This is wonderous news, Damar. But the present has to be just right...

The choice was clear...

It was the greatest birthday party ever!

As a bonus, here's a fun picture of Zero, in case the character still maintains the same associations for you as it does for me.

Bwahahahahahaa!!!

This IS the next GPT!
....
I went skill hunting with Kenshin in SW2. I STILL CAN'T GET AWAKENING 2 FOR HIM. I don't wanna try and go for his 4th weapon again without it.. I should go skillhunting with Tadakatsu next, because I'll need a few of the special skills for trying to get his 4th weapon. The requirements for that stage are very tough, but not like Kenshin's. But still very tough.

Got Tadakatsu's 4th Weapon! I easily got Awakening 2 off of Yoshikage Asukura for Tadakatsu, and I couldn't have gotten the weapon without that skill. I also forged a really good 3rd for Tadakastu beforehand.

I've got 14% completion in Saint's Row and it's getting a bit more challenging. I also tried some online deathmatch play. It wasn't bad, but the arenas were a little uninspired. I think I did fairly well.

Well I made it to the Spikey Tiger in Secret of Mana and got it handed to me. Actually, I think I made some progress with the boy alone (whom I named "Crono"), but eventually got trapped in its Fire Breath, then pounded with that other flame attack.

(EDIT: Okay, it would probably help if I said what game so people would know what I was talking about)

Advance Wars (GBA) - I attempted the "Enigma!" stage again, and got much further than I usually do, but I'm still a ways away from beating it. It doesn't help that I don't really have gaming time nowadays, what with finals and projects due. :( :(

Picked up the DMC collection. Just for DMC1. Because it was that good when I played it. If you will remember, my (damaged+used) copy fucking froze during the ending, and I got rid of it at EB for DMC3. This also makes the third time I've bought DMC3, and twice for buying Special Edition. O_o I'll have to ditch the extra DMC3 for something eventually. I'll force myself to play through DMC2, since I have it now.

I'm still playing WoW, just not a whole lot each day at the moment. It's holding my interest mainly due to the size of the world and freedom you have to explore it. I've had very little interaction with other players at this point, though.

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute!

I've just been playing a little more Final Fight 2.

I don't know how much I want to post about it right now. I guess there are a few other things I'm trying to learn about it.

It does seem like a really long game. Well, it's only 6 stages long, and if you looked at the maps of the stages (like old-school Nintendo Power-style), they'd probably only take a couple of pages total.

Yet because it takes so long to kill every enemy, the game just takes forever. I don't know if saying it feels like 2 hours to play through is an exaggeration, but it might not be.

I was laughing at the Grimmora X Geo article (namely the part about the representations of bodies in another dimension) and my mother wanted to see what I was laughing at, but as much as I told her she wasn't going to get it she wanted to see, and sure enough, she didn't get it.

I don't want to spoil what's in the article for anyone who hasn't read it, but I can't get over that album cover.

I reached level 11 in World of Warcraft. I'm still working on quests in Elwynn Forest (http://www.worldofwar.net/cartography/worldmap/elwynnforest.php), but I'm probably going to start exploring Westfall (http://www.worldofwar.net/cartography/worldmap/westfall.php) after a couple more level ups. Can't get over the fact that there are a few dozen areas this size.

Quote: I was laughing at the Grimmora X Geo article (namely the part about the representations of bodies in another dimension)

Thanks! I thought the funniest part was the part with the emoticons. I really played off of Christopher's oblivious nature with that sketch. I'd hate to toot my own horn, but once I thought that joke up, I was laughing so hard, I had difficulty concentrating on the rest of the script. I also thought it was funny that just because they dressed as Final Fantasy characters for Halloween, they went around beating up every kid who was dressed as an Imp.

I was worried that those sketches wouldn't work as well as standalone articles on the site as they do on a message board, but I actually think some things work out better. I thought it was funnier in the "Greatest Discovery" article when Christopher said, "I'm not so bad-looking myself. What you do think?" than it was on the forums because of the difference in the profile pictures. Picturing him saying that while making the ridiculous face in his site picture made me laugh, whereas it didn't make me laugh when I posted it to the forums.

I was also lucky that I was able to locate that picture of Arnold for the Yuku article, because the whole thing sort of hinged on it. Crawl suggested I could've just Google searched another picture, but I couldn't find that one on Google images, and no picture of Arnold that I've seen that isn't photoshopped or doesn't have special effects from a movie evident is more ridiculous than that one.

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute!

I found some weird comments about Final Fight 2.

Google search it, and this site (http://www.blood-sports.net/history/articles/finalfight.shtml) is one the front page. They have this to say about the game:

Quote: Due to the success of the arcade Final Fight, Capcom created a SNES port and titled it “Final Fight 2”, as they took out Guy. Other than that, the game was largely more or less the same, but didn’t quite have the sting in the tail that the Arcade version did. To make up for the lack of Guy in Final Fight 2, Capcom released “Final Fight Guy”, with… you guessed it… Guy in it instead of Cody. By this time people were starting to care less and less about Final Fight. So good old Capcom did what they do best and released another sequel.

This is just about completely wrong.

From a Gamefaqs faq, regarding the second boss:

Quote: His first and most primary attack is a bullcharge which makes your jump attacks useless. So don't bother jump kicking him. Secondly, he also has a grapple move, and an aggressive blunt striking attack. The best strategy is to get above/below him, then quickly blunt strike as you move down/up towards him. Get him stunned, move in for a grapple, and repeat. You can also combo him down. Just don't jump strike him.

Actually, the jump kick will knock that boss out of his charge, so it's certainly not worthless. In fact, the other faq at that site even mentions this:

Quote: This guy mainly resorts to a lame charging attack that does WAY more damage than it should. Defeat his cronies and keep him down with a jumping attack while you're at it.

Jump attacks will work on just about every boss (including the final one), except maybe Rolento.

I observed something sort of interesting with that boss last night.

Anyway, Easy and Normal modes of this game are pretty easy. Hard and Expert, somewhat less so, though I have a hypothesis that this is just because those modes are more intended to be played two-player (most of what "challenge" seems to exist seems to be of the attrition variety). If not, might that mean the game might have earned ever so slightly more respect in my eyes? Maybe, but that would kill my desire to review it, because if it got a boost to 1 1/2 stars, then that score is not under-represented among my current reviews.

But the real question for now is, if I assume those difficulties are for two-players, how can I test that? I don't think FO is terribly interested in putting more time into this game. Well, I think the game is rather mindless, so I decided to have a mindless 2nd player: A controller with autoturbo. I just have to move the other character forward manually between fights.

Well, during the 2nd boss fight, I set that character up near the top of the screen, facing left, punching rapidly. The boss (and his cronies) kept rushing at her, but her rapid punches knocked them out of their attack. She ended up taking off about 75% of the boss's health by herself, without taking any damage up to that point. And she wasn't even controlled by a human being! Oh, yeah, and this was on expert mode.

Eventually, the fun did stop, as one enemy did a jumping attack that knocked her out of her combo. Still, it was sort of an amazing thing to see.

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute!

Well, I beat Final Fight 2 on Expert Mode.

Eh... This game is pretty much crap even then. I was wrong about the two player thing... sort of. The two players share their continues, so, well, I guess I could make a point about that, but whatever.

Anyway, the easy way to beat that mode still involves exploiting the two player mode. Basically, start the game single player. When you're about to die for your final time, hit start on the other controller, and take over with that character. Until that character is about to die, then switch back.

In two player mode, you instantly regenerate when you continue, but in one player mode, you go back to a checkpoint. So, that's the difference.

I actually screwed up once. When one character was about to die, and I switched to the other, I decided to try to have the other one still fight automatically, with the "autoturbo" switch turned on. But that made her automatically continue, so I had to keep them both alive simultaneously for a while. It was a mistake, but it didn't hurt me in the end.

I think it remains accurate to say "There's nothing in this game that can't be overcome with attrition." I developed a few strategies while taking on expert mode, but nothing all that interesting. On that subject, to go back to this...

Quote: Well, during the 2nd boss fight, I set that character up near the top of the screen, facing left, punching rapidly. The boss (and his cronies) kept rushing at her, but her rapid punches knocked them out of their attack. She ended up taking off about 75% of the boss's health by herself, without taking any damage up to that point. And she wasn't even controlled by a human being! Oh, yeah, and this was on expert mode.

...that was not a fluke. On the one player mode, I also did the same thing (got in that position, and held the turbo button down, and did nothing else), and the same thing happened. Eventually, once again, an enemy jumped onto the screen and hit me, but since I was controlling my character that time, I easily set the situation up again. I might have only taken that one hit during the battle.

Aside from that boss, the final boss might be the easiest in the game. Only he and Rolento (who might be the hardest) call in no re-enforcements. And he can be beaten with the straight-foward "jump kick in, get out" strategy.

I don't know if I ever had a good strategy for Rolento. I used the "desparation attack" a lot for him.

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute!

oh... so here's the game progress topic.

herzog zwei:
well... i finally beat the AI in another round of herzog zwei. after getting beaten yet another time. i beat it on the isle map again.the AI's defences were clue against gun boats. so was its "tranformer". i almost beat the AI in the earlier game on a mostly land covered map, since i took over most of the bases n did a decent job of defending the base it was trying to take over. but i guess i spent too much time taking over bases n not defending my main base. heck.

Civ 4:
played the american war of independence mod. 1st i played as the british, which sucked. the entire game made it almost impossible for the british to win. the most annoying thing was that everytime i sent my troops to attack an american city, they get free extra units due to rebel uprising ("the british are coming, the british are coming!"). that sucks monkey ass, esp since the more troops i send, the more free units they get! and as if that's not bad enough, half way through the game, both the french and spanish will be permanently at war with you. i've tried making peace with them, but as soon as the next turn starts, they'll declare war again! and barbarians are siding with the americans as well! now , i'm playing the american side, which is so much more easier. their cities have more buildings to begin with, and also land improvements. and although their riflemen are weaker, they can be built in almost half the time. minutemen are even faster to built.

So I bought a new cell phone tonight. "Virgin Mobile Oystr". Signed up for the 14.95 per month plan, which gets you 100 minutes. I think it'll end up being cheaper than the Tracfone. I've been playing Kirby's Dream Land 3 in preparation for something for my site and I noticed something strange.

http://www.flyingomelette.com/ezboard/pap3/kirby4-4_2.gif

This enemy was giving off a very strong "Bebedora" vibe.

http://www.flyingomelette.com/arc4/screens/bebedorameetsmaru.jpg

The single eyeball and the tongue hanging out reminded me of Bebedora's hat and dress. And the Kirby boss is an umbrella. Bebedora's dress billows out like an umbrella. I've seen those umbrella enemies in other games, too, like Pocky & Rocky and Legend of the Mystical Ninja. So now I'm beginning to wonder if that creature was the basis for Bebedora's design...

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute!

It can't be a coincidence. It's too well-known of a thing in Japan:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kasa-obake

Quote: Karakasa (“‚ŽP, Karakasa? "Chinese umbrella"), or Kasa Obake, are a type of Tsukumogami, a form of Japanese Spirit that originate from objects reaching their 100th year of existence, thus becoming animate.

And Bebedora is an inanimate object that became animate due to a spirit (in her case a puppet, not an umbrella, although as I said, her dress is like an umbrella.)

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute!

Speaking of Kirby 3, Dire 51 pointed out on his website that it looks like Nago (the cat) is humping Kirby, but what he didn't mention is that if you duck down with the owl, it also looks like it's doing that. And if you use the broom powerup with Chuchu, Kirby's head is completely up Chuchu's ass. And perhaps the most blatant one of all is if you use the Fire powerup while sitting on Rick (the hamster). NextBillGates once said that Super Mario World had a lot of "humping action", but this game has way more.

Also, I either somehow miraculously never noticed this before, or did and completely forgot, but Nago's girlfriend is almost perfectly Switched at Birth with Kiini. Nago himself also looks like Kiini, but not as much as the female cat because she's pure white.

Also, Nago's back legs are so short, round, and stumpy (and he really doesn't have any "feet" to speak of), that it looks like he's shuffling along on his fat ass.

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute! (GPT DS9)

So I made it to level 12 in WoW and I've finally gotten started exploring Westfall. The scenery is quite different. I hope there's a similar amount of variety with the other areas I explore later.

There was a quest to kill a monster named Hogger that was designated as probably too difficult to complete solo. So I figured I'd skip it and maybe come back at a higher level for the sake of completion. But it happened that a guy playing a priest asked if I'd help him kill hit, so I figured I'd give it a shot. He kept me healed and I won without too much hassle. That was the most significant social activity I've done aside from FP showing me around that one time.

I'm having a pretty good time so far and I don't plan on cancelling. If I had some time off and wasn't so tired, I could see myself playing for two or three hours at a time.

I'm liking it so far.

Speaking of powering up the characters, the old owner left a save file that says Lv.82. It's tempting, but I think I'd rather play through the game myself than jump into the final area (and the save count only says 5. So, either they saved so many times it rolled over ala Final Fantasy Legend 2, or they were damn good).

I can't remember, it might only be a three digit number, and 1000 saves isn't unrealistic. Especially level 80-something, which IIRC might be twice what's required.

Right now, I'm watching I, Robot. Our library lets you borrow DVD's for a dollar each for a few days. They're widescreen and everything. The movie is fairly enjoyable so far, but what's better is watching it on my new monitor. Visually, it's the best home movie experience I've had.

EDIT: ISN'T UNREALISTIC

I believe that it's in a treasure chest in the Gaia's Navel dungeon... the cave you go through to reach the dwarves. I've always picked it up there the first trip... the game won't let you progress past a certain point without it, then?

I have a name, you know! I am Tropicallo, mighty pile of sentient fruits and plants! And my head kind of looks like a cartoon bird's if you use your imagination!

I finished I, Robot. It was a lot better than I expected. A good balance between action scenes and story development kept things from getting boring. There are parts of both that are laughably ridiculous, though.

I actually found Sonny to be a pretty interesting character and I enjoyed watching the other robots as well. They seemed more real to me (in a story sense, not a visual one) than most CG characters do.

From what I remember of playing Secret of Mana, the first few bosses in the game are the hardest and as you accumulate more magic spells they get easier until the very last one. At least that game looks pretty damn good.

I beat Little Nemo: The Dream Master over the weekend. I'm trying to catch up on some NES gaming.

I beat the two headed dragon with the help of Cobra Bracelets, and cleared the Pebblers out of Moogle Village. Then I tried getting access into the Sprite village, but I don't think I got the hint until after I turned the game off.

Actually, I wasn't asking about them, just noting something that made me go "Oh, okay". The King (I think) mentioned how they were related to Mana Beasts.

I'm sure they're a helluva lot smaller than a Mana Beast, though.

I think those are the things that Legend of Mana refers to as "Flammies", but that doesn't make sense because it's obvious King Matango just made that name up. Of course, nothing in Legend of Mana made any sense.

Legend of Mana also has a Tropicallo boss. It is a plant, and it's the one I mentioned as being somewhat difficult (it killed me about five times before I figured out a good strategy), but it doesn't look anything like the SOM version.

So, just as planned, I opened up the Wii today, weeks before Christmas. Just as planned, yep. It wasn't that difficult, but probably the most complex console setup I've done, mainly due to some sensor bar issues. Wii Sports doesn't seem that thrilling. More to come.

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute! (GPT DS9)

I've played Zelda for like an hour and still haven't done a THING of consequence. Find the baby carriage that floated away, herd goats, look for a slingshot, save the cat, deal with the beehive, jump fences with your horse, "I made you a fishing rod but I don't have it with me right now", SHUT THE HELL UP and let me get on with saving your stupid world.

Another complaint I have is screen clutter. You've got your health in the usual spot, but there's a huge mini-map on the left, the thing that tells you what's set to each button is on the right, and the cursor if enabled is flying all over your screen as you move the remote. From the manual screens, it looks fine on a widescreen TV, but there is just too much crap in the way for standard def.

I'll talk more about the Wii system next.

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute! (GPT DS9)

Okay, so Zelda got a bit less crappy. Through a series of generally mundane activities, I obtained a slingshot, wooden sword, and lantern. Was able to do a mini-dungeon of sorts. There were some enemies treasures and the most simple of obstacles. It was fairly fun, though. I kind of like fighting with the Wii remote. I will never call it a Wiimote because that word makes my angry. Shaking the remote does a normal attack. Locking on and moving toward and enemy while shaking it does a stab attack. Locking on, running toward the enemy and pressing A does a jump attack. I don't think shaking is needed for that one. To do the classic spin attack, you shake the nunchuck instead of the remote. It'll probably get mundane after a while, but so far so good. The force feedback isn't bad, either. It's not super strong, probably because the thing runs on AA batteries, but that might be for the best.

I like the atmosphere of the game (and the graphics generally) a lot better than Wind Waker's. That said, it just doesn't seem to look as pretty as in the videos I watched online. Quite nice at times, but nothing that remarkable.

So as for the Wii itself, setting most of it up is just like any other system. I decided to place mine horizontally because I've never been a big fan of the vertical look and because it just seems less dangerous for the system. The trickier part was the sensor bar. Sometimes a TV remote will work if it's not directly pointed at the TV, but this thing has to be line of sight. If there's anything slightly in the way, it's gonna work badly or probably not at all. I found a place that works very well, though it might be a tad closer than recommended.

The controller(s) are pretty comfortable. Both parts are light and the nunchuck is almost weightless. The analog stick doesn't have as much stuff on it for grip and so it doesn't irritate my thumb like the Gamecube one does. I'd like to try out some GCN games on it, but you need a GCN controller for that and the cat ate mine.

Everything, from the system itself to the controller parts is smaller than I imagined. You can't get a good sense of it from the internet but you could probably get almost 4 Wiis into the space a 360 or PS3 takes up.

It's got one of those drives where you just push the CD into the slot, it pulls it inside, and there's no disc tray. Kinda nifty.

I thought I pointed out the Kiini/Nago resemblance a long time ago. I'm not certain, but I thought that was what made you go play the game. (Or maybe that's what made Kiera play it, I can't remember.)

I thought I'd give Legend of Mana a try out of curiosity, but so far, it seems rather boring and uneventful. And the play control is too slow. Not being able to face up or down really bites. It seems the idea was to try to make a sideview Final Fantasy battle completely controllable, but all it does is seem like a huge step down from the free-range movement in Secret of Mana (and other adventure games).

I honestly can't remember if I originally noticed it on my own or if someone pointed it out to me, but I did play Kirby's Dream Land 3 before I got on the internet. So, if I played it right after it was mentioned, it would've been a replay.

Panzer Dragoon Saga also used beat-em-up style life bars during battles, but at least the gameplay is nothing like a beat-em-up.

No, except that you have to fish to save the cat and the game does a poor job explaining how. Not to mention that saving the cat is more of a job for the cat's lazy owner than the Hero of Time's descendant.

I went out to get a new GameCube controller today and while I was there I picked up Mega Man X Collection and Thousand Year door. Everything works just like on a GameCube. Little panel on the side hides four controller ports and memory card slots.

The Wii gives you a report of what games or activities you played each day and how much time you spent on them. Doesn't work for the GCN games but it's moderately interesting.

I don't have any way of connecting to the internet right now without a wireless network. The USB thingy that helps the DS go online should work, but my room might be out of range from the room with the computer. There's going to be a device in January that should allow direct connection via cables.

What's the deal with that, anyway? Just trying to make the game longer so they can make claims of 60 hours of gameplay? Do people actually like doing less interesting things for hours because it makes the first dungeon seem more special? It's funny, I can't even remember what the first real dungeon in Wind Waker IS and I've played that part twice. Is it the fire one?

I remember thinking that the start of Ocarina of Time was a little tedious, but compared to the newer games, it pretty much throws you right into the Deku Tree dungeon.

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute! (GPT DS9)

I've played about 2 hours more of Twilight Princess and spent most of it in wolf form in the corrupted Twilight version of Hyrule Castle. Still no dungeon. I got a couple of Game Overs due to having 3 hearts and getting used to Wolf Link, but they were of little consequence.

There was a part where the Hyrule Castle theme plays and it brought on a wave of nostalgia. To a much lesser extent, hearing Epona's Song and the song from OoT when you're inside a house. Speaking of Epona, what are the odds of another Link owning another horse named Epona and calling her with the same song? Fate, I guess. Or writer laziness.

I've seen Zelda but not Ganon yet. However, there has been mention of a King of Twilight who has a pretty high probability of being him or working for him.

When you're in Wolf form, an interesting Twilight Realm character named Midna rides you and bosses you around a bit. I heard him called annoying by someone online, but I don't think so at all right now.

In Wolf form, you fight pretty much the same way and the commands do basically the same things, it just animates differently of course. Can't seem to use items, but you get other abilities, such as "animal sense" which allows you to see spirits, tell where things are hidden, etc. And you can dig and talk to animals.

So now I'm supposed to seek out three light spirits of Hyrule who had their light stolen from them. To regain Link's human form and to save Hyrule. This game is supposed to have a ton of dungeons so I guess something else happens after you accomplish this.

The story so far after that initial part in the town has been pretty dark. I was tempted to say the darkest in the series, but OoT's Hyrule Castle Town in the future among many other things keeps the game from seeming too lighthearted.

I think the idea of having a different Link rescue a different Zelda over and over is deeply retarded. I just think of all the games that have that story as being remakes / retellings of the original Zelda. That's sort of stupid and lazy, too, but it's infinitely better than "there just happens to be another Link that has the exact same things happen to him that happened to the other Links."

I think the basis for the "different Links" theory from the games themselves is pretty shaky at best, anyway. It's mostly fan speculation. The only hard evidence in favor of it is in a single line from the Zelda 2 manual.

Well, if Wind Waker is set after Ocarina which seems almost certain, then there are at least those two Links and Zeldas. According to the Wikipedia article, Ganon calls that Wind Waker Link a reincarnation of the Hero of Time. Of course, we could pretend Wind Waker doesn't exists and the world will be a better place for it.

Edit: I've also read that you can find a run down Temple of Time in Twilight Princess, so...

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute! (GPT DS9)

Yeah, I think the only clear direct sequels in the Zelda series are Zelda 2 which follows Zelda 1, and Majora's Mask which follows Ocarina (but Zelda 2 has the same hero as Zelda 1, and MM has the same hero as Ocarina, so that still doesn't support the multiple Link theory), and, yes, Wind Waker follows Ocarina, too, I guess.

But I don't think the hero of Wind Waker is ever called 'Link'. On the other hand, I'm not sure if ANY 'Link' is called Link outside of the manual and / or title.

I got Salamando in Mana, and got to the second orb in the Fire Temple that you have to cast Salamando's magic on, but Lemmy was out of MP.

Then I started Portrait of Ruin, and embarassed myself by running in several circles around the castle trying to figure out where the priest's store was because Wind wanted me to go buy some stuff from there... to find out it was right behind Wind. Then I beat the first boss on my second try. The game over screen is disturbing.

According to the manual, Death is a samurai in this game.

So I reached the first dungeon with 3 hours, 40 minutes on the clock (yes, they finally put a clock in). So, exaggeration, I suppose, as I don't see what you could spend another 80 minutes on.

Human form now, and apparently restoring the spirits is not what the dungeons are for. Instead, it's about finding a sealed dark power that should not be used by those of the light, but we're already pretty fucked, so might as well try it.

Oh, and I was told that I had the power of a great hero who had saved the land before and that the green tunic was his. So whatever.

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute! (GPT DS9)

DUNGEON 1 CLEARED

Doesn't sound like a big accomplishment but that was by far the longest and most complicated starting dungeon I've seen in the series. Also more fun than every decent part of Wind Waker combined.

It was the Forest dungeon, and much of it involved solving puzzles to free monkeys which would then help you get to more areas... which usually had more monkeys. The item here was the Gale Boomerang which has some nifty attributes like blowing out fires, and bringing things to you. What's cooler is that you can lock onto multiple targets and it will go through them in order. So you could have two or more targets. The boomerang hits the first target, picks it up, and delivers it to the second target. Or just hits things in the order that you designate. I'm keeping that fairly non specific. The remote works wonderfully for this, though.

Another dungeon feature, probably not exclusive to this place, is a different type of Bomb plant. In this game, it's a regular enemy that after being hit once, leaves the bomb part of itself behind. Pre lit.

The boss was actually the easiest thing in the dungeon by far. I won't go into how you damage it, but the first time was a little awkward to do properly. The second time, I felt I had the hang of it. Excited to try to damage it one more time, I saw that it had already died. Oh well.

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute! (GPT DS9)

It was said that the game is mostly free of time wasting quests, but I'm noticing a pattern start to emerge. Every time you encounter a new light spirit, you have to roam through an area using your wolf sense to hunt down invisible spiders. Maybe around 15, each containing some of the light that was stolen. It's true that there's usually a bit of complexity to finding them all, but these parts just feel kind of tacked on to make the game seem even longer.

Anyway, I've reached Twilightified Kakariko Village.

I won't even come close to hitting level 60 before the expansion comes out. Three weeks at home will contribute largely to that. Although the literal halfway point between levels 1 and 60 is 30 (29.5?), I heard, as far as time goes, 48 is more like the halfway point.

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute! (GPT DS9) I had to Sumo Wrestle a Goron. Link cheats by using Iron Boots. Somehow the Gorons don't notice him changing his boots right in front of them. So I've just walked into the second dungeon (fire, what else) and I've already got 8 hours on the clock.

I find it jarring to be exploring exactly the same areas and in much the same order from Ocarina of Time, but they all look completely different in terms of layout. It wouldn't be an issue if the style wasn't so similar. Okay, so let's say this takes place after Wind Waker and the world has been underwater for hundreds of years or longer, changing everything. So they happened to build another Kakariko village by another Death Mountain which happens to have been reinhabited by Gorons? Was there a Death Mountain in Wind Waker? I can't remember anything from that game, it's like my brain is cleaning out those memories.

Series connection silliness aside, it's actually a very enjoyable game so far. At this early stage, I would say that it has been worth the wait. Every time I turn it off and plan to stop for the day, it keeps coming back to mind until I end up playing again an hour later.

Cream Pie>>>Vampire Killer

Bought PoR. Played PoR. Beat PoR. The Final Bosss=awesome. I can say this is easily the hardest Castletroid ever. I still haven't beaten the Den of Evil area, and several bosses gameover'd me, some multiple times. (Gameover screen rocks though!) I refuse to rely on potions except for one instance, like where its NEEDED to win. There's one fight where you MUST spam potions. I found no other way to finish that battle other than tanking MMO-style. Despite that wretched instance, and the games apparent shortness, this is easily better Aria and Dawn of Sorrow, and CotM as well. No anoying pokesoul aspect, but some enemies drop the subweapon skills, but those enemies dropped them on the first or second kill for me.

It took me 13:37 hours (not counting time spent dying and stuff, obviously), almost nonstop to simply clear the game. I did know a few tricks and things before I got the game, and that probly cutdown my playtime alot. >_>

I still don't understand why the manual says Death is a samurai. He is slightly badass though. Slightly.

I got past two more battles in Kartia but lost again due to the blond-haired girl.

Anyway, I went back to my Legend of Mana file and finished out the quests involving Daena and Irwin. Irwin was easy to beat, but the area that led up to him was pretty damn long with no save points.

Yeah, there were stories of the controllers getting flung out of people's hands.

Although I think Reggie blaming it on people intentionally throwing it is lame.

Anyway, I beat Legion in PoR. Killed me twice when it went into that 100 Damage Flamethrower phase. I thought I could beat it easily by leaving part of the shell, but if you damage the core enough it sheds it on its own.

And that acid boss was retarded.

I beat the boss of the Egyptian stage. She has a specific name, probably the Egyptian verison of Aphrodite, but I'm just going to call her Isis. Anyway, I beat her on my first try by hitting her with two "1,000 Knives"s, then I thought "Okay, now how about I fight her the right way." She beat me once. The second time, I got in a lot of damage on her when I got pegged by her Charm attack, so I had to fight her with Charolette with Jonathan also attacking me... but then she died after I hit her once.

I did a lot on Portrait of Ruin. I'm sorry, but every time I type "PoR" I read it as "Path of Radiance".

I just beat Dagon (one game over, I didn't realize you could "swim") and got the Frog Morph spell. Then I got the Royal Sword from Wind for completing a quest before he even gave me the chance to select it.

This is a possible spoiler, so I'll black it out: IGA's version of Eric Lecarde might be the first time I actually liked what he did to a preexisting character. Most of them make me frown (Simon), and I'm indifferent about Alucard.

First, a Mystic Book showed me the naked woman AGAIN.

I still can't beat Nest of Evil in PoR. Cave Trolls/Chupecabras in the game can analy rape you in a few seconds, and there's a room full of 'em. And you can't leave rooms in Nest of Evil without killing ALL baddies in them. I got by this room once, but was promptly destroyed by Abbadon from Dos (several bosses from DoS show up in Nest of Evil. Aguni is now a pushover though).

Quote :Second, a glitch landed me with two Whip Orbs. I opened the chest, but then it respawned where I tossed it and I got to open it again.

This sometimes happens because the game is weird about how it gives you the weapon orbs. There aren't really enough in set locations to get every weapon to maximum power. You'll have to get the rest by beating enemies (usually in the final area) over and over again and hoping they drop a treasure chest that has it. But sometimes you can get more than one from the same chest.

Quote: Third, a Dark Ninja threw a shuriken that was a scrambled block.

This happens quite often and I think it has something to do with the amount of sprites that can be present on-screen at once. There's never more than three enemies, so when there are three enemies, your three characters, and maybe something else going on, like a magic spell or attack that uses a unique graphic, it can cause the graphics to glitch slightly. I've occasionally seen a Ninja throw a shuriken and it had no graphic for the shuriken at all.

Sometimes that's why you'll get one, but I'm almost 100% sure there aren't enough preset orbs to give you the maximum (or even one below the "true" maximum) amount for each weapon. The last ones you just have to win randomly.

Re: Cream Pie>>>Vampire Killer

Well, I did start Ocarina of Time. FO's gold copy, which is the version I'm playing, had my old file from New Jersey, but I decided to start the game from scratch because I didn't think I remembered much about it.

It did take me about an hour to reach the Deku Tree, but that was because

a) I forgot how to get the sword and

b) since I forgot that, I explored the lost woods, eventually getting through (all of?) it by trial and error.

The game does seem maybe too open at the beginning in that regard.

After that, I beat the Deku tree, which took me another hour. I don't know how much I remembered from that dungeon. The thing is, most of the puzzles from that dungeon (which include lighting torches and shooting an eye) are from other Zelda games, so I would have known how to solve them if I forgot them from Ocarina proper.

I did get stumped a bit by the eyeball in the Darkworld dungeon in ALttP, so I have to wonder if I never played that game if I could have gotten stuck on the first dungeon in Ocarina. On the other hand, maybe Navi would give a clue (and consequently ruin the ALttP puzzle).

The one thing that's sort of new in that dungeon is jumping through the spider web to get to the lower level. The weird thing is, I tried that about 5 times before it worked. That's a funny thing about some Nintendo games: You might be misled into thinking a puzzle's solution is wrong, because it doesn't seem to work. I'm pretty sure something like that happened in Super Metroid, when I used the super bomb in the tunnel. The thing is, in that case, after it seemed like that didn't work (I must have left the screen before the tunnel exploded) I assume it didn't work, and didn't try it again for quite a while.

Anyway, I'm leaving off there tonight.

I've said it before, but I think Alundra 2 had one of the best opening stages for an adventure game that I've seen in the past few generations of games. It's not a great stage, but as a "tutorial" stage, it's probably one of the best ways one could've been done. First of all, you start off in a unique setting (aboard the pirate's airship), and Flint is already doing what it is that he does. It's not just a retread of "normal boy wakes up in hometown while nothing is happening". And because it's an airship, the hallways are narrow and straightforward. You aren't dropped into the middle of a giant open field with no idea what to do or where to go. Each room teaches you a certain move (how to run, how to jump, etc.), but it's very brief about it, and then a short time later it culminates in two back-to-back boss fights.

Re: Cream Pie>>>Vampire Killer

I played a little more Ocarina of Time this morning.

So, last night I left off after clearing the Deku tree. Today, I went to Hyrule and found Princess Zelda. I went to Lon Lon Ranch and got a bottle from Talon from the chicken game, and met baby Epona. I went back and forth between Hyrule and Kakariko village to give the soldier the Keaton mask and get the big shield (which is apparently useless as child Link). I got the Sun Song (I don't know if I got that the last time I played), and went back to the Lost Woods and got Saria's song. I also got two heart container pieces from the skull kids there. And I can carry more Deku Branches, and Deku seeds.

I went to Goron village and got the bracelet that lets me grab bomb flowers. So, I left off for now in the Dodongo Caverns. That's where I left off when I played the game in New Jersey.

Anyway, it's sort of neat, as a person who played Majora's Mask first, to see some characters from that game. Malon, who you have to save from aliens in the first one, is here. Well, so are a lot of other ones, but what was neat in MM is that you often had some miniquest involving the characters, which made them a bit more memorable. I'm not sure if some of those characters are just background in Ocarina, but either way I'll have an easier time remembering them now.

Re: Cream Pie>>>Vampire Killer

Anyways, I have been playing some of Mega Man X on the GCN collection. I've played it a couple times before but it's been quite some time since I really tried to clear it.

The Cube's controller works better than I thought it would. I've beaten half the bosses... Chill Penguin, Sting Chameleon, Storm Eagle, and Flame Mammoth. These guys are seriously wimps. All except for Storm Eagle I beat with the X Buster. Very easily. I could've beat Eagle with it too, but I had the right powerup to use on him and I figured I might as well use it.

On that note, would you guys not consider a Mega Man game really beaten unless you clear it with the X Buster?

I'm going to see if I can finish Dungeon #2 in Twilight Princess tonight or at least make some progress. It seems that the Big Key is split up into 5 parts, each held by a Goron elder in shrines throughout the dungeon. Hey, if they like sitting inside a volcano surrounded by terrifying monsters, who am I to judge?

Re: Cream Pie>>>Vampire Killer

Yay, I completed the fire dungeon! Man, these are some seriously long dungeons. I probably spent an hour and a half on it, and I wasn't really stuck for a long time on any puzzles. It's only the second dungeon, remember.

So it actually had some pretty cool stuff in it. I've had the iron boots for a while, but this dungeon introduces magnetic surfaces, so you can be walking along the walls and ceilings to reach new areas. I also got the bow and arrow, which doesn't do anything too out of the ordinary, except for shooting ropes to make things fall. Though aiming with the remote is kinda cool. They mentioned that the bow belonged to the Hero of the Past, so I'm feeling almost certain that this game is set after Ocarina of Time (and presumably Wind Waker), but very far in the future.

This dungeon had a mid boss. I lost to it a few times because I couldn't figure out how to damage it, just make it start rolling at me. The dungeon boss was fun to fight while it lasted, but it was also extremely easy.

So there's this creature that you can use as an item in this game to warp out of a dungeon to buy stuff or whatever. When you're done, you can warp right back to the room you left off on. If you quit and turn off the game, I think you have to start from the entrance again. So it came in handy today because I wanted to go out and buy some milk (what, I'm not falling for that artificially made potion crap, it's natural solutions for me) and a new shield because mine got burned to cinders.

So now I've got two of the shadow items that Midna wants so badly. One more to go. After that, I don't know what the goal is going to be. I accidentally ran into a spoiler about Midna which is a little disappointing (running into the spoiler, not the contents of the spoiler), but there's still a ton I don't know about the overall story. They mentioned the King of Twilight, and he had some name that wasn't Ganon. So it'll be interesting to see how they introduce him, unless he's just in disguise. My hunch, based on no actual evidence is that Ganon is going to be the enemy of both light and twilight and that the two will have to fight him together.

I have to say that I'm having a pretty awesome time with this game so far. I'm not ready to say that it beats out Ocarina, but this is the Zelda game I've been waiting for these past 7 years.

I basically did some piddling around in Castlevania to get my levels up.

I was fighting Dodos for a while because I thought they had the Club card which I need for a quest; it had a second, two-star item, and all the other cards were a monster's two-star item, and all the other cards came from more silly monsters, like the Killer Clown, the skeleton that's kicking its head around and that nurse demon thing. However, after about half an hour of doing that (because of the nature of the Dodo, I was killing maybe one a minute; half an hour fighting, 30 Dodos) I decided to go to GameFAQs to see if the Dodo even had the card. Well, GameFAQs didn't have much, but they at least had the answer to my question. It was another monster that I didn't think of because it wasn't a silly monster. Bah.

Re: Cream Pie>>>Vampire Killer

Twilight Princess has names like that for the bosses, too. I've beaten:

"Twilit Parasite -- Diababa" and "Twilit Igniter -- Fyrus"
Twilit=correct spelling.

Man, as for Link to the Past versus Ocarina, that's a tough call. LttP was a very important game for me back in the day and I had a ton of fun with it. The interactions between Light and Dark worlds was great, seemed just amazing at the time. Though it was an early SNES game, I really liked the visuals, and there were just so many dungeons to explore. I think it was one of the first great games I played for the SNES.

On replays though, it doesn't seem to feel as substantial as Ocarina does. I was astonished at how fast I was able to clear it the last time I tried. Without playing both games again, I'm not sure how much of it is just my mind playing tricks on me, but Ocarina feels like it just has a lot more content, and consistently excellent content at that. It's a game world I love exploring and being in.

Ocarina brought the series to three dimensions in a way that really worked, and the visuals hold up surprisingly well today, which I think is difficult for early 3D titles. The 3D also allowed for some really interesting new dungeons.

It's also got some of the most memorable game locations for me. Forest Temple, for example was one of my favorite places to explore in a videogame. And I can still see so much of the Water Temple in my head with amazing clarity even though it's been a couple years now at least. I think as you get older, games don't excite you in quite the same way, and this might have been the last game to really do that for me.

In Twilight Princess tonight, I've been exploring Twilight Zora's Domain, at the point where I have to kill the bugs to restore the area to light. I'd be stunned out of my mind if the next dungeon is anything but a water one.

This is the slowest going Zelda yet in terms of reaching new dungeons (11 hours and haven't reached #3 of 9) and so would probably not lend itself as much to replays. But I'm finding it highly engrossing. The world gets bigger with each sequel, but Hyrule here is absolutely massive. While I don't feel as much at home in the world as in Ocarina, I'm finding it a fascinating place to explore and I'm highly curious about what's going to happen next. More than the other games, there's a lot of information about the overall story situation that's kept from you in this one.

Castlevania: Finally unlocked the Vampire Killer with about 30 HP to spare. I actually got most of it done without taking any damage, then blew my rhythm when he pulled out the Holy Water. I get the feeling endings 2 and 3 depend on if I beat the final boss with it or something else.

Mana: I rose the lost continent (man, that song is creepy), and got through a portion of the dungeon, then ended up taking a wrong turn down a one-way jump and was where I was some time earlier. I backed out and saved.

Is that the one where Starfleet leaves the station? That's one of the best. But "Sacrifice of Angels", the battle to retake DS9, is something to look forward to, too. Then you've got "In the Pale Moonlight", which some consider the best episode not to far after that... very dark. Not too long after that, you'll be coming to the last season, which is good, but I didn't find it as great as the previous few. It's got it's moments, though.

I had a game going whose intention was to fact-check the line "While Legion or Balore may be fought in either order, there is less true nonlinearity than in SotN." I was 99.99% sure that was true anyway, but now I've played a game up to that juncture, copied it, and then on either file fought those bosses in either order.

Another reason to start the game from scratch again (I've also beaten Hard and Julius mode before) would be to get more data on the number of souls aquired through playing normally. I reckon about 40% is typical. I got a little more than that my first time through, and have a little less than that now.

I'd really like to make a big push to get this review finished in '06, since that was the year of the apartment fire mentioned in the review.

Quote: BTW, what'd you use to unlock the VK power? Burtue powar? The favorite methods are Cream Pie (it works!) and mastered shuriken.

My weapon of choice was the Royal Sword (most powerful thing I had), and my strategy mainly involved the Knife and the Griffin Wing.

Re: Cream Pie>>>Vampire Killer

I was too tired to play Zelda last night, so I decided to mess with Mega Man X some more. I cleared all the regular stages and found two health extenders. I know where two more of the health ones are, but I couldn't get to them at the time. I have no clue where the remaining armor upgrades are... no spoilers, please. After that, I booted up X6 out of curiosity. Maybe it will turn out to be shit as everyone seems to think, but it's fairly impressive looking.

Re: Cream Pie>>>Vampire Killer

I did some stuff in Portrait of Ruin, like Mastering the Javalin so I could get an item, then copied my file and started a New Game+ in Portrait of Ruin, but got kind of tired almost instantly. I'm going to need to do what I did with the two Sorrows, and just shelve the game for a while before I go through with this. Maybe I'll give the Nest of Evil a shot, but right now I have a Mana Beast to go find and slay.

Re: Cream Pie>>>Vampire Killer

I played a little more Ocarina of Time.

I got a new heart container: The pieces of heart came from the Zora's area, and the Bombchu Bowling game. I got another bottle. I beat the diving game (easy) and got the Zora scale. And I got another bottle, and entered Jabu Jabu. Oh, yeah, I also found two other great fairies. I think that might be it.

Not sure if you'll feel the same, but I remember Ocarina having somewhat of an increase in entertainment value once you get to play as Adult Link. The dungeons and atmosphere are just much better.

Re: Cream Pie>>>Vampire Killer

Well, I finished Jabu Jabu.

Of course, I'm sure everyone else knows this by now, but this is the dungeon where

a) At first, you mostly have to run away from enemies, since attacking them will hurt you (it is possible, however, to kill the jellyfish -- but apparently not the worms -- with fire magic)

b) where you have to carry Princess Ruto around for a while. It's rather like a very simplified version of some Secret of Evermore puzzles. Once again, though, this encourages running from some enemies, since you can't fight while you're carrying her.

c) where you get the boomerang.

d) Where you fight an octopus miniboss.

I didn't figure out a good strategy for this guy. Apparently, you have to hit him with the boomerang, which stuns him, then hit him in the back with your sword. However, he runs in circles, and you're not fast enough to catch up to him. If you go the other way, you can throw the boomerang at his face. But then he'll be stunned with his face towards you, so you won't be able to get to his back.

My solution? Take a sacrifice hit. After hitting you, he'll run away in the other direction. Then you have a brief instant where you can hit him in the back with the boomerang.

It might not be ideal, but it worked.

Anyway, I might slowly leak some subjective opinions. First, I'm not overly wild about the graphics. The game looks muddy and monochromatic. Hyrule field in particular looks muddy. There's some green, but it feels muted compared to the brown. And Jabu Jabu is pretty much entirely and unpleasantly red. I think the prerendered backgrounds (fortunately used sparingly) were a bad idea. Those parts make the game feel like it has "Playstation envy" -- especially since they too are lacking in detail, aren't colorful, and might even be sort of blurry.

It seemed like Majora's Mask was a more colorful game.

Ignoring aesthetics, the game is okay technically compared to other N64 games: I don't see much (any?) polygon flicker, textures aren't much more blurry than any non-expansion pack game, there is a real attempt at making the graphics not only convey information but also evoke atmosphere, and most graphics during gameplay do not have conspicuously edged features. On the other hand, facial expressions are a weakness of the game.

And I'd like to punch people who think games should have more voice acting. I'm sick of what there is in this game. Link's high-pitched scream is very annoying, as is Navi's "LISTEN!!" (I don't think the Majora's Mask fairy did that).

I know you hate VG Cats, but still, I feel obligated:

http://www.vgcats.com/comics/images/021206.gif

Twilight Princess as I mentioned in the other thread, doesn't seem to be too annoying as far as voice effects. It's funny, but I can't seem to remember if Link screams when he falls. It seems highly likely, but I can't for the life of me remember what it sounds like. Midna talks a nonsensical language that sounds a little like something being played or spoken backwards. Even if it were though, it's probably Japanese anyway. Her attention grabber for when she has something to say is a laugh/giggle.

Re: Cream Pie>>>Vampire Killer

Here's Midna talking. The graphics are washed out because Zora's domain hasn't been saved from Twilight yet.

I'm pretty sure she's the only character that actually talks in that sense of actually having a full sentence worth of audio for every line. Other people are probably just occasional noises or whatever, like in Ocarina.

I beat Kettle Kin in Mana. Er... did part of the ground surface when I did that, or was that path from the top of the palace to the door at the bottom always there?

I've never had a strong feeling towards fictional fiction. >_>

I've got almost everything in PoR except 2 items on my item list. I've got 1,000% MAP, all quests beaten, all monsters and thier drops recorded (a first!), all subweapons mastered. I just need to find those items. I have no idea where they could be, since I've gotten all rooms filled and all the drops. Rrrr!

Its surprisingly easy to do in this game. I wasn't even trying on purpose, except for the last few enemies, which were enemies towards the start of the game. The baddies drop items and skills like its going out of style.

I don't know for certain, but maybe half of them, only a few of them with the "Soulemon" Method of running into a room, killing something, running back out, and doing it again.

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute! (GPT DS9)

There's a trick to make his second form a lot easier, but I won't tell you what it is. :)

Got a bit done in Mana. I got my wish; the chest thing happened with one containing a sword orb. Anyway, I raised the Mana Fortress, then visited the Mana Tree.

Quick Question: When the tree said the women of the Mana Tribe/Clan become the tree, did she mean they eventually fuse with it, or does the tree constantly die and another woman has to come take its place?

I'm leaning towards the latter, but want confirmation. Only one voice was talking to Randi/Crono, and referred to itself as "I". But it could have just been her voice out of many talking to him.

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute! (GPT DS9)

Oh man, how did I forget this? When I first went to the Pure Land, everything was kicking my ass. The Griffin Feet were doing, like, 300 HP damage to me. So, I found Neko on the Lost Continent and bought some gear from him (insane price, but I had the money), increased my Body and Head defenses by about 100 each, and my Arm defense by about 70 (for this one, I had an outdated item for it, but it protected from status ailments so I just kept it) ... and then the enemies could barely do squat to me!

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute! (GPT DS9)

So I took a break from Mega Man to play some more Twilight Princess. Okay, so I've said that I like the game, but those who say that there's nothing to artificially increase the length of the game are just fanboys or easily amused. I just restored Zora's domain and surrounding areas to the light by killing the insects again. It must have taken an hour to an hour and a half of wandering around, looking for places to jump up, figuring out how the areas connect, and actually killing the stupid things. The only good part was a semi boss battle with a giant version of these bugs. Hopefully that concludes this aspect of the game with all three light spirits restored.

I was rewarded though by a pretty interesting and somewhat creepy scene where the spirit tries to tell Link about how the kind of power he's seeking can corrupt him.

I made it to the Mana Beast, and it kicked my ass. I'm going to need to level up Dryad so that Mana Magic lasts more than five seconds.

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute! (GPT DS9)

I didn't have time to play much Ocarina of Time, but I did play a very little bit.

I think the first thing I did was finish up the bombchu game. I had already gotten the piece of heart, but I missed the bomb bag. But once I got it, it turned out to be equivalent to the one I already had. :/

I had gotten the three spirit stones previously, so tonight I went forward in time. I went to Kakiriko Village and got the song of storms (which is sort of a time paradox), and also learned why I couldn't reach the other two cuccoos before. The reason? I don't usually talk to shop keepers, because it's boring, but when I finally did talk to the potion shop keeper, he gave me a clue.

Oh, and I beat the arrow game. But all it got me was some rupees, I think. So, it was pointless.

I think that's really all I did tonight.

Re: Offer your souls! Pay ME tribute! (GPT DS9)

I did a whole bunch of things in Twilight Princess today, but still no 3rd dungeon after 13 hours of play. After restoring Zora's Domain and figuring out how to get the heck back out of it again, I headed to Hyrule Castle Town. Because the Zora prince is there and he needs to be taken to Kakariko for medical treatment. So I had to escort their horse drawn wagon and fight off crap the whole way. Some aspects of it were fun, but the horse controls are a little difficult to manage while fighting. As a reward, I gained the Zora Armor. It's a Blue Tunic basically, but it's got some other graphical differences. And it actually carries a weakness... more damage done by fire attacks. So now I have to go find the water dungeon. Actually, there are bombs that work underwater for sale now, but I'm not sure if I need to buy them or if I'll get them in the dungeon anyway. Probably the latter.
