Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

Lunar Legend: Level 2, in the Weird Woods at the beginning of the game. I also watched the deleted scenes from Star Trek Nemesis, and some of them should have been left in. The reason for removing one in particular struck me as pretty stupid.

I'm really just making this topic so I can go upload the old one while I have the chance... sorry it's slightly early.

Edit: That topic is now archived.

I got to disc 2 in FF8, in Dawn of Sorrow, I am all the way up to this boss that throws insects at me. He's kicking my butt, so I think I go collect souls, work on my weapon collection, and in the process get some levels. I also used the soul I got from killing death to make the Death Scythe. It's really powerfull, although I don't know if it has a bonus to collecting souls like in Aria of Sorrow.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

I don't know what it is about Lunar, but I just like it in any form. I made it through the Weird Woods to the White Dragon Shrine. What's different in this version is that the shrine isn't a dungeon... you just go right in and talk to the dragon. And the Weird Woods are more complex, I think. You have to find these three bits of writing in different parts of the woods and then put them in the right order to open the way to the shrine.

Once you reach the dragon, he looks into the hearts of Nash and Alex (who has decided to undergo the trial as well). I like this change to the story, with Nash wanting to be a Dragonmaster, too. The bit about the shrine not being a dungeon might be how it was originally on the original versions of Lunar (pre-PS1).

BTW, other differences are that there's no overworld in this version (the overworld on the PS1 version was kind of limited anyway, as I recall). Also, you can't see enemies before you fight them... these are true random battles. Also, characters have the equivalent of limit breaks now.

I miss the better presentation of the PS1 version of the game, but the GBA version seems like a pretty good choice for those who don't want to spend that much. At this point, it does, anyway.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

I stand by what I said about the story in this version of Lunar being well written, but it apparently wasn't proofread enough. I've seen several errors so far.

After the festival in Burg, the next destination is the town of Saith. I think that in SSSC, all you had to do was one boss battle on the ship there. In Legends though, the pirate ship is a mini-dungeon with random battles with pirates, unavoidable battles with pirates, and then a boss battle with the pirate captain. I seem to recall that the boss was a slime in SSSC, but I could be wrong on that.

The pirates were tougher than I would've expected for random battles, but I'm well equipped and leveled, so there was no trouble. I had been saving those limit breaks and made good use of them during the boss battle.

Following the battle, the party arrives in Meribia, which is where I stopped for today.

I guess I was wrong about the voice acting. Seems the only clip in the game is of Luna singing, "La, la, la, la, la, etc., etc.". And she only does it about every 5 seconds.

I've had to listen to the soundtrack for the PS1 version after playing. I enjoy the songs on the GBA, especially since I haven't heard them in a long time, but the low quality distracts me a great deal. I miss the vocal songs, too.

Funny, I feel like talking about this game more than anything I've played in a while.

I'm up to the third world in Donkey Kong Country 2 already. I forgot how much I liked this game. I hope I can actually finish it this time.

I might also start another RPG because I can usually switch between playing an RPG and an action game at the same time. I just can't switch between two action games and two RPGs at the same time.

The NES Willow game is another one I've never beaten so maybe I'll try that.

I've been playing Final Fantasy 2 (4j) and I'm as far as where you fight the four fiends in the Giant of Bab-il, but I'm having a hard time beating them. I get as far as the wind fiend before I get wiped out, and I'm usually wiped out on the water fiend. I might need to walk around inside the giant a bit to raise my levels.

Lunar Legend...

First of all, I looked at some screenshots of SSSC so that I could compare the graphics of both versions. And surprisingly, I actually prefer the look of Legends. The character sprites are much larger and more detailed in battle. It's a really big difference. The actual environments look better on the PS1, but not enough to make that version the clear winner.

Anyway, the dragon diamond theft and trip to the sewer went pretty much like I remember from SSSC, except I think the dungeon layout was different. The boss was no challenge... I just used Vigor on Alex then Sword Dance over and over until I won. I had the best equipment and was in no danger at all.

After this is when things got a little weird, unless my memory is just terrible. Nash rejoins the party and everyone decides to go to Vane (Alex seems more interested in learning magic than before, I think). Anyway, something happens during the transport and they end up in a strange place labeled Sub-Vane, and Nash says that the magic that powers the transporter is being diverted to something nearby.

That's where I left off. I might play a little more later, since I'm curious about what happens when they actually get to the city.

I thought this would be a lousy port, but I'm totally impressed.

BTW, I guess it's been mentioned a lot, but I think it'd be neat to have a Lunar prequel featuring the original 4 heroes (Ghaleon, Dyne, Mel, and whoever else it was.)

I decided to pick up that Capcom Arcade collection and I already finished Section-Z and Final Fight on it. I played some of Commando, but I think I might actually like the NES version more. Tried Gun.smoke and only got to the boss of the second stage.

I tried three or four times to beat that Tyrant boss in RE0, but couldn't do it with the shotgun. I had to run back and get the Magnum and a combination of that and the handgun finally brought him down.

I also figured out that the Tyrant you fight there is the same Tyrant you fight again later on. If you go into the elevator then come back out into the same room, you'll notice the Tyrant's body is gone and a hole has been ripped through the back wall.

The Sub-Vane area wasn't too challenging, but it could be annoying at times. The random encounter rate was especially high, and the layout was on the confusing side. Eventually, I made it to this mist boss, which you have to fight without Luna. There really wasn't much strategy I could use. Just Vigor and Sword Dance with Alex while Nash used recovery items. It had a lot of HP but I made it. I was not pleased to find that I had to walk back through the dungeon to leave. At least I gained several levels and lots of gold, though.

Afterwards, a quick trip to a nearby shrine to Althena, then a teleport to Vane, which I'm exploring now. Luna met Ghaleon. His non-battle sprite was a little weird looking, I think.

Just one other random thing... I purchased a Fire Rod on Black Rose Street in Meribia, intending to use it as an item, not equip it. But it boosts Nash's attack power enough that he's almost as useful as Alex as a fighter right now.

Aside from Lunar, I put the Revenge of the Sith DVD in and watched Palpatine scream UNLIMITED POWER. I really did.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

I just beat Resident Evil 0 on hard, and I'm still trembling a bit because the last part made me very nervous. I was extremely low on ammo on the final part of the Leech Queen, although technically you don't beat her by shooting at her...only by distracting her so that Rebecca can open the ceiling hatch.

On my first attempt against her, I got to the final form, but something happened that I never saw happen in this game before. The Leech Queen trapped Billy and Rebecca against a staircase and I couldn't get either of them away from her. As soon as they'd stand up, the Queen would knock them right back down again, "Record of Lodoss War" style. On my second atttempt, I was extremely careful not to allow the Queen to move into that area before Rebecca opened the hatch that's over there.

What's funny about that final part is that Rebecca was holding all the healing items while Billy had all the guns and ammo. Whenever I needed to heal Billy, I had to wait until Rebecca made a running pass by me and quickly switch to the subscreen to exchange items.

I'll have to rethink what score I'm going to give this game as I do think Normal and especially Hard were a lot more satisfying than the Easy mode was. Easy was almost too easy. I got to the end with so much ammo, weapons, and save ribbons left over there's no way I'd ever use them all. And I think I killed every single monster in the mansion, whereas on Normal and Hard, I skipped quite a few things.

However, there is really no way you could play Hard without first playing Easy and Normal unless you were willing to start over many times. There are a lot of situations in which you'll have to know what's coming so you can properly prepare both characters.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

I had earlier said that I didn't think Resident Evil 0 had much of an Act 3. Well, on the Hard Mode, I think Act 3 is a bit more distinct. I'd definitely say it starts at the point where Billy falls over the railing and you have to play as Rebecca alone for quite awhile (which includes the first Tyrant boss fight.) It's easier to see this as an "Act 3" on Hard because it's definitely harder to survive that long as Rebecca alone than anything else in the game. And pretty much all the events from where you team up with Billy again lead to getting a security card that gives you access to the final boss room.

Oh, and I also experienced a new kind of death in this game. I got swallowed three times by a frog, which is an instant death even if you're at full health. Those giant frogs would leap out of the water every now and then on the Easy and Normal modes, but they never really did anything but annoy me for a few minutes before leaping back in.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

Okay, let's see. From Vane, I got sent to the fishing village to investigate rumors of a new Dragonmaster. Had to go through a little dungeon on the way, and also encountered Kyle at Nanza along the way. At the fishing village, Jessica joins for a while and you go to some island to fight the fake Dragonmaster.

Getting to the Dragonmaster was pretty simple. Occasionally, some treasure chests would have monsters inside, which I haven't seen in the game until now. Nothing tough, though. For the boss, I used the same tactics as always.

With this done, I headed back to Vane and Jessica left the party. And yeah, you have to walk all the way back.

In Vane, Alex gets arrested and Luna is taken away. Mia joins the party, and you have to go to an off limits tower of the magic guild to rescue her. In this place, you can only use magic attacks and magic items. That made all the random battles pretty boring, but they still weren't that hard.

At the top of the tower, there's a battle with three enemies that seem strong to everything but fire element attacks. They couldn't really do any damage to you, so it's just a matter of figuring out how to handle them.

Now I'm supposed to meet up with Ghaleon at Meribia, then take him to see the white dragon.

The other day I took out my copy of Final Fantasy 6 and realized I had a file that hadn't yet completed the World of Ruin. It was just at the beginning, just after getting the Falcon. So, I've been playing that because I don't feel like starting over from the beginning. I got Cyan after climbing Mt. Zozo and I went and got Gau from the Veldt. Then I saved Shadow from the Cave in the Veldt, but I haven't gone to the Colloseum yet. I now have to work my way through Owser's House to get Relm.

Heh. Funny that I never even thought about that while I was playing. I guess Lunar on Sega CD came out before FF6, didn't it? Still, I suppose it's not that original of an idea, to restrict you on your weapons for a limited time. And since the tower is part of a bigger structure, it doesn't have the same feel as the one in FF6. Also, they let you use Alex's sword skills even when he's not equipped with a weapon. Apparently, he uses a magic sword... it's just easier when he has a real one. Okay, sure. And this is the guy who's said repeatedly that he has no magical ability whatosever?

The first time I made it to the top of the Fanatic's Tower was on emulator, and I couldn't figure out how to beat the Magimaster. So, I restarted from my last save, which was at the bottom of the tower, and did some other stuff. When I got the Phoenix esper, I used the Life 3 thing so he didn't kill me when he cast Ultima at the end.

When I finally got a cartridge, I got to the top of the Tower and realized I forgot the Phoenix Esper and hadn't saved for a very long time (heck, it might have even been back at the tentacles when I last saved), so I spent about an hour Rasping and Osmosing the bastard.

I didn't have the Moogle Charm nor did I know where to find it when I first played FF6. So I had to do the Fanatics Tower without it. I also either didn't have Life3 or didn't know what it was for, so I didn't use that, either. And I didn't know about the Osmose/Rasp trick, either. So it took me about 10-20 tries to beat that thing and when I did, Mog was the only one in my party who survived his Ultima spell with about 100 hit points left.

This took me about 8 friggin' times to get right:

Resident Evil Zero Ending Credits Theme
http://www.flyingomelette.com/mp3/re0-endcredits.mp3

My first few attempts turned out too distorted. Then the next few attempts were too muffled. Then on one attempt, I missed my cue and didn't hit the record button in time. It took a lot of fooling with the options in Sound Recorder to get this listenable.

I've been thinking about what I want to do next. I haven't played an RPG in so long, I'm in the mood for one again. I'm thinking Skies of Arcadia Legends since I already have the Gamecube out and set up...

Met Ghaleon at Meribia, then took a boat to Saith. Stopped by Burg (I like to see as much of the dialogue as possible, so I talk to everybody after pretty much all the plot events). Then went to see Quark, and Ghaleon did his evil emperor thing.

Then I ended up being teleported back to Meribia where monsters were attacking. It wasn't hard, but would have been easier if my sword hadn't DISAPPEARED. It was equpped, now it's not. And it's not in the inventory.

Jessica joined, and now I'm supposed to go back to the magic guild.

I'm also replaying Final Fantasy 1 with a party of two Red Wizards and two White Wizards. This won't be quite as hard as the time I beat it with four White Wizards.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

Started Skies of Arcadia Legends and I'm just about ready to go to Shrine Island to find a fallen Moon Stone.

Some observations:

From the artwork on the game's cover, I thought that Vyse and Aika would at least be around Kharg and Paulette's ages in Arc 4. It seems more like they're little kids. Crawl says it might just be because of the "cartoony" art style, but it's still difficult to see them as anything other than little kids. And I find it hard to relate to little kid characters anymore. That was one thing that was nice about Kartia is that almost everyone in that game was an adult. I know that I'm guilty of having "little kid" characters in Image Arcane, but Jack was a kid with the sensibility of an adult. The fact that he so often functioned as the voice of reason earned his place in the story. Vyse and Aika don't seem to have much personality so far.

Well, anyway, maybe I'll get used to the idea. The graphics of this game are a far step down from everything else I've played on the modern systems so far. The characters are nowhere near as well-animated as the characters in Arc 4 and the facial expressions aren't as good, either. Crawl reminded me that this is almost a direct port of a Dreamcast game, and I guess it really shows.

The battle system is unimpressive so far, but it sounds as though it could get more complicated later on from what I was told in the training center. Music is just mediocre, but the title theme was nice.

Vyse is wearing those same detached shirt sleeves that Kharg wears. Crawl said that's a female form of clothing. I responded that it's not as though I never made the observation that Kharg is dressed like a woman. He's wearing coulottes and a girdle, for pete's sake.

The villain looks like Richie Rich.

Any good news so far?

Well, for one thing, at least it actually delivers on the promise of a world of flying islands and ships that travel between them, unlike Castle in the Sky, which is where the inspiration for this game obviously came from.

Um...is this where Disney got the idea for Treasure Planet? Sure looks and sounds like it...

Graphics aren't great, but they're at least colorful.

Battle system is fast if not deep.

From what I recall, they really toned down the rate of random battles for the Legends version of the game. Which is why I was able to actually finish it on the Cube. There's some added content that wasn't there on the Dreamcast, but they really didn't work on improving the graphics for the port.

The game has it's moments, but I think of it as overrated.

Heh. Kind of ironic that I said that while posting with the name of a "little kid" character from Image Arcane. But even Starla was more interesting to me as a character than Vyse or Aika are so far.

But games often take time to grow on me. As such, I can understand why Crawl is having a hard time starting new games lately. Seems like a lot of modern games don't have a really good "hook" in the beginning. Skies of Arcadia seems overly self-enthralled with the idea of its giant ships that fly through the air and isn't really focusing on much else yet.

And once again I have to get used to a new control scheme (not as crucial for this game since it's not action-based, but I still end up running up against walls and not being able to get myself turned around and moving the right away sometimes.) Thank goodness this game has a map.

Halo is pretty boring a lot of the time. The sequel is a little better, but not one of my favorite games. That series is another one where people say "well, multiplayer's where the fun is at" if you tell them you don't like something about it.

Lunar Legend... After talking to random people in different towns for no real reason, I went to Vane and encountered another easy boss battle. Nash and Mia rejoined to fight it. Using the Meteo Rods as items did some extreme damage. Alex did sword dance as usual. I bought a new sword afterwards.

Learned that the red dragon is in some place south of Nanza, so I went there. Kyle joined the party along the way. Made it to the town of thieves, where the dragon wings (item that lets you warp to towns you'e been to) are stolen. So in order to get it back, you have to join the Thieves' Guild. This is because guild members can't steal from other guild members. I guess it's retroactive... something doesn't seem quite right there. :)

To further complicate matters, I need to go to this other town to meet some guy to do some thing I forget what it is. Had to go through a forest to get there. It's a town built on water or something. By the time I got there, I was pretty tired and just saved without looking around.

I finished Shrine Island in Skies of Arcadia. The graphics style and settings of this game remind me an awful lot of Panzer Dragoon Saga. I wonder if anyone from Team Andromeda worked on this game?

So far, the game isn't leaving much of an impression on me. The battle system reminds me a little of Arc 4's, but Arc 4's was more interesting. SoA's doesn't seem to include things like back attacks doing more damage and the ability to target multiple enemies (or enemies being able to target several of your party members).

Certian attacks do that. The Yellow Moon stone teaches a sort lightning beam where you initially target one enemy, but if another enemy is in its path they both get blasted (Of course, since you can't manually position your characters, accomplishing this one is all about luck). The Red Moon Stone teaches a sort of fire explosion, which I believe at Lv. 2 will also engulf enemies nearby the initial target. Vyse's Rain of Swords tech move gets all enemies on the field.

Yeah, but those are all special or magic attacks. Arc 4 allowed you to target multiple enemies with normal attacks (Maru's bow, for example, could shoot an arrow through several enemies that are lined up or standing close together). And you could also manually position your characters in Arc 4 within a set range.

I just got Drachma to join my party. Went back to Pirate Island and saved.

Cleared Stage 5 in Cave of Ordeals in Disgaea, thus getting a God Hand weapon. I'm on my...4th cycle now. I think I'll get the human ending next time.

I also created an Angel a while back. Never made one the first time I played. You can fight them on the last stages, but unlocking them as a usable class is annoying. Cute how they look slightly out of touch and have neat one liners such a "DIE" and REPENT" in very stern voices. Angry crazy angels. :D

Also created a Majin. AKA strongest class. Also annoying to get, but I did make one in the past. Not much to say, other than he's spiffy powerful and has spikey hair. And grunts when he attacks.

Disgaea has like a whole other level of gameplay that I never explored, since I quit in the middle of the story.

Last night, I watched 15 minutes of Episode III before I got too tired to continue. It's funny... that part of the movie didn't really interest me in the theater, but watching it at home, I found it much more entertaining. I hope to watch a little more tonight if I can.

I'm not sure if I'm going to be around a little bit, or not at all during the next week. I know my thousands of fans worldwide would be crushed if I disappeared without giving notice.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

I got into my first airship battle in Skies of Arcadia and beat the Blackbeard pirate guy. Now, I'm wondering even more if Team Andromeda had anything to do with this game as that was ever-so-slightly reminiscent of Panzer Dragoon Saga's battles.

After that, I just entered the Imperial City Valua and saved at the inn.

Another thing that makes me think Disney got the idea for Treasure Planet from this game is that both have a guy with a mechanical arm (Drachma in SoA, Silver in TP).

Speaking of which, Sony must've gotten a lot of ideas for Arc 4 from this game. Here's a list of similarities I've noticed so far:

- Both Kharg and Vyse wear those detached shirt sleeve things (as I mentioned before.)

- Kharg and Vyse have very similar battle stance animations (though Kharg's is animated better and is even more exaggerated.)

- Both games start out with an army of imperial airships chasing a mysterious girl who's traveling in her own airship. In both games, the mysterious girl meets up with the heroes, but is eventually captured by the imperials.

- In both games, the commander of the imperial airships is a guy who seems like he's trying to look and dress as much like Dracula as possible (Darkham in Arc 4, Galcian in SoA).

- In both games, the Imperial City is divided into the wealthy place where the rich people live, and the slums where the poor are confined and forced to work.

- In both games, the hero's hometown is know for having a windmill (only one in SoA, several in Arc 4). In both games, the imperial army eventually destroys the windmill(s), although it happens much sooner in SoA. And they're destroyed for the same reason - because the army found out that the town is where they were hiding the "mysterious girl" from before.

At this point, though, I'd still say Arc 4 is better both in the gameplay and story department. The characters in this game aren't very well-written so far. There was practically no motivation for Drachma to suddenly turn control of his ship over to Vyse and join his party, except that the game requires it. I agree with MYG's comment that the characters aren't "piratey" enough. It seems like when you have a world of floating islands, pirate ships that sail between them, and pirates for main characters, it's a very large dropped ball to make them so typical. I think the main reason it's like that is because the game's inspiration draws so much from Castle in the Sky, which also had leading characters with generic personalities.

And if it seems like I'm hung up too much on the story elements, it's because the gameplay elements haven't been very impressive so far. Battles are mostly just using "attack" over and over again.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

I have one more episode to go on the Garfield and Friends Vol. 4 Disc 1.

The first time I ever seriously watched the show was when it was on that old Nick in the Afternoon time slot (when it was on TBS, I was always in school when it was on). You know, with Stick Stickly? ("Write to me, Stick Stickly, PO Box, 963, New York City, New York State, 10108". Can't believe I still remember that little ditty) Anyways, on Vol. 3 there was about one whole disc of episodes I had never seen before. Like the one about the little Italian Restaurant run by the nice old woman that Garfield stopped from getting bought out by some large corporation, or the one about the mother mouse getting caught in the cookie jar and her son kept pestering Garfield about it, then went and got the Ahnuld spoof mouse to come help him. Wonder if I was out of town for a week or something.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

I remember both of those episodes. I still haven't bough the Vol. 3 set and no one around here has the Vol. 4 set for sale so I'll probably have to buy that one from Amazon.

In SOA, I just got to the part where you rescue the pirates from being executed in Valua City. That was the must juvenile and unrealistic rescue scene I have ever seen in my life. Vyse, Aika, and Drachma come up through a manhole and yell, "We're here to rescue you." This inspires the captured pirates to look at each other, smile, then start kicking the bad guys away from them. Even ignoring how utterly stupid that is, there's no reason they couldn't have done that if Vyse hadn't shown up to help.

This game is written on such a juvenile level that it makes me wonder how reviews like this (http://www.workingdesigns.com/rpg_critic/dreamcast/Skies_of_Arcadia.htm) are even possible. Are we even playing the same game? The crazy thing about it is that he mostly praises the game for having well-written characters and facial expressions, but both Alundra 2 and Arc 4 had characters and facial expressions that were a million times better, plus they actually had good gameplay to go with their stories, and he gave those games lower scores.

He probably gave Phantasy Star Online a 10. And since Skies of Arcadia is better than PSO (which is really scary when you stop to think about it), he decided that he had to give SoA an 11.

Okay, after I wrote that, I decided to go check for a PSO review before I posted. He gave PSO an 11 as well.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

I just finished the Imperial City in SoA and reached the point where Fina joins the party.

Okay, that settles it - someone at Disney played this game before they made Treasure Planet. Cupil (sp?) = Morph.

Now I'm just waiting for the Martin Short Robot with memory loss problems or the giant triangular door that lets your ship warp anywhere instantly.

The game might be getting a little better at this point, but I still think the characters are poorly-motivated. There's no given explanation as to why the father doesn't go with Vyse on his quest. Still no reason given as to why Drachma stays with you instead of continuing his whale hunt. And since the Empire attacked Pirate Island once, now that the Blue Rogues have escaped with Fina again, why can't they just come back and attack it again? Crawl said that's a problem with a lot of RPGs, but it seems especially bad in this one because the empire is "right down the street" from Pirate Island and nothing's been done to fortify the island from further attack.

Oh, yes, another Arc 4 similarity: The Moon Stones provide energy, just like the Spirit Stones in Arc 4. And the Moon Crystals are special, highly-powerful Moon Stones that the empire is after, just like the Great Spirit Stones in Arc 4. (But I guess stones and crystals are common RPG MacGuffins anyway.)

I finished that final episode on Disc 1, and got through about three Disc 2 episodes.

I also made a door sign with a little pocket where I can put slips of paper with random quotes on them, like "A flying castle is a castle that flies", "EAST MOST PENINSULA IS THE SECRET" and "Rap is what Hell sounds like" (I know Hobbes originally said "Mambo #5 is what Hell sounds like", but I felt the same also applied to rap. I've never heard Mambo #5, so I don't know if it's rap.)

FO and I were talking about how lamely some game reviewers (like the WD critic for his Skies of Arcadia piece) praise a game's story.

You shouldn't be able to say, "This game is great because it has a great story", if the only good thing you can say about the story is, "I liked it" or "I liked the characters." That's not even a step up above saying, "I liked this game because it's fun."

And "This game has facial expressions!" is pretty lame praise, too. Would you poop your pants in joy for any movie -- which all have facial expressions -- you saw then? It's like saying, "Wow, Harrison Ford was actually walking around in 3D!!"

So, what can you do to praise a story? Well, you can look to literature for ideas. Does the story have a theme? Actually, I'd say few game stories have a theme, but then if one did it might be something worth praising.

Just about anything -- story, gameplay, music -- can be judged by originality. Is the story original? Or is it just "rag tag group of children adventurers save the world?" Again, not many game stories are that original... because not that many game stories are worthy of praise.

Here's a very simple test, which many game stories nevertheless fail: Is the beginning of the story important by the end of game? As an example, the beginning of Chrono Cross is NOT important by the end of the game.

Personally, I think the beginning of Final Fantasy 4 is still important to the end of the game -- It sets up Cecil's search for redemption, which is important to the entire game. And of course, on a purely plot level, the crystals are important all the way to the end.

And if we're going to talk about characters, what's so special about them? Please, not just that you like them. Do they show a side of humanity that isn't often seen (like Travis in Taxi Driver)?

I'm not even saying game stories have to be "sophisticated" in some way to be good. Actually, I think there may be more good humorous game stories (Ratchet and Clank, Super Mario RPG) than serious ones.

But, please, please, please, there has to be something interesting.

Re: ...

Another thing about SoA's facial expressions is that so far I've seen "Normal happy look", "super happy look", "sad look", "determined look", and "deer in the headlights look", all of which were done by Final Fantasy 6 over ten years ago.

Even Resident Evil 0 had much better facial expressions than that. Example: In the beginning, there's a scene where Billy saves Rebecca's life and he asks her if she's okay. She gives him a thumbs-up and this look that says, "I still don't really like you or trust you, but, yeah, I'm okay. Thanks."

Then at the end, as Rebecca leaves, Billy gives her the same thumbs-up and says, "Thank you, Rebecca", and the look on his face shows that he's both grateful to her and he's going to miss her. In both situations, they don't have to say it, their faces say it all. (Now, it's too bad everything that occurs between those two scenes is ridiculous nonsense, but that's another story.)

But SoA's really aren't any more sophisticated than something like Kartia where Amano drew a different picture of each character with different facial expressions to match the tone of what they're saying. (And Kartia had much more interesting and original characters - people who actually had motivations behind everything they did.)

ff3(aka ff vi):did i say i actually had to read a spoiler free FAQ to figure out sabin's blitz? heh. sabin IS a magician. a tanker magician with a weak magic stat. his flame dance and aura bolt kicks ass after i gave a twin earrings. oh well. i'm at the point when i'm suppose to infiltrate some empire prison to save some espers to revive terra who morphed into her esper form and went crazy. i decided to put cyan on the team, since i guessed his armour looks like the best (so far), and his retort sword tech might come in useful in a boss fight(though still not as high damage as sabin's blitz riight now). still not gonna use gau, even after consulting that rage FAQ. i just don't like a char i can't fully control. sure hope i can get shadow on the team for this mission. he seems to have the best atk power right now. best melee/magic block too.

out of this world(aka another world): yay. completed it. not exactly a real satisfying ending, but fun while it lasted. looks like i've completed more levels that i originally thought i did. i had to check a walkthrough to get pass the last 3 levels. trouble fighting guards. and i didn't figure out that i had to allow one of them to drop a few bombs, so that the bombs would a blow a hole through the floor for me to proceed farther. tried re-playing it on turbo mode. bad idea. too much frame skip makes the guards kill me super fast. and there's no way i can get pas the falling rocks on turbo. so much for my speed gaming ambition.

imo, mambo #5 sounds like extra cheesy swing music. i wouldn't call it hell, unless you really hate muzak kinda music.

On the other hand, there are some games that test is not appropriate for.

For example, for Ninja Gaiden X, the very, very beginning of the story is relevant to the very, very ending.

It's the intervening 20 hours that's irrelevant.

One thing that caused the Sweet Home movie to pretty much blow is that at any given point, everything before that moment was treated like it never happened, or made irrelevent.

Like when Asuka dug up the baby, nobody seemed to recognize it from that painting they found just after they arrived. Better yet, they were filming it in the previous scene.

Or when Kazuo has to fight the men to give him the key, and Taguchi opens up the place by breaking down a boarded up window and opening it from the inside.

Lufia 2 is one that fails that test miserably. Arek is never, ever seen again after the game's opening cinema.

Anyway, I guess Drachma finally decided to go on his whale hunt after all (though I still don't understand why he turned his ship over to Vyse in the first place, considering he just met him and the fact that Vyse just wrecked his own ship), but maybe there will be an explanation. I wonder if it's one of those things where Drachma lost his son to the whale and Vyse somehow reminds him of his son? (Don't tell me if I'm right or wrong, I'll know eventually.)

For some reason I did some rummaging around IMDb looking up some movies I've seen and how they scored.

Why is Animal House rated a 7.5 while Stripes got a 6.8 and Popeye a 4.9? Sure, Stripes and Popeye aren't the greatest movies ever, but they're still better than Animal House which currently stands as the worst movie I've seen this year. I mean, Sweet Home kind of stunk, but it had its moments and as a fan of the game I was happy to be able to see its movie counterpart (plus, it made for a great entry to my site). Animal House was garbage from beginning to end.

My dad insisted I watch it, told me it was going to be a "cute" movie. Then again, every movie/show he tells me about he describes as "cute". I don't even know what he means by that anymore.

Animal House:
Him: "Cute"
Me: Garbage.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid:
Him: "Cute"
Me: Okay, when he asked me to watch this one, I had already watched Planet of the Apes and Aliens SE earlier that day. Everything was just going in one eye and out the other, and after the first ten minutes of this, I was feeling sick and stopped it. So, I don't know what to say about this one.

Dr. Strangelove:
Him: "Cute"
Me: Okay movie, but I didn't think it was funny

Every Which Way But Loose:
Him: "Cute"
Me: Normally I watch a movie, and over a few days my thoughts settle into place and an opinion forms. It's been about three months now, and this movie still has left no impression on me.

Hogan's Heroes:
Him: "Cute"
Me: I didn't see too many episodes of this, but what I did was enjoyable.

Popeye:
Him: "Cute"
Me: Great laughs, decent movie.

Some Like It Hot:
Him: "Cute"
Me: Very enjoyable.

Stripes:
Him: "Cute"
Me: Good, but not great.

Twins:
Him: "Cute"
Me: The more I think about it, the dumber I think it was. It's also a tad on the politically incorrect side if you take a moment to think about who was cast as "the perfect man". I'm sure it was unintentional, but...

Vacation:
Him: "Cute"
Me: I didn't hate it as much as Animal House, but I wouldn't mind I never seeing it again.

I'm not sure what it is with my family and movies. My mother always wants to give me the life stories of all the actors, and when I commented on how Alien vs. Predator took two R-rated movie series and made them PG-13, my brother said something like "Well, Alien was R-rated for that time. It's pretty tame by today's standards". I guess he thinks the Alien chestburster scene was like it was in Spaceballs.

Okay, I swear Episode 83 of Garfield and Friend (the trio with the flying Odie, the one with Wade and Orson going on storybook adventures that Roy kept tampering with, and the one where the witch wanted to marry Jon) was the last one Nickelodeon showed. Everything after that is brand new to me. I also hit some episodes with a revision to that "Come on in, come the place where the fun never ends" one where they inserted a few scenes from the newest season in place of some older ones (although the revision didn't come in until the second episode on disc 3). I guess this is season 6?

Nickelodeon probably only purchased so many episodes. Garfield & Friends was on for a ridiculously long time, like 6 or 7 seasons. I've said before that I still believe ABC, NBC, and CBS were competing to see who could have the longest-running Saturday Morning Cartoon ever. ABC with Real Ghostbusters, NBC with Muppet Babies, CBS with Garfield and Friends.

I didn't watch that show regularly, so I don't really know, but I do know for a fact that CBS was really tooting their horn about it when it went into its seventh season.

Nowadays, with shows like The Simpsons that've been on forever, it doesn't seem like a big deal, but back then it was. I don't think it was originally intended for any Saturday morning cartoon series to last more than 1 or 2 seasons.

However, I also feel it's a huge misconception that all Saturday morning cartoons were just meant to sell toys. That's true of some of them, but certainly not all of them, and most that lasted more than 2 seasons were being aired even when the toys were no longer in production (like Real Ghostbusters).

I received a slip of paper in my mailbox a few weeks back saying that for three consecutive Fridays they would be showing Star Wars Episodes 1, 2, and 3. Tonight was the night for Revenge of the Sith. When I went there, everyone said some kind of kissing seminar (???) was going on. I couldn't tell if everyone was joking or if they cancelled Sith for some kissing thing. What with the huge crowd, the hostesses who thought I was jumping with joy at the thought of seeing and hearing them loudy snap their gum in my face, and the fact nobody would tell me what the fuck was going on, I just turned around and came back to my room. Come 8:00, the time the paper said Revenge of the Sith was supposed to be shown, I think I'll watch Alien vs. Predator; the only other movies I brought with were Finding Forrester, First Knight, and Two Brothers, all of which are probably better but don't seem right for watching when I got all hyped up for Sci-Fi.

Guess I'll have to get the RotS DVD if I want to see it.

Also, a few days ago I saw a Nintendo employee checking out the McDonalds where I work, she was marking stuff down on a clipboard, doing something with a DS, and asking the staff what the store number was, I think it had something to do with the Wi-Fi connection in the store.

I got to the point where the facehuggers lunged at everyone in AVP when my roommate walked it.

The movie so far has been one big WTF.

Still better than Animal House, though.

Finished AVP.

What the hell.

Predators are good guys and taught man how to build?

Predators wiped out the Mayan civilization?

And unless I'm missing something from Predator 2 which I haven't seen yet, PREDATORS DO NOT BEFRIEND HUMANS!

Love the way it's named Alien vs. Predator when there's only about ten minutes of actual fighting between Aliens and Predators (which were probably the best ten minutes of the movie, though I don't know how much that says). Most of the movie is a lot of movement (both characters and constant camera shifts) and noise. It's basically one big mess. Everything happens so fast that you're sitting there going "Er-wai-wai-wai... er... wait... what?"

Humans aren't in this movie for any real reason. Except for the Ripley knockoff, everybody's basically given a name which is said no more than once in the movie, and then a prompt death. The Ripley knockoff is given a name which is said no more than twice in the movie, then runs around a lot.

At one point the Ripley knockoff goes to say Dutch's "You are one ugly motherfucker" before blasting an Alien, but just as she goes "motherf-" an Alien screech cuts her off. On top of that line in general being forced in, the cutoff just made it all the more ridiculous.

The ending was retarded, and only serves to (A) set up a sequel or (B) show the outcome of a prior event that shouldn't have happened to begin with. So I go with A.

EDIT: http://p197.ezboard.com/fflyingomelettespalacefrm26.showMessage?topicID=247.topic

I heard that Predator 2 ends with a human gaining the respect of the Predators. And I think in the Alien vs. Predator comics, there was a human woman and a Predator that were in love.

But I agree that the idea that they taught humans how to build civilizations is retarded.

Yeah, I was reading that review MYG linked to in that topic. There was something like:

Strange it didn't say anything about the motherfucker line.

Oh yeah, one more thing.

When the Predator sets up the bomb and tells the Ripley knockoff about it, she says "Well, I hope it blows up every last fucking one of them." So why did they "censor" the Dutch line?

I love having a cell phone. It's already come in handy for stuff. I had to call a taxi once and had to call home for some important info, too. I'm on one of those buy minutes as you go plans (with required purchase of at least 40 minutes, for $20, every two months). I'm not sure if that's the best value or not, but I didn't want to start another $30 a month subscription when it's not going to be used that often.

Anyway, has anyone read Roger Ebert's answer man this week?

I gamer wrote in (who liked the Mortal Kombat and Final Fantasy Spirits Within movies -- great taste there!) and said that games weren't a lower art form than books or movies.

Then Ebert replied that yes they WERE a lower art form than books or movies, and if they weren't, someone would be able to convince him otherwise.

Well, let's face it, most gamers wouldn't be able to convince him otherwise, because most gamers are retarded. But what games would they even even try to convince him with? Considering the movie he recently "bashed", DOOM would probably be one, but the prominent other would be Final Fantasy 7. And I think any movie goer with sophisticated taste would see Final Fantasy 7's story as rambling and unfocused (there's probably more time spent on Cloud cross dressing or screwing around in the Casino than on all of Sephiroth's subplots put together).

Or if EGM does go through with naming Tetris as the number 1 game of all time, again, that says to the rest of the world that games are -- at their very best -- nothing other than time wasters.

There's something funny about this. The reason I started reading Ebert's site (and later, Josh Becker's) and watching quite a few movies wasn't because I was particularly interested in movies, nor even movie criticism for its own sake. I was just interested in seeing how people approached criticizing movies (to contrast with approaches I've seen for criticizing games), and how descriminating people's tastes can be for movies (again, to contrast with games). So, I was interested in games, not movies.

I can't really say that the result of that experiment was that movie fans are smarter than game fans (just take a look at IMDB's boards to disprove that notion), but I do think that cinema has "keepers of its culture" that are much more discriminating and probably just simply smarter than gaming has (this going back to what I said in the EGM thread about there being no intellectuals in the gaming media).

Of course movie critics won't take our representatives in the gaming media seriously. I'm a gamer and don't even take them seriously.

I was thinking perhaps of writing (or collaberating with others here to write) and email to him anyway on the subject. Hmm.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

I do have one other thing to say about the movie issue, though: Despite reading a lot of movie pages and seeing a lot of movies, I do not see myself as a "convert" from games to movies.

I sort of think that with movies, if you are not a big movie fan, but still want to see the best that movies have to offer, you could see perhaps ten or so films (Goodfellas, The Godfather, Lawrence of Arabia, etc.) and you'd have a pretty good idea. You could then continue to see more movies if you wanted to, and some might even be great, but I don't think you'll find anything that surprises you with how good it is.

Of course, the same is true for games. If someone would have played my top ten favorite games, they'd already be well on their way to being reasonably versed. But regardless, games remain "my" interest in a way that movies do not.

In other news, I tried getting back into Super Mario Sunshine for about ten minutes before I was fucking sick of it again.

Here's a rule game makers should live by: Do not ruin an entire game for the sake of one puzzle!!

Example: In Mario Sunshine, to get a Yoshi, you have to find the Yoshi egg and see what fruit he wants, then you have to run all the way across the stage to get the fruit, then all the way back to the Yoshi. And if (and chances are is the case) getting the Yoshi is just the first step towards a larger goal, you'll then have a lot more running around to do.

Some times it's even worse, like when you have to keep pounding two switches until the fruit you want comes out.

It is so boring, pointless and unnecessary. Why not just get the Yoshi when you find the egg, like in the other games?

Is there any justification for it? Well, in the hotel level, the Yoshi egg is in an obvious position, but you have to solve some puzzles to get the fruit. So, they got one puzzle out of this system.

One puzzle, but the rest of the game sucks as a result. They should have sacrificed (or modified; why not have the egg hidden rather than fruit) that puzzle to make getting Yoshi simplier for the rest of the game.

I'm thinking of getting back into gaming with a different game, but I don't want to make a commitment on the board about that yet.

Well, I pretty much have only one thing to say about Ebert's comment.

He gives just about every movie these days 3 or 4 stars. In my not-so-humble opinion, your time is better spent playing a great game than seeing most of those movies.

Case in Point: He gave Van Helsing something like 3 stars. Better to spend 2 hours of your life playing Castlevania 3 than watching Van Helsing.

Sorry I haven't discussed gaming much lately. I've been spending hours upon hours at school gathering data for my dissertation, as well as numerous other things. Just not enough hours in the day for the last month. My dad had heart surgery earlier this week too, so gaming has been the last thing on my mind.

I tried playing a little bit of Thousand Year Door last night. I've obviously been extremely busy and not much in the mood for such things, but I had time to kill before bed. The game looks nice... I do like the idea of everything having the paper look to it. The story seems a little boring so far, but I think some reviewer said that it gets funnier and more interesting later on.

Why is it that all these creatures that are usually evil seem to be just hanging around doing normal stuff now? A Goomba university and they don't mind Mario visiting? Bob-ombs that work hard unloading cargo? Maybe it's covered in the previous Paper Mario game...

The battle system is similar to what I expected, I guess. Seems like it has the potential to be fun, but tons of random encounters might make it start seeming dull pretty quickly. I see that timed button presses are still around.

Goombella joined up with Mario and she'll tell you about areas you're in and the backgrounds of people you talk to. I met the Goomba professor and I think I have to go under the city to find the Thousand Year Door and take the treasure map to it. I honestly don't remember all the details of what I'm doing right now. I hope there are some enemies in there because I'm kind of tired of talking to things.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

I am getting really sick of that Rupee boss in Skies of Arcadia. I've gone up about 5-8 levels per character and still can't beat them. I've noticed a few things, though:

1. Each time I level up, I do last longer in the battle.

2. They seem to be weak to blue magic, so the next time I fight, I'm going to change all my weapons to blue and then hit them with the Wevli spell.

I'm still going to level up a bit more first, though. I know that I could skip them and move onto Ixa Taka, but I'm afraid that what will happen is that once I move onto the next part of the game, more optional stuff will become open to me. And if I keep skipping over things, eventually I'll be overwhelmed with a backlog of stuff to do. Not only that, but I don't really know for sure if I'll reach a "point of no return" eventually, or if that boss might move on, either.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

I just finished watching Two Brothers.

Doesn't seem like anybody could figure out what they wanted this movie to be. A touchy feely emotional experience, fuzzy animal fun time, action and drama, a comedy, or a conservation plug (I'd call it this, except the movie doesn't go near that until the very end when it says something about how few tigers are left in the world.). The result is a jack-of-all-trades hodgepodge. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for tiger conservation. But the movie is rather blah. A lot of stuff happens, there's no explanation, and some stuff doesn't feel like it needed to be there. Like how exactly the hunter guy gets out of prison. Why did he go to prison in the first place? Just to show what he was doing was illegal? To introduce that fat Italian-looking guy who's in the movie for a total of seven minutes?

I also would have loved to see the hunter feed one of those honey drops to the full grown tiger at the end, but when he opens the case it's empty. And the movie implies he had the same tin of honey drops for two or three years.

This movie also had some of the most innappropriate music. In one scene the dog is chasing one of the tigers across the house as this comic chase music plays, the dog corners the the tiger, then the woman comes in and screams, runs back out, AND THE COMICAL CHASE MUSIC IS STILL PLAYING!

If you're scratching your head, the tiger killed the dog. And comical chase music is playing. WTF.

There's other cases of that, but I can't remember them. I just got off the movie and have already forgotten half of it.

The scene after the colosseum where the two tigers ran off together made absolutely no sense. It actually felt like that's where the movie was going to end, but it was just a bunch of nonsense sandwiched between a somewhat touching reunion and further nonsense with the people setting the jungle on fire.

Something I noticed about the last two movies I've seen, which are both rather recent, is that I walked away from their endings not knowing anybody's name. I mean, I don't know the names of half the cast of Aliens, but in AVP I don't even know the heroine's name. In this, I don't even know the hunter's name (I know the kid is named "Raoul" because they repeated it no less than eight times during the ending, and the tigers were "Sungha" and "Kamul" or something). Yet in many older movies, I'm able to pick up the main characters' names right away. I don't know if it's because their names are said more often because the writers are trying to make the personas more alive, if they try to give the characters an actual personality so I want to learn their names, or maybe even both.

By the way, I take back what I said about Alien vs Predator's best scene being the Alien and Predator fighting. The best scene was the penguin one at the beginning.

ff3: spent too much time training with espers, finding out that most of the spells are useless, and only celes/terra does a decent amount of damage with the offensive spells.but locke is a hell lot more useful with magic). the random encounters on the empire's continent were strangely more deadiler than the ones in the magitek lab.

ditching cyan, cause he gets killed too often(guess i was wrong about him getting good armour, or maybe it's just because the enemies keep targeting him first), and his slash(1/2 HP damage) never works. still doing more(n faster) damage with sabin. his weapon sucks too. current team: edgar/terra/sabin/setzer. i still have no idea how to get shadow and where to find him. since i'm in narshe(sp?) now, i might as well try to find mog before i go to the esper gate to seek an alliance with the espers.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

Another thing about why Two Brothers as a conservation program doesn't really work: It's totally fake. Now, the tigers being hunted and put on the black market thing and in the circus thing is fairly accurate. Actually, it seemed that everything the humans did was realistic. But everything the tigers did was nonsense.

An aging tiger adult is not going to willingly use his tail as a toy to cheer up some random tiger cub who lost the will to live.

A tiger cub is not going to play hide and seek with a boy by standing perfectly still among the boy's animal plushies.

Two tigers are probably not going to recognize each other as siblings when they haven't seen each other for two years.

An adult tiger is not going to approach a small boy he hasn't seen in about a year with a "Hey, what's up old friend!" attitude. The tiger would probably chase after him and eat his face.

A mother tiger is not going to magically come out of the blue and readopt her offspring when they're adults.

In short, it's only slightly more accurate than The Lion King. Was Lion King a conservation plug? Nope. Two Brothers tried to be at the very end, and it just made the movie even more jumbled and messy.

Don't feel like explaining the details of the whole thing, but our family had two house cats that hadn't seen eachother for a couple years, and they recognized each other when briefly reunited. I was pretty surprised by it at the time. And you could tell they weren't just curious or something, because the one cat would always go absolutely nuts when it saw a random cat outside, but this was just a friendly greeting.

I'm partially into the final case in Pheonix Wright for the DS, the one they added exclusively for the system.

It's a fun game and I've enjoyed the characters a lot, but as an adventure game it doesn't seem particularly strong. Seeing as it's in a genre with practically zero replayability, it's "puzzles" should try especially hard to be difficult, but I haven't encountered anything that really stumped me, and there aren't any serious repercussions if you get something wrong (If you screw up five times in a row, you get a game over, but I'm almost finished with the game and I have never even come close to that).

I've definately enjoyed my time with the game, but I sure am glad I didn't purchase it.

How long were your cats initially together for? The tigers were seperated when they were little cubs, which means they were originally together for, I dunno, two or three months (I know I didn't mention that. I forgot about it, just like I forgot half the movie).

if i wanted to (hopelessly) convince elitist eg that video/PC games could be great, i sure as won't use any final fantasy(or FF clone) as an example. that would be like asking a soap-opera fan to convince that guy that "days of our lives" or i dunno ... "picket fences" is/was the 8th wonder of the modern world. using a graphic adventure game might be a slightly better idea. off the top of my head: Beneath A Steel Sky, Shadow Of The Comet, The 7th Guest, any Monkey Isle(heheheh probably not), and Grim Fandango.

there are some obscure japanese graphic novels/adventure games which has decent enough characterisation(sp?) and all that "exploring of human conflicts/relationships/limitations" stuff, so that even someone like eg might be moved or at least throw away a 3 star at it.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

I'm about 4 hours into Alundra 2 (the in game clock says more like 5 hours, but that counts time I left the game paused but wasn't playing).

At the least, it seems like the game is easy enough to stick with, and has some momentum going. I've already cleared a couple of larger dungeons, as well as a few smaller areas.

The two larger areas were the Ox Cart (a giant bull shaped tank) and Dunn Web. Both had a weird little gameplay diversion at the end, followed by a boss.

For the Ox Cart, the boss is a bull that rolls up into a ball and chases you, Indiana Jones style, down an obstacle course.

The other area ends with a mine cart ride. You have to throw stones at enemies that come from both directions (pretty easy), as well as jump over rocks and duck under floating spikes (sort of Moon Patrol style).

The boss of that area was a large spider.

So far I've beaten every boss on my first try. However, I am playing on Easy. FO suggested that I should still be able to get a bit out of the game (in terms of puzzles), so I could save Normal for a replay if I'd care enough for the game.

When I tried Timesplitters 2 awhile ago, I started on easy, but after I got used to the controls and started getting bored with that difficulty, I simply aborted it and immediately progressed to normal before finishing easy.

That seems like it could be a good idea for some games (actually, I sort of did something similar with Devil May Cry), but unfortunately with a long adventure game I don't think it's feasible to just give up the game half way through and restart it.

I watched the Family Guy movie tonight, and it wasn't that funny most of the time. Not as good as the average regular episode. You pretty much have to play Resident Evil 0 on Easy or Normal before trying Hard because you'll have to know what's coming up to prepare your characters correctly. Otherwise, you'd be starting over a lot. That's one thing that was nice about that game's difficulty settings is that they did have a purpose.

No game progress tonight. I've been busy converting midis with NSF2MIDI. Damn, do I love that program.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

Going back to the bull boss, FO said it took her several tries to beat on normal when she first played the game. I can imagine it being harder if you could survive fewer hits.

As I said, Flint moves somewhat slowly, so the battle is a matter of patterns, not reflexes.

During the fight, the bull sometimes rolls up into ball and bowls around, and he moves much faster than you, so you can't simply run away from him. You have to run both to increase your distance from him, and to move off the line connecting the two of you. And if you're not far enough away from him, you simply won't be able to move far enough in that direction fast enough to avoid him. So it's also important to plan your moves in such a way as to control your and the boss's positions.

Storywise, I thought it was mildly funny that the human lose their personality when they get a key, but the bull gained a personality.

It took me a little while to get used to Flint's controls, but by the time I was halfway into the game, I wouldn't have wanted them any other way. I actually like those controls more than Alundra's controls in the first Alundra game. I'm really glad Flint has "stop on a dime" controls, because if you went skidding several steps when you landed, it would make some parts of that game damn near impossible. (You'll see what I mean eventually.)

Quote: However, I am playing on Easy. FO suggested that I should still be able to get a bit out of the game (in terms of puzzles), so I could save Normal for a replay if I'd care enough for the game.

I have difficulty recommending games at all these days, but if you're in the kind of mood where you feel like giving up on gaming because everything either annoys you or can't hold your attention, then I think playing Alundra 2 on Easy is a good choice. I've only actually beaten the Normal mode once, back when I first played the game. Both replays of the game were on the Easy mode, and I still found it enjoyable and challenging, especially in the later dungeons. There are still some parts that give me a lot of trouble. But since you don't get anything extra for beating Normal and it has the same exact ending, then it's best reserved for a replay if you liked the game enough and want more of a challenge. But Normal can be hard to play the first time through.

I might start my Eternal Darkness review tonight. I should take screencaps if nothing else.

Quote: How long were your cats initially together for?

I forgot to answer this earlier. It was a long, long time ago, but I think they were together for less than a year. We got them from the same pet store and they grew up together. One cat stayed with me and my parents when we moved from there, and the other cat stayed with other family members (we were all living in the same house originally). Our cat was the better one! 8)

I got a bunch of Eternal Darkness screencaps. It took all night, but I still might want to get a few screencaps of the "boss" in Peter's Chapter. I'm glad that you get that "Jump to Chapter" feature for beating all three paths, because otherwise it would be taking even longer.

I can't seem to play regular videogames, I just don't have it in me anymore. However, I did take a walk to the arcade with someone. I think it's the first time I've been to one in a year or two. And I can't believe this place stays open at this time of year. It's not tiny at all, and there were only 2 other people there besides us (and they were there together, too). I played lots of different things, and I assure you that I sucked at all of them. Had a great time, though.

I made it to Ixa Taka in Skies of Arcadia, but I haven't moved onto Moon Stone Mountain yet. I know where it is, but I'm trying to find some more of the hidden overworld discoveries first. I found the Bird Drawing, the Golden Man, and the Anemone. Currently I'm missing three things. One is a rock, one is the hidden city of Rixis (I'm guessing I can't find this until I after I complete Moon Mountain because that's where we're supposed to find the guy who will tell us where it is), and one other thing that I can't remember what the adventurer's guild said it was...

My levels are going up like crazy in this area. I still didn't beat Rupee or Piastol. If my levels go above 30, I might give them another shot.

Uh...what? Explain.

Is THAT the "man" and "bird" that you were talking about? I thought you meant a real man and bird...I thought I remembered seeing a man with a bird in the opening FMV.

I just wish I knew what the Golden Man's hand is pointing at. I've followed it several times and searched the area and can't find anything there.

Remember that man and bird I told you about that the hunt for killed Skies of Arcadia for me? And if I'm interpreting MYG's post correctly, it killed SoA for him too? And I recommended asking for help if you didn't find them within ten minutes of searching?

A guy in the town of Horteka who claims to have good eyesight gave a clue about the Golden Man, but I ran into it by accident. I flew my ship into a wall and the compass started spinning. I searched and there it was. I followed where his arm is pointing, but couldn't find anything there. So I kept searching around farther south and found the bird drawing. I didn't realize those things were mandatory finds as most of the "discoveries" are optional.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

I managed to get in under an hour and a half of Alundra 2 tonight.

First, I simply had to figure out what to do in Porta Medusa (the pirate town). There was one small area of the town I missed for various reasons. The next part of the puzzle didn't have me stumped long, but it did involve doing something that usually doesn't (maybe even never before) advance a story in most adventures or RPGs.

I also got the gold badge, which wasn't too hard. It did take me a little while to get the puzzle piece before that (the one that involved stacking barrels and blocks) but I eventually figured out the rules and from there logic prevailed.

I finished the TGL mode of Guardian Legend. I liked the game enough that it's gotten me in a mood for shoot-em-ups, so I picked up Zanac after that. The first three stages aren't that bad once you get used to them, but I keep wiping out BADLY on Area 4.

Area 4 is the most crucial level until at least Area 10 IMO. If I beat it without dying I almost always get to Area 10 (still haven't beaten it though). If I die in Area 4 I usually don't get a whole lot farther.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

Fobbies are great for leveling up. They do very little damage and leave tons of experience points.

I had a weird thing happen in Skies of Arcadia. I was searching the rocks in the South Ocean to try to find one of the hidden discoveries (something about an eroded rock). My compass started spinning wildly when I approached a really big rock, but I didn't react in time and got sucked into a battle. When I came out of the battle, my compass was no longer spinning. I spent about 15 minutes or more circling that big rock, trying desperately to find the point where my compass would spin, but to no avail. Then I concluded that something else must've made it spin. I backed away from the rock and turned around when I spotted a very small rock moving quite quickly through the air. I flew after it, and caught up to it, and sure enough it made my compass spin. That thing must've passed by my ship while I was exploring the other rock and made my compass momentarily spin on its way through, but I didn't see it go by.

I have to return to the guild to get the clue for the other discovery I'm currently missing, but since Moon Mountain is on the way, I decided to do that area first. So, now I'm in the mines and just beat the Antonio2 (robot bull) boss.

This game uses a lot of palette-swapped enemies and now a palette-swapped boss, as this guy was identical to the first boss.

I beat Castlevania Lament of Innocence yesterday... the camera angles were deadly in some cases... but it really was an easy game... aside from some of the obscure secrets that you don’t really need to get. It was an OK game. The areas were hard to navigate because of the camera angles and it was rather repetitive… but the whip combos were easy and fun to use, and it looked cool… and some of the boss battles were fun. But… whatever… it’s a Castlevania… the Castlevania to start all Castlevanias.

I played a little bit of Alundra 2 this evening.

I went back to the gold badge trials and got the remaining puzzle piece there (the one you need to jump across the traps to reach). Getting that piece and the other one were the hardest challenges of that area. Once I started using the run in place move, it wasn't too hard, though.

I beat the alligator with the mushroom growing out of its back. I basically just Rambo'ed it.

I'm part way through exploring Milena's castle now.

Freaky trivia: The voice actress for Milena committed suicide. That was in '99, and the game wasn't released until 2000.

I found the lost city of Rixis in SOA. That head that leads into it was not there before I beat the mines and rescued Isapa. If it was, then I must be going crazy because I searched that area about 10 times and never noticed it, and it just stands out way too much to not be noticed.

Anyway, I made it to the end of Rixis and beat the bird boss. I'm ready to try to stop Grendel now.

I also found two discoveries that weren't on the list at the guild: One was a flying golden ship. I kept seeing it zip by, then fly high above the clouds, beyong my ship's reach. I decided to wait for it to come back down, and when it finally did, I was able to catch up to it. The other discovery was a village of amazon women.

I am still unable to find the Island of Punishment, though. They said to look for an island that people avoid, but there are a lot of islands in this area that don't have inhabitants...(or at least none that I know of.)

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

I got through Milena's palace. Shortly after that was a cinema that explained Flint's past.

After that was a series of caves that FO said probably had the first stumper puzzles. I probably wouldn't say any of the puzzles there were actually stumpers (one, titled "Silence is golden", is very similar to the Gogo fight in Final Fantasy 5), but it probably was the best part of the game so far. I thought the hardest rooms were those that involved moving blocks around to reach platforms floating in the air. FO guessed that those rooms were the ones that inspired a thegia reviewer to complain that blocks flew in random directions.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

It took me a day to figure out the "Take wing and leave this hungry earth" puzzle. I think part of my problem is that for some reason, I didn't know until that point in the game that you even could do what was needed to do to solve that.

In SOA, I beat the Grendel boss and found a ton of hidden stuff north of Ixa Taxa. I am still missing the Island of Punishment, though. I'm beginning to think that island isn't located in Ixa Taka. I'll have to look for it elsewhere.

And, oh yes, it appears I was absolutely right about Drachma's motives. That cat is finally out of the bag. So now my party's all split up. Vyse is lost on an island. There must be some significance to the island. I'm positive the giant mountain in the back of it is the same one pictured in one of the paintings/photographs in his father's hut back in his hometown.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

Oh, something else I forgot to mention...

Nobody ever dies in this game! It's getting almost as ridiculous as that He-Man/She-Ra Secret of the Sword movie that Crawl and I watched a few years ago because the most ridiculous and stupid things have to happen to keep characters from getting killed.

Case in Point: De Loco fires a super-powerful Moon Cannon full force on the King of Ixa Taka's tiny little ship...and the most it does is only knock the king unconscious! Since the King was controlling the giant Grendel with the Green Moon Crystal, this causes Grendel to go out-of-control as Isapa complains about it. Never mind that all Isapa had to do is take the green moon crystal and control the giant, himself. But he doesn't simply because everybody in this game is friggin' retarded.

Also, every single time I've beaten one of the Empire's generals or one of the wanted pirates in the airship battles, they always fucking manage to survive somehow!

Somebody has GOT TO DIE and STAY DEAD!

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

Just a little more Alundra 2. I found the three pirates in the town (whose name I forgot, but it's something like Gubwub). I have the level three shield. I found all the toilets in the game, so I learned the powered up attack (which FO says she never uses) from the kid writing the toilet essay.

I gave Juhan a bunch of puzzle pieces, about 10, but I think I still need about 2 more to complete a puzzle and get a new combo.

I got the blue ring. When I play next time, I'll meet up with the pirates again at the harbor. We have to find a special key in a sunken ship, and use it in some ruins to find three artifacts.

Yes, part of the reason I'm posting that is so I don't forget when I play later. I almost wonder if I should be taking notes when I play, because there are several puzzle pieces I've had to pass, but I assume that I'll get an ability that will let me collect them later. But I might not remember when I left all of them.

I beat the sunken ship. That stage was sidescrolling: You could only move in a plane, and you can't control the camera. (Yeah, I guess everyone knows what sidescrolling means, but I mean it's really sidescrolling, not something like the Bowser stages in Super Mario 64).

The way you killed the boss was sort of a reference to Jaws.

I looked at Christian Nutt's (the guy who reviewed Alundra 2 for gamespot and gave it a 4) blog, and he said he was shocked that Pikmin 2 was getting scores as high as it is (9 at IGN, 8's elsewhere).

I'm thinking, does this guy actually read reviews and play games? Because if I'd be shocked every time a game's quality didn't match up with the scores it got, I'd be in a state of perpetual shock (instead of a state of perpetual outrage). And how can you be shocked when any game gets an 8?? It's the most commonly awarded game score.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

I also think that complaints that Alundra 2 was some especially manipulative and commerical game make no sense.

The complaint is solely that Alundra 2 doesn't have anything (storywise) to do with Alundra 1, so it was only named that to increase its sales.

Okay, but what was artistically compromised? A title? Who cares? (FO also rebutts this at more length in her review)

It seems like they'd prefer if Alundra 1 characters and situations were forced into the plot. Wouldn't that have been a MUCH greater artistic compromise?? (The answer: YES!!)

In reality, I'd say that games that keep a game story going... and going... and going... are much more artistically bankrupt and purely commerical than a game that's a "sequel in name only".

What bothers me are sequel game stories like, say, Lament of Innocence, that DO have characters and situations from earlier games, but are untrue to them. Dracula was the historical Dracula; he was not around in the 1300's. Leon was not the first Belmont vampire hunter; that was Trevor. The Belmont's family whip did not get magic vampire killing power because Leon used it to lash his girlfriend; that's just absolutely retarded. All the details of LoI's story sucked. I'd GREATLY prefer a Konami made monster action game that had nothing to do with the Belmonts and nothing to do with Dracula.

I'm just worried that it's so traditional that it will eventually wear thin, but I guess I should be able to determine that for sure after another few days with it.

One thing I can say for sure is that it probably has the least offensive random encounter rate of any RPG I've ever played.

Heh. Daccat was definitely this game's version of Captain Flint, except I guessed correctly that the treasure wasn't going to be all it was made out to be.

Well, finally, a whole city got blown up real good. But if the story tries to pull some "Don't worry! Everyone got out in time safely!" twist, someone's getting their ass kicked.

I also think that Drachma may be gone for good, too, but I don't really know for sure at this point.

Gilder reminded me a LOT of Samson in Arc 4. They dressed similary, both captains of their own airships, both like women and goofing around, and both used shotguns for a weapon. Both also tag along with the main male hero for awhile the first time you get to control him in the party.

So, wow, I've now got command of an Imperial Airship and this thing is friggin' huge! I'm also gathering up crew members and the fruity prince joined my party.

Anyway...I found another optional boss, and once again, I am much too outmatched at this point. These guys remind me a lot of the apprentice battles in The 7th Saga. I guess the difference here (thankfully) is that they're optional.

So, I just need to get some equipment to fix the ship and then I can go exploring the world again.

Definately quite different from the rest of the series, and while I appreciate the fact they're willing to take that kind of risk, I'm not quite sure on how I feel about the new gameplay system. It feels very much like a lower quality version of Knights of the Old Republic.

I don't think the final version is coming out for awhile, so here's hoping the refine it to the point it's something special. I'm thinking there's a lot of potential for FFXII to be a good game.

Ha ha! The best thing about this imperial cruiser is that you can scare the shit outta the merchant ships if you approach them.

Oh, man, Prince Enrique is ten levels behind my other party members.

On the subject of the game being a parody - I do think it was intended for this game to be more of a comedy than a serious drama. Unfortunately, it's not really all that funny. As far as videogame comedies go, it's not as offensively unfunny as Conker's Bad Fur Day, but it's not as good as Alundra 2, or even Albert Odyssey.

Yeah, I know. I don't care too much, though. That's probably the inevitable result of taking some risks -- maybe it'll be a love or hate game. Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

I beat the first boss of the sea gull ruins.

I think the game is definitely picking up now. I haven't exactly been stumped yet...

Digression. Could I be underrating A Link to the Past a little? I got stumped (for about an hour) for the first time in that game fairly early in (the room before the boss in the desert palace).

...anyway, I haven't been stumped (meaning, truly without a clue for a good deal of time), but that dungeon was even sort of mazelike, and I was kind of confused for a bit. And the puzzles are getting harder. I did pass through a room without even realizing I could do anything there. When I later came back and figured out what to do, I said outloud "I can't believe they're making me do this." FO heard and replied, "I can't tell you how many times that game made me think that." Of course, I mean this in a good way. It was a puzzle that was a bit of a trick to figure out, and then to execute.

I still haven't lost to a boss, though. I almost thought I would against the most recent one.

(Spoiler, if you can remember this -- I will be vague)

Before I fought the boss, I went through one room and there was a brief cinema. The context was such that it looked like something meaningful was supposed to be pointed out, but the content looked like nonsense. I said aloud, "I can't figure out what this is trying to communicate to me."

Anyway, I fought the boss, and couldn't figure out how to damage it. I noticed he had a red gleam in his forehead. Was that something? Hmm.. His tail didn't seem vulnerable. Then, I'm not sure what caused it, but a lightbulb went off.

So, that was a boss that was sort of tricky to figure out what to do, but it wasn't particularly difficult to actually pull off.

I had to catch a "goey" (sp?) bird there (which FO said was the only part of the game she didn't like, but it was nowhere near as annoying as spraying shadow Mario in Super Mario Sunshine). That got me the yellow ring. (which I'll have to use in several earlier areas of the game)

The island also had a Deadeye Zach's (the dart game) and so far I have over 1000 points. (The least expensive thing costs 1000 points, the most expensive, 30,000.)

I made it to a save point in the next ruins, but I haven't done much there yet.

Finally, something in SOA made me laugh hysterically! Vyse, Aika, and Fina all made their own flag for your new airship, and you get to choose which one you want to use. Vyse's was the most typical - a pirate skull with a sword and wings. Then, Aika's is what cracked my gut - It was a giant cat head with ponytails that look just like Aika's ponytails with a coin in its mouth. Fina's was a dolphin with wings.

Naturally, I chose the cat head flag. Who wouldn't?

I found Captain Gordo's freaky new restaurant and Domingo was there. He said he'd join me if I found 30 discoveries. I counted up all the ones I've found and I had 29! Well, I found Beak Rock after that, so that makes it 30. I hope Domingo is still there when I go back and that he keeps his word. If he joins my crew, I don't have to worry about him one-upping me on the discoveries any more. As it is, he got to Maroon Island (aka the Island of Punishment) before me, and I still can't find that place.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

Just some more thoughts on the gamespot Alundra 2 review:

I don't have a problem with reviewers being hard on games, if that is indeed the case there. I don't know about Christan Nutt personally (I don't think he's written many reviews for gamespot, and while he writes for EGM, none of their reviewers really stand out to me, so I doubt he's particularly hard on games there), but gamespot as a whole certainly doesn't come across as being hard on games.

When, say, Josh Becker is hard on a movie, it comes as no surprise because he's hard on all movies. But if a place that's typically easy on games is hard on one out of the blue, it comes across as arbitrary and maybe even a bit vindictive.

I can see, as an example, someone complaining about Alundra 2's graphics. I don't think they look great. During gameplay, they're at least functional, but technical flaws definitely appear during cinemas (much polygon glitching, minor characters have such undetailed models that they look like 3D stick figures).

One thing the review complains about is that part of the story involves rescuing a princess. Okay, I could agree with that being a cliche, and thus a problem... IF gamespot would consistently complain about stories involving rescuing princesses, which they don't.

In Alundra 2, it's not a major part of the story. But in Zelda 64, it IS the ultimate task of the game. But of course, they don't complain about it for that game.

I'll be honest: I'd be surprised if I ended up agreeing with FO that Alundra 2 is a masterpiece. (though I expect the game to continue to build as it goes). But Super Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker were games with some major flaws, but they pretty much got passes from gamespot. I think I can already say Alundra 2 is much better than Wind Waker.

EDIT: The weekend sleeping, that is.

Quote: It took me a day to figure out the "Take wing and leave this hungry earth" puzzle. I think part of my problem is that for some reason, I didn't know until that point in the game that you even could do what was needed to do to solve that.

The same exact thing happened to me when I first got to that signpost and it was for the same reason - I didn't know you could do that. I'm pretty sure the game tells you that you can, but I must've glossed over it or forgot.

With the exception of that puzzle, Alundra 2's puzzles weren't the kind that left me completely stumped and unable to figure out what to do. They were the kind where I could see or at leeast get a vague idea of what I had to do, but couldn't fucking believe they were actually going to make you have to do that. Then it would take me somewhere between 20-50 tries to be able to pull it off. I remember there being this one with a bunch of blocks where you jump on one, and it lowers/raises others, and I thought for sure that it was going to be impossible. There was a lot of optional stuff that stumped me, though. But I never did get all the puzzle pieces and I may have been missing other stuff, too, like heart containers.

I started the game over on Normal awhile ago, but it took me two tries to beat Mephisto's cat. I stopped and saved after that and never went back to it. Someday I will, but when I'm more in the mood for it.

Re: Game Progress Topic: Subtitle Free... Oops

Alundra 2 is much more friendly than Alundra 1, in terms of having a reasonable frequency of save spots.

Anyway, my mother had surgery today, and I took her to the hospital and waited for her there. In the meantime, I played The Legend of Zelda on GBA.

I completely cleared out the first 4 dungeons, and am almost finished with the 5th. I have 3 heart containers in the top row, and the middle strength sword. I also have just about everything that can be purchased (the blue ring, the blue candle, the bigger shield, some bait for level 7, etc).

I think this is almost certainly my favorite Zelda game. It gets a lot of credit for being influencial (more or less deservedly), but funnily, there are a lot of things in it that didn't influence later games, so it remains very unique. It's just about the only Zelda game that really cuts you loose and lets you explore. If you're getting your butt whupped in a dungeon, instead of just practicing against the enemies in it more, you could explore the over world more, and maybe find another heart container, or a better sword, or earn enough money for the blue ring, etc.

I've beaten this game several times, but I still don't remember it with perfect clarity, so when I find something in this game, it can occasionally seem like finding it for the first time (that'll probably be even more true for the second quest).

And of course, it's the most action oriented of the Zelda games, and one of the most action oriented adventure games, period. I remembered the darknuts, but Pol's voices are powerful enemies in this game, too.

I still don't think it's perfect -- for being somewhat action oriented, the boss fights still aren't very challenging. I almost wonder if it could be "accidental" rather than deliberate -- meaning, the designers put a bit of action here and there in the game, without necessarily thinking about it much -- that the game has the level of action it has. And a couple of things are cheap or irritating (like having to burn all those bushes near the end of the game). And the control is somewhat unyielding.

But I can't deny it's very good.

I took a break from Goldeneye to replay Zelda 2 (the version that came on that bonus Gamecube disc.) So far I've cleared the first two palaces. I still think this is the hardest of the Zelda games I've played, but I'm not finding it as difficult as I used to.

Beat the 5th palace, got the master sword.

Personally, I think Zelda 1 is the hardest Zelda, at least fighting-wise. In terms of puzzles and mysteries, I'm not sure. A lot of them are similar.

Re: ...

If you don't count the optional stuff, Alundra 2 doesn't really focus too much on "stumper" type puzzles. It's more of an action/skill test game.

But yeah, quite a few of the puzzle pieces stumped me...so badly in fact, that I played through the game three times before I got all of them. I wrote my own FAQ out of frustration with all of the existing ones. The official Bradygames guide is a particularly insulting rip-off. It just lists the areas of the game and then how many puzzle pieces are inside them. And it doesn't even get the one for the Howling Cave right. It says it's in the Ox Tank. On top of that, it doesn't tell you what room(s) they're in or how to actually go about getting them. Most of the times, it's not just as simple as walking in the room and opening the chest.

I think it's getting harder and harder for puzzles to really stump me in games. The only reason I got stumped on anything in Resident Evil 0 was because I didn't realize you sometimes have to rotate items around in your menu to be able to open them.

I also got slightly stumped on Max's chapter in Eternal Darkness because of an item that appears in a certain area that wasn't there earlier. After I explored the mansion and couldn't figure out how to progress the game, I kept thinking, "I know I've already been that way and there's nothing there."

I guess this is true for me as well, and it's obvious why.

I've said before that if a game is really challenging, you'll learn something from it. And if you really learn something from a game, you won't be stumped by the same sort of puzzle more than once.

But that's another reason why challenge is such an excellent standard for games. Regarding adventure games, challenge and originality are explicity linked. For a game to pull off a real stumper puzzle anymore would require the designers to come up with a puzzle that requires thinking in different ways than previous puzzles.

This is a problem with the Zelda series. Even when the solutions aren't exactly the same (and in Wind Waker, many of the solutions were exactly the same), they seem to use the same logic. It seemed like you could figure out the way Miyamoto thought.

Re: ...

Oh, and I skipped beating dungeon 6 but cleared out dungeon 7 last night. Level 7 seems easier. It had a few minibosses or boss reprisals (like three Dodongos at once) but the predominate enemies were just the boomerang throwers, who aren't difficult to deal with. And the boss was just a reprisals of the level 1 boss.

Maybe they thought to give you a break on enemies in that dungeon since it's probably harder to find than the other dungeons.

I always had the most trouble with Dungeon 6 in the original Legend of Zelda game because of all the damn Wizzrobes. I don't remember what item you get from Dungeon 6, but I'd put that one off as long as possible.

Re: ...

When I first played that game, I couldn't find Level 5. Without the flute from Level 5, I couldn't open Level 7. So I beat Levels 6 and 8 first.

I found 7 and 5 really easy after doing 6 and 8. I can't remember if the enemies in Dungeon 8 were typically tough (though if they were Darknuts they probably were), but I do remember having a bit of trouble with the four-headed dragon at the end.

Re: ...

My brother rented Shadow the Hedgehog. It's not as bad as I thought it would be. The control is a little bad, but you get used to the movement and camera controls, Shadow controls kinda fluidly, kinda feeling like the first Sonic Adventure game. The path branches to different levels depending on if you fulfill the good, evil, or neutral objective for that level, and for the obssesive compulsive gamer they made it so that it records which path you took through the game and each one has a unique title (there are at least 326 paths through). Despite what I previously thought, the game doesn't seem to be going down the angsty road that Jak went down. I don't have much more to say about this game other than most of your deaths will probably be from falling. One other thing to keep in mind is that despite all the good stuff I've said about this game, take it with a grain of salt. I know my taste in games is a little weird, and it might end up on the wall of shame next to sonic heroes.
