What game(s) are you playing right now?

The reason I haven't replied to nor started a topic like this in awhile is because I'm running a Pennant Race in Extra Innings, and every one of my replies would be something like,

"36 games into the Pennant Race"

"48 games into the Pennant Race"

"62 games into the Pennant Race"

etc., etc.

But I'm thinking of starting up another game while I'm at it. I like to play a few games of Extra Innings a day, and then work on something else. I was playing Zanac for awhile. It's a great game, but I don't want to play it any more right now.

I haven't played an RPG in so long, that I've been kind of having withdraw, so I'd like to play either an RPG or something close to it. However, until I have my site completely switched over to flyingomelette.com, I don't want to try anything that I haven't already played. I'll need undivided attention for that. I had one of two things in mind (Both games I've finished before):

Little Ninja Brothers

I've been really wanting to play this again. The problem is, it's a game that's only greatly appreciated by a few people around these forums. If I were to beat it and write a review, I'd want to do a review that would do it justice. And since RPGs are the hardest kinds of games for me to review, I'm not sure I'm up to the task.

Lagoon

This wasn't one of my favorite games, but I have been thinking about it a lot, lately. It would be much easier to review than LNB, and I figure I can play it, beat it, review it, then never have to play it again.

Right now, I'm leaning towards Lagoon...

Nothing all that significant. Struggling to finish much of anything, like always. Got really far into Suikoden III, an excellent game, but I really need to play again from the beginning to do things properly and make the rest of the game less difficult.

Played up to Chapter 2 of Icewind Dale... need to get back to playing that sometime soon. Also started FF6 briefly, but kind of lost interest. Had some fun playing with an editor that lets you change character/enemy stats, graphics, names, and just about everything else about that game.

Waiting for Skies of Arcadia Legends to arrive. It'll be my main game to focus on finishing (hence it being mentioned in my signature right now). After that (or perhaps at the same time) I'll work on Mario Sunshine some more.

Re: What game(s) are you playing right now?

Ikaruga and Mars Matrix, more of the latter.

I picked up Ikaruga again because of all the talk about the US release, but I simply don't have the time to put into that game that needs to be invested in order to get good. (And that's a LOT of time.)

Mars Matrix, on the other hand, is usually good for a quick play. I've beaten several more of my score attack scores, and even made a new webpage to document them (instead of using Liontamer's forum). Right now I'm working on 1A and 1B, because I cannot at all figure out how to get even CLOSE to the top spots on Capcom's (defunct) Japan score ranking page. I know the trick to getting huge score boosts on the stage 1 and 2 bosses, but I can't make it work to it's fullest extent consistently.

...Games recently played...1

While I've been playing a sampling of this and that, (especially since I've aquired -almost- all the travel components of the PS1...except for the car adapter and external A/V cord for plugging into stuff like cam-corders and DVD players.) NOTHING I've been playing for the last few months can even come close to the number of hours that I've spent on RPG Maker. Between all the memory cards, I suspect that my total number of hours played (or used up) must be close to 1,000, by now.

I haven't tried using RPG Maker with the battery powered PS1, yet, as that battery has a {sarcasm} REALLY NICE EARLY WARNING SYSTEM {/sarcasm} when it comes to the 'Battery low' warning...THERE IS NONE. Sure, the thing has this light spot that glows in three different colors when the battery is being charged. But, where are those lights upon dis-charge? Instead, I get 100% operation for about 2 hours (really nice running time, by the way) and then the screen starts to shake and waver like 15-30 seconds before the PS1 goes to BSOD...and that's all the warning there is. And, there is hardly any PS1 games that allow you to save at the drop of a dime. I have to run a stop watch to know when to call it quits.

Oh, but what fun it was to drive down to the local McyD's for breakfast, park up on the hill and watch the sun come up as I played PlayStation games atop my dashboard. GameBoy's just not quite the same.

I just got Mega Man 8 today and I started playing it. It's not bad. The stages are a bit harder than typical Mega Man fare. I also like the rides like the snowboard in Frost Man's stage and the Rush Jet in Tengu Man's stage.
The bosses seem a bit easier. I beat Frost Man and Grenade Man on my first try using the Mega Buster. I tried Clown Man next and he kicked my blue butt.
The idea of getting upgrades in Light's Lab is a cool concept.
Every review I read said this was typical Mega Man. It is in some ways, but it's also different enough to be enjoyable.

I'm now up to the boss of the Ice Cave in Lagoon. It's a huge ball that rolls back and forth, and you have to kill six octopi-like things on both sides of the room before you can damage it. It's one of the toughest bosses in the game. I'll need to level up a bit...

I LOVE FO!

I got Xexyz as a gift (it must have been on sale) over 10 years ago. I haven't played it in a very long time, but my memory of it is that it was mediocre (2 stars).

First, I didn't find the game much fun because I didn't like the play control. Controlling Apollo wasn't as smooth or inherently fun as controlling Samus in Metroid, or the characters in Contra. The super jump (which is performed by holding up and pressing jump) is especially awkward.

Then there's the control for the shooter stages. My belief is that you shouldn't need powerups to have good play control in a shooter. But your ship is too slow in Xexyz without speed ups, so it's not fun to control (I was never bothered by R-Type's speed up system for various reasons, one probably being that you were never long without a speed up, and never were without one if you needed it)

I don't think the game's level design was very good, either.

The first section of the planet stages were the only parts of those stages that had a unique look. Once you entered the "mechanic castles" [I guess your enemies have a penchant for fixing motors], they all looked the same. FO, while playing through the game tonight, pointed out to me a dragon in the background of one of the fortresses. It was pretty subtle (it was green, and blended in inconspicuously with the mechanical backgrounds) and represents the extent of variety you can see in those stages.

The ending to Xexyz sucks. I know that may seem to be a small thing, but problems like that seem magnified in a game I wasn't enjoying to begin with.

Since almost everything I've said about this game so far is bad, you might wonder why I consider it mediocre instead of bad. Well, off the cuff message board posts aren't carefully modulated reviews! So there!

Yeah, she's the new boss. Piastol is her name. A pretty cool addition, IMO. She destroyed me when I fought her at level 12. At level 16, I beat the Death Hound and did some damage to her, but she got me with those instant death spells. Tried to bring the dead party members back, but the revive spell failed a couple times, and she destroyed me with her strong attacks.

Re: I LOVE FO!

I beat the all-bosses mode of Xexyz. Pretty easy. I tried beating the all-shooter stages mode, but they actually make you do the entire (obnoxious) final level, on-foot stages and all, before moving onto the final boss. I would beat all three robots, and then thanks to the faulty play control, fall in a pit and have to do it all over again. I think Xexyz is much worse about falling into pits than Heroes of the Lance.

I really don't like this game too much...

Game progress

Haven't played Mars Matrix lately; mostly Ikaruga. My high for stage 1 is 93 chains (S Rank). I should probably start playing for survival instead of going for chains, because the game gets hard enough on stage 3 that it's a challenge simply staying alive.

Stage 1 is no problem for survival; I usually die because I'm trying for a chain. If I mess up a chain, I'll usually start over.

Stage 2, again, isn't that hard to survive on, so I go for chains. I haven't figured out to chain through the part at the beginning with the swarm of small jets. The middle part is easier to chain, but gets hard again toward the end. My max chains are 43.

Stage 3 is where it gets tough. The miniboss is where I usually lose at least 2 lives. The boss? Forget about it. Although I have a strategy that WOULD work well if I could dodge, I forget to keep track of either the very small bullets or the gates that rotate.

Stage 4 is insane to look at, much less play.

Stage 5 seems easier than 4, but I haven't thought too much about it.

Overall, my high score is something like 4.4 million.

Re: Game progress

I beat Ninja Gaiden 2 twice today. It's not quite as good as Ninja Gaiden 1, but it's a fair sight better than Xexyz.

The final level of Ninja Gaiden 2 is difficult, but it's not as difficult, nor as brilliantly designed, as Ninja Gaiden 1's final level. For one thing, if you have a lot of weapon power and use your special arts wisely, NG2's final stage is considerably easier. But NG1's final stage is hard no matter what. Also, the very final stretch of NG2's last stage is very easy, whereas NG1's final stretch was one of the most difficult areas of the game.

Well, over the last week or two it's been Mega Man 6 (can't remember how far I got, but I beat like five or six of the first eight robots, had a power outage and never really played it since), Mega Man 7 (I finished those first three basic stages and one or two of the seconday ones, then lost interest), 1943 (I'll pass level 3 tomorrow, probably), Panzer Dragoon (I hate power outages), Castlevania (I don't remember exactly how far I got, I think Level 12), and Castlevania Bloodlines (I have no comment).

Started a musou mode with Zhang He, the BLATENT Vega (the claw guy from SF) ripoff. He looks like him, acts like him, and fights like him. Just without the mask. He looks different in the upcoming game though. Still has the claws though. Yay. I just hope he keeps the laugh that he bellows out during his true musou attack..

Strange glitch with Dian Wei happened in Chang Ban.
He said something, and it was Xu Huang's voice.
I think it was because he seems to have replaced him in the level by completing his mode beforehand...
I onder what'll happen hwen I complete Xu Huang's mode....will he retake his place? I doubt it, since Sun Quan has not retaken his place from Sun Ce in all of the levels.

Re: I LOVE FO!

I tried playing Star Ocean: The Second Story for Playstation. Bad Translation Connoisseurs, take note: How games like Final Fantasy 4 and Tactics get such reputations for having terrible translations and how there is practically no mention of it for this game is beyond me. I have seen more words used incorrectly in the course of playing this game than in the average GameFAQs review. Really. The dialogue is so bad it has to be seen to be believed.

Re: sdrftgyhj

I played some Vectorman (Smash Pack) version tonight, because it's the only action game on that disc that I haven't tried. It seemed OK, but nothing too special. Like Skullmonkeys, it's more or less your straight platformer. (Excpet Skullmonkeys was better, because it was more challenging, and it had some really funny stuff in it.)

Then I played Ikaruga again. I made it to stage 3 on one life, then choked and didn't even make it to the boss. In the game before, I made it to the stage 3 boss on my last life.

I've been buying a lot of games lately. Some Master System games (Kenseiden, Shinobi, Power Strike, Enduro Racer...) I bought enduro Racer because my friend Brandon had it back in the day. It's a 3/4 view excitebike, basically. But there's a track with water, and if you sink, it makes the funniest sound ever. Sort of this goofy bubbling sound. It used to crack me up every time I heard it, and Brandon would get mad because I'd sink on purpose over and over to hear the noise. (And laugh at him when HE sank.)

That reminds me of this one time my sister and I were playing Super Ninja Boy together. When the characters fall in the water during battles, they get the goofiest expression on their face ever. I fell in the water and she started laughing her ass off at me and wouldn't stop.

I LOVE FO!

I played through Metroid again today. I think the best thing about the game is the screw attack. The game was slow at the beginning - after I used my first five missles to get the long beam, I went to the door with the bombs, and the enemies weren't giving me many missles, so it took a while to get just the 5 missles I needed to open that door.

After you get the screw attack, though, the game speeds way up. I think Metroid has some of the best, most intuitive play control I've experienced, and the screw attack (and the speed at which you can dispatch enemies) takes extra advantage of that.

But I recall liking Super Metroid more. I've been put into the mood to replay that game, so maybe I'll do that next.

Re: I LOVE FO!

I had a friend that I played Super Ninja Boy with once and I laughed when her character fell in the water, too. But I think part of the reason why is because I wasn't really paying attention to what she was doing, then I suddenly heard her whine, "Ohhhhhhh!!" And I looked over at her character, and there it was sticking halfway out of the water with that over-the-top expression on its face and I started laughing. I also remember one time Crawl and I were playing Extra Innings together and his team kept making "errors". In Extra Innings, when a character makes an error, he says either, "oops!" or "uh-oh!" and his eyes bug out. After about the third time one of Crawl's characters bugged out, I started cracking up and couldn't stop. He even took a picture of me laughing.

Speaking of Extra Innings, I finished the Pennant Race tonight and won. Now I'm gonna devote most of my time to writing a review of it, and working more on Lufia.

When I left off of Lufia, I was in the Gayas Cave searching for Alumina.

I LOVE FO!

I did start Super Metroid earlier today. I was surprised to discover that I remembered more about Metroid than Super Metroid (having not played both for a long time - well, I played Metroid during game-a-thon, but even then I remember almost everything about it, once I started playing).

Right now, the last item that let me explore more of the world was the [first] super bombs. Since then, I've found more super bombs, super missles, energy tanks, etc., but nothing unique. I think the next thing I have to find is the hook, but I can't recall where it is (though I doubt I'll too much trouble finding it - I do remember the things that kept me stumped the first time I played through the game).

I wish this game had more than 3 save slots. The first I had was for my first time through the game. The second was one for the best ending. The 3rd was, I think, my attempt at getting 100%. So, I had to choose which to delete. I choose the second file, because I figured it probably be easier to go through the game again quickly than to find everything again.

Re: I LOVE FO!

I've never really been able to get into any of the Metroid games, personally. Probably because I'm not big on treasure hunting games, or even RPGs that emphasize treasure hunting above plot-forwarding. Although for some reason I love to play the Ultima games to just walk around, fight stuff, and go to the towns. Maybe I could play Super Metroid like that--the original would be too much of a pain, as it doesn't have a save feature.

I've gotten through Chapter 2 of the Geddoe story in Suikoden III, and started on Chapter 1 of the Hugo story yesterday. It's taking me forever to get through this game--I've been playing it for about 3 weeks and I've still only logged like 7.5 hours. I also won another national championship in NCAA 2003; and this is what annoys me about that game's screwed up prestige rating: I won my first championship against Middle Tennessee State, and my second one against a team from my own conference that I'd already beaten once that year--I wanna do it the REAL way, dammit. Oh well, now I can back-burner everything else and focus on Suikoden III. I'll probably be able to make more headway on it soon, as spring break starts for me in 2 weeks.

Re: I LOVE FO!

I decided to skip around a bit in Lufia, and I went ahead to some towns I'm not supposed to go to yet and bought better armor and weapons. I've been clearing out some caves that I'm also not supposed to have gone to yet in order to get money to buy those items. It's a good thing I've beaten this game before, because you can sort of find "spoilers" here and there by skipping ahead.

I didn't play much tonight (we watched a movie, as well as did other stuff) but I did beat the boss of the Ghost Ship in Super Metroid.

I LOVE FO!

Obviously, I haven't been playing games much lately! I beat Super Metroid this morning. I had already beaten Ridley, so from my last save I only had to enter Tourian and beat the game. My time was 4:41, and I got 81%. That was with me taking my time and not bothering to try to get everything (I did get all the energy tanks and all the special weapons, and missed only two super missles and one super bomb, so I was mostly missing missles).

Observations: Yeah, Ridley was easy. Granted, by then I had all but two or three energy tanks, but I had many filled up in reserve by the time I beat Ridley. I think the best bosses in this game are the ones at the beginning - if any boss has a chance at all of killing me, it'd be the first Chozo statue. Kraid may have had the most common boss weak spot, but it was implemented well in this game. Once you figure out the trick for the Crocomire, it's not tough at all on subsequent plays, but I didn't figure out that trick instantly.

On the other hand, I've finished this game many times before, so it's no surprise I wouldn't have much trouble from the bosses. I did remember some being easy even my first time through the game, but most seemed even easier this time.

When I fought the second chozo statue, I used only my charge beam. I don't know if I ever did that before. But it's a lot easier than using missles, which the statue almost always dodges.

My memory seemed to be correct: I found myself enjoying Super Metroid this time more than Metroid. I'm not sure why. I was talking with FO about this, and she said that Super Metroid has more to it than Metroid (more bosses, more areas, more weapons, etc), and that's true. But I seem to enjoy even the moment-to-moment play of Super Metroid more for some reason. Usually, I'd attribute something like that to play control, but I'm not sure that applies here, since I like Metroid's play control a lot.

Re: I LOVE FO!

I'm through the second chapters of everybody's stories in Suikoden III, and have started on Chapter 3 of the Chris story. I also played the first chapter of the Thomas story (secondary character for those who don't know the game), but I don't think I'm gonna go further in that any time soon, since the first chapter was incredibly boring and I have a feeling I already know where the story is going.

I'm worried the story is going to fall apart soon, though--or at least stop being interesting. I was worried from the beginning that they'd end up using the three different points of view to advance some cheesy, touchy-feely, moralistic "we all see things differently and don't know everything about each other so let's give each other the benefit of the doubt" type of plot, without bothering to make the atmosphere or the characters interesting in their own right. So far it's managed to avoid that, and has actually used to technique pretty effectively to mess with my expectations, but I have a feeling it's starting to drift in the direction I was afraid it would drift in. Mostly because it's beginning to introduce way more secondary characters than I think it'll have time to develop interestingly. I still think it's a really great game, but I hope the later parts of the game are as interesting as the first parts were. Maybe I should just go back to the Geddoe story.

Also, this morning I lost the first game of NCAA 2003 that I've lost in something like six weeks. Doesn't disrupt my run at the Division I-A record since I wasn't in dynasty mode at the time, but it was still kind of a letdown. I've been trying to collect the rivalry trophies, and today I missed a last-second field goal to win the Cal-Stanford game. As for my run at the record, I've got 41 wins in a row at the moment, which I'm almost positive puts me two shy of Bud Wilkenson's record. And there's no way I'm gonna lose either of those games.
