characters look like their moving parts are on ballbearings and are disjointed when they move (the old cowboy's lips, for example, or the weird way the woman in the bar moves her head.) Other times it's quite obvious where they took shortcuts to save on animation. Example - a scene where Garcian and Christopher Mills are talking in their car, but when Mills talks, he's slumped forward with his head rested down in his arms so you can't see his mouth. No need to animate a moving mouth if you can't see it.

The game even reuses animation - that scene with the Handsome Rangers must be shown at least three times.

As for the characters, if they could have gotten them to look like this (http://www.flyingomelette.com/ezboard/pap/killer7.jpg) in the actual game, that would have been infinitely better. But another problem I have with the graphic style isn't so much the characters as it is the backgrounds - sometimes, it looks kind of cool, but other times it looks like they're unfinished. Ironically, some backdrops have hand-drawn components as well as the cel-shaded polygons (like the windmills in Santo Domingo) and those areas often look better than the ones that are just polygons.

Also, the enemy designs in this game are rather lame. It's mostly just the same Heaven Smiles over and over again, which is basically a generic human-shaped zombie with a very simple color pattern. Although some of the mid-stage bosses, particularly the giant egglayers that fill up entire rooms, are more interesting.

Edit - Oh, and I also just beat the Hopper7 bonus round. This is what you get for beating Killer8. It's the first stage of the game (only) on normal difficulty, but the Heaven Smile enemies have been replaced with a goofy-looking guy in a grasshopper costume (this is a reference to the development team that made the game, which is called Grasshopper.) You can't play as Harman Smith in Hopper7 mode, but the enemies all die in one hit, anyway.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

There's one thing about Killer7's story that perplexes me: Is it implied that Garcian cannot actually see what's going on in the "Forbidden Room"? Because after the first time he goes in there, he tells Christopher Mills "the master is gone", but why would he think he's gone if he just saw him in the forbidden room? The second time he steps in there (at the Union Hotel) it's almost impossible to figure out what just happened there until you've played Killer8 mode and know that the human Harman Smith (who Garcian just met a few minutes ago) uses a Tommy Gun, but Garcian doesn't seem to react to or notice any of what transpires.

The next part contains what could possibly be a major spoiler, so if you plan to play this game, you may want to skip it:

Anyway, some people interpret the ending as being that Garcian really was the other Killer7 all along and that they were just multiple personalities that he took on. I don't buy this theory for several reasons. The first and foremost is that other characters in the game react to the person they see as though they are seeing that person. Example: The chef who gets excited to see Mask de Smith because he's a fan of wrestling. Even with a mask, I doubt it's possible to mistake a black guy with a giant Mexican guy. And the assassin Curtis Blackburn who recognizes Dan Smith as the guy he killed many years ago. Curtis may be getting up there in years, but I still doubt he's going to confuse a black guy he's never met with a Korean dude he knew and killed. And that brings me to the second of my reasons - if you accept that Garcian is the other personalities, then you have to accept that there are two different explanations for Dan's death. Something, or someone, had to have revived him after the first death, so there is some supernatural force at work.

I found the another stat bonus, and the cleric's retreat.

Most of the rest of the retreat didn't do much for me (and I'm not even sure what "personality" does), but I'd guess I at least no longer have to be worried about stealing Erliquin's treasure.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

Right now I have to do various "chores" in this game.

For some reason, Sonya's (but pretty much just Sonya) age just kept going up and up. When I was last exploring Doom, she was over 100, and died ("a natural death") about 50% of the time I'd camp.

The chore is that I have to visit certain areas in the game several times to accomplish different things:

-Visit the land that time forgot to keep their ages down. I've visited it twice since last exploring Doom (and several times since then); everyone else is back to 18, but Sonya is still about 39.

-Visit Korin Bluffs to get Thundranium.

I've been earning experience faster than gold. But it costs 4000 gold to level up. Sometimes I don't have enough, but Thundranium is the fastest way to earn more.

-Visit Trivia Island to get gems.

I haven't had to do that too often. As long as I don't constantly and indiscriminately use Meteor, my using rate might be similar to my normal earning rate.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

I played Test Drive Unlimited. It's one of the best gaming experiences I've had with the 360 so far. It just feels so real sometimes (not all the time... head on collisions just slow you down a tad and get the cops a little angry).

The game is quite nonlinear, so it's hard to make detailed progress posts. Tonight, I did a vehicle transport mission (the one where you get paid the most only if you do no damage to the car). That got me around 90,000 dollars, but I didn't get the perfect bonus. I did a "package delivery", which earned about 40,000 dollars. The catch with those is that if you fail the mission by being too slow, you have to pay 40,000 yourself. Another notable event was having to reach 170 MPH driving the wrong way in traffic. I think I could have cheated that event too, and simply turned around to drive with traffic, but it wasn't necessary.

I finished a couple other amateur level events, too. I decided to buy some more property for additional car storage as opposed to getting another car and then being low on space.

I got an achievement point for that, also for driving more than 200 miles, and I think some more besides. My total is 3150 by now, but I haven't had reason to log into Xbox Live lately to update it.

In the game, I'm currently at the Pro level, which is the third out of five. There's still plenty of events to do in the earlier levels too, but it gives you some choices.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

I started mapping E4. I mapped the mountain in the middle, which has the entrance to P. Peak.

I also beat the "Dragon Town Meeting". I was hoping it would give me the Dragon's Tooth (which I had been requested to get over a year ago), but it didn't. It did, however, net me over 40,000, just for that one fight. When I got back to Sorpigal, everyone leveled up at least once, and a couple leveled up twice.

But there is something about E4 that could make it a pain in the ass to fully map. Certain squares automatically reposition you when you enter them, and you might not be able to turn any other direction.

I might play Sonic 2 next. For several reasons:

1. After playing Killer7 twice in a row, I'm in the mood for a sidescroller again (especially since Rockin' Kats was such a dud.)

2. I've never really gotten into the Sonic series and maybe it's about time I gave one a serious try.

3. I'd like to try another Genesis game and I'd rather try one that has a chance of actually being good. (LandStalker still remains the best Genesis game I've completed so far, but it was only mediocre at best.)

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

I was about to make some subjective comments about Might and Magic, but I was worried I might have been repeating myself with things I may have said before. But if I'm brief enough, I guess reiteration won't hurt.

I think Might and Magic is clearly superior to Phantasy Star in almost every way. Music, certainly. Battle system, definitely. Puzzles. And while PS is alleged to show that the Master System was supposedly technologically superior to the NES, I even prefer M&M's graphics.

But... I'm not sure if I'd quite put M&M up there with Final Fantasy. I think I do final Final Fantasy's battle system a bit more unpredictable and engaging, and maybe even faster paced.

Lately, I tend to use one particular strategy a lot in M&M: Have all three mage-spell users cast fire or bolt (on the back row if there's any enemies there), and have the knights attack. This takes out the majority of the parties I've been facing in one round.

I've been using bolt or fire rather than sword or prism because, even though they strike fewer enemies, they tend to do 50~110 points of damage, while sword often does less than 30.

Considering the continued effectiveness of bolt and fire, which are only level 3 spells, it doesn't matter much if the characters casting those spells would be any combination of archers or wizards.

The problem is, after you discover an efficient strategy, you don't need to think anymore to continue to apply it.

Fortunately, every battle is not EXACTLY the same, so it still pays a bit to pay some attention to see if the strategy needs tweaking. The game needs that to keep interest in the battles.

I'm really wondering where they're going to go with this series. The multiple endings (well, some of them) really make you question how things are "truly" going to play out.

Speaking of Killer7 cutscenes, you can find pretty much all of them on Youtube just by searching "Killer7", but I'll spotlight two of them here:

This one is done with the game's normal graphics engine (cel-shaded)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6ksPFBkfJw

This one is hand-drawn (anime)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6mK1m03imU&mode=related&search=

I chose these two because they both feature Dan Smith, who is my favorite playable character in the game. (Killer7 does contain some really disturbing cutscenes, but these two are relatively tame.)

I'm beginning to think this whole "alternate ending" thing is really bad for storytelling. (Actually, it's not the first time I've thought that because I mentioned it in my Dark Savior review.) I even just heard an advertisement for the X-Men 3 DVD that boasts "three alternate endings!!!" I suppose there are exceptions to the rule and rare cases where having multiple endings can be appropriate (example: I don't think any of the alternate endings of Chrono Trigger are seriously meant to be accepted as the canon ending of the story.) But it's becoming a gimmick that seems to be taking the place of having the story being about anything.

When we reach the ending of a story, we should be able to look back and see how every step of the way led to that conclusion. But the way things are now it's like a bunch of crap happens, and some more crap happens, and then depending on what crap you do and what crap you don't do, you might get one of 3 dozen possible endings - most of which are complete crap. You'll know the good ones because they're longer and have credits. As for which one is the definitive ending - we'll leave that for you to decide and argue about endlessly on message boards.

They called Greg Nightmare the final boss fight, but that isn't the final stage, so that's not what I was referring to when I said the final boss was as lame as the Gradius brain. He is more of a legitimate boss fight than the real final one, but he's still not really that big of a deal, either. I beat him on my first try.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

In Doom, I'm up to Phobos Lab. This game is just so much more advanced than I was expecting it to be. It's funny how it and Doom 3 seem to have almost nothing in common, though, aside from being first person shooters. It's interesting to play an FPS where you don't have to take height into account. You can't aim up or down, so if there's an enemy higher than you, like up the stairs, you just have to make sure you're lined up properly with it and you'll make contact.

Aside from Doom, I've spent some time earning achievement points on arcade. I started with Galaga, and I think it's the first game I've gotten all the points for. It was just a matter of spending the time. I had to get to stage 30, encounter one last kind of ship, and get a perfect on a challenging stage.

Next I put in Scramble, not the best of games, but it has it's moments. Stage 1 is easy, stage 2 is annoying but learnable and eventually kinda fun, stage 3 is exciting because of all the fireballs to dodge, stage 4 is unmemorable, and I accidentally died at the start of stage 5. Today, I got the points for finishing stages 3 and 4. My point total is over 3300 now (I know it's not on the profile yet).

Coincidentally, the only reason I was tempted to get Doom 3 was because the special edition came with Doom 1 and 2. But I thought the special edition was still too expensive, so I passed.

I think some old ID games might have been released into the public domain. Or at least if not full games, then parts of them. (I know for an absolute fact that the first few levels of Wolfenstein were released as Shareware to get people interested)

I think as a consequence there might be freeware versions of Doom and Quake for the Dreamcast.

Re: Game Progress Topic #65

So I went back to Enchanted Arms as planned. I was really getting close to the point where I'd forget everything about it, so I figured I should try to make some progress. Most of what I did was story scenes. I was rewarded with one of the best CG movie sequences I've seen in a very long time, maybe ever. I then got a bunch of achievement points for finishing a scripted battle, cool. I've now got control of Atsuma again, but with new party members. I'm trying to get stronger fighting some random enemies.

You level up like normal, but you also get SP which can be used to increase a variety of stats. Every time you increase a stat, the amount you need to increase it again goes up a lot. I've apparently been playing for close to 5 hours.

I did 4-B of Shinobi.

Akujiki ate my soul when I was trying to figure out how to get to that pillar on a ledge that I couldn't jump to :(

I don't know why it took me that long to think about air dashing, I used it plenty of times (usually on accident) in battle.

I cracked up at the legs line, but I'm not sure I would have if not for Crawl's little rant on it.

For unknown reasons, I started a New Game+ of Sigma Star Saga. I guess the curiosity of what happens if you don't shoot down Blune, or what the endings you can only get in a New Game+ are won me over.

I remembered how Sigma Team gets wiped out in such an anticlimactic and ridiculous way that you're left wondering what Recker's problem was. I had forgotten one of them gets taken down in an Independence Day parody (runs his own ship into a laser to bring down an giant ship), making it all the more stupid.

Re: wow

Well, I FINALLY got some time in for gaming tonight, but I still didn't play too much.

I was mostly mapping E3 -- I think? Anyway, it's the area with the white mountain.

I also entered the Astral Plane, and started mapping, but gave up quickly.

That might be the hardest area in the game to map: You have no automap, and can't even use the locate spell. So, you have no idea where you're starting. I guess it's like mapping a Phantasy Star dungeon (except that game might at least let you orient yourself. I think that must have been what the compass was for, though I never used it)

And there are lots of open spaces. And barriers. And random spots where magic is not allowed, so you can't warp past the barriers there. But you can warp past them elsewhere.

Anyway, I found a door that asked for a key card. I HAVE a key card, but the door rejected it, and tossed me back in Sorpigal.

Then in E3, I was mapping an area where I got attacked at every step. I got a little tired, though, so I'm leaving off there for now.

I finally found Og. He wasn't difficult to find -- I merely hadn't looked in that area yet. Fortunately, by the time I found him, I already had both idols, and both clues, too. He gives you some experience, but other than that, mostly an obscure clue.

I think the only areas I haven't mapped at all yet are A-1, and, perhaps, A-2. Maybe I should start on those next.

I got my hair cut this morning. It was over 12 inches long, so they donated it.

I tried to get my new vehicle registered at the DMV, but they aren't open on Saturdays. Looks like I'll have to take a vacation day for that.

I played a little of Sonic 2 last night. Eh, I didn't play enough to get a fair impression of it, but I really don't like the control so far. Is there a particular reason the control can't be as precise as, oh, say the characters in Contra? Or how about Plok for another character who spinrolls into the air when he jumps? But I keep missing platforms because Sonic overshoots them.

Re: wow

I think it does take time to get used to the controls in the Sonic games.

While Sonic 1 wasn't all that difficult, it still wasn't a game you can really play to win on your first try. You have to learn the first stage(s) so you know how to get all the rings, and all the 1-ups, and that takes some trial and error, because, as I recall, it's not just a matter of exploring exhaustively. If you go the wrong way at certain times, you can't go back, and you'll have to remember that for next time.

It seems like Sonic 2 is the same way.

Watching FO is sort of making me feel in the mood to play another Sonic game... perhaps 3 more than 2, though. I dont' know if I'll go through with it, however.

Re: wow

I played Enchanted Arms tonight. I escaped from prison and made it through this sewer dungeon that turned out to be pretty long. A couple of my characters almost ran out of vitality points and I was debating whether to replace them with golems or not. I really can't get a feel for whether I should be using golems mainly, and just bringing the human characters out on occasion, or vice-versa. I got the blueprints for a bunch of different golem types and created a couple of them.

The dungeon turned out to have no boss. I'm now in London City and I have to go back to Yokohama. The game's main threat right now is the Queen of Ice, a devil golem (the most powerful kind) who was released and obliterated a city effortlessly. London City's king wants to release the Emperor of Fire to fight her, but the resistance thinks that if they fought, the destruction would be incalculable. There's some other interesting details involving the main character, but no need to spoil it.

Speaking of Atsuma, he's so stupid sometimes that it's like he has something wrong with him. "You can't walk through water, you'll drown!" Then another character: "Haven't you ever heard of swimming"? Atsuma: "Swimming?" It's mostly an excuse to teach you gameplay mechanics, but he's stupid at other times, too.

I'm liking the game quite a lot, actually.

I also played some Doom, clearing another area. I'm almost finished with the first chapter, I think.

Speaking of Doom, I have played various versions of it in the past (I think the only version I currently own is Final Doom for the Playstation).

My problem with it is that while running around and fighting enemies might be fun, after that you have to tediously go over the areas with a fine tooth comb to find hidden keys and passages to exit the area.

I finally started mapping A2 and A1.

A2 didn't seem too hard at first, but going through the valley of fire was sort of stressful (will you make it to a point where you can camp before you die?)

A1 doesn't seem to have any gimmicks yet, but it does have parties of 16 headed hydras, multiple Titans, and other tough enemies.

In fact, exploring A1 tonight is the first time I've ever beaten a Titan in battle.

Oddly, they don't give too much experience. A Titan party might only give 5,000 exp. On the other hand, a party of 16 headed hydra might give 37,000 exp.

Re: ....

By the way, when I, awhile ago, answered CB007's question about how far I was in this game, I guessed only about 60%. I think I've made some substantial progress since then.

I think the last time I mentioned a character's level, it was when Vyrana was at level 38. By now, she's about level 46 or 47.

I also have now at least started mapping every single overworld grid. I have more than half completely finished.

I finished some major quests. I did the Tam and Tom quest. I rescued all the prisoners. I helped Og (though there still might be more to that). I finished Perilous Peak. I solved the Ruby's Riddle. I beat Raven.

The game foreshadows all of these puzzles at the beginning of the game, so it seems like there are countless things to do, and for a long time it seems like you haven't done anything. It now finally seems like I've accomplished more than I have yet to accomplish.

I might guess I'm as much as 80% through the game now.

But I still don't think I'm into the end game. I still have more major quests left (including finishing the quests for the Kings, and the Astral Plane).

And some things are just complete mysteries.

Okay, I lied about how enemy placement/movement is just "enemies fly at you in a straight line and you shoot them". It's "enemies fly around in pretty patterns and you shoot them".

For stages that actually have some form of level design, they're bland. The Earth Armada at the end of the Ice planet plays like a really, really bad SMB3 air ship.

That's what I thought some of the enemy patterns in Gate of Thunder were like. Instead of, you know, trying to actually kill you, they'd fly in big circles around the circumference of the screen, and if you were in the middle, you could just hold down the fire button to blow them all away.

We saw Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy last night. I didn't really know if I'd like this movie too much because I never liked Will Ferrell much on Saturday Night Live, but it actually did have a number of jokes and parts that were pretty damn hilarious, with the big fight scene between all the rival newscasters being the best.

It's a lot like Austin Powers in that a lot of jokes misfire and fall flat, but the funny parts are really funny, and there's a lot of SNL people and celebrity cameos. Champ Kinds (David Koechner) is like Fat Bastard in the sense that you don't really know why anything he says and does is supposed to be funny, but Brick Tamland (Steve Carell) was pretty good.

Yeah, we were hanging out with my brother yesterday. We had to take his cat to the vet, and help him pick up groceries. Since he liked some Will Ferrell things, I thought it might be an excuse to see the movie.

It takes a little while to get going, but it does have funny parts. To tie it back to the Will Ferrell thread in the entertainment forum, it wasn't all just screaming, and it was a lot funnier than the "cheerleader" sketch. (I wonder if the previews made it look worse than it is?)

The big fight scene was indeed the funniest part of the movie (and had cameos by Luke Wilson, Tim Robbins, Ben Stiller, and Vince Vaughn), but other good scenes included when Ron blew a conch horn to assemble his news team (and the camera pans over forested valleys). When Ron was playing the jazz flute was pretty funny, too. Now, that particular part was sort of mindless, silly humor, but, hey, it was still funny.

I thought it was better than Kicking and Screaming (which I also saw with my brother, who agrees, but FO didn't see it).

3 stars (which is what Ebert and I think Qwipster gave it) is within the realm of reason.

I heard that the previews contained a lot of scenes that were ultimately excised from the final cut of the film. Maybe those scenes weren't going over well with test audiences, so they axed them.

I almost finished visiting every square in C4, but near the end I was attacked by more Sea Dragons. The last time I fought them, many levels ago, they gave me a game over. Well, they gave me another one. The weird thing is that their difficulty is greatly out of proportion with other enemies in that area (mostly Natives -- even individuals are Natives -- though you do have to fight them without the use of magic).

Maybe I'll try to gain a level or two before I go back to any of these areas that's killed me.

Re: ....

I forgot how incompetently designed the Forgotten Planet is.

It randomly assigns ships to you when you get into fights, and there's three that are extremely large and extremely slow. Often because of the layouts of the FP's shmup segments, as well as the single "mega enemy" in the area, it's fucking impossible to navigate when you get one of these ships (one of them actually splits open when it gets hit, but a lot of good that does you when it also takes off a piece of your life meter). In fact, before I was able to even make any progress here, I got three Game Overs because of the "mega enemy" and a large ship.

I beat the boss of the area and was running out on the timer. I ended up with one of the large ships against that enemy, and managed to kill it, though I had barely any life left. Then I got into another fight was a large ship, and died. Now I have to go kill that boss again (which takes fucking forever), but had my fill for today.

I don't think I had too much trouble with Sonic's controls after a little adjustment period.

I think in Sonic 2 he has the spin dash move where you hold down and press a button, then let go to launch him. When I go back to playing Sonic 1, I keep wanting to use that, but it's not available.

I've been really wanting to play a Pokemon game again for some reason. One limitation I've had is not having anyone to trade with, but I've read that the next one for DS will have online battles and trading. I'd have to buy the USB adapter, but that's worth thinking about.

I said I had my fill for today, but I guess I'm justing anxious to get this game out of my life.

Thankfully I found you could save after fighting that boss, which was great because it took me about eight attempts to escape!

Three of these attempts failed because of a glitch. After I shot down the proper number of enemies (I'm not sure if I've ever said this, but the point of the shmup segments isn't to get to the end, it's to kill a certain number of enemies which explains why they have about as much structure as a Yoshi's Story level) the ship continued to fly. Forever. I had to reset. Three fucking times. This happened to me a fourth time when I was just trying to get around the planet.

The other attempts failed because of that damn blade enemy and getting placed in a ship that was too fucking huge to do anything about.

I also got better acquainted with how halfassed this game's plot is. I won't talk about it here, and I'm not sure I'll talk about it in that seperate topic I made.

Then I got the item I needed to get the New Game+ only endings.

Well, that's all we were talking about: how the control seems on a first impression.

It looks to me like FO has gotten used to it, because by now she's been blowing through the game. She's already up to the Metropolis Zone, so she's beaten something like 5 worlds in a row on her first try without getting a game over.

In Might and Magic, I FINALLY found the Pirate's Cove! That was holding up a lot of other quests from Lord Ironfirst. In fact, after finishing that one, the others were all completed automatically. After that, I guess the quests just reset back to the beginning; you don't get anything special for doing them all, though if you wanted the experience again, perhaps you could do them again (So, maybe that resets Raven?)

However, the experience isn't really that big a deal. You'd get more experience by fighting the Dragon Town Meeting, or some 16 headed hydra parties.

Re: ....

To elaborate a little more on my Sonic 2 experience:

1. First of all, I'm skipping the Chaos Emeralds for now. When you enter a bonus stage you lose all of your rings, thus negating your chance of getting an extra life. I'll try for the Chaos Emeralds later on a replay.

2. I am more used to the controls now, but I still don't think they're 100% good. I still occasionally overshoot things and there's a really noticeable delay when you try to duck.

3. I didn't think Metropolis Zone was really all that difficult. It did take me several tries to learn everything and it was tougher than anything that came before it, but I still got through it before I got a Game Over on it.

4. I can see where this game might seem a little difficult at first, but eventually would become really easy, making it possible to earn a ton of extra lives in the earliest stages for use in later stages (which also might become really easy with enough practice.)

5. There's a 1-up in the Wing Fortress Zone situated in such an easy spot near a checkpoint that it gives you unlimited chances to get through one part (which is probably the hardest part of that stage.)

Of Genesis games I've played, I'd say it's better than Insector-X, NBA Jam, or Two Crude Dudes. But it's hard to say at this point whether it's better than LandStalker, which I'd probably give 2-1/2 stars.

Of other 2D sidescrollers I've played lately, it's definitely better than Rescue Rangers 2 and probably better than Rockin' Kats. At least it looks much better than either of those games, although I can't say its music's made any impression on me.

Yeah, it seems like whenever I want to talk about whether a game's controls are good or not, it's always cast into whether or not they give you trouble, which I don't think is necessarily the most relevant issue.

I mean, I eventually was able to master the bizarre jumping head-butt control in Demon's Crest well enough to get all the items from the bonus game. But that doesn't prove that the controls are "good"; it just proves that it's possible to eventually master any control set up, no matter how unintuitive.

Actually, judging controls is one situation where taking "fun" into account is appropriate. Just because you're able to master controls past the point where you no longer have trouble with the game doesn't mean that you enjoy them.

Star Fox: Command - I got all of the endings. There's a few other stages here and there I need to unlock, but I got the basic overview of the plot.

Out of all the pilots, I can safely say that Bill and Krystal (Cornerian version) are the worst while Star Wolf are among the best (in different regards). Fox is, obviously, the most balanced. It got to the point where I could decide who to send after missles and who would do a good job on other random missions.

I enjoy this game. It's got a little bit of strategy with some all-range fighting. There isn't a whole lot of corridor fights (just missles and a boss fight), so if that was your favorite part of the Star Fox series, this game will (again) disappoint. If you're a die-hard for the story, go for this one.

I guess I don't remember the songs that well now, but I think I liked Sonic 2's music a bit.

played Doom and Enchanted Arms.

For Doom, I'm still in episode 1, I've probably cleared 7 or so levels. The last one I beat was the first time I noticed that issue of having to look around a little bit for keycards rather than just finding them naturally as you progress. I'm still enjoying the game, it's really simple but not at all boring. I'm playing at the standard "Hurt me plenty" difficulty, so I can earn the achievements.

In Enchanted Arms, I left London City and made it to the old military base in the forest, where I fought a boss. It really didn't have anything to do with the story, just happened to be blocking our way. It was a pretty easy one. I actually ended up fleeing from a random encounter earlier that gave me a lot more trouble than the boss could. I still earned an achievement for it, though... I'm freakin obsessed with those. I'm about to exit the forest and be closer to Yokohama.

I got all the way to the Death Egg Zone in Sonic 2 without using a single continue, but then used up all of them on the last two bosses. Metal Sonic is easier now that I learned something about him I didn't realize before. But I don't yet have a good strategy to beat Dr. Robotnik. It's like the final boss of Ys 3 in that there's a very tiny window of space and time where you have to hit him and you have to be careful not to touch him anytime or anywhere else. Plus, I haven't learned all of his patterns yet.

The fact that he's a giant robot that flies into the air via rockets and tries to land on you reminds me a lot of the Rescue Rangers 2 final boss, but this one's a lot more competent.

I was right that earlier stages do get really easy with some practice. I had 12 lives at the final stage and (I think) three continues. And yeah, I used all that up on the final bosses and still didn't beat them.

I once got the Succubus Queen battle down to one Demon King. Damn, that was close!

Due to the game's 255 cap on both damage dealt, and enemy hit points, most enemies can't be too difficult. Even a boss can be taken out with a single hit by me now (including that "One by Air" boss).

The thing about the Succubus Queen, though, is that that party has over 6 enemies with about 255 hp each (I've done 210 damage to one without killing it). And while having over 255 hp max protects me from most enemies, it doesn't against the Demon Kings: They have an instant Eradicate attack (which can't even be cured in battle), and it seems like it always works.

I dunno about this movie. I'm not sure what you're supposed to think about the ending of the movie, considering how abrupt it is (though of course that's a standard technique of forcing the viewer to think it over).

Considering all the religous stuff in the movie, I think the ending has to play back into that. Maybe Scorsese is trying to say that Saint Francis's philosophy has no place in the mean streets?

Or that Charlie thought he was doing penance for his sins before, but he didn't really know what that means?

As for Johnny Boy, I agree with FO, he's not sympathetic (as opposed to say, Travis in Taxi Driver, at least for me). I guess he's an inevitability, though: Who hasn't known someone like him at some point in their (probably early) life? What do you do with a person like him? Anything?

Speaking of Scorsese films, maybe it'd be worth checking out The Departed. Berardinelli says it's his best film since Goodfellas. Of course, I don't know if I'll agree, but if true, that's very high praise.

Re: ....

Damn, it seems like I'm getting a lot done.

I finished up the quest by finding "One by Water". After that, I fought the Dark Rider again.

I finished mapping A1.

I might not have finished mapping Doom yet, but I have found the main thing of significance there.

And

I found an area I had no idea, before actually going / being there, that it existed: The Soul Maze. I'm there right now.

Re: ....

The thing that started to annoy me about Charlie in Mean Streets is that he reminds me of certain people I know that let others walk all over them. They allow it because they believe they can't do anything to hurt someone else's feelings or else God will be angry with them, or something like that. Now I'm not a religious person, but the way I see it, if God really is testing them, then perhaps there are different kinds of tests, and maybe being strong and looking out for yourself by not getting taken advantage of is one of them. It's not that I don't think Mean Streets is a good movie, but it's odd watching a movie when almost the whole time you want to punch both main characters in the face.

In other news, I beat Sonic 2. I had about 17 lives and at least 5 continues, but I didn't actually continue once during the whole game. I beat Metal Sonic and Dr. Robotnik on my first try tonight.

The thing with Robotnik last night is that I didn't know he would fling his arms at you at certain times, and that's what got me on my very last life. Tonight, I knew all his patterns up to that point and knew when he was vulnerable, so I was just waiting to see what other patterns he had after the arm-flinging...but he didn't have any more, so I was able to take him out.

I might be willing to give the game 3 stars. It has some really good parts and took some time to learn. I think it's better than Rockin' Kats. I might try for the Chaos Emeralds now.

One thing about this game, however, is that some stages in the middle of the game seem to be just added padding. Like the Cave Zone and the Hilltop Zone. There just isn't a lot of substance to those stages. Casino Night Zone is gimmicky, but at least it's unique and looks pretty.

Re: ....

Hmm... Just based on watching FO play, I don't know if I'd say the end of Sonic 2 looked as climactic as the end of Sonic 1. On the other hand, it did take her as long to beat 2 as it did for me to beat 1 (three days, playing about the same amount each day).

Geez, this part in Might and Magic could be the game's ultimate mapping challenging. I have to keep doing things to reorient myself. I'm maybe a quarter through it now, but I'll probably take a break.

Re: ....

played a little of streets of rage at normal mode and couldn't get pass the stage with the barrels tumbling down on you, using mostly axel and roo once. guess i'll stick to blaze.

as for civ 4, i played my india game for so long over the weekend, i had to take leave on monday, cause i was having such a f%cking headache after it. right now, persia, egypt and spain has been totally destroyed by mostly mongolia and france. rome is next. i guess i pretty much pulled the strings for that to happend. now it's only me, greece, mongolia and france. build the UN, only to have mongolia hogging the elections cause it has the highest culture points and the biggest population. and cultural points is the best way i could win right now. i don't know how i'm gonna defeat mongolia now, should have let it get so strong. saved my game and tried hacing a defensive pact with greece, only to have mongol declare war on me after a few turns. to think our relationship was just brilliant until i took the pact. didn't save after that.i don't think i can hold off a mongol invasion. way behind in military technology.

also tried playing a short china game using qin shi huang and wiped out the aztecs pretty easily once i got chu ku nus(sp?specialised chinese crossbow units) and knights. could have wiped them out faster if it didn't take so long for me to find iron.

Re: ....

I beat a Tails-only game of Sonic 2. I didn't continue at all again. Metal Sonic and Eggman are really easy once you know how to beat them.

Another thing that's great about Sonic 2 is that in the Sky Chase Zone, when you pop your animal friends out of the robots, they fall to their doom.

Speaking of Sky Chase Zone....
