I started a new game of Crimson Sea 2 for no reason.
I opened up the second world and did 1 stage in it. I think I'll use both characters evenly this time, as opposed to using Sho 90% of the time...

I started playing that game, but was having a hell of a time getting into it. I beat the Turtle Boss, but I really wasn't enjoying myself.

The "talking" animations blew chunks.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

Played some more Doom 3, maybe 30 minutes worth.

It's basically following a pattern of having you work your way through dark, creepy areas in a linear way. Generally there are a few enemies in each room/corridor. They attack you and then you swiftly kill them. I've got a few weapons so far, but I'm not sure how many the game has. Right now, pistol, machine gun, shotgun. And I think you can hit things with the flashlight if you have to.

I found a bunch of ammo in a storage room, but you're still fairly limited in that. You can't waste shots all the time, at least.

There's this other thing the game does where you find PDA's as you go along, and you can read and/or listen to their messages, which give clues about stuff or are supposed to be interesting (but usually aren't).

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I think that my earlier post about Doom 3 made it sound like I wasn't enjoying it, but that's not really the case. It's very hard to describe my progress, though... my objective screen says that I need to gain access to the Alpha Labs, but I think it's been that way for a long time now. And there is a locked door I need to find a PDA to unlock. But it's not like you actually have to consider where to search, you just go where the game leads you... I'm progressing, slow and steady.

It's a little hard to play this game for a long time in one sitting. You're always tense, waiting for stuff to attack from any direction from the darkness. That's a neat feeling, but like I said, not for extended lengths of time.

A new type of enemy was just introduced. I'm not familiar with the series, so I don't know what anything is called. But this thing is pretty big and runs at you very quickly. It also has a fair amount of health, it seems. The way it was presented, I thought it was going to be a boss battle of some sort, but no... I'm wondering now if maybe this game doesn't even have any bosses.

Anyway, the game is challenging at times on Normal. I'm not having any trouble advancing, but I feel the strong need to be very cautious at all times. Enemies do lots of damage, and health packs aren't common enough that you can be at all careless.

The save anywhere nature of the game means that things don't get too rough, though.

I picked up Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life. I'm in the 10th day of Spring during Year 3. I grew another Yamato (there's yet another waiting to sprout). The nice thing about this plant is its ability to grow in all but Winter. Once I get the seeds, I can plant those immediately and have even more seeds ready for hybridizing.

If you hate long games, don't get this one. Mathematically, there's a potential 160 hours worth of gameplay (ignoring menu time and using the sleep glitch). This is one game that takes a lot of dedication.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

With the help of a walkthrough I finally got back on track in HoD, but it's still a crummy game. I got the Griffin's Wing.

I have button mashed every boss so far, and have only died against one. And as I said before, that was kind of a cheap shot (it recoiled me into its large, non-moving, curse-afflicting body and kept whapping Juste around), and I mopped the floor with it in the rematch. I've only died about four times in the entire game, which is even less than LoI.

The bosses are even shittier than LoI's. As Tweeter said, they're all either really big versions of a common enemy, or a knockoff of something from SotN. Not a one has really excited me like almost all the CotM bosses did. One was this armor that stood almost as tall as the screen who basically just moved back and forth, and would occasionally try to poke me.

Sure, unlike LoI this one actually has something resembling level design, but you have to travel through each room such a stupid number of times that it feels just like you keep traveling through the same room over and over. Plus, the second castle, instead of being upside down, is exactly the same except with different bosses and enemy placement. And sometimes they stick a new wall somewhere.

All the enemies, bosses and commoners, animate exactly like something from SotN. In fact, I've yet to see something that doesn't even look like it came straight out of SotN. CotM used a new graphic style, and I liked it. Another thing I liked was the low skeleton-to-everything-else ratio. In CotM, the archers were foxes, the flying things that threw spears at you were gargoyles, and the multi-legged thing with claw arms was a praying mantis. Here, the archers are skeletons, the flying things that throw spears at you are skeletons, and the multi-legged thing with claw arms is a skeleton. CotM also had bears, moths, faces with tentacles coming out of their mouths, leopards, wolves, griffons, bees, and possessed marionettes. HoD has skeletons, armors, skeletons, harpies, skeletons, fleamen, skeletons, skeletons, and skeletons.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I watched a bit of Godfather 2. I'm thinking about getting a little stereo for my corner of the room to hook my game/tv/audiovisual stuff to. DVDs are too quiet on my TV speakers (even with the volume turned all the way up).

I also played some Might and Magic. I don't think I gained any experience, because I got a game over, and didn't save previously. But I did some mapping. I finished mapping C-2, which was trivial. I used LEVITATE magic so the pits and ambushes no longer affected me. That's all there was to that.

I mapped a bit more of B2. This was the first time I used a location hint. A while ago, I found a hidden square with the hint "Raven's Lair, 9-9". Well, obviously, that means I have to go to coordinates (9,9), and since I was done with both N. Barrier and White Wolf and had nowhere else to go, I went looking for that.

I can't exactly say it was hard, but it was a little complicated. Getting there isn't straight forward. You have to go through a forest, and some of the trees are too dense to pass, some aren't, and some can only be passed in one way. I ended up circling way around the square I was trying to get to at least three times before finally reaching it. I guess it's comparable to finding the second dungeon in The Legend of Zelda.

That area is yet another cave, but it has a riddle! A real one, meaning you have to type in the answer. I got a game over before I got the answer, and that seemed like a good place to quit, so I'll think it over tomorrow (I have a few possible answers, but they seem too literal).

Riddles are great, yet somewhat neglected in adventure games and RPGs (maybe because of the need to type in the answer, and maybe because synonyms could screw that up. If the answer was "Spiderweb", would "Cobweb" also be acceptable? Or plain "Web"?). Off the top of my head, the closest to one I've seen was in the pirate ship in Super Mario RPG.

One of my favorite parts of The Hobbit was the riddle contest. I even liked it in The Dark Tower series. One time FO and I even asked each other some riddles.

One of the ones (which FO asked and I answered) from that time I remember best was

"My thunder comes before my clouds, my clouds come before my rain, and my rain burns all that it touches."

Yeah, it's a volcano.

I found my Final Fantasy Origins. It was somehow mixed in with the stack of new games.

I'm kind of in the mood for SMB3 now, too, but I'm not sure if I'd want to play the NES (plus: New connector = no worries about resets. minus: Would have to turn off M&M [though I have every reason to believe it will hold the save]) or All Stars version.

I've given thought to the GBA version, but it pisses me off that you'd need the E-Reader to get everything. I wonder if there's a chance for a perfectly accurate NES Classics port.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I forgot to mention... I saw today that in Now Playing 1, you mentioned playing through Mario 3. I couldn't find any follow-ups, though.

Quote: I decided to play the All Stars version of SMB3. I'm playing straight through, all the stages, without warping. Right now, I'm near the end of world 4.

I may post longer thoughts about my most recent run through this game. First of all, though: In another thread, I talked about a very subtle change in SMB's play control in All Stars. Super Mario loses his forward momentum after he breaks a brick. This does NOT happen in All Stars's Super Mario Bros. 3. At this point, I think the control is 100% identical in every way. I have a theory about why SMB was changed in that way.

I lost my All Stars saves the other day - the game wouldn't start right away, and whenever that happens, you have a chance of losing saves (At the very least, I've also lost Super Mario Kart saves this way, too). So, I guess this is an oportunity to rebuild those files.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I have to admit that I find Doom 3 to be pretty scary. Aside from the general "things jumping out at you" bit, it's also got creepy music and sound effects. I was walking through a dark corridor and heard the most horrible laugh...

It kind of cheats, though. You could explore every corner of a room, but things will still silently appear behind you, often at certain scripted points. So whenever you do something noteworthy, like unlock a door or find an item, it's good to get especially paranoid.

In terms of progress... like I said, it's hard to report, since the game isn't broken down much into levels. I think I just reached Alpha Labs west, and my objective is to find the elevator that leads to the 2nd level of Alpha Labs.

Encountered another new enemy, pretty sure it was some two-headed thing, and had to fight three or four of them at once.

I beat HoD, and got all three endings. All of them are retarded.

The "Lv. 2 Maxim" killed me once. Dracula was a total pushover. His second phase hit me twice, and yes I am ashamed.

And good God, the background in the Maxim/Dracula arena is AWFUL. It's some kind of painfully bright swirly thing that uses neon red on neon blue, and lime green on neon green. I wouldn't discredit that for being one of the reasons the Lv. 2 Maxim killed me once.

If there were any doubt IGA intentionally made this game 96% SotN, this discredits that. The entrance to the final boss is almost identical. Dracula is a pansy. The game even has two types of endings depending on if you killed Dracula or some jackass.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I just reached EnPro Plant, Sector 1. My goal is to find some kind of communication card to help with calling for help or something. I don't really care about the story at this point, just the experience of exploring and fighting enemies.

It was a fairly long session tonight, and so I checked to see how far in that was.... this is a very long game.

But some interesting things happened today. I got a chain gun which I haven't really used. I also fought spiders. Lots of spiders. They aren't hard to beat individually, but their numbers are always great.

I ran out of shotgun ammo for a while, and that's a really scary feeling in this game. I got used to the machinegun after a while, though.

And I also fought the game's first boss, a giant spider. I didn't really know what to do, so I just attacked it head on with the shotgun and won while taking a lot of damage.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

Harmony of Dissonance thoughts. Mostly a copy and paste of something I posted at VGF with a few things changed.

Where did this guy (http://nin.vgf.com/reviews/chod/index.htm) get the nerve to give this a 9.3? Okay, he said he never played Symphony of the Night (henceforth SotN). I guess that's part of the reason I hate this game, because it never once so much as hinted at being more than SotN with its spine and most of its meat ripped out to get it on the GBA. I did not find a single enemy that did not look like it was taken from SotN, and all the areas of the castle are swiped from SotN as well. Both games even have multiple endings depending on if you kill Dracula or some other dude. Okay, so IGA didn't rip the plot off SotN. Instead, he retconned Circle of the Moon (henceforth CotM), stole the plot, and changed the characters around. Screw you, IGA.

But for the most part it's not because HoD failed at being SotN. It it's because HoD failed at being a competent game.

Unlike Lament of Innocence (henceforth LoI), this one actually has something resembling level design. But you have to travel through the rooms such a stupid number of times in your quest to go back and forth, back and forth, back and forth through the whole castle just to figure out where to use your new Item-X that it kills it. Far to many of the rooms are little more than obnoxiously long hallways or stairways that may or may not have some weak enemies thrown in for a break in the tedium. And unlike SotN where the second castle was upside down and presented new challenges, the second castle of HoD is just like the first only with different enemy, boss, and item placements, and a new wall thrown in here and there.

The bosses suck, plain and simple. Every one of them. Sure, the game has them coming out the nostrils, but whether a really big version of a common enemy, or a dummed down SotN boss it lacks the beef to be more than a common enemy with lots of HP. They include a giant armor that stood as tall as the GBA screen but couldn't do more than walk back and forth and occasionally try to poke me, a couple Minotaurs with such a mindless battle pattern that I'd be ashamed of myself if I lost to them back when I first played this, and a giant Peeping Eye that... kind of just... sat there...

Only two of them killed me. One was a bit of a cheap shot, as it hit and recoiled Juste into its large, non-moving, curse-afflicing (curse slows down Juste and keeps him from dashing, so he couldn't escape) body and kept whapping him around. I mopped the floor with it in the rematch. The other was the second to final boss, and if you all saw the colors of the arena you'd be hard pressed to blame me. Other than that, I button mashed every one of them and beat them on my first try, including the final boss. When I tried button mashing the first boss of CotM, he beat the crap out of me.

The whip has a bunch of upgrades that range from worthless (the element ones) to required to beat the game (the Crushing Stone). It's a real pain to have to keep switching out one of the Attack boosting heads with the Crushing Stone. "Why not just leave it on the Crushing Stone if all the heads do is boost Attack" you ask? Because some dumbass made it so you have to charge the whip for a few seconds to be able to knock down a damaged wall and thus can't flail the whip around.

The reviewer also said how CotM didn't have any kind of graphical polish and HoD was glittering with it. No. Not only did Nathan actually move his arm while swinging the whip and have an animation for pushing a box while Juste just stands there like a statue as the whip flails around and pushes a box by running against it, the skeleton to everything else ratio of this game is even worse than in LoI. CotM had skeletons, armors, bears, foxes, gargoyles, moths, praying mantises, bees, possessed marionettes, panthers, wolves, griffons, and a ball of faces with tentacles coming out of their mouths. HoD has skeletons, armors, skeletons, armors, skeletons, witches, armors, fleamen, skeletons, armors, skeletons, skeletons, and skeletons.

CotM also didn't have these really nasty color schemes going. HoD has enemies that are this really bright pink, and they're almost entirely made up of that bright pink so it's hard to figure out what the hell they even are. Of course, you can be certain it's probably a skeleton. And usually it is, except one that's this really fish creature that's so poorly designed you want to kill it just to put it out of its misery. The final boss arena uses a bunch of swirling neon colors that makes the screen so difficult to look at that the semi-final boss may actually pose a threat.

The soundtrack sucks too. In the sound test there's a remix of Vampire Killer, but it's not so much an update as it is a desecration. Everything else is hardly memorable, or else irritating as nails on a chalkboard.

The dialogue of this game starts out confusing, then evolves into totally ridiculous. Why do all the IGA Belmonts have brain damage?

Long story short, this game doesn't have shit against CotM.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

Well, I've gone and beaten Final Fantasy 3, then I beat 4. I'm currently working on 5 and killing prototypes over and over to level up my jobs. I also went to gamecrazy after cashing some checks. I bough Kirby Canvas Curse, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Gran Turismo 4, Kingdom Hearts, got a new copy of Sly Cooper to replace my broken copy, got a new playstation controller and a sega genesis controller. The greatest thing about that trip though was that this kid was selling a bunch of games and was also including a playstation. He explained that the playstation didn't work, but they could have it if they wanted it. I decided to take the playstation though as I'm pretty confident in my ability to fix it.

I've also been playing Eternal Darkness, I beat Chatturga and Ulyaoth, and now I'm working on Xellotath's chapter. One wierd thing that been happening though is that whenever I open the case to get the game out, I swear that the game says Sanity's Redemption instead of Sanity's Requiem, which is what the fictional sequel is named in one of the insanity effects.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

In Doom 3, I reached Communications Transfer, Sector 2.

Progress has slowed a little bit because of an increase in difficulty. There were two kinds of new flying enemies introduced recently, and those are both fun and tricky to fight.

I recently reached an area where I was able to reach full health, get armor shards, and get a chainsaw to fight with. The chainsaw is pretty neat for fighting the weak zombie-like guys, but I'm not sure how it would work against anything else. Has to be better than hitting them with the flashlight, though.

I also got a plasma gun, which I used once or twice.

So far, I think this game is better than both Halo's.

Yeah, once you reach the point of having to fight horrible demons from hell by bopping them on the head with a flashlight, you just know you're headed for a Game Over. :)

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

Still playing MGS. Haven't felt like talking about games lately though.

I've forgotten how small this game is. It's really just a few buildings with lots of backtracking. ("I have to go ALL the way back there!?") It doesn't help that there are some tremendously slow sections, like crawling through long air vents and climbing the communications towers' staircases. I do remember not liking having to climb up and down the Metal Gear repeatedly in Disc 2.

I'm at the second sniper wolf fight. I died twice there, then I quit. I only have 2 rations though. I've gotten several game overs, but other than bosses, I haven't really been trying to stay alive (e.g., not equipping rations), since you respawn in the same room. I beat Psycho Mantis on my first try. All other bosses have beaten me at least once.

I hope there are no disc switching issues with the new PS2.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

Might and Magic seems to be going a little faster now since I can map more on a single outing now (as opposed to constantly warping out and returning to Sorpigal to save and heal).

I've mapped almost all of the remainder of the first floor of the Raven's Lair in one trip this morning. It was still somewhat time consuming: It may have take close to two hours to map that much. And I didn't come close to gaining a level, nor did I find any important items.

I didn't completely map that floor because near one corner is a "silver door" that repelled me.

Another remarkable thing was a room with a black and white checked pattern. Sorpigal had a clue about that, but suggested I needed to find a matching pair to do anything about it. (Interestingly, this floor was almost perfectly symmetric, except for the tunnels on the far left and right sides).

Also, I found a staircase to a lower floor, but haven't bothered with that at all yet. It's near the entrance, so I could easily try that on my next visit.

I played more Harvest Moon 64 and this time, I wasn't falling asleep. It seems like if I put it away for a few days, then pick it up again, I have more fun with it that way. Things really are winding down, though.

The most important thing that happened tonight is that I finally caught the Power Nut while fishing off the dock. That's the last one and I now have all of them. The only other things I hope to accomplish before the year is over is:

1. Have my dog win the race.

2. Get the better horse stable. I think I'll have enough medals by the end of the year to get it. I already have about 1500 and there are two dog races and another horce race left to go, so I'm sure I can win enough.

3. Revive the vineyard. If the bartender doesn't fork over the wine that lets you revive it by the end of the year, I'll assume it can't be done if Karen and Kai left town. And if that's the case, I'll forego it.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I don't think I'm ready for the basement of Raven's Lair yet. I got one game over from some multiheaded Hydras (despite that their actual sprite has only one head) and another from ... argh, I can't remember the monster's names, but they were some mountain giants that had grass growing on their shoulders. Those were set encounters, so I can probably expect the same if I'd ever go back.

I was capable of defeating some trolls (which I saw for the first time tonight). They only gave 1,600 experience, which is still far short of the Lich's and Mummies' 5,000. So, if I wanted to do dedicated level building, that's where I'd do it. (And I might soon. But I'd like to try at least a little more exploration first)

I remembered the trading game, and my note for that mentioned taking the scroll to a wizard in Erliquin (sp?). I haven't found that town yet, but I HAVE found a leprechaun that can warp me to various towns, so I got there that way.

It might be kind of a difficult area to map, though, because it has a lot of invisible barriers. I'm not sure how to map those yet.

Both that town and the basement of Raven's Lair also had a lot of secret passages.

Oops. Posted in GPT #12. If one of the mods could delete that, I'd be much obliged. Anyway, on to business...

Breath of Fire: I just got to the part where you start controlling Gobi. I'm in the mining town. This now makes the second time (that I recall) where I met a party member before they joined my party. Furthermore, they were both in the town of Auria. Eh, at least the game seems a little more interesting; I honestly didn't see them pulling the "Ditch the Party" thing in this game.

Animal Crossing: The bad news is that Mathilda moved out, so no more kangaroo. The good news is Gwen, a penguin which has the mean personality but was actually polite to me, moved in. She might not be as graphically impressive as her predecessor, but she's nicer.

That is a zombie topic and it hungers for living posts.

In Doom 3, I didn't play quite as much as yesterday, but I reached a new area... Communications, Sector 1. Note that Communications is a different part of the game than Communications Transfer.

I checked my overall status again... and still not even halfway though?! It feels like it should be approaching the end. An FPS generally shouldn't be longer than most RPG's. Good thing I don't find the gameplay as boring as Halo's. Yet.

Anyway, the last area had you riding this lift thing. You could have it move by itself or control it manually by pressing buttons on a control panel. I had to wander around in it trying to find the right way through the level. And sometimes things would attack while you were on it, which makes you extremely vulnerable. It wasn't a horrifyingly bad part of the game, but I hope there's nothing else like that later on.

That level also had a short sequence where you're on the surface with a limited air supply. Those make me nervous, which is the point, I guess.

Got to use the chainsaw a few more times! It's nice having something that doesn't run out of ammo and isn't also a flashlight.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I watched this thing on Animal Planet about Dragons, and if they really existed how they could fly and breath fire. It was actually kind of interesting. Though part of it was kind of confusing, because they never made it clear if the dragon corpse really was found, or if it was one big "what if" scenario. But hey, then I guess they did a really good job bringing the dragon to life, eh?

It said that it would actually be possible for a dragon to breathe fire by somehow mixing hydrogen with platinum. They used a machine to demonstrate it. Also, it could fly by filling flight bladders with the same hydrogen it uses to torch an enemy.

That scene with the two dragons flying into the sky, then locking talons and plummeting was absolutely beautiful. They showed it about three times, once during the actual feature, once during the short "making of" thing at the end, and at the end of the credits, and every time I saw it I almost cried. And every time I think about it, I get a little emotional. No sarcasm, folks.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

In Stephen King's Eyes of the Dragon, Dragons had gills on their neck that were used as the intake for fire breathing (I guess if they'd breath normally, without creating fire, they'd use their mouth or nose).

It's funny that you mention that, because I asked FO some things about what she thought about dragons the other day (for what reason I can't remember).

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I just realize how poorly I wrote how the dragon in the program flew and breathed fire.

According to the program, when the dragon eats, bacteria in its gut make hydrogen which is then channeled to the flight bladders. Since hydrogen is lighter than air, this enables the dragon to fly. The dragon then eats some platinum, using molar-like teeth to grind it up. This next part confuses me, but to shoot fire it somehow gets the platinum (which seems to be store in the pits of the dragon's molars) to react with the hydrogren it shoots out of the flight bladders. It also has a false palete like crocodiles have so that the fire doesn't backfire into its lungs. And if it shoots too much fire, it can't fly anymore.

They had that Mo Rocca guy you occasionally see on Leno doing some stuff between the ads and the program. One of them was him going around and asking people if the Western Zodiac and the Chinese Zodiac fought, who would win. But they kept bringing up how the Western Zodiac has a goat, a crab, and a lion, and how the Chinese one has a hare, a rat, and dragon, and I'm here yelling at the TV "And a tiger!" I just now realized they also had an ox, but I didn't remember it last night.

Actually, in the Chinese Zodiac, I'm a tiger.

Which reminds me, when my brother and I were watching LotR: The Two Towers awhile ago, I noticed the animation of the dragon's flight wasn't very realistic.

The dragon would slowly pump its wings, but kept a level flight. I think would should have happened was, the dragon should dip until it pumps its wings, and then should quickly bob back up.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I just remember something else I didn't like about the program.

At the end, it shows some soldiers climbing to the dragon's roost to kill it. Worst soliders ever. There's about ten men versus one dragon, and even though there's room for at least five of them to fight they take turns walking up to it, dancing around like Vader and Obi-Wan, then randomly swinging their sword around a couple times, then getting bopped by the dragon. A couple of them used a torch, and one or two used a spear. I actually yelled "You guys suck!" at the TV.

I found Agar in Erliquin. I found him the last time I played, but because my Vellum Scroll was stolen, and because I hadn't paid attention to that, I didn't know it was him. But tonight I got a clue in the Erliquin tavern that that was him, so I went back to Sorpigal's basement, got the Vellum Scroll again, and took it to Agar. Next, I have to take it to Dusk. I haven't been there yet, but I think it might be possible to warp there from Sorpigal, too.

I found R-Type Final. It was resting right next to my PS2. D'oh. But my PSOne was also resting next to my PS2, and covered the game.

I had earned the Cleared in One Life note a long time ago. I also have a mere 73 ships. And I've barely done anything in the AI championship. That stores your win/loss record, so my inclination is to reset any time I'd lose, to try to get a 100% win rating. But that might be a stupid waste of time (well, assuming I bother with it at all at some point in the future). For the heck of it, I gave the next fight three tries tonight, and lost all three times. I wish I could make the stupid ship charge, and then shoot as soon as the charge is filled, but I don't know if that's possible.

PLOT TWIST'D

I forgot how to get out of the room and died. Then I got out of the room, saved, and quit.

Crawl, for R-Type Final's AI mode, have you tried messing with the parameters? You can do something like set the primary strategy to wave cannon, which makes it fire more. It still does dumb things, like charging for two seconds and firing, or charging up fully, waiting for 2 minutes, and firing at nothing. But I amassed about a 50% win ratio by using that strategy with the strike bomber.

Yeah, I've fiddled with the settings, but I wasn't 100% sure what they did. Like if I had the shot/charge setting all the way to "charge", would that mean the ship would never use weak shots (which I might want)? Or would it mean the ship would just hold its charge useless for too long (which I wouldn't)?

One ship I fought had a lock-on charge, so I tried adjusting the setting for my ship to stay farther away, but it didn't really seem to obey the directive.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I mentioned that I was thinking about getting the Thrustmaster Dual Trigger controller for PS2 and PC.

Well, I did, and I'm just a little disappointed. It's a solid controller overall, easy to grip, left and right triggers in addition to 4 standard L and R buttons. Dual analog, and some kind of turbo feature. I can't remember whether it has force feedback or not.

The problem is that the d-pad sucks for actually playing a game where you need to use it exclusively. It's just not sensitive enough, so if you need to quickly move left and right, it'll probably mess up unless you press extremely hard.

Using an analog stick works surprisingly well for sidescrollers, and the analog does have a nice feel to it here, but it's not quite the same.

Fortunately, since most PS2 games don't make much use of the d-pad except for menus and such, it should be a fine controller for that system.

I actually played about an hour of Kingdom Hearts. Most of that time was spent messing around, dueling the Final Fantasy characters, etc. It's kind of pleasant playing a game where demons aren't trying their hardest to murder me during every single minute of play.

The controller is perfect for the PS2, so I'm definitely glad I bought it. Analog sticks move much more easily than on a normal PS2 controller and you can make those triggers do the actions of any of the normal buttons. It's just so comfortable to hold in comparison.

And it's funny how much a little added comfort can improve the gaming experience. I just hated the old one so much... especially the way it rattled when you moved it the wrong way.

This controller doesn't seem to vibrate, but as I've said before, I think it's a highly overrated feature to begin with.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I took a nap with FO this evening, and slept longer than I probably would have intended to. So, anyway, I didn't play any Might and Magic tonight.

I did play some R-Type Final, though. I at least beat the first two classes in AI mode (Novice and Normal, I think). I don't recall if I beat any ships in the next class. Anyway, it was kind of boring, and I lost interest very quickly.

I decided to try to unlock more ships. I think I may try to unlock the rest in order. The first gap was after the Escort Time (a fairly normal R-9 type ship that, when the beam is charged, has two phantom ships appear slightly above and below you).

I meant to just play through the game, but somehow screwed up on the stage 5 boss without knowing it and inadvertently took the route to F-C. I died there pretty quickly. Despite playing that whole game with the Escort Time, it didn't unlock the next ship.

Similar to the AI mode, playing the full game is kind of boring. The idea of playing through some of the stages in this game again (like stage 1) sort of repulsed me.

Fortunately, there is a saving grace. You can (I emphasized this in some older game progress posts; before that, I had a tendency to forget this fact) unlock ships in score attack mode.

So, there is maybe one more worthwhile thing I could try with this game, which is try F-C on higher difficulties. I played it on Human with the Escort Time at first, and that, coupled with the full game, unlocked the Princedom pretty quickly.

I spent the rest of the night playing with the Princedom. It didn't unlock a ship, though. I was curious how much time I put into that ship without unlocking another, and found that what I did tonight was enough to put the Princedom in my top 10 most used ships. At just over 38 hours total, and a little more than 2.8% spent on the Princedom, that means I used that ship for more than an hour without unlocking anything.

Anyway, I broke 100,000 points on that stage, which is about a third to half way through. Now that I mention it, I'm not 100% sure I beat F-C on Kids (the score attack summary doesn't mention this). To the contrary, I'm about 80% sure I didn't, but my high score is high enough that I must have been very close.

The biggest reason F-C on Human is harder than previously is that it adds some more of those blue-green ships (I probably should look up their name in the bydo lab...) that park and then shoot white projectiles that can turn 90 degrees to follow you.

Also important, I suppose, is that when I first beat F-C, my goal was simply to beat it, so I used the ship that I felt was best for the job (and sheesh, now, off the top of my head, I'm not even sure what I used). Now, I'm stuck with using ships not because of how good they are, but because they should unlock another ship.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I didn't feel like finishing MGS tonight, so I didn't play.

For R-Type Final, IIRC, I used the TX-10 to beat F-C. If that's not the right name, it's the ship that's similar to the RX in Delta. It's blue beam was useful for that part where the enemies fill the screen.

Also, the ship after the Princedom (King's Mind) is one of the two ships with the longest previous ship time requirements. (The other is one of the R-13 variants.)

The King's Mind was the 98th ship I unlocked--the last before the final three, special ships. I went about unlocking by filling my hangar with ships that would unlock new ships (according to the museum). Then I just alternated between those ships as I pleased. It made the longer requirements (i.e., 60 minutes and above) more bearable, as I didn't feel like I had to play with a ship for an hour or two straight.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I may have used a TX ship on F-C, since I seem to remember using the yellow weapon that has two beams that scissor back and forth, and that's similar to the R-X.

I believe I've already unlocked all the R-13 ships. I think I took about 3 hours to unlock the last one (that information is probably in a recently unearthed game progress).

I don't mind playing over an hour straight with one ship if I actually have something to do with it, like F-C. But I think I'd be annoyed with playing the full game more, even if I could frequently switch between newly unlocked ships.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

In Doom 3, I finished the Monorail Skybridge and reached Recycling Sector 2. That's still only 18 of 39 areas complete. Just can't get over how long they made this game.

There was a new enemy introduced. It's like a skeleton that shoots rockets at you. There weren't too many of them, though. Also, there was a funny training video thing you could watch on your PDA. I liked how it made fun of the steam that's always coming out all over the place, and the descriptive term "green goo".

I think I'm abusing the quicksave feature a little, but the game makes me paranoid.

I wrote down my most used R-Type Final ships (but then forgot to take them here).

Anyway, the most used one was the Bydo System Gamma. There's a good chance that that was the ship I used for F-C for the first time. I think my next most used ship was the T-X.

I finished all of the master thief sprints in Sly Cooper. I find it kinda strange that I beat them all so quickly, especially since many people gripe about how hard they are. I mean, my gaming skills leave a lot to be desired, but any minigame that's talked about as being so hard, I can usually beat it with a minimum of effort.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I just cleared out Recycling Sectors 2 and 3 and reached Monorail.

There were a couple new enemies... one kind is quick and jumps at you, but is not that hard to deal with. The other is this enormous thing that shoots rockets and refuses to die. There were three in one room, and I used up so much ammo on them. Maybe that was considered a boss battle, I don't know...

Monorail is part 20 of 39. Still a long way to go.. but maybe I can push forward a little farther later today.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

Found my R-Type Final sheet. My 15 most used ships, at this point in time (with ~38 hours on the clock)

ShipPercent UsedCode NameNotes
1. B-1D315.1Bydo System GammaBeam weapon is three powerful homing shots
2. TX-T9.2EclipsePumped up version of the R-X from R-Type Delta, with a powerful concussive beam
3. R-9S6.2Strike BomberThe normal R-9 from R-Type III... only with a super powerful beam
4. R-13A26.1HadesThe R-13 was arguably the most powerful ship in Delta. Not any more. I used this one so much probably because it was unnecessary for unlocking a ship
5. R-904.6RagnarokThe Shadow Force ship from R-Type III. Uses the Hyper rapid fire beam
6. RX-104.4AlbatrossDelta ship. I think the RX series is more powerful in this game relative to the R-13 series.
7. R-9A4.1ArrowheadThe original, default, plain ship
8. B-1D3.9Bydo System AlphaWeaker than the gamma, but even with only one homing shot this is still a powerful ship
9. R-9AD22.8PrincedomRecently unlocked, used so far just for unlocking
10. R-9AD2.7Escort TimeFor unlocking
11. R-9022.5Ragnarok IIBased on the remaining ship from R-Type III. With 7 levels of charge, this ship has the most powerful beam in the game. It can kill any enemy with one hit*
12. OF-32.5GarudaHas similarities with the ship from Image Fight
13. R-9A32.3LadyloveI don't remember this ship, so it must have just been used for unlocking
14. R-13A2.3CerberusFor unlocking
15. R-11A1.6Future WorldFor unlocking

*Even the final boss? Well, there are two final bosses. For F-A, you can't use any ship's normal beam weapon. On the other hand, for any ship, you only need one charged shot to kill it.

For F-B, you can only use one of two ships, so the Ragnarok II is ruled out. At least that's true for the full game; it might be possible to use it during score attack.

For any other boss, yes, a single attack will be fatal.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I beat MGS tonight. The escape scene pissed me off. It took me at least 5 tries to beat. First off, except for my successful attempt, I only found 2 of the 3 rations. My last try I didn't need the extra one, but I also figured out how to use 1st person view in the jeep. When I was in 3rd person view, my bullets would not hit Liquid when his jeep was along side me. That sersiously pissed me off. I'd be sweeping the gun back and forth over him, and all of the bullets went over his head. First person view seemed to remedy that.

I saw the otacon ending for the first time. There was a 2001: A Space Odyssey joke that did make me laugh.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

Tweeter, are you playing Normal or did you switch to Easy-Automatic? What moves have you bought?

As for Metal Gear Solid, aside from the big plot hole, the genetics discussions are lame. (Speaking of, am I the only one to notice that MGS is a ripoff of the movie Twins? Right down to the "I am genetic garbage" stuff.") Liquid complains about having all the recessive genes while Snake got the dominant genes. First off, this means that they are not genetically identical, as is claimed throughout the entire game.

Second, unless there's some sort of funky post-hoc genetic engineering explanation involved, its assumed that recessive genes are weak. Whether a gene is dominant or recessive has nothing to do with the quality of its phenotypic expression. For instance, the gene for Huntington's disease is dominant.

From what I could tell, some of the other scientific and historical discussion was pretty accurate, so why would the genetics be so poorly researched?

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

Another thing about that was that Liquid kept talking about symmetry and asymmetry. One problem is that it's never actually mentioned what was symmetric or not; it's as vague as the "flaw" in that crappy Armitage III anime. But he also says that having the symmetry is a weakness, when in actuality, symmetries are a sign of health. That's why people have two eyes, two ears, and why things we have one of, like a nose or mouth, are in the middle.

Another great line was when Merle explains how she snuck her gun. "Women have more hiding places then men." So I guess she hid a gun in her vagina.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

100'd all the stages in World 4, have about 5 in World 5 done. I also have all the bosses in worlds 5 and 6 100'd.

I had about 50 lives when I decided to get 100 on Baby Bowser. I was originally planning on turning the game off afterwards anyway, then then I ended up doing some more work after having my 50 go back to 3.

I died once against him, but that was a suicide. I had all 100 points when I entered, got hit by a fireball, lost three of the Star Points, so I just jumped off a cliff. I beat him in the rematch and kept all my points.

The boss that took me the most time to get 100 on was Hookbill the Koopa. I kept getting hit, and the only way to die in that battle is to let Mario wail for 25 seconds, something I can't stand (even if I mute the TV, the wait is annoying) so I'd always beat him, then redo his stage.

Speaking of sound, this game has volume issues. I often can barely hear the music but the sound effects are deafening.

About biological symmetry, there's a type of owl that has one of its ears higher on its head than the other. It somehow helps it detect prey better.

I think the thing she hid was a key card, unless there's another time she says something like that.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I think she was talking about the security card, not a gun.

I wondered about the symmetry thing, too. It wasn't clear what he was specifically talking about, as "symmetry" could mean any one of a number of things.

Realted to the symmetry being an indicator of health, one interesting (and supposedly replicable) finding is that women prefer the scent of symmetric men during the most fertile phase of their reproductive cycle.

Maybe he meant that organisms that are symmetric in their genetic makeup (i.e., all members of the species are similar to one another) would be unable to develop adaptive advantages to overcome environmental hardships (i.e., no natural selection). Quote: Maybe he meant that organisms that are symmetric in their genetic makeup (i.e., all members of the species are similar to one another) would be unable to develop adaptive advantages to overcome environmental hardships (i.e., no natural selection).

IIRC, Liquid Snake was whining about he himself being too symmetric, so that explaination couldn't apply to that.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I looked up the script, and actually it could support that intepretation. HOWEVER, the game would still be wrong.

Complaining that there's not enough genetic diversity in the genome soldiers would be like me complaining that I don't have enough genetic diversity. Well, I don't, I don't have any diversity at all; I only have enough genes to make one person. Yet that doesn't hurt me (or any other individual).

The diversity comes from the rest of the human race. So, if the genome soliders mated with normal humans, their offspring would be diverse, while at the same time passing on their genes.

But really this is a stupid thing to worry about anyway. There are almost no evolution pressures on humans at this point in time. And why should they worry that the next plague should wipe them out but leave some other people alone?

Re: ...thoughts as they come me...

Well, there are very few underwater segments. If you've already seen some, you've seen most of them.

I worked on Might and Magic. I mapped a bit more of Erliquin, most of it I think, but it's not possible to map all of it until I can pass barriers. Oh, and of course my Vellum scroll was stolen again.

It doesn't make much difference. I warped to Dusk, and the first enemy party I met there (which gave me a game over) was composed of the same enemies (8 headed hydras) that are in the basement of Raven's lair. I wasn't ready for them there, so I'm not ready for them in Dusk.

I just explored some of C3. I had about half a dozen squares mapped there previously, which I passed through on my way to Algary a while ago. This time I started from where FLY drops you off. I explored some mountains where you're ambushed by many Wyvern parties. They're fairly powerful, but I still killed several of them. I also found a Wyvern den, and killed the enemies there (Wyverns and a 8 Headed Hydra) and got some items, including a Wyvern's Eye. But I pushed my luck and was eventually killed by a Wyvern party, so didn't save any of my experience or items from that outing.

Wyverns tend to give about 1000~2000 experience per fight, which isn't bad, but still isn't as much as the Lich/Mummy party.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

In Doom 3, I reached Delta Labs Level 2 North. That's area 24 of 39. I wish I could check and see how many hours I've put into this so far, but I know it's a lot. Well into the traditional length of RPG's. And definitely an example of a game being FAR longer than the content allows for. It's like if they took SMB1 and made it go to World 70 instead of World 8, without any interesting level designs or added challenge to make it worthwhile.

That said, the game is still fun, in a way. That feeling of always being tense is diminished, but still there, and so it's always at least a bit exciting to explore new areas. It's one of those games where it's kind of pleasant just to say you've made progress. In terms of storyline, the odds are so much against your lone marine that it's satisfying to see him survive to achieve another little goal.

I mentioned that I was abusing quicksaves, but the game doesn't exactly play fair, either. Say you're walking down a corridor, then with no warning at all, no visual or audio clues, you're attacked from behind or from above and take too much damage to realistically continue the level. It's one thing to be cautious, it's another thing to constantly be spinning in circles, looking up and down, trying to avoid these ambushes.

Easier to quicksave after each room or tricky enemy and be done with it. This game is too long to be trying to play the stages again and again, trying to memorize where each thing attacks from and when. You'd be at it for 70 hours.

Mild spoiler:

Poochie Ain't Stupid probably is the hardest bonus stage in the game, despite being the first one. A Castle Masterpiece Set is certainly the easiest, despite being the last one.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I reached Delta Labs Level 3 South. Delta Labs are pretty long, it seems. A large portion of the last level took place in complete darkness. As in, with the flashlight lowered and weapon eqipped, you could see NOTHING. That was a bit tough. There were some, story developments, I guess you could call them. Explaining why there are endless hell demons in every nook and cranny.

So I'm in... area 26 of 39. I guess the end is sort of, almost, kind of in sight now. Looking forward to playing the next game...

Spent a while fighting Blades in DMC. Bought Inferno skill. Fought more Blades, cuz I like them....
:O
Haven't went back to Nightmare 3 yet. I think I might use maybe ONE Holy Water, simply because him coming back after you seemingly kill him is the same as him cheating, imo...and turnabout is fair play, damn it.

I later started a second file, and "unlocked" easy auto. Played in easy auto for maybe 10 minutes. Man, does that mode SUUUCK. Dante does crap you don't want him to do all the time! He randomly uses high time and spontaneously aims at enemies, which slow him down for a second. I doubt I'll ever touch easy auto again......

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

Finished Delta Labs L3 S. There was only one really challenging spot. You're attacked by three powerful enemies at once. The first appears in front of you, then after about a 4 second delay, another one appears behind you, and then a third comes from who knows where. After three attempts, I figured out a good place to run to, so I wouldn't be surrounded when they showed up.

I think I'm getting pretty close to the levels that take place in Hell.

Don't tell me that most of Doom 3 involves running around levels that look like a hospital (which is what it looked like from screenshots).

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I don't know if Hospital is the first thing that comes to mind. More like an abandoned military base/research facility.

With a power failure. And demons.

These screens are pretty much how the whole game looks, with the exception of a few areas. And from the screens I've seen, Hell looks rather like you'd expect.

These are from the PC version, but I was too lazy to switch to the Xbox section and there aren't a lot of differences anyway.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

Anyway, rather than posting progress in Might and Magic (okay, I mapped some more of C3), I thought I might post some concerns I might have about the game.

-Unlike Final Fantasy, I don't see much replayability coming from using different classes in your party, despite that Might and Magic has more character slots, at least as many classes, and different races.

Some things would clearly be more difficult, but perhaps not impossible (example, you might be able to get along without a thief if you were able to survive traps constantly being sprung on you). But I don't think it's even possible to play a game without a wizard, because you need a wizard's spell in at least one area.

Mitigating factor: I don't know much of this to be the case for a fact (I guess you might at least be able to try something like a no fighter party), and it might be too early to worry about it anyway. Lack of selectable party members didn't hurt Final Fantasy 4.

-The battles seem to take a really long time.

To compare with Final Fantasy 1, there are a few reasons for this. For one, you can't run in M&M if you're just getting sick of battles. You can run, but it is only for use as a last resort, because it will send you back to the beginning of an area.

In FF1, if you have a wizard, you'll get (no later than a third of the way into the game) spells that can attack every enemy in the party. So far, spells can't do that in M&M. If you attack the front row, you'll only damage three enemies maximum. If you attack the back row, there's a chance you'll attack more than the three visible enemies, but you'll never attack the front row. And eventually the spell will peter out, and enemy parties in M&M can be larger than in FF1 (which maxed out at 9 enemies).

I also think the battle speed is slower than in FF1 anyway. M&M has three text speeds, slow, medium and fast, and I naturally have it set to fast. FF1 has, IIRC, 8 speeds for battle text. I used to set it to 6 or so for readability, but lately I've been setting it to 8, and I think that is faster. Plus, it seems like FF1 has a more efficient way of putting information on the screen. I think it usually just says the characters name, then the damage delivered. If the enemy dies, it says "Terminated". M&M, however, uses complete sentences.

Mitigating factor - The enemy encounter rate is thankfully not too high. Set encounters usually don't respawn so long as you don't leave the area or die. Battles, even if they are long, still can have the potential to be enjoyable (they can be challenging and require some thought or planning).

-Battles almost always have the same attack sequence.

For me, this is Crawl [knight], Sage [Robber], Rigel [Wizard], Vrynna [Cleric], Sonja [knight], Lilac [Archer]. Every single time, in a loop.

For a brief period of time, a different weapon equipped on Sonja shifted her position in the line up to directly after Crawl, but a more powerful weapon quickly came along and she reverted to her former spot.

Mitigating factor - Well, this does take some spontaneity away, but it doesn't bother me too much yet.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I think one thing that could make me enjoy the game more (and could cancel out some of the effects of the above concerns) would be if I could get started playing this game earlier in the day. I feel kind of out of it right now.

Anyway, I found Kilburn, who was indeed near the Wyvern peaks.

In other news, I've devised a challenging math problem for myself that I can use my graphing calculators for. For one part of the process, I foolishly left a calculation running on the HP49G+ for over an hour (maybe more like two or even three). It still hadn't finished, and when I tried to interupt it, it wouldn't stop running (I had to hit the reset button) and the batteries were drained.

I eventually finished the calculation by using a TI 89 emulator set to run at high speed on the PC. It still took quite a while (though at least didn't use any batteries). I wonder how long it would take to run on something like Mathematica.

Oh yeah, and I also got to summer in my third year of Harvest Moon: AWL. Now my trees are dropping fruit like crazy, so it won't be long until I make the final structure purchases and start getting some butter and cheese.

But I still have to impregnate my cow, meaning another year of waiting for non-goat milk. :(

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

So I found out I had today off and stayed up all night playing Doom 3. I made it through the three Hell levels and am now back at the Delta Complex... and I'm nearing the end of that stage, too. Hell was... like you'd imagine. Lots of lava, horrible enemies, etc. Also some jumping parts which don't ever work especially well in an FPS.

Difficulty has gone up. They took all my weapons and ammo away. All that extra work, being so careful to try and conserve them... so I'd have enough for late in the game... and I was wasting my time. Damn it.

So right now, I'm at level 32 of 39.

I ran into this really tough section just now and was getting so frustrated that I decided to stop for the day. But I think maybe I should've been using this Soul Cube weapon... thing... that I got. I checked online and it seems that for every 5 regular enemies you kill, the cube gets charged and you can fire it to instantly destroy any enemy you want.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

My archer and wizard finally caught up to everyone else's level. That gave my archer three hits, and with the great bow she's now about as strong as my knights. She also has level 2 black magic.

Which means you don't need a wizard for that one thing I mention; an archer would suffice (though you'd need a little higher level). Even if you wanted to do something crazy, like an all cleric party, I guess you might allow yourself to bend the rules in that dungeon a bit (much like how that guy that used the solo black belt party bent the rules until he got to level 4 or so) and temporarily swap out a party member for a preset wizard in another town.

I mapped a bit more of B2. I've been using FLY magic to drop me down in different parts of the overworld, so I can map brand new areas without going through older stuff first. It seems to make exploration a little more interesting for now. FLY always drops you in the same location for any given grid (example, in C2, it always drops you outside of Sorpigal), and in B2 it drops you in an area you wouldn't be able to reach by walking through B2 from Sorpigal's area! (Though maybe you could take a long route around).

There, I found and solved another riddle!

"Conqueror of worlds, maker of dreams, the greatest force of all, yet elusive it seems."

Answer: Love

I got it on my first try, and FO said she did, too. (The only other possibility to me would have been "Imagination", which FO doesn't think fits.)

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I was going to mention that I was enjoying watching DBZ again. While the early episodes are now uncut with the voice acting redone, it's more that I haven't seen them in a while than anything else. And that the show did get worse and worse as time went on. I'm kinda embarassed to admit watching it most of the time... but hey, if I admitted to watching Captain Planet, I'd say DBZ isn't exactly a big deal. 8)

I'm upset about the DVD's, though. I figured that it might be worth it to buy a season/saga or two. But they're charging $20+ for each disc, and there's only three episodes. It makes it flat out impossible for me to own them. And I thought Star Trek DVD prices were outrageous.

Speaking of DVD's, I got those three I ordered today. The ST Generations case was a tiny bit damaged. One of the plastic tabs that holds the case closed had proken off. But the one tab seems to be able to handle the job of both, so I'm not going to try replacing the case or returning the movie. Assuming there's nothing wrong with the disc... it did come out of it's holder and was rattling around in there a bit. Yes, this thing was new, too. If it was resealed somehow, it was very convincingly done.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I've tried exploring a few different areas of Varn (and found the Hawkseye cave), and most of the enemies in those areas were pretty easy to deal with, but I kept coming across a super-powerful party out of nowhere that wiped me out.

So, I think I should level up a little to deal with this. For some reason, the Mummy party in B2 now only regenerates once per trip, and lately they've only had three or four mummies. That's about 4,300 exp, or 8,600 per trip, which still isn't bad.

I just hope that one extra level will be enough to let me fully explore some areas I've gotten previews of. A couple more trips should level up at least a few characters. But the level after that will probably take a long time to earn.

Doom 3 is so long that it's almost cruel. I have this list of areas and I know I'm getting close to the end, but it just keeps going. See, I reached Central Processing (area 33 of 39) today. And I swear, it was the length of two or three normal areas.

I have pretty much mastered the use of the Soul Cube, fortunately. Once it's charged, I save it for something that would be especially brutal to fight normally. One-hit destruction of these things is nice.

Devil May Cry:
Bought Rolling Blaze, and now I have all of Ifrit's skills. Ifrit is fun to mess around with, but I prefer a sword 75% of the time.

Went near the shipwreck to fight Shadows, the enemy I had the most problems with before. Since the area that still has Shadows has 2 of them at a time, I thought this would be an excellent way to practice...and it is! I can now handle Shadows without nearly getting killed! Wh00t wh00t...

My healthbar is about 1 and a half lengths long.
Say, either of you fine gentlemen know how to beat the secret mission with the skulls lined up? I know you have to jump off of them, but I never can quite hit the blue orb piece...do I have to buy the stupid 4k double jump?

I prefer Ifrit due to its high damage moves. Inferno and Meteor 2 > all. Air Raid is a good move for lower difficulties, but is almost useless for bosses on DMD.

For the skull mission, just make sure you're lined up straight with them. As you jump off the last skull, you'll need to jump back toawrds the start of the staircase. You do not need Air Hike to get it.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I'll bet all my game progress posts where I played through DMC on Normal and Hard recently are gone, huh?

IIRC, one of the most important things was lining up the skulls. I walked in tight circles on the ground near them until the camera was how I wanted it.

I also think it's possible you have to switch direction after the final jump to get the blue orb (ie, jump backwards rather than forwards). I'm not 100% positive about that (I might be thinking of something else), but you might be able to verify it by looking at the skulls from the side.

In Might and Magic, I'm embroiled in Hawkseye. The dungeon itself seems straightforward and even predictable enough: A regular series of hallways forms a grid, in which are 16 rooms with spinning polyhedrons. Some are set (so far, all to numbers greater than 10), some can be set by the player (to a number between 1-9). I haven't found all the rooms yet, but I'm guessing that the ones that are set will somehow be a clue to those that aren't.

So, this is one of the first of the promised puzzles I've encountered.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I've finished Central Server Banks and reached Site 3 (Area 35/39). There was a boss battle in the one I completed. It's large and pretty slow. You basically just have to shoot down his weapon before it gets close to you (it can be an instant kill if it hits you directly) and generally just attack and move. It was easy to restore health afterwards, but I used up all the chaingun ammo. Got a new weapon though, the strongest in the game. Gotta save it's ammo for very important things.

There was a boss in Hell that I forgot to mention which was a little more interesting. It was large and at first invincible. It sends out these seeker things which fly around and don't do very much. You're told that destroying the seekers makes the boss vulnerable. But that's not really a helpful hint. What really happens is that when you destroy all the Seekers, it summons some more. And during that summoning, a vulnerable part appears for you to target.

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I cleared out the Hawkseye cave! (Explored literally every single square - you don't even need the warp spell to do that - and solved the puzzle). It was fun, and a good thing to do at my current level. I probably could have even done it without gaining a level; I guess I just was unlucky in my first trip there.

The unique reward for the puzzle was earning +2 on intelligence. You also earn some gold, gems, and experience (2000 points). Despite that experience, and that from all the enemy parties I fought there, I'm not anywhere close to the next level (not even my two characters that are behind the others).

It was probably fairly obvious that the puzzle there was a magic square. FO asked me how I knew what numbers everything should add up to.

You can forget about the diagonals for this. Then, every number 1-16 is used twice, once for the rows, once for the columns. If you add the numbers 1-16 twice, you'd therefore get the sum of all the rows and columns. But every row and column has to add up to the same thing, so if you do that arithmetic, you can divide that double sum by 8 (or the single sum by 4) to get the number the rows and columns have to add to.

That's not difficult to do, but there is a formula for adding sequential numbers. 1 + 2 + 3 + ... + n = (n^2 + n)/2. So, the number the rows have to add to is (16^2 + 16) / 8

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

Unless there's a puzzle in the area of Perilous Peak I never finished exploring, the Hawkseye Cave puzzle is the only one in the game I never solved on my own. I knew you had to make all the rows and columns add up to the same number, but I didn't know what number it was. I tried various numbers, but nothing worked, so I finally gave up.

Years later, long after I'd beaten the game, I bought the Ultimate Might & Magic Archives for the PC. That came with a disk that had a copy of a Might & Magic solution book that you could send away for back when the PC and NES versions were first released. That had the solution for the Magic Square. All I did was get the number from the book and then figured out the square on my own and finally solved the puzzle.

----

Harvest Moon 64

Four things of significance have happened:

1. My kid has begun walking around and I can talk to him and give him food, now.

2. My cow Smoosh won the cow fair, so now all three of my cows are giving golden milk. (Kent had suggested I enter Chance, but Chance was already giving golden milk for winning the previous year, so it was pointless to enter that cow.)

3. I bought another cow so I'd have another one to enter in next year's fair. I named her Pibby.

4. I finally got chosen to be next year's Harvest King. I planned to wrap up this game tonight, but now I want to play through one more year so I can do the things the Harvest King gets to do.

Another thing odd I noticed is that Karen's parents are working out in the vineyard. I've never seen them do that before. I had given up on getting the bartender to give me the old wine that'll let me revive the vineyard, but it looks like there still could be hope...

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I mapped the lower left corner of C3. There weren't a lot of squares there, but it still took a long time.

First, there were a lot of one way paths to the adjacent grid (B3). Of course, I had to take each single one to verify that it in fact did lead to B3.

Leaving the area also resets the set encounters, so I had to do those several times. And there were a lot of set encounters.

Another thing that made things slower was that I couldn't use magic in a few squares. I mentioned above that I only had spells to attack the front or back row. That's no longer true; when Vryana leveled up, she learned SWARM, which seems to attack every enemy in the party. I forgot to mention it in the above post because you can't use it inside a dungeon, so it wasn't fresh in my mind.

On the other hand, I didn't have to destroy EVERY enemy one at a time in those battles, because more and more enemies are running from me. Even Wild Boars, which slaughtered me in Sorpigal at the beginning of the game, will now sometimes run from me.

For all the time I spent there, I didn't get much meaningful from it. I still, of course, am nowhere near leveling up (I wonder if this game has a low level cap? My cleric and wizard have been gaining a new spell level every two experience levels. And the spell levels only go to 9). Story/quest wise, the only thing I got was a clue that said one piece was QUEEN, whatever that means. (I've gotten a couple of other clues that seem related to this mystery).

Re: Game Progress Topic Negative TWO (Minus World Edition)

I've reached Caverns Area 1 Sublevel. Once I sense that I'm about to beat a game, as I do hear, I become obsessed with trying to finish it that day. This new area is 37 of 39.

There was this one tough part at the end of the last level where you have to fight three incredibly powerful enemies in the same room without any hiding spaces. I used the BFG to kill one in two hits. Luckily, this charged the Soul Cube, and I used that to kill the second one in one hit. The last one I used the plasma gun on. It's easy to dodge their attacks one on one.

Argh.

I've mapped the majority of C3, including all of the Wyvern Peaks. Last time, I discovered 5 Wyvern ambushes, as well as a Wyvern lair. This time, I verified that those are all of the Wyvern encounters.

And both times, despite not having too much trouble with those enemies, the last one killed me! I thought it was a fluke the first time, and now it's really inexplicable since I've leveled up. However, one weird thing (weird despite that I've seen it happen with some other enemies, too) happened this last time: When I was near death, the Wyverns starting getting two turns in a row, elevating them from sort of tough to completely impossible.

I think I'll call it quits for tonight and will have to try earning (and then saving) the Wyvern's eye again.

And I don't know how I would rate this game. Something that could make me play that long can't be that bad. Seriously, there's no clock, but it must've been at least 15 to 20 hours of shooting demons in dark rooms and hallways. Maybe more.

I definitely had more fun with Doom 3 than Halo, Halo 2, or pretty much any other FPS I've played lately. Not that those were the greatest games...I scored Halo 2 way too high for some reason.

Would I buy/rent the expansion if it came out? Sadly, yes, I would.

I got a chance to play Quake III for the first time in awhile. It's rather frustrating. The stats page for the server I play at is working again, and I don't seem to be improving much. Among other statistics listed, the main one to watch is skill. Skill is calculated by Kills/(total deaths + 1).

For the last couple months, my skill has hovered around the .40 range. My advisor's (Chris) skill is around .75. He usually beats me, but I'm a match for him now, at least. Another faculty member, Neal, has a skill around 1.0. Playing against him is usually a wipeout. Neal usually beats Chris like Chris beats me.

Usually, a skill improves quickest by attempting something just beyond your ability. So playing Chris might be the best thing. But when I play online, there are many people with skill ratings of 1.30-1.40. I wonder if this prevents me from gaining any experience at all, just because these guys are not only hard to kill (not only do they have the moves, but they know where and when the health and aromor powerups appear), but they'll fucking waste you in 3 seconds.

Yes. Because that means I don't have to try buying it on ebay and end up paying 5 million dollars for shipping.

Also, it's got enhanced graphics. And we all know that graphics are the most important thing. 8)

Yeah, but the voice acting got shafted on it, especially the ninja's voice, he now sounds like he's got a bad case of asthma, and Liquid just doesn't sound as cool.

Oh good, someone else I know watches Paranoia Agent.

Viewtiful Joe: I beat episode 4 and am making my way through episode 5. I'm starting to hate those giant Hulk-esque robots. A lot.
